July 15, 2020 文弥人形浄瑠璃 見学

Hello, it's Jonathan, the camera man. Today I would like to reflect on the second-year students' visit to see Bunya Ningyo-Joruri in Higashi-futakuchi. That was a lot Japanese so let me explain. Ningyo-Joruri is a Japanese traditional puppet show dating back to the Edo period. The name "Bunya" came from Okamoto Bunya, who was a Ningyo-Joruri reciter in the late 17^th century. He was popular in Osaka for his melancholy narrative style, also referred to as "Naki-bushi (crying tone)." However, the Bunya style gradually subsided to the "Gidayuu-bushi" by Takemoto Gidayuu. Currently, Higashi-futakuchi is one of only four places that still practice "Bunya" Ningyo-Joruri. These places include Sado city (Niigata prefecture), Miyakonojo city (Miyazaki prefecture), and Satsumasendai city (Kagoshima prefecture).

It is said that a young scholar from Higashi-futakuchi learned Ningyo-joruri while studying in Kyoto and Osaka and brought the culture back to the village more than 350 years ago. The villagers instantly became hooked on this new entertainment. It was so popular that everyone quit gambling and drinking after this. Ningyo-joruri became a valuable source of distraction in the harsh winter months when the villagers could not farm and an amusement for the lunar New Year; and it has been passed down ever since.

The second year students visited Higashi-futakuchi, which is about 10 minutes by car from Hakusanroku Campus on June 25. First, Doishita-san and Yamaguchi-san gave an introduction of the history and current state of Bunya Ningyo-Joruri. Higashi-futakuchi village used to have more than one hundred houses and the villagers performed more than 40 stories. However, due to the mass migration to Hokkaido and young people leaving for the city, now there are only twelve houses and less than twenty people who continue the practice. Still, the village has preserved five stories and plays them each year in February.

After the introduction, students watched a shorten version of "Taishokkan." This story is about a shogun who fights a dragon lord of Ryugu castle to protect the gemstone "Menko-fuhai-no-tama". The dragon lord's warlord first tries to defeat the shogun in battle. When this fails, he next transforms into a beautiful maiden and tricks the shogun into giving him the gemstone. The ancient Japanese narrative was difficult to follow. However, the action and acting was surprisingly fascinating, and I could sense the students being drawn into the performance. I was especially impressed by the way the performer moving the maiden made the puppet sob when pleading for the treasure and the way the performers stamped the stage floor during the battle scene to create tension.

After the performance, students were allowed to come behind the stage and touch the various puppets. The puppets were heavier than I expected which increased my respect for the performers holding them sometimes for multiple hours for a single show. Yamaguchi-san explained how to move the puppets and that the key is to hold the puppet up to your face so that the audience can only see the puppet. Student asked questions about how the puppets were made, the beautifully painted paper lamps in the hall, and the music played during the scene.

The second-year students are given the task of choosing a problem in the local Hakusanroku community in the Engineering Design class. After this visit to Higashi-futakuchi, three students decided to focus on the revitalization of Ningyo-joruri. The group will work together to solve problems such as lack of performers/successors, and difficulty to understand the storyline due to the old Japanese dialect next semester. こんにちは、カメラマンのジョナサンです！今日は2年生の東二口の文弥人形浄瑠璃見学について振り返りたいと思います。少し解説します。人形浄瑠璃は江戸時代から続く日本の伝統的な人形芝居です。「文弥」とは語り手の岡本文弥のことで、「泣き節」と呼ばれる哀愁に満ちた語り口が17世紀後期の大阪で人気でした。しかし、竹本義太夫節の「義太夫節」の人気が増すにつれ、他の流派は上方で衰退し、地方へ伝わったと言われています。現在「文弥節」と呼ばれる人形浄瑠璃は石川県白山市（旧尾口村）、新潟県佐渡市、宮崎県都城市（旧山之口町）、鹿児島県薩摩川内市（旧東郷町）の4か所でしか残っていません。

東二口の人形浄瑠璃は今から350年ほど前、東二口集落の若者が学問のため京都や大阪へ出向いた際、当時流行していたものを習って、村に持ち帰ったのが広まったと伝えられています。村の者は人形浄瑠璃に夢中になり、それまで酒と博打に明け暮れていたような者も一切賭け事をやらなくなった程だと言われています。農作業ができない山村の厳しい冬の貴重な娯楽として、また旧正月を祝う催し物として愛され続けて今日まで伝わってきました。

