Returning Home with Memories and Experiences from New Zealand

Returning Home with Memories and Experiences from New Zealand

On March 16, 2026, the 3rd year students safely arrived at Narita Airport on NZ099. After the long flight, the students appeared a little tired, yet their expressions were softened by the sense of relief that comes with returning to Japan. In the arrival lobby, the sound of joyful reunions echoed as families welcomed their children home for the first time in a year.  Through these warm exchanges, one could clearly feel the students’ sense of accomplishment after completing their year‑long study abroad experience.

The year in New Zealand was filled with many challenges and learning opportunities for the students. Some worked hard to improve their English skills, while others made use of the school’s sports facilities as they pursued their personal fitness goals. Some students also mentioned that they learned new dishes from their host families and enjoyed the challenge of trying out unfamiliar recipes.
At the same time, many initially felt confused by the differences in culture and climate. However, as the year went on, they gradually developed the ability to adapt to their new surroundings. Some shared that the rich natural environment allowed them to study in a calm and focused way, while others spoke about being deeply moved by the majestic scenery. Still others described moments of warmth when interacting with local people.
Taken together, these stories show that each student gained their own unique learning and personal growth throughout the year.

On February 27, shortly before returning to Japan, the students attended the ICT Farewell Party at Otago Polytechnic, where many host families also took part. During the event, the students delivered presentations in English, sharing what they had learned over the past year. Even in their nervousness, they spoke earnestly, expressing their thoughts in their own words. After the presentations, they spent time with their host families, exchanging words of gratitude and celebrating the bonds formed during their stay.

On March 13, the students also had the valuable opportunity to take part in a joint graduation ceremony, which included the University of Otago. Wearing academic gowns and caps, they participated in the ceremony with great pride. The event, filled with a bright and celebratory atmosphere, became a truly special moment for them. Many students shared that standing there in their academic dress made them feel that their year of dedicated effort had been formally recognized.

After completing their study abroad program in New Zealand and returning home safely, the students’ expressions reflected a newfound sense of confidence and composure. Their year abroad was not filled with enjoyable moments alone; many experienced confusions, uncertainty, and at times emotional hardship. Even so, by facing each challenge one by one and overcoming obstacles through their own efforts, they achieved growth that is clearly evident today.

Finally, we would like to share a message from one of the returning students to those who will be in Otago Polytechnic Program in the future:

“While studying abroad, you may at times feel discouraged because of the differences from Japan—your own mistakes, eating habits, or the different sense of time. But in such moments, I hope you will try to notice the good things within those differences.
You will likely come to appreciate the open and friendly atmosphere, as well as the slightly laid‑back nature of the environment, which are unique strengths compared to Japan. When you can recognize Japan’s good qualities while also discovering the charm of New Zealand, your study abroad experience will become even more enjoyable.

People there are very accustomed to international students and are incredibly friendly, so I encourage you to take that first step.”

These words carry the genuine weight of the student’s own challenges, discoveries, and moments of growth.

The experiences, learning, and personal connections gained through this study abroad program will undoubtedly become a powerful foundation for their future student life and the paths they choose to pursue ahead. We sincerely look forward to seeing how they will continue to grow as they take their next steps forward.
