 Hello everyone. I’m James Taylor from the English Department.
 We finally got our first snow at Hakusanroku Campus on the morning of 14^th December. Since then, it’s hardly stopped snowing. The scenery is beautiful, but sometimes it feels as if we’re living in a monochrome world.

　こんにちは。英語科のジェームス・テイラーです。
　12月14日、白山麓キャンパスにやっと初雪が降りました。それからずっと雪が降り続けています。確かに景色がきれいだけど、モノクロの世界に住んでいるような気がします。

 Another benefit of the snow is that it encourages the students to go outside. In the 10-minute breaks between morning classes and afternoon classes, students have been rushing out to jump around and pelt each other with snowballs. For many of them, this is their first experience with snow. It’s a great opportunity for them to get some fresh air and exercise between long periods of concentration.

　雪が降ってから学生たちは外に出る機会が増えてきました。1限目と2限目の間、そして3限目と4限目の間に10分間の休み時間があります。その休み時間に、学生たちは外に飛び出して、雪玉を友達に投げたりしています。多くの学生たちにとって、雪は初めての体験です。授業でたくさん勉強に集中をしている学生たちがフレッシュな空気を吸って、体を動かすのはいいチャンスだと思います。


 Also on 14th December, the Oguchi Social Welfare Council, which is based in Oguchi Community Centre, delivered Christmas cakes to households with children. My son and daughter were very pleased! My son ate the Father Christmas, my daughter had the reindeer, and I got the snowman.

　そして、12月14日には、尾口地区社会福祉協議会が子供のいる家庭にクリスマスケーキを届けてくれました。僕の息子と娘は二人とも喜びました。息子はサンタ、娘はトナカイ、そして僕は雪だるまを食べました。

 Then, on 20^th December I went to Oguchi Community Centre for my monthly English Café event. This month’s event was a Christmas party. We started by decorating the tree, then learnt some words related to Christmas before playing a Christmas-themed game of bingo. 18 people, including 9 children, from the local area attended and had a lot of fun. As ever, the Community Centre staff put a lot of time and effort into preparing for the event; I’m very grateful for that.
　
　それから、僕は12月20日に尾口公民館で毎月行う「イングリッシュ・カフェ」というイベントを開催しに行きました。今月のテーマは、もちろんクリスマスでした。最初はみんなでクリスマスツリーの飾り付けをしました。そのあと、クリスマスにまつわる言葉を学び、クリスマスにちなんだビンゴゲームをしました。18人（そのうち9人の子供たち）は尾口地区から集まり、楽しくクリスマスパーティーをしました。公民館のスタッフは毎回色々な準備を頑張ってくれて、僕は感謝しかありません。

 I always look forward to the opportunity to interact with people from the neighborhood.
　
　僕はこの地域の方々との交流が出来る機会をいつも楽しみにしています。

December 22, 2022 2年生エンジニアリングデザイン「紅はるか事業」

耕作放棄地から付加価値商品
国際高専2年生が自ら栽培した「高専紅はるか」を使いコラボ商品

　こんにちは！国際高専の広報を担当している志鷹 英男です。
　開始早々余談になりますが、私の出身地は富山県立山町。父親の実家は立山山麓に位置する芦峅寺（あしくらじ）というところです。石川県でいうならちょうど国際高専白山麓キャンパスがある白山麓に相当する場所になります。それでも自分の記憶の中で野生の猿を間近に見たという記憶はありません。
　それが今年10月でしょうか、白山麓キャンパスの校舎手前の道路で、私の車の前を白昼堂々、猿の軍団がゆっくりと、しかも恐れも知らず横切っていったのには正直驚きました。聞きしに勝るとはこのことです。今や日本の中山間地域は、少子高齢化による農業人口の減少と、それに伴う耕作放棄地の増加と獣害被害の増大という負のスパイラルに陥っていることをあらためて実感した瞬間でした。

　国際高専ではエンジニアリングデザインという授業の一環で、2年生が校舎前の耕作放棄地を活用した「Agriculture Innovation Project」に取り組んでいます。今年も2年生9名で、「紅はるか」を学生自らが栽培し、広告宣伝から販売、決算まで、さながら農業法人の経営ビジネスを実践していく「アグリビジネス班」と、AIを活用した獣害対策システムの開発に取り組む「獣害対策班」に分かれ、通年で活動しています。

その中でこの10月、11月に行われた「アグリビジネス班」の活動の一端を紹介することにしましょう。

■「高専紅はるか」としてのブランド展開

2年生が「高専紅はるか」の焼き芋販売を10月30日（日）と11月3日（木・祝）に、白山麓キャンパス前の「道の駅瀬女」の店頭で行いました。
自ら栽培した紅はるかを「高専紅はるか」というブランド名で焼き芋にして販売したのですが、POPやポスター等の制作も学生自身で行っています。
私は両日とも様子を見に行きましたが、中には「美味しかったからまた買いに来た」とおっしゃった方もいるほど美味しかったようで、両日とも完売したそうです。
なお、金沢キャンパスのレストランLA TERRA（ラテラ）でも11月14日（月）より、「紅はるかの焼き芋」というメニュー名で、小鉢（70円）が期間限定で販売されています。こちらはSNSでも「甘くて美味しかった。単品で買ってもいいくらい美味しい」というツイートが観られ、評判も上々です。
指導教員の山崎 俊太郎教授によると「芋の熟成が進んで糖度が上がってきている」とのことです。
また、生芋も道の駅瀬女の店舗内や金沢キャンパスのコンビニ「Y　ショップアクア店」で販売され、アクア店では「店頭に出してもすぐに無くなる」人気ぶりだといいます。

■　コラボ商品第一弾「高専べにゃソフト」

この「高専紅はるか事業」の新規の取り組みとして今年は2件のコラボ商品が矢継ぎ早に開発、販売されました。第一弾は、白山麓キャンパス前にある「蕎麦山猫とキジトラコーヒー研究所」とのコラボ商品として「高専紅はるか」の焼き芋を使ったソフトクリームを共同開発。蕎麦山猫とキジトラコーヒー研究所にて10月30日（日）より期間限定での店頭販売が始まりました。
「高専紅はるか」のチップス付き「チップスべにゃソフト」が580円で、トッピングなしの「高専べにゃソフト」が500円。焼き芋の粒が練り込まれた、ねっとり、まろやか、甘さ控えめのおいしいソフトクリームに仕上がっています。
また手間がかかるということでお客さんが少ない時間帯に限定された「モンブランべにゃソフト」も850円で限定発売されています。こちらはキャッチフレーズどおり「ねっとりあま～い」食感が楽しめるソフトクリームです。