2年生が訪れた東二口は白山麓キャンパスから車で約10分の距離にあります。はじめに保存会員の土居下さんと山口さんが文弥人形浄瑠璃の歴史と現状について話をしてくれました。東二口集落は以前は１００軒以上の家があり、最盛期には４０以上の演目が上演されていました。しかし、北海道への集団移住と戦後の過疎化によって、現在はわずか１２軒まで減少し、会員も１１名ほどになってしまいました。会員でも集落を離れた者が多いですが、５つの演目を毎年２月に上演して守り伝えています。

紹介のあと、学生は演目「大職冠」の短縮版を見せていただきました。これは竜宮の武将、摩醯修羅（まけいすらおう）が唐の万公将軍運宗（まんこうしょうぐんうんそう）から面向不背の玉と呼ばれる宝玉を奪おうとする場面でした。最初、竜宮の武将は武力で宝玉を奪おうとしますが、運宗に返り討ちに遭います。しかし、今度は美女に化けて運宗から宝玉をだまし取り、大蛇に変身して海に逃れます。語り手の古い日本語は難解でしたが、演者の演技と動きの迫力は想像以上で、学生たちが引き込まれるのを感じました。特に美女の人形を操り、袖を濡らして助けを乞う演技と、戦闘の迫力を増すために舞台を足で踏み叩く演技は圧巻でした。

演目が終わったあと、会員たちが学生達を舞台の上に招いて、たくさんある人形を触らせてくれました。人形は思った以上に重く、中には５時間以上も続く演目を通して操る凄さを感じました。山口さんによると人形を操るコツは顔の前に人形を構え、観客に演者の顔を見せないことだそうです。学生たちは人形の作り方、ホールに飾られている絵が描かれている提灯のこと、演目中に鳴っている三味線の音楽について質問をしました。

２年生はエンジニアリングデザインという授業で白山麓地域の課題をひとつ選び、課題解決をします。東二口を訪ねた数日後、３人の学生が人形浄瑠璃の再興をテーマにすることを選びました。このグループは後学期、文弥人形浄瑠璃が抱える演者・後継者不足、難解な古い日本語などの課題に着目して創造活動を行います。プロジェクトが進みましたら、すぐにお知らせしたいと思います。

国際理工学科２年　加藤大虎です。

本校は月に一度、自由外出できる土日があります。県内出身の学生は帰省したり、県外や海外出身の学生は金沢に行ったり、それぞれ思うままに貴重な時間を過ごします。今回はその日に皆が良く利用する金沢への外出について紹介します。

待ちに待った久しぶりの外出、6月初旬に3ヶ月ぶりに金沢市街に行きました。 (通常であれば、１か月に一度金沢へいけますが今回はコロナ渦で自粛期間があったため３ケ月ぶりとなりました)　朝、バスに集合する時間は9時で、学校から１時間ほどかけて金沢駅に向かいます。バスの中のすごし方は人それぞれですが、僕は友達としりとりをしたり、山中の景色をボーっと眺めたりします。猿がいたり、稀に鹿やノウサギもいたりして、これを見るのも道中の楽しみの一つです。

到着してからは各自１７時まで自由です。目的は様々で、家族と会う人や、買い物、リフレッシュの為、散髪、映画鑑賞や普段学食では食べられないものを食べるなど、人それぞれでした。僕は大好きな映画の「天気の子」と「君の名は」が上映されていたので、同級生と後輩と一緒に２作品を観ました。お昼には久しぶりにお寿司を食べ、日用品の買い物をしました。

大好きな２つの映画を見て感動、美味しいお寿司にまた感動、後は趣味や日用品などを買って最高の金沢外出になりました。コロナウイルスの影響で長らく寮から出ることができていなかったので、久しぶりに外へ行きリフレッシュができて良かったです。しかし、買い物の予定を立てずに行ってしまい時間をロスしたので、次行くときはメモしてから行きます笑

豆情報ですが、瀬女より朝６時台の市営のバスがあるので、そちらを利用すれば朝から金沢を満喫できますよ。そして兼六園や近江市場、鼓門等、観光地をめぐるのもおススメです。

寮生活をすると、外出して買い物や外食をしたり、映画をみたり今まで当たり前に出来ていたことがとても貴重な体験になります。いままでの価値観が変わり少しの事に感謝の気持ちが沸くようになりました。これは寮生活を過ごすからこそ気づいた事だと思います。

Hi! This is Daiko Kato, I am a second-year student of International College of Technology.

