英語がわかる「スイッチ」入った

英語の発音の授業では、最初は口をうまく動かせず、苦労しました。1カ月ぐらいで日常会話に問題ないぐらいにはなったのですが、質問を想像してあらかじめ答えを用意しておいたり、リスニングも、英語で聞いた所を頭の中でいったん日本語に直して理解していました。ところが、留学して半年ほど過ぎたころから、急に英語を英語のまま、理解できるようになってきたんです。日本語と英語の切り替えスイッチが入ったのかと思うぐらい、どれだけでも聞けるし、どれだけでも話せる。そんな感じでした。それからは授業もよくわかり、発音もより自然に、なめらかになっていきました。

ニュージーランドで過ごしているだけでそうなれるわけではありません。幼いころから英語を習っていて、留学できるから入学を決めたぐらい、英語が好きです。それでも、英語での授業や会話に苦労しなくなるまでは、相当な努力が必要でした。とにかく会話をすることが不可欠。どんな話題でもいいので、ホストファミリーとよく話すことを心掛けました。ホストファミリーは小さな子供がいる家庭だったので、子供たちが練習相手になってくれました。

専門異なる学生と協働でドローン制作

授業は理数系科目も専門科目も、当然ながらすべて英語です。1、2年生の時も外国人の先生が英語で教える理数系科目やコンピュータの授業があったので、すんなり受け入れられました。学ぶ内容は日本と同じですが、表現や記号が違うことがあり、英語での表記に慣れてしまって帰国後は少し戸惑うほどでした。

グループワークでドローンの制作に取り組んだ時は、役割分担を決め、３DCADでのパーツのデザインやプレゼン資料の作成、レポート用の記録などを担当しました。同じグループだった電気、機械が専門の学生は、情報が専門の僕が不得手な構造上の問題やモノづくりの流れをよくわかっていたので、頼もしかったです。途中でパーツが足りなくなったり、３Dプリンターが故障したりして、予定通りに制作が進まず、夜まで学校に残ったこともありました。欲しいパーツが在庫切れだったり、注文してもすぐに届かなかったりすることがよくあるので、余裕を持ったスケジュール管理の大切さがよくわかりました。

レポートやプリント類ももちろん英語

帰国した今、英語がもっと好きになりました。将来の目標は、外国人と話すのがとても楽しいので、英語を活かして人とかかわる仕事をすること。まずは大学に進学してもっと勉強し、他の言語も身につけて、世界の人と協働できるようになりたいです。

My English switch turned on.

At first, I could not move my mouth the way I wanted and had a hard time in English class. After about a month, I could exchange everyday conversation without much trouble but was constantly preparing answers in advance to common questions. As for listening, I would convert the English I heard into Japanese to understand it. However, after about six months studying abroad, I suddenly could understand English as English. It was like a switch inside me change from Japanese to English. I could understand all the English I heard and could say anything that I wanted to say. Something like that. Classes became more enjoyable, and my pronunciation became smooth and natural.

It wasn't just living in New Zealand that improved my English. I have always loved English. I went to an English school when I was young and choose ICT because it has an exchange program. That is how much I like English. However, even I struggled in English class and conversation and required a lot of effort to overcome it. Practice makes perfect. I talked to my host family as much as possible. The topic did not matter. I wanted to practice speaking with them. My host family had two small children, who were great practice partners.

Making drones with students from different fields

As you would expect, all STEM classes and special class were taught in English. ICT's foreign teachers teach STEM and computer courses in English so I did not have much resistance in New Zealand. The contents was the same and I actually needed some adjusting after returning to Japan because a lot of the phrases and symbols were different.

During the group work making drones, my role was to design the parts with 3DCAD, make the presentation documents, and take records of the process to use in the report. The students in my group were from the electronic and mechanical engineering departments and were experienced at the creation process, which was very helpful because my main field is information engineering. There were many times when things did not run like scheduled because either we ran out of parts or the 3D printer malfunctioned and we had to stay at school late at night. I learned the importance of keeping a flexible schedule in case parts you want are out of stock and do not arrive quickly after ordering them.

Of course, all reports and handouts are also in English.

Now that I have returned to Japan, I like English even more; especially speaking with foreigners. My goal is to find a job using English. To do that, I will transfer to university and study harder, learn other languages, and collaborate with people from all over the world.