個人的な話になり恐縮ですが、販売初日、晴れていたので、かみさんも誘って、「チップスべにゃソフト」を食べに行ったのですが、「あれ、もう一度食べたいけど、まだあるかな？」と今朝（2022年11月30日）も言っていました。撮影したあと、持ち帰った焼き芋も、焼き芋ってこんなに甘かったかな？と思うほどの甘さ。さすがにスイーツ芋の王様と言われるだけあり、「高専紅はるか」の美味しさは食べた人の記憶に確実に刻まれるようです。

■コラボ商品第二弾「高専紅はるかサンデー」

高専紅はるか事業コラボ商品の第二弾は、道の駅瀬女とのコラボ商品として「高専紅はるかサンデー」が11月12日（土）より、道の駅瀬女にて期間限定で販売されました。価格は400円。紅はるかの冷凍焼芋をダイス状にし、バニラソフトクリームと黒ゴマをトッピングしたもので、紅はるかの甘みと玄米フレークのサクサクとした食感が楽しめる一品に仕上がっています。
こちらの第一弾、第二弾とも店頭に掲示されたPOPを学生自身が制作しています。

耕作放棄地はそのままにしておくと何も生まれません。でも耕作放棄地で学生により栽培された紅はるかは、焼き芋にしても、スイーツにしても、食べた人にもう一度食べたいと思わせる高付加価値商品になりました。そして協力していただいたステークホルダーにとっても新たなビジネス機会をもたらしました。そういう大人でもなかなかできないことを学生たちは実証してみせたのです。立派なことだと思います。

Value-Added Products from Abandoned Land
Collaboration products using Kosen Beniharuka cultivated by 2nd year ICT students

 Hello! My name is Hideo Shitaka, and I am in charge of the Public Relations for ICT.
 Beginning on a personal note, I was born in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. My father's family home is in Ashikuraji, which is located in Tateyama Sanroku (Foothills of Mt. Tateyama). If it were in Ishikawa Prefecture, it would be the HAKUSANROKU (Foothills of Mt. Hakusan) area where the Hakusanroku campus of ICT is located. Even so, I have no memory of seeing wild monkeys before.

 I was surprised to see a troop of monkeys slowly and fearlessly crossing in front of my car in broad daylight on the road in front of the Hakusanroku Campus in October of this year. There were more than I expected. It was the moment that I realized that Japan’s mountainous regions are now in a negative downward spiral. Due to the aging of the population, there is a decrease in agricultural workers accompanied by an increase in abandoned farmland and crop damage from animals.

  As part of the Engineering Design class at ICT, 2nd year students are engaged in what is called the Agriculture Innovation Project, utilizing the abandoned farmland in front of the school building. This year, the nine 2nd year students are divided into two groups. The Agribusiness Group cultivates sweet potatoes called Beniharuka and learns business management practices while running an agribusiness corporation, including advertising, sales, and accounting. The Animal Damage Prevention Team works on developing an AI-based system to prevent crop damage. 

 Here, I will introduce some of the Agribusiness Group activities from October and November.

 

■Kosen Beniharuka Branding 

On Sunday, October 30th and Thursday, November 3rd, 2nd year students sold Kosen Beniharuka branded baked sweet potatoes at Sena Roadside Station in front of the Hakusanroku Campus.
The students produced and sold baked sweet potatoes under the brand name of Kosen Beniharuka. They also created signs and posters.
I went to see the event on both days and heard that the baked sweet potatoes were so delicious that some people said they came back to buy more, so they sold out on both days.
Since Monday, November 14^th, small bowls of sweet potato have been available at the restaurant La TERRA on the Kanazawa Campus. They are on the menu for a limited time as “Beniharuka no Yakiimo” and cost 70 yen. They have received comments on SNS, such as "It was sweet and tasty. I wish I could buy more”.
The supervisor of the project, professor Shuntaro Yamazaki, said that the sweet potatoes are maturing and the sugar content is increasing.
Raw sweet potatoes are also sold at Sena Roadside Station and at Y Shop Acqua convenience store on the Kanazawa campus. At Acqua, they are so popular that they are gone as soon as they are put on the shelves.

 

■Kosen Beniya Soft - The First Collaboration Product

As a new initiative of the Kosen Beniharuka Project, two products were developed and sold in rapid succession this year. The first product was a collaboration with Soba Yamaneko and Kijitora Coffee Laboratory located in front of the Hakusanroku Campus. This was a jointly developed soft serve ice cream using baked Kosen Beneharuka sweet potatoes. The product is now available at Soba Yamaneko and Kijitora Coffee Laboratory for a limited time, which started on Sunday, October 30^th.
The “Chips Benya Soft” with Kosen Beniharuka chips costs 580 yen, and the “Kosen Benya Soft” without toppings is 500 yen. Small chunks of baked sweet potato are mixed into the soft serve ice cream, making it sticky, with a smooth, gentle sweetness.
The "Mont Blanc Benya Soft" is also on sale for 850 yen, but only during the hours when there are few customers because it requires a lot of time and effort to make. As the catchphrase “sticky-sweet” suggests, this soft serve ice cream has a delightful taste and texture.

 

I am afraid this is a personal story, but on the first day that Chips Benya Soft was sold, it was sunny, and I invited my wife to try it. She really enjoyed it. In fact, a month later (November 30th, 2022) she asked for more, saying "Oh, I want to try it again, but is it still available?"
The baked sweet potato I brought home after the photo shoot was so sweet that I wondered how they could be so sweet. The sweetness really surprised me. Beniharuka is the king of sweet potatoes, and as expected, their delicious taste certainly seems to be etched in the memories of those who have eaten them.