Once a month in this school, we have weekends where students can go out freely. Students from within the prefecture can go back home, while those from outside the prefectures or overseas can go to Kanazawa, so they can do whatever they want and we spend precious time there. In this article, I would like to introduce an outing to Kanazawa that we use often that day.

I went to Kanazawa city for the first time in three months in early June. (Normally, I would be able to visit Kanazawa once a month, but this time I had to refrain from going there due to the corona vortex, so it was the first time in three months.) We met on the bus at 9:00 am and head to Kanazawa station, that was about an hour away from school. Spending time on the bus was different for each person, so I spent my time chatting with my friends, watching the mountains dully, and so on. There are some monkeys sometimes around there, and in rare cases, there are deer, rabbits, and bears. This is one of the fun things on the way.

We are free to go on your own until 5 pm from when we arrived. We can meet our family, go shopping, refresh ourselves, get a haircut, watch a movie, or just enjoy a meal in the restaurants. It was different for each of us, such as eating what we couldn't eat in ICT. My two favorite movies, "Weathering With You" and "Your Name." were showing, so I watched both movies with my friends! At lunch, we had sushi for the first time in a long time and did some shopping for daily necessaries.

I watched my two favorite movies, then I was impressed and I was impressed by the delicious sushi again. The rest of the time I spent on my hobbies and shopping for daily necessities, making it the best Kanazawa outing I've ever had. It was nice to be able to go outside after a long time and get refreshed because I couldn't leave the dormitory for a long time because of the coronavirus. However, I lost my time because I didn't make any plans for my shopping, so next time I go, I'll make a timetable before I go. lol

It is a piece of minor information, but there is a city bus of 6:30 a.m. from Sena, so if you use it, you can fully enjoy Kanazawa from the early morning. I also recommend visiting Kenrokuen, Omityo Market, Tsudumimon, and other tourist spots.

When I live in the dormitory, it would be a very valuable experience to be able to do it until now, for example, go out for shopping, eating out, watching movies, and other things. My sense of value has changed and I started to thank for the little things. I think this is something I've realized because I've spent time in the dormitory.

July 7, 2020 Writers’ Celebration

The Writers’ Celebration is an opportunity for students to showcase their writing to students, teachers, and staff in the ICT Hakusanroku community. First and second year students in World Literature and English Expressions displayed various writing pieces--name affirmations, short stories, essays, etc.

We held Writers’ Celebration last year and it was beneficial for both students and teachers. Students who displayed pieces received feedback and compliments, as well as suggestions for improving their writing. Other students got to read each other’s writing and practice giving feedback and comments. Teachers had the chance to see what students were writing about, how they expressed themselves, and get to know the students a little better through their writing.

The night before the start of the celebration, many students, even those who were not displaying writing this time, stayed in the library until curfew to help set up and decorate. Even before the celebration started, there was already a festive atmosphere. Students were drawing characters, making sentences with word magnets, and putting up balloons and decorative washi tape. The students had to be chased away to make it to curfew on time.

During the Writers’ Celebration, students and teachers gathered to read the writing pieces, eat snacks, and talk and laugh together. Chips and salsa were provided and Mr. B made a special bacon cheese dip that was a huge hit with all the students. Each student’s board had a comment sheet where students and teachers could give feedback and encouragement.

Although students can often view writing as a tedious or boring part of school, the Writers’ Celebration gives our students a chance to be proud of their work and builds positivity in our community. For teachers, we get the chance to get to know our students more and reading their honest opinions and views in their writing is a delight.

