June 6, 2019 Farming Experience

On May 26 (SUN), the Nature & Adventure club conducted a farming experience in collaboration with members of the local community. Early Sunday morning, students gathering to plant potatoes in the field right across from the Hakusanroku campus. This event was conducted in collaboration with local farmers who willingly agreed to demonstrate and for us to use a patch of their fields. Students first plowed the field by turning over, watering, and mixing fertilizer in the soil. Next the local farmers demonstrated planting the potatoes, which the students followed in suit. This year we planted regular potatoes and sweet potatoes, both which we plan to harvest later this year. Many students have never farmed before and seemed to enjoy the experience. After planting the potatoes, students volunteered to weed a neighboring field before finishing the experience and heading to the onsen to clean up and a long-awaited lunch.

I was impressed by the students enthusiasm and feel lucky that the Hakusanroku campus is surrounded by such rich nature. I mean the farm is right across from the school; literally a one minute walk away! Students take advantage of this short distance to find time and take turns watering the field. It was also interesting to observe the students' reaction to the local farmers explaining that monkeys sometimes dig up and eat the potatoes right before harvest. They threatened and cursed the monkeys saying "I will never surrender my precious potatoes to you!", in fear of the thought of them stealing the result of their hard work. The experience really gave them a firsthand perspective of being a farmer. I asked the local farmers about our students' farming, who simply answered "They're OK. Everyone's a beginner at some point" with a big laugh. I look forward to the future of this relationship with the local community and especially to harvest season.

June 5, 2019 Math and life: A promising cooperation

Hi everyone. This semester, Professor Steven Carrera and I teach Algebra and Geometry “A” course to the second grade students at ICT. We prepared the syllabus and decided the lesson plan, then started preparing the class materials late last year. As Mr. Carrera is a professional math teacher and I am an engineer, the classes have been organized in a way that uses the major experience of both teachers. Mr. Carrera teaches the theories, the definitions and the basic concepts of all topics accompanied by many solved examples in order to clarify the different ideas of each topic. This part of the curriculum is very important for the students to build-up and strengthen their math skills. Such skills are very essential for engineers during the designing, programming and operating processes.

I teach the real-life applications which relate math theories to the world around us. This part of the curriculum will answer the question which always arises inside the students’ mind: Why do we study all these math theories?!? I expect that the students will enjoy our class a lot more after they find out why the different theories they learned are useful for solving real life problems. In this case, our class could be a model of giving opportunity to students to build up a solid foundation of a certain topic as well as understanding the world around them. This goal can’t be achieved unless there is a promising cooperation between teachers.

May 31, 2019 Studying SDGs in Engineering Context

1) 2030 SDGs
https://imacocollabo.or.jp/games/2030sdgs/

https://sdgslocal.jp/cardgame/

3) THE SDGs Action cardgame X(クロス)
https://www.kanazawa-it.ac.jp/kitnews/2018/0920_sdgscard.html

In the Engineering Contect IIA class, the second-year students are taking a SDGs crash course titled "SDGs as Engineer Ethics." This is a class in which students learn the ethical values necessary to solve global problems such as poverty, inequality, and the environment, and local problems such as depopulation and the need for regional revitalization. We are studying the SDGs using card games and actually visiting sites of regional revitalization to develop our mind and learning how to take action to solve such complicated problems that have no easy answer.

The following are the three card games we used in class. Each have a history of being used in both Japan and overseas.

1) 2030 SDGs
https://imacocollabo.or.jp/games/2030sdgs/

2) SDGs de Regional Revitalization
https://sdgslocal.jp/cardgame/

3) THE SDGs Action cardgame X (Cross)
https://www.kanazawa-it.ac.jp/kitnews/2018/0920_sdgscard.html

For the first two card games, players try to fulfil the goals of the world indicated by variables such as environment, economy, welfare, and population while balancing their own goals at the same time. This game is designed to give the player the experience of trying to create a world "where no one is left behind (the philosophy of the SDGs)" in a simulated society. If players concentrate too much on fulfilling their personal goals, the condition of the world will deteriorate, so they have to learn to work together with other players who have different motivations. This is also an opportunity for students to practice their negotiation and communication skills.

The third card game was designed by Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT). In this game, the player faces tradeoffs each time a SDGs is put into effect and has to learn how to innovate and overcome these consequences. Hiramoto-sensei and the KIT students who designed the game visited us at Hakusanroku campus to conduct a special class. Students developed their innovative mind through coming up with ideas of how to utilize the resources they have to overcome the tradeoff effects. In the next class, we plan to tryout our own original card game with the facilitating KIT students.

To deepen our understanding of the SDGs that we learned from the card games, we decided to visit an actual site of regional revitalization. The "Strawberry Farm Hakusan" is a tourist farm in Kamino-machi about twenty minutes by car from the Hakusanroku campus. This farm was open last year with the cooperation of the Hokuryodenko Co. who have experience with strawberry farming and small-scale hydropower generation. The farm's popularity has grown in the past year to the point of fully booked reservations on the weekends. There are repeating visitors from in and out of Ishikawa prefecture which help draw people to the Kamino-machi area. The electricity of the greenhouse is generated from a waterway nearby and prevents the release of CO2. The greenhouses temperature can be remote-controlled from a tablet and is an example of IT farming of the future. We were able observed firsthand the collaboration between Kamino-machi and Kanazawa city and how it contributes to drawing people to rural areas. The fusion of regional capital is a practice conducted not only national but also as a form of collaboration between nations. This was an opportunity for students to glimpse this form of regional revitalization.

May 30, 2019 Student Interview

May 23, 2019

Hello. It's your Japanese teacher, KTB. This will be my third entry for the Hakusanroku journal. One of my joys to this day is buying analog records. I usually choose simple accompaniment music by acoustic guitar or electric guitar. One day a friend asked me "If you like guitar music so much, why don't you play it yourself?" so I decided to give it a try. It's been a slow progress since I started so late. My initial goal was to become like Joao Gilberto but I'm afraid he will always be in the far distance throughout my lifetime. I get anxious in front of an audience, so I mostly only play love songs for my lovely wife. (Alas, apparently they do not reach her ears)

It turns out that 1st-year S department student Shuntaro Sato is also interested in learning the guitar, so we decided to find time to practice together before dinner on days with no club activities. At first, even the simplest cords may seem difficult. However, I believe with patience, he can surpass my level in the two years here at Hakusanroku. Do not underestimate the speed of young learners.

There are two types of lifestyles. Those with a guitar and those without. (Oh wait, but in June there are the lifestyles of with or without roses in the garden, and when it snows there are with and without skiing, and Oden and Kurumabu, and… Apparently life is actually filled with a lot of important stuff.)

Back to the subject, I hope this single guitar can add entertainment to Sato-kun's everyday life. Take it easy and keep at it.