 

■Kosen Beniharu Sundae - The Second Collaboration Product

The second product of the Kosen Beniharuka business is the “Kosen Beniharuka Sundae,” a collaboration product with Sena Roadside Station, which was sold there for a limited time from Saturday, November 12^th. The price was 400 yen. For this sundae, diced and frozen baked Beniharuka sweet potatoes are put on top of brown rice flakes and topped with vanilla soft serve ice cream and black sesame seeds. This created a dish that offers the sweetness of Beniharuka and the crunchy texture of brown rice flakes.
The students also created the signs displayed in the storefront for both the first and second versions of this product.

If abandoned land is left as it is, nothing will come of it. The Beniharuka grown by the students on this land became a high value-added product that people want to try again, whether as a baked potato or in sweets. It also brought new business opportunities for the stakeholders who we collaborated with. The students were able to show that they could do something that even adults have difficulty doing. I think this is a great accomplishment.

December 21, 2022 2年生エンジニアリングデザイン「アサギマダラ事業」

アサギマダラをモチーフに美しいオリジナル商品を開発　
2年生アグリビジネス班による「アサギマダラ事業」

　こんにちは！国際高専の広報を担当している志鷹 英男です。
　20年近く金沢工業大学の広報を担当した後、3年前から国際高専の広報活動に取り組んでいます。これが仕事として、なかなか面白い。趣味と実益を兼ねて、よく写真も撮っているのですが、昨年の9月、2年生がエンジニアリングデザインの一環で取り組んでいる白山麓キャンパス前の紅はるか畑の様子を撮影しにいった際、畑近くの植物にきれいな蝶がたくさん飛んでいることに気がつきました。それがアサギマダラとの出会いです。

　今年7月に、山崎 俊太郎教授から電話があり、2年生のアグリビジネス班が「高専紅はるか事業」に加えて、新規に「アサギマダラ事業」に着手したことを教えていただきました。地元住民による白山ろく里山活性化協議会が昨年から、道の駅瀬女に隣接する耕作放棄地にフジバカマを植え、初夏から秋にかけて飛来するアサギマダラの休憩地として道の駅ならぬ"空の駅"として「アサギマダラ空の駅・白山」を整備し、子どもたちを対象とした「アサギマダラ・マーキング調査体験」を始めたこと、国際高専でも2年生のアグリビジネス班がアサギマダラの集客力に着目した新規ビジネスの開拓に挑戦している、という内容でした。

　国際高専の特色として、解決策はアイデアで終わらせず、具体化して検証していくプロセスを重視しています。アサギマダラ事業では白山ろく里山活性化協議会の方々に事業内容に関するプレゼンを行い、9月23日（金・祝）に行われる「マーキング調査イベント」の際に、オリジナル商品の露店を出店することになりました。昨年はたった1日のマーキングイベントだけで終わった体験も、オリジナル商品を通じて、白山麓＝アサギマダラの聖地としてブランド化させていくことができます。

　アサギマダラをモチーフにした箸置きやキーホルダー、コースターを学生自身が、コンピュータスキルズ等で身につけたパソコンスキルでデザインし、校舎内のMaker Studioにあるレーザーカッターを使い、商品化しました。パッケージのデザインも学生が行いました。学生が作ったものだからと侮るなかれ、とても美しく繊細な商品に仕上がっています。

　9月23日（金・祝）は朝からあいにくの雨模様でしたが、それでも多くの親子連れが参加しました。国際高専の露店も家族連れで賑わっていました。当商品は道の駅瀬女で10月1日（土）まで販売されました。
　また、国際高専の金沢キャンパス21号館2階のブックセンター入口のキャンパスグッズコーナーでも販売されているほか、11月6日（日）に行われた国際高専学校見学会でも展示され、参加者の注目を集めました。

　白山麓キャンパス前に広がる耕作放棄地。しかしながら、地元住民のご協力を得ながら、今までにないブランド価値を生み出せることを学生たちは「アサギマダラ事業」でも実践しました。

Developing Beautiful Original Products Using the Asagimadara (Chestnut Tiger Butterfly) as a Motif
2nd Year Agribusiness Group's Butterfly Business

 Hello! My name is Hideo Shitaka, and I am in charge of Public Relations for ICT.
 After nearly 20 years being in charge of public relations at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, I have been working on public relations activities for ICT for the past three years. As a job, this is quite interesting. I often take photos as a hobby and for practical use. Last September, I went to take photos of the Beniharuka sweet potato field in front of the Hakusanroku campus. This is where 2^nd year students were working as part of their Engineering Design class. While taking photos, I noticed many beautiful butterflies flying among the plants near the field. That was my first encounter with an Asagimadara (chestnut tiger butterfly).

 In July of this year, professor Shuntaro Yamazaki called me to say that the 2^nd year Agribusiness Group had launched a new Asagimadara Project in addition to the Kosen Beniharuka project. Last year, the Hakusanroku Mountain Village Revitalization Council, a group of local residents, planted Fujibakama (Fragrant Eupatorium) on abandoned farmland adjacent to the Sena Roadside Station to create the "Asagimadara Sky Station Hakusan". While Sena is a place for people to rest from early summer to fall, this sky station will become a place for Asagimadara to rest as well. The 2^nd year Agribusiness Group from ICT was also taking on the challenge of developing a new business that focuses on the ability of the Asagimadara to attract visitors.

 One of ICT's characteristics is that we believe that solutions do not end with ideas. Students also need to focus on the process of materializing and testing ideas. For the Asagimadara project, students made a presentation on their project to the Hakusanroku Mountain Village Revitalization Council about opening a stall of original products, which they were able to do during the Asagimadara Marking Event on Friday, September 23^rd, which is a national holiday. Last year, this experience was only a one-day Asagimadara Marking Event. This year it was expanded to include the sale of original Asagimadara products and efforts to identify HAKUSANROKU (Foothills of Mt. Hakusan) as a sanctuary for Asagimadara.

 Agribusiness group members designed and built chopstick rests, key chains, and coasters using the skills acquired in Computer Skills lessons and the school laser cutter in the Maker Studio. Students also created the packaging for these products. The products were beautiful and delicate. They did a really good job.

 Unfortunately, the weather on Friday, September 23^rd, a national holiday was rainy from the morning, but many families took part. ICT's stall was crowded with visitors. After the festival, the products were sold at Sena Roadside Station until Saturday, October 1^st.
 They were also sold in the Campus Goods Corner at the entrance of the Book Center on the second floor of Building 21 on the Kanazawa Campus of ICT. They were on display at the ICT School Tour held on Sunday, November 6^th, attracting much attention from the participants.