Writers' Celebrationは学生たちが自分の書いた作品を白山麓キャンパスの他の学生と教職員に披露できるイベントです。世界文学と英語表現を受講している１、２年生は様々な作品（Name Affirmations、短編小説、エッセイ等）でその才能を発揮しました。

去年開催したWriters' Celebrationは学生にとっても先生にとっても有益なものでした。作品を掲示した学生はフィードバックや称賛の言葉、アドバイスを貰いました。他の学生は他人の作品を読む機会と、フィードバックと称賛を与える側を体験できました。先生たちは学生がどんなことについて書いているのか、どんな風に自身を表現するのかを見て、その作品を通して学生のことをもっとよく知ることができました。

前夜は多くの学生（作品を掲示しない学生も）消灯時間まで図書室に残って飾り付けをしました。ですので、開始前からすでに会場は盛り上がりを見せていました。学生たちはキャラクターを描いたり、単語のマグネットで文章を作ったり、風船やマスキングテープで飾り付けをしたりしていました。消灯時間になっても帰らないので、追い出さないといけなかったくらいです。

Writers' Celebration開催中は学生と先生が作品を読むために集まって、スナックを食べたり、楽しくお話したりしました。チップスとサルサソースが登場し、Mr.B特製のベーコンチーズディップは学生たちに大ウケでした。それぞれの学生のボードにはコメントシートが用意されて、他の学生や先生がフィードバックや称賛の言葉を書けるようになっていました。ライティングの課題は地味でつまらない作業というイメージもありますが、Writers' Celebrationでは学生が自ら書いた作品を自信もって披露しますので、クラスの雰囲気も良くなります。先生にとっても学生が普段思っていることや、率直な意見を読むことが出来て大変嬉しいです。

July 3, 2020 Article No. 5 “Giza pyramids”

Hello everyone! Last March, I went to Egypt with my family to visit our relatives and enjoy the sunny warm and dry weather. I used to go there in summer, but this time we decided to spend the spring vacation as it becomes longer than the summer one. When we started our trip, COVID-19 was not declared as pandemic yet. So we could enjoy going out and having tours in many different places at least in the first 10 days. I live in Giza, very near from the pyramids. It takes 5 min by car to get to there from my place. So, on one of the sunny days we visited Giza pyramids to show our children the history of their forefathers and how astonishing the pyramids and Sphinx are. My children were so impressed and they kept asking how those people could make such great buildings and how they could lift such huge blocks more than 5000 years ago without the technology that we have nowadays. The answers of these questions are still mysterious and Egyptologists are trying to demystify that. As an engineer and a math teacher, I utilized that chance to explain to my kids how the ancient Egyptians invented Trigonometry to adjust the pyramids angles, side lengths and the inclination of the surfaces. After spending nice time and taking many pictures at the place, we all went back proud of our ancestors.

皆さん、ごきげんよう！去る3月、家族と一緒にエジプトにいる親戚を訪ねて、さわやかな暖かい天候を楽しんできました。いつもは夏休みに行くのですが、最近は春休みのほうが長いので今年はこの時期に行くことにしました。出発した時は新型コロナウィルスがパンデミックとして宣言される前で、最初の10日間は様々な場所へ出かけたり、ツアーに参加したりすることができました。私の家はピラミッドの近くのギザにあります。自動車で5分の距離です。せっかくだったので、子供たちに祖先の偉功とピラミッドとスフィンクスの偉大さを見せるべくギザのピラミッドを訪れました。子供たちは驚愕のあまり、5000年以上前の技術でどうやってこんな大きい建物を作ることができたのか、どうやってこんな重たいブロックを持ち上げることができたのか、質問が絶えませんでした。この問いの答えはいまだにエジプト学者が解き明かせていない謎です。エンジニア、そして数学教師として、この機会を逃すまいと子供たちに古代エジプト人が三角法を使ってピラミッドの角度、横の長さ、そして表面の角度を調節したことを説明しました。楽しい時間を過ごして写真を撮ったあとは祖先への誇りを胸に帰宅しました。

June 26, 2020 鷲走ヶ岳 登山

Hello, it's Jonathan the cameraman. On June 21 (Sun), the Nature & Adventure Club finally held its first activity of the year in the form of a hike to the top of Wasso-ga-take. Due to COVID-19, clubs here at Hakusanroku Campus were restricted from doing any group activities. This restriction was lifted on the 19th and this was our first weekend after it. Our first chance was a beautiful sunny Sunday and we jumped to the opportunity.