  There are many stretches of abandoned farmlands in front of the Hakusanroku Campus. However, with the cooperation of local residents, the students were able to create awareness of the Asagimadara Project.

December 2, 2022　金沢キャンパスでスポーツフェスティバルを開催

　こんにちは、白山麓高専事務室の間加田 侑里です。
　11月12日（土）、金沢キャンパスの体育館で、1、2年生（白山麓キャンパス）と4、5年生（金沢キャンパス）の合同スポーツフェスティバルが開催されました。

　両キャンパスの学生が一同に会する機会であったことから、11月27日（日）に開催される高専ロボコンの全国大会に出場する国際高専Aチームの壮行会が行われた後、バスケットボール、バドミントン、バレーボールの３競技の順で実施されました。学生たちは4学年混合の4チームに分かれ、ローテーションで３競技全てに出場する形式をとり、学生同士が競い合い、その中で優勝したチームが教員チームと対戦しました。どの競技も見応えのある試合と大きな歓声に包まれ、会場は大変盛り上がりました！競技終了後、各4チームに参加賞としてお菓子の詰め合わせが贈られました。

 　学生たちは日頃の学業から一旦離れ、仲間と力を合わせる機会となったと同時に、学年混合のチーム活動を通し両キャンパスの学生たちの親睦が深まる機会となりました。

 Hello, this is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office.
 On Saturday, November 12th, a sports festival was held at the Kanazawa Campus gymnasium. 1<sup>st and 2nd students from Hakusanroku campus and 4th and 5th students from Kanazawa campus joined together to take part in the event.

 Since it was an opportunity for students from both campuses to get together, a send-off ceremony was held for the ICT A team which participated in the national ROBOCON competition held on Sunday, November 27th. This ceremony was followed by three sports: basketball, badminton, and volleyball, in that order. The students were divided into 4 teams with team members drawn from all 4 grades. Then, the teams selected students to play each of the three sports to play against the other 3 teams.  The winning team for each sport then played against a team of faculty members. All of the competitions were very exciting, with spectacular games and loud cheers from the audience! After the competition, each of the four teams received an assortment of sweets as a participation prize.</sup>

 The event provided an opportunity for students to take a break from their daily studies and join forces with their friends. At the same time, students had a chance to deepened friendships between the two campuses through mixed-grade team activities.

November 21, 2022 高専ロボコン東海北陸地区大会 応援について

　こんにちは！国際高専1年の矢追 拓穂です。さて、今回は10月23日（日）に三重県のAGF鈴鹿体育館で行われたアイデア対決･全国高等専門学校ロボットコンテスト 2022 東海北陸地区大会の紹介をしていきます。
　今年は全10高専が集まり、それぞれの学校でAチームとBチームの２チームが参加しました。国際高専からは4年生3名のAチームと２年生3名、1年生5名のBチームが出場しました。Bチームは特別賞（牧野フライス賞）を受賞し、Aチームは技術賞と全国大会への出場権を獲得する大変嬉しい結果となりました。そして我々ロボコンメンバー以外の1年生も応援団として現地で応援しました。今回のテーマは「ミラクル★フライ」～空へ舞い上がれ！～ということで、高さ・面積の異なるスポットや滑走路、筒にロボットが飛ばした紙飛行機を乗せて得点を競う対戦型競技ルールになっています。そのため観客席に紙飛行機が飛んでくるという一面もありました。僕は選手ではないので実際にロボットを操縦はしていませんが、どの学校のロボットもそれぞれ全く違う個性があり感動しました。11月27日（日）には、全国大会が国技館で開催されるのでＡチームの4年生にはぜひ頑張ってもらいたいです。

Hello! This is Takuho Yaoi, a 1st-year student at ICT. This time, I would like to introduce the Tokai-Hokuriku Regional ROBOCON 2022, which was held on October 23rd at the AGF Suzuka Gymnasium in Mie Prefecture.

 This year, 10 schools attended and were divided into A and B teams, and from ICT, Team A consisted of three 4th-year students and Team B consisted of three 2nd-year students and five 1st-year students. Team B won a special award, and Team A won a technical award and the right to participate in the national competition. This time, 1st-year students who are not members of our robotics team also participated in the competition as a cheering group. The theme of this year's competition was “Miracle★Fly,”  in which robots launched paper airplanes to spots, runways, and tubes of different heights and areas to score points. Because of this, there was even one time when paper airplanes flew into the spectators’ seats. I am not a Robot contest member, so I did not actually control a robot, but I was impressed by the individuality of the robots from each school.

November 19, 2022 Making Jack-o’-lantern

My name is Ian Stevenson.
 Usually for Halloween, ICT students carve pumpkins to make jack-o'-lantern. However, this year was not a good year for pumpkins. Maybe it was because of the unusually humid and wet August here at Hakusanroku campus. Whatever the reason, while my garden produced a lot of tomatoes, it did not produce any pumpkins. So, this year students made paper mache pumpkins to make into jack-o'-lantern.
 It is very easy to make a paper mache pumpkin. All you need is a balloon, strips of old newspaper, flour, water, string, orange paint and a place to let them dry.

1. Inflate the balloon and tie it off.
2. Tear the newspaper into strips.
3. Mix one cup of flour with two cups of water.
4. Dip the newspaper strips in the flour and water and wrap them around the balloon. They will harden into paper mache when they dry.
5. When you are finished wrapping the balloon, let it dry overnight.
6. The next day, paint the paper mache orange and let it dry overnight.

 You now have a paper mache pumpkin to decorate.

 On October 29^th, 8 first year students decorated their pumpkins. Some students cut a face into their pumpkin and some students painted a face on their pumpkin. Designs included a cat, a vampire, happy and sad faces. After they finished, the jack-o'-lanterns were hung in the school library. Students put small flashlights into the jack-o'-lanterns that had faces cut into them so that they would look spooky and mysterious in the dark.

 The jack-o'-lantern that had faces painted on them became piñatas on October 31^st. The jack-o'-lantern was filled with candy and hung in the air. One student was blindfolded, given a stick and tried to hit the piñata. Usually, they missed many times, but with encouragement and help from their classmates, the piñata was smashed open and all the candy fell out for the students to pick up.

 As you can see from the photos and movie the students had fun making the jack-o'-lanterns and even more fun smashing them open to get candy.

　例年、ハロウィンで、ICTの学生たちはかぼちゃを彫ってジャック・オー・ランタンを作ります。しかし、今年はかぼちゃにとって良い年ではありませんでした。おそらく、白山麓キャンパスの8月は例年になく湿度が高く、雨も多かったからかもしれません。どんな理由であれ、私の庭ではトマトはたくさんできたものの、かぼちゃは収穫できませんでした。そこで、今年は学生たちが紙粘土でかぼちゃを作り、それをジャック・オー・ランタンにしました。

　紙粘土のかぼちゃの作り方はとても簡単です。必要なものは、風船、古新聞の切れ端、小麦粉、水、紐、オレンジ色の絵の具、そして乾燥させる場所だけです。

1) 風船を膨らませ、結びます。
2) 新聞紙を短冊状にちぎります。
3) 小麦粉1カップと水2カップを混ぜます。
4) 小麦粉と水に新聞紙を浸し、風船に貼り付けます。乾くと固まり、紙粘土になります。
5) 風船を包み終えたら、一晩乾かします。
6) 翌日、紙粘土にオレンジ色のペンキを塗り、一晩乾燥させます。

　これで紙粘土のかぼちゃが完成です。

　10月29日、1年生8名がかぼちゃの飾りつけを行いました。かぼちゃに顔を切り抜く学生もいれば、顔を描く学生もいました。学生たちは、猫や吸血鬼、幸せそうな顔、悲しそうな顔など、様々なデザインに仕上げました。完成したジャック・オー・ランタンをライブラリーコモンズに飾り、顔を切り抜いたジャック・オー・ランタンの中には小さな懐中電灯を入れ、暗闇の中で不気味に神秘的に見えるように工夫しました。

　顔を描いたジャック・オー・ランタンは、10月31日にピニャータとなり、お菓子を詰めて宙に吊るしました。1名の学生に目隠しをして、棒を渡してピニャータを叩き割ります。普段は何度も的を外すのですが、クラスメイトの励ましと助けもあり、ピニャータを叩き割ることに成功し、学生たちは散らばったお菓子を拾い集めました。

　写真と動画をご覧いただくと分かると思いますが、学生たちはジャック・オー・ランタンを作ったり、さらにそれを叩き割ってお菓子を拾い集めたりして楽しんでいました。

November 19, 2022 Happy Halloween!

　こんにちは、白山麓高専事務室の間加田 侑里です。今回はハロウィンの時期に開催されたイベントについて紹介します。

　10月26日（水）、ラーニングセッション（夜の活動時間）では、ハロウィンに向けた飾り付けが行われました。1年生の夏木 亮凪さんが、床から吹き出ている空調機からの風を利用し、吹き出し口側にビニール袋を貼り付け、お化けが風に揺られているように見せるという演出を思いつきました。学生たちは、ビニール袋に様々な表情をした顔や猫、ピエロなどを描き、取り付けました。風でユラユラと揺れるお化けがとても可愛らしく、教職員からも大好評でした！

 Hello, this is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office. This time, I would like to write about Halloween at ICT.

 On Wednesday, October 26th, during the learning session (evening activity time), students put up Halloween decorations. 1st-year student Ryona Natsuki came up with the idea of attaching plastic bags to the air conditioner outlets and using the wind blowing through them to make it look as if ghosts were swaying in the wind. Students painted various faces, cats, clowns, etc. on the plastic bags and then attached them to the outlets. The ghosts, floating above the ground, were very cute and a big hit with the faculty and staff!

　10月31日（月）、白山麓キャンパスでは飾り付けだけではなく、学生たちは海賊、メイド服、ルイージや今流行りのアーニャなどの衣装を身にまとい、教員たちは食べ物に扮したコスチュームなど仮装をしながら、授業が行われ、真剣にノートを取る学生たちの姿はユニークな光景でした。

　授業終了後、ハロウィンコスチュームパレードが開催されました。学生たちと教員たちはステージを歩き、観客である参加者に向かって自己紹介やポージングを決め、アピールしました。中でも、ラーニングメンターのアピラク・サンゲンチャイ先生はハリーポッターに扮し、呪文を唱えると共にドローンを操り、モノを空中へ浮遊するというパフォーマンスを披露した場面では、観客側から「お～！！」「凄い！！！」など歓声が上がり、印象的でした！その後、「最も面白い」「最も怖い」「最も可愛い」コスチュームを決めるコンテストが行われ、それぞれの優勝者には景品としてお菓子が贈られました。

　普段の学校生活とは違った１日となりました。

 On Monday, October 31st, the Hakusanroku campus was not only decorated, but students also dressed up as pirates, maids, Luigi, and the recently popular Anya, while faculty members dressed up in food costumes and other fancy attire. The students earnestly taking notes in class was a unique sight.

 After classes, a Halloween costume parade was held. Students and faculty members walked on stage, introduced themselves and posed for the audience of other parade participants. Learning Mentor Apirak Sang-ngenchai sensei dressed up as Harry Potter and performed ICT magic by using spells and a wand to levitate a drone into the air. The audience was very impressed and shouted “Wow! and “Awesome!”.
 Afterwards, a contest was held to decide the funniest, scariest, and cutest costumes, and the winners of the contests were given sweets as prizes.

 It was a unique and memorable day that was different from everyday school life.