The Nature & Adventure Club is one of Hakusanroku Campus's three clubs and focuses on interacting with the local community and nature surrounding the school. Twelve first and second year students, Yamazaki-sensei, Katabe-sensei, Philip-sensei, Owari coach, and myself gathered at the campus entrance at 8:30 am for total of 17 people. Wasso-ga-take is a mountain a couple of miles southwest of Hakusanroku campus near Tedori Lake. We started our hike from Higashi-Futakuchi. It was sunny. However, the trees protected us from the sun and most of the climb was through the cool shady woods.

We reached the top of Wasso-ga-take a little before noon and enjoyed the view over lunch. This peak is 1096m high and we could see green mountains and even Mt. Hakusan in the distance. After lunch, we split into two groups as we descended. One group went straight down and the other group, who wanted more, made a detour to a second mountain called Shironuki-yama (891m). Here, we could see Tedori Lake below. We regrouped and walked down through the woods, arriving at Higashi-Futakuchi around 2:30 pm.

Mountain climbing is one of the Nature & Adventure Club's main attractions and I was glad to finally get one done. Today's climb also gave new students a taste of what it is like, which they can use to decide whether they want to participate in the Mt. Hakusan climb planned on July 5. It seemed like the students enjoyed their walk through the woods and I hope they take up the challenge. Until then, see you!

こんにちは、カメラマンのジョナサンです！6月21日（日）にネイチャー＆アドベンチャークラブが今年最初の活動、鷲走ヶ岳登山をしました。新型コロナウィルスの影響で白山麓キャンパスはすべてのクラブ活動が禁止されていました。これが6月19日に解除され、さっそく次の週末を抑えたところ、スカっと晴れた青空に恵まれたので出動になった次第です。

ネイチャー＆アドベンチャークラブは白山麓キャンパスの3つのクラブのひとつで、周辺地域や自然と触れ合う活動を行っています。参加したのは1，2年の学生が12名、山崎先生、潟辺先生、フィリップ先生、尾張コーチ、私を含めた合計17名です。鷲走ヶ岳は白山麓キャンパスの南西に位置する山で、手取湖の近くです。当日は8：30に集合して東二口の登山口からスタートしました。日差しは強かったですが、道のほとんどは涼しい森の中だったため、心地よい木漏れ日の中を進むことができました。

鷲走ヶ岳の山頂に到着したのは12時少し前で、お昼ご飯を食べながら素敵な景色を眺めることができました。ここの標高は1096ｍで周辺の緑の山々と遠くに白山も望むことができました。帰りは二手に分かれて下山を開始しました。ひとつはまっすぐ降りるグループで、もうひとつは白抜山という2つ目の山（891m）を経由して降りる「まだ物足りない」グループです。1時間ほどで到着した白抜山の頂上からは手取湖が眼下に見えました。その後は前のグループと合流し、再び森の中を東二口まで下りました。下山は14：30頃でした。

山登りはネイチャー＆アドベンチャークラブのメインイベントのひとつなので、ようやく始動できてほっとしています。今回の登山のもうひとつの目的は新入部員に登山を体験させ、7月に予定されている白山登山に参加するかどうかの判断材料にしてもらうことです。自分が見ていた学生たちは楽しそうに歩いていたので、参加してくれたらいいな、と期待しています。その時にまたお会いしましょう。それでは！

June 26, 2020 Operation

Classes are starting to get back to normal. I am quite happy about that as it is going to allow me try out a cross disciplinary team project in the Bridge Biology class.

Are you familiar with the game “Operation”? If you’re not, here’s a link to an early 80s tv advertisement for the game. 

To play this game, you have to choose a card and remove the problem from the patient with tweezers, without touching the sides. The problems are things like Brain Freeze, Butterflies in the Stomach and Funny Bone. If you can successfully remove the problem, you get points. The player with the most points wins the game. If the tweezers touch the sides as you are removing the problem, it completes a circuit and an alarm sounds and you don’t get any points. I used to play this game when I was a boy, but always lost to my father. It was an unfair competition, since he was a surgeon.

Anyhow, to learn about cell biology, cell organelles and their functions, the Bridge Biology class is going to build versions of “Operation.” Plant and animal cells are going to take the place of the patient and organelles like nucleus, chloroplast and ribosome are going to take the place of the problems. After choosing a card which gives the organelle function, for example, “Where a plant cell makes food,” students will have to identify the organelle (chloroplast) and try to remove it from the cell without setting off an alarm.