November 17, 2022 アイデア対決･全国高等専門学校ロボットコンテスト 2022 東海北陸地区大会を振り返って

　こんにちは、デザイン＆ファブリケーション(D&F)クラブ顧問兼、高専ロボコン白山麓チーム指導教員の久島です。10月23日（日）に行われたアイデア対決･全国高等専門学校ロボットコンテスト 2022 東海北陸地区大会について紹介します。

　高専ロボコンは今年で35年目を迎えましたが、毎年異なる競技課題に対してロボットを製作し、その成果を競い合うものです。地区大会はコロナ禍のため2年間オンライン開催でしたが、今年は久しぶりにオンサイト開催となりました。今年のテーマは、ロボットが飛ばした紙飛行機を様々なオブジェクトに乗せ、得点を競い合うというものです。人間が飛ばしてもなかなかうまく飛ばせない紙飛行機をどのように飛ばすか、いかに狙ったところに飛ばせるかがポイントとなってきます。
　国際高専では金沢キャンパスの4年生3人によるAチームと、白山麓キャンパスの1・2年生8人によるBチームの2チームが出場しました。ここではAチームの活動にも少し触れながら、主にBチームの活動について紹介していきたいと思います。
　
　白山麓キャンパスではD&Fクラブ内で出場希望者を募った結果、2年生3人と1年生5人が手を挙げてくれました。高専ロボコンに向けた活動はルールが発表された4月から始まり、どのようなロボットを作りたいかのアイデア出しや紙飛行機の設計などを行っていきました。しかし、ロボットを作ったことのない学生たちの集まりなので、どうしても自分たちが製作できる能力を超えたアイデアとなり、ロボットの設計がなかなか進みませんでした。そこで技師の若松さんとも相談しながら自分たちの能力で作れる範疇のロボットを設計、製作していくこととなりましたが、設計の遅れや夏休みの帰省の影響で活動時間が確保できず、後学期から本格的なロボット製作が始まりました。
　完成したロボットは、3輪のオムニホイールロボットの上に紙飛行機の発射機構を載せるだけのシンプルな設計とし、発射機構自体も定荷重ばねを使って発射し、装填は発射する度に自陣に戻って手作業で行うものになりました。紙飛行機は翼形状の影響かコルゲート翼のような凹凸の影響か分かりませんが、とてもよく飛ぶものが完成しました。大会が近づいてくると放課後だけではなく土日も使いながら、ロボット制作に没頭することになりました。ロボット搬出の前週には発射機構を延長したり、搬出前日に行った動作練習中にロボットが動かなくなったりするなどバタバタしたながらもトラブルを乗り越えて大会を迎えました。
　大会では、周りの雰囲気に影響されたのか、学生たちの間で、いつも以上に「ああしろ」「こうしろ」と指示が飛び交っていました。白山麓キャンパスで行った練習では、一番手前のオブジェクトに紙飛行機を乗せることができていましたが、試合本番では、残念ながら一機も乗せることが叶わず、惜しくも予選敗退。しかしながら、思うようにロボットを動かせることができなかったチームがいる中で、きちんとスタート地点から移動して紙飛行機を飛ばすことができたのは立派なことだと思います。その甲斐もあってか、Bチームは特別賞（牧野フライス賞）をいただくことができました。
　一方、Aチームは、完全な初心者もいる高専ロボコン初出場の3人だけのチームでありながらも善戦。残念ながら準決勝敗退となってしまいましたが、技術賞を受賞するとともに、見事全国大会出場を決めました。夏休みや金沢キャンパスで授業があるときに彼らが活動している様子を見ていたので、フィールド裏で見ているこちらもうれしくなりました。
　本大会において1・2年生は間近で他の高専のロボットや先輩の活躍を見ることができ、とてもいい刺激になったことでしょう。

　AB両チームが受賞、Aチームは全国大会出場と、しばらく高専ロボコンの活動がなかった国際高専にとっては、再スタートのいい滑り出しとなる大会になったのではないでしょうか。国際高専の今後の活躍に期待が持てます。特に1・2年生はラーニングセッション（夜の学習時間）のない日には、教職員指導の下、遅くまでMaker Studioを使うことができるので、これからどんどん腕を磨いていってほしいと思います。

 Hello, I’m Kushima, the advisor of Design & Fabrication (D & F) club and the advisor of Hakusanroku team in the ROBOCON College of Technology. Today, I would like to introduce the recent event we went to, the Tokai-Hokuriku Regional ROBOCON 2022.
 
 This year was the 35th year of the competition, and it was the first time in a long time that the regional competition was held onsite after two years of online competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme of this year's competition was to have robots fly paper airplanes and place them on various objects to compete for points. The key point of the competition was how to make the paper planes fly and how to make them fly to the target which were also not easy to target by humans.
 There were two teams of ICT participated in the competition: Team A consisted of three fourth-year students from the Kanazawa Campus, and Team B consisted of eight first- and second-year students from the Hakusanroku Campus.

 At Hakusanroku Campus, I recruited participate for the ROBOCON from a D & F Club meeting, and three second-year students and five first-year students joined the team. The activities for the ROBOCON started in April, when the rules were announced, and the team members worked on ideas for what kind of robot they would like to make and they also designed paper airplanes. However, since Team B students had never built a robot before, students’ ideas were impossible to build with their ability, and they could not make much progress in designing the robot. Therefore, in consultation with Wakamatsu-san, an engineer, students started to design and build a robot that was within their capabilities. However, due to the delay in designing and the fact that they could not have enough time for activities due to the summer vacation, the robot building began in the second semester.  
 The Team B’s robot is a simple design with a paper airplane launching mechanism on a three-wheeled omniwheel robot. The launching mechanism itself was designed to use a constant-load spring to launch the paper airplanes, and loading was done manually. The paper airplanes flew very well, probably due to the shape of the wings. As the competition got closer, students spent time not only after school but also Saturdays and Sundays working on their robot. We extended the launch mechanism the week before the robot was to be transported out, and the robot stopped working during the operation practice the day before the robot was to be transported out.
 At the ROBOCON, they were influenced by the atmosphere around them and they were working harder than usual. During the practice sessions at the Hakusanroku campus, they were able to put paper airplanes on the nearest object but unfortunately, they could not put any of the paper airplanes on the objects during the ROBOCON, and they regrettably lost the preliminary round. However, while some teams were not able to move their robots as they wished, it is amazing that our students were able to move from the starting point and fly their paper airplanes. Thanks to their efforts, Team B was awarded the Makino Milling Machine Prize.
 On the other hand, Team A fought well even though they were a team of only three members, some of whom were complete beginners, participating in the ROBOCON of technical colleges for the first time. Unfortunately, they were eliminated from the semifinals, but they awarded the Technical Award and qualified for the national competition! I was happy to see this result, as I had seen them working harder for the ROBOCON during the summer vacation and when I had a class at the Kanazawa campus.
 I am sure that the first- and second- year students must have felt challenged and accomplished from seeing the robots of other schools and the activities of their seniors up close at this ROBOCON.

  With both Team A and B winning prizes and Team A participating in the national competition, this ROBOCON was a good start for ICT, which has not been active for a while. I’m looking forward to seeing the future success of ICT at ROBOCON. In particular, the first- and second-year students can use the Maker Studio until late (under the guidance of faculty members) on days when there are no learning sessions, so I hope that they will continue to improve their skills.

October 19, 2022 後学期も新メンバーを加えてラジオ番組開始！

　こんにちは。ラジオ番組「白山麓ジャーナル on  Radio」のプロデューサー兼ディレクターの伊藤です。早いもので、昨年の9月から始まった、学生とつくるラジオ番組「白山麓ジャーナル on Radio」が放送開始から１年経ちました。最初はなかなか喋る内容や話を膨らませる方法がわからず、リテイクの嵐で、収録に２時間以上かかっていたにも関わらず、クオリティが全然ダメで全部再収録した、なんてこともありましたが、さすがに私も学生も慣れてきて、スムーズに収録ができるようになってきました。
　後学期からは新たに１年生２名、水澤 諒也さん、村上 一龍さんがラジオのプロジェクトに加わり、これまでのメンバー（2年生 泉屋 匠吾さん、柿田 紗蘭さん、三輪 恵万さん、1年生 白石 春翔さん、夏木 亮凪さん、山本 明葵さん）と共にもっとパワーアップした番組を放送していきたいと思います。
　8月30日に放送した番組では特別編として「Voice from New Zealand」と題して、ニュージーランドに出発する直前の３年生をゲストに、オンライン通話を繋いで、インタビューを行いました。聞いてくれた方には留学を控えた３年生のワクワクとドキドキが伝わったんじゃないかと思います。なかなか好評だったようで、2022年度内にもう数回放送する予定です。ニュージーランドの学校のこと、生活のこと、さまざまな活動について聞いてみたいですね。
　番組を作る上での最近の悩みは、私も学生も外面を良くしようという理性が邪魔をして、トークがやや表面的になっていないか、ということです。学生たちをもっと掘り下げられるディープなトークができたらいいなぁ、と思っています。また、4月から国際高専の公式Twitterで、ラジオの収録日になると、その放送日やインターネットで聴けるサイマル放送のリンクを上げてもらっているのですが、いまいちリスナーが増えた実感がないことも最近の悩みです。結構自由に学生たちが学校について語っているので、国際高専を考えている中学生の方にも聞いてもらえれば雰囲気がわかってもらえると思います。
　後学期も国際高専白山麓キャンパスの自由で楽しい雰囲気が伝えられるラジオ番組を学生と共に作っていきたいと思います。是非、学生たちの生の声をお聞きください。

 Hello. I am Ito, producer and director of the radio project “Hakusanroku Journal on Radio”. It has been a year since the start of “Hakusanroku Journal on Radio”, a radio program created with students that began last September. At first, it was difficult to understand what to say and how to expand on what we were saying, and even though it took over two hours to record, we had to rerecord everything from the beginning many times because of the poor quality of the recordings. However, as expected, the students and I became accustomed to the recording process and were able to record smoothly.
 In the second semester, two new 1st year students, Ryoya Mizusawa and Ichiryu Murakami, joined the radio project, and together with the existing members (2nd year students Shogo Izumiya, Saran Kakita, and Ema Miwa, and 1st year students Haruto Shiraishi, Ryona Natsuki and Aki Yamamoto). With the new and existing members, we are looking forward to taking our programming to the next level.
 The August 30th program was a special edition called Voice from New Zealand, in which we interviewed 3rd year students just before their departure for New Zealand via an online call. I think those who listened to the interview could feel the excitement and thrill of the 3rd year students as they prepared to study abroad. The interview was quite well received, and we plan to broadcast several more interviews during the 2022 school year. The students and I are looking forward to hearing about students’ lives in NZ, their school experiences and what they are doing.
 My concern is that because we tried to sound too professional and good, unconsciously the talks are becoming a bit superficial. I am hoping to dig a little deeper and have more meaningful conversations with the students. Also, since April, I have been using the official ICT Twitter account to post the recording dates of the radio broadcasts and a link to the simulcast that can be listened to on the Internet, but recently I am concerned that the number of listeners has not increased. The students talk about the school quite freely, so I think that junior high school students who listen to the broadcast and are considering applying to ICT could get a feel for the atmosphere of the school.
 In the second semester, we will continue to work with students to create a radio program that conveys the free and fun atmosphere of the ICT Hakusanroku Campus. Please listen to the real voices of our students.

　こんにちは。白山麓高専事務室の間加田 侑里です。夏が終わり秋の涼しさを感じる季節となりました。今回は9月に行われた様々な課外活動について紹介します。
 Hello, this is Yuri Makada from Hakusanroku office. Summer is over and it is now time to enjoy the coolness of autumn. At this time, I would like to write about various extracurricular activities held in September.

【水風船投げ】

　9月13日（火）の放課後、水風船投げが行われました。この日のために、ラーニングメンターのアン・イソベル・タン先生、アピラク・サンゲンチャイ先生、ジョムキット・ジュジャロエン先生は400個以上の水風船を用意しました。
　まずは水風船に慣れるため、２人ペアで水風船キャッチボールが行われました。水風船をキャッチしたら一歩ずつ後ろに下がります。普通のボールとは感触が違い、簡単に割れてしまうため、水風船を優しくキャッチしなければなりませんでした。距離が延びるごとにキャッチをすることが困難で、割れてしまい悲鳴が響きました。次に、西部劇の決闘ゲームという、３歩歩いて振り向きざまに相手に水風船を当てるゲームが行われました。そして最後に、中庭全体を使い水風船を当て合いました。学生たちは笑ったり、悲鳴を上げたりしながら、走り回って水風船を投げ合いました。暑い夏が続いていたので、思いっきり水風船で遊ぶことが出来、楽しい時間となったのではないでしょうか。

【Water Balloon Toss】

 A water balloon toss was held after school on Tuesday, September 13th. Learning Mentors, Anne Isobel Tan sensei, Apirak Sang-ngenchai sensei, and Jomkit Jujaroen sensei, prepared over 400 water balloons for the event.
 First, to familiarize themselves with the water balloons, the students played water balloon catch in pairs. After catching a water balloon, they stepped back. The water balloon feels different from a regular ball and breaks easily, so the students had to catch the water balloons carefully. As the distance increased, it became more difficult to catch the water balloon without breaking it - causing loud screams. Next, students dueled like cowboys with the students walking three steps, turning around, and trying to hit their opponent with a water balloon. Finally, the entire courtyard was used for a water balloon fight. Students laughed and screamed as they ran around throwing water balloons at each other. It had been a hot summer, so the students had a great time playing with water balloons.