This is not just a Biology project. Besides the cell organelles and their functions, students are going to learn English, Electronics/Engineering, Design and Programming. To complete the project, student teams are going to have to design their game, program the game with Scratch, build the game with a Makey-Makey microcontroller and do it all in English. After each team finishes building their game, they will demonstrate their game and let other teams play it. By building and playing these games, students will be able to learn and review key Biology concepts and the games will be available for future students to help them with their Biology classes.

ようやく通常の授業形態に戻ってきました。ブリッジイングリッシュの生物の時間にあるチームプロジェクトを試そうと思っていたので嬉しいです。

Operationというゲームはご存知ですか？知らない人はこちらの80年代のテレビCMをご覧ください。

このゲームでは、カードを引いて、書いてある症状を患者の体から穴の端に触れずにピンセットで抜き取らなければなりません。症状はド忘れ、胸やけ、足が棒になるなどです。症状を取り除けばポイントがもらえ、ポイントを1番多く獲った人の勝ちです。ピンセットが穴の端に触れると回路が繋がり、アラームが鳴ってポイントがもらえません。子供の頃よくこのゲームで遊びましたが、いつも父親に負けてしまいました。勝てっこないですよ、彼は外科医だったんですから。

話が脱線しましたが、ブリッジイングリッシュの生物の時間では細胞生物学の細胞小器官とその機能を学ぶためにオリジナルのOperationを作ることにしました。患者の代わりに植物や動物の細胞、症状の代わりに核、葉緑体、リボソームなどの細胞小器官を使います。例えば「植物細胞が食事を作る場所」と書かれているカードを引いたら、対応する細胞小器官（葉緑体）を、アラームを鳴らさずに取り除く、といった具合です。

これはただの生物のプロジェクトではありません。細胞小器官の名前と機能を覚えるだけではなく、英語、電子工学、デザイン、プログラミングを複合的に学びます。プロジェクトを完成させるにはゲームをデザインして、スクラッチを使ってプログラムを組んで、Makey-Makeyのマイコンを使ってボードを作る必要があります。しかも、すべて英語でです。それぞれのチームのゲームが完成したら、デモンストレーションをして他のチームに遊ばせます。自分たちでゲームを作って遊ぶことによって、生物の基礎知識を高めます。また、ゲームは今後入学してくる学生の学習のために残り続けるのです。

June 22, 2020 ヒルクライムサイクリング

こんにちは。今年も研究プロジェクト主事とNature & Adventure Club顧問を担当している山崎です。新型コロナ感染防止に伴う外出制限が解除された週末、学生たちと一緒に近くの山にサイクリングに行きました。サイクリングと言っても、スキー場の山頂ゴンドラ駅までの林道を登るもので、キャンパスから山頂まで約9.5km、標高差726m、平均勾配７.6％という本格的なヒルクライムコースです。この日参加したのはS１の田窪君、中里君、 S2の畠中君の３名。同行するスタッフは体育のフィリップ先生と事務局の本田さんと私。田窪君は自身のロードバイクを持参、他の学生はNature & Adventure ClubのMTBを駆って参加しました。

Hello, this is Yamazaki, still in charge of Research Projects and the Nature & Adventure Club. Restrictions due to COVID-19 have been loosened so I went cycling with some of the students on Sunday. This isn't your typical cycling though. It's a 9.5km long, 726m total elevation, average slope of 7.6% serious hill climb through woods to the gondola station on top of the ski resort near the Hakusanroku Campus. Three students joined us today: Takubo and Nakazato (both S1) and Hatanaka (S2). Accompanying staff were Philip-sensei, our PE teacher, Honda-san of the office, and myself. Takubo brought his own road bike and the other students used the mountain bikes own by the club.

キャンパスを９時に出発、約１０分で林道の入り口に到着。ここからが、ヒルクライムのコースとなるため、全員で記念撮影をしました。中里君は未経験とあって少し緊張した面持ちです。

We left the campus at 9 am and reached the entrance to the path in about 10 minutes. Here is a photo we took before the hill climb. This was Nakazato's first time and he looks a little nervous.  