 

【ブックレビュー発表会】

　9月14日（水）、1年生によるブックレビュー発表会が開催されました。学生たちは夏季休暇中に読んだ英語の本（本のジャンルは自由）、STEMやデザインに関する本、好きな本（本のジャンル、言語は自由）の中から１冊選び、英語と日本語を交えて３分間のプレゼンテーションを行いました。学生たちは、自分が好きな恋愛小説や強い影響を受けた啓発本など様々な分野の本を取り上げ、印象に残っているセリフや新しく学んだことを紹介しました。
　発表後、学生と教職員による投票が行われ、「ベストブックレビュー」が選ばれました。結果は以下の通りです。

【Book Review Presentation】

 On Wednesday, September 14th, a book review presentation by 1st-year students was held. Students chose one of the following books they had read during the summer break: an English book (any genre of book), a book on STEM or design, or their favorite book (any genre and language of book), and gave a 3-minute presentation in English and Japanese. The students chose books from a variety of fields, including their favorite romance novels and enlightening books that have strongly influenced them. They introduced memorable quotes and new things they learned from their books.
After the presentations, students and faculty voted for their top three Book Reviews. The results are as follows:

【バレーボール大会】

　9月20日（火）、バレーボール大会が開催されました。本来、天気が晴れていれば駅伝大会となる予定でしたが、この日は生憎の雨となりました
　まず、１・２年生混合チームで試合を開始し、その後、１年生対２年生の試合が始まりました。1年生は団結力を発揮し、先輩たちに挑戦しました。2年生は1年生よりも人数が少ないため交代がほとんどなかったのですが、全く疲れを見せずによく頑張っていました。その後、教職員対学年別対決が行われました。教職員の中でも、ブランドン先生は高身長でバレーボールの経験も豊富ですが、学生たちはブランドン先生が打つスパイクやサーブ、ブロックに挑んでいました。教職員との対戦後、学生たちはもっと試合をしたかったようで、1、2年生合同チーム対教職員チームで試合をしました。教職員たちは、若いパワーに勝つことが出来ませんでしたが、学生と教職員の距離を縮める良い時間となりました。

【Volleyball Tournament】

 A volleyball tournament was held on Tuesday, September 20th. Originally, if the weather had been fine, there was supposed to be a long-distance road relay, but unfortunately it rained that day.
 First, 1st and 2nd grade mixed teams played, and then the 1st grade vs. 2nd grade games started. The 1st year students showed solidarity and challenged the seniors. The 2nd year students, who were fewer in number than the 1st year students, had no chances to rest but still did a great job without showing any fatigue at all. This was followed by matches between faculty and staff and the 1^{st and 2nd grade teams. Among the faculty members,  Brandon Wohlfarth sensei (Prof.) is tall and experienced in volleyball, and the students were challenged by his spikes, serves, and blocks. After playing against the faculty and staff, the students wanted to play more matches, so they formed a joint team of 1st and 2nd year students to play against a team of faculty and staff, although the faculty and staff members could not match the energy of the combined 1st and 2nd graders. It was a good time to} bring the students, faculty and staff closer together.

【コーヒー豆の焙煎体験】

　9月21日（水）、希望する参加者を対象に白山麓キャンパス向いにある「蕎麦山猫とキジトラコーヒー研究所」にて、オーナーの田口さんの指導のもと、、2グループに分かれてコーヒー豆の焙煎体験が行われました。
　まず、コーヒーの起源であるエチオピアの「1杯のコーヒーができるまで」の動画を鑑賞しました。そこでは、どのようにコーヒーが栽培され、収穫～出荷されるか解説されました。その後、白く薄緑色したエチオピア豆とパプアニューギニアの2種類が用意され、手回し焙煎機か片手鍋焙煎機のどちらかを使って焙煎を行いました。焙煎時間は約20分、焙煎が進むにつれ豆が茶褐色から黒褐色へと変化し、ポップコーンが弾けるようなパチパチした音が鳴り始めました。焙煎後、外に出てうちわを使いながら乾燥冷却が行いました。その後、割れや変色がある質の悪い豆を取り除いてから電動ミルで挽き、時間を計りながらお湯を淹れました。
　出来上がったコーヒーを飲んだ学生たちは「焙煎によって香りや味が全然違った！」や「両親が微糖を好む理由が分かった！」、「めっちゃ苦い！！」といった様々な声が上がりました。
　学生たちは、普段目にするコーヒー豆がどのように栽培～出荷されているのか知る良い機会となりました。また、初めて焙煎したての豆で入れた珈琲の味わうことができ、とても良い経験となりました。

【Coffee Bean Roasting Experience】

 On Wednesday, September 21st, two groups of students participated in a coffee bean roasting experience. This was done under the guidance of Mr. Taguchi, owner of "Soba Yamaneko and Kijitora Coffee Laboratory" located across the road from the Hakusanroku Campus. 
 First, the students watched a video called "How a cup of coffee is made". This video was made in Ethiopia where coffee originally comes from. It explained how coffee is cultivated, harvested, and shipped. After that, two types of coffee beans, the first white and light green Ethiopian and the second Papua New Guinean, were prepared and roasted using either a hand roasting machine or a one-handed roasting pot. The roasting time was about 20 minutes. As the roasting progressed, the beans changed to brown to blackish brown and began to crackle like popping popcorn. After roasting, the beans were taken outside for drying and cooling using fans. Then, after removing poor quality beans with cracks or discoloration, the coffee was ground with an electric mill and brewed with boiling water over a measured period of time.
 Students who drank the finished coffee said, "The smell and taste were totally different depending on the roasting!", "Now I understand why my parents prefer less sugar in their coffee!" and "It's so bitter!".
 It was a good opportunity for the students to learn how coffee beans are grown and shipped. It was also a great experience for them to taste coffee made from freshly roasted beans for the first time.