 

スタートすると、フィリップ先生と本田さんはタイムアタックモードで直ぐに姿が見えなくなりました。その後を畠中君と田窪君がマイペースで走行。中里君は慣れない激坂とバイクコントロールに手を焼きながら先行する４人を追いかけます。私は中里君と並走しながら途中何度も足をつき苦しそうな彼を、おしゃべりで気分を盛り上げながらゆっくり進みます。スタートして１時間ほどで、山頂ゴールを折り返して降りてきたフィリップ先生と本田さんが合流。二人は山頂まで僅か50分で登ったとのことで、流石です。中里君も皆んなに励まされながら１時間3０分で山頂に無事到着。本当に良く頑張りました。一方、畠中君たちは１時間７分で登頂ということで、シーズン初としては上出来でした。

Philip-sensei and Honda-san were trying for a personal best and rode out of sight immediately. Hatanaka and Takubo followed them at their own pace. Nakazato struggled getting used to controlling a bike on a mountain path and tried to keep up. I rode alongside him hopeful that chatting would keep his spirits up. After about an hour, Philip-sensei and Honda-san rejoined us on their way back. Apparently, they reach the top in about 50 minutes; astonishing work. Nakazato also reached the top after about an hour and a half with the moral support of the team. He did a great job. Hatanaka and Takubo's time was 1 hour and 7 minutes. Well done everyone.

登頂後の記念撮影では、皆完走した達成感が溢れ、清々しい笑顔を見せてくれました。また、眼下には手取湖のほか白山麓キャンパスも望むことができ、素晴らしい眺望を堪能しました。白山麓キャンパスは周辺にこうした林道がたくさんあって、サイクリングを楽しむには最高の環境です。

We took a group photo at the top and you can see the feeling of accomplishment on the faces after completing the run. The view was extraordinary and you can see Tedori Lake and even the Hakusanroku Campus. ICT has many mountain paths like this a is a wonderful environment for cyclists.

6月1日は創立記念日で学生はお休みでした。コロナ禍を乗り切るため、ずっと寮内で耐えてきた学生たち。朝９時に、今年初めての金沢行きのバスが白山麓から出発しました。いつもだと遅れてくる学生がいて、定時に出発できないことが多いそうですが、今朝は時間通りです。カフェコーナーに家で咲いた花を飾っていたら、１年生の史依さんが一番乗り、史依さんは実家へ帰るとのこと。二番手はやはり一年生の森介君、金沢市内の人気ラーメン店『真打』へ行ってから、『みなと模型』で久しぶりに大好きな自動車のプラモデルを購入したいと計画を語ってくれました。その後も続々と、マスクを着用した学生たちがバスに乗車していきます。おしゃれな出で立ちで髪を切りたいという学生、『天気の子』『君の名は』の二本立て映画を鑑賞するという学生、みな楽しげに乗り込んでいきました。コロナ以前は何ということもなかったことですが、今となっては「バスに乗って金沢へ行く」という、ただそれだけで特別な体験です。

私も日曜日に、翌日から再開する中学校へ通う娘を連れ、学用品の購入に野々市市内の100円ショップを訪れたのですが、少し怯むほどの人出でした。久しぶりの外出、月曜日なのでそんなに混雑はしていないでしょうが、ウイルス感染予防には充分に留意して楽しんできてください。

June 1 was our school's 63^rd anniversary and students had the day off. Since the coronavirus outbreak, students have been cramped in their dorms. At 9:00 am, the first bus to Kanazawa departed from Hakusanroku Campus. You might or might not be surprised to hear that everyone was on schedule this morning. I was decorating the café corner with some flowers when the earliest student, first-year Shii arrived. When asked, she replied that she would spend the day with her parents at home. Runner-up was Morisuke as usual. He answered that he planned to eat lunch at a popular ramen shop "真打 Shin-uchi" and go to "みなと模型 Minato Model Shop" and buy one of his favorite car model kits. The rest of the students climbed into the bus one by one; with their masks on. Some were dressed up and said they would go to a beauty parlor. Others spoke about watching the movies "天気の子 Weathering with You" and "君の名は Your Name" back to back. Everyone looked excited and happy. The monthly bus to Kanazawa was nothing special before the corona situation, but that has changed.

My daughter's junior high school will also reopened, and we went shopping at a 100 yen one coin shop in Nonoichi. I was almost staggered at how many people were there. I assume that Kanazawa will not be as crowded on a Monday, but hopefully everyone will stay safe and enjoy their day off.

June 5, 2020 オンライン授業での発見

コロナウィルスの影響で全国の学校で「オンライン授業」の取り組みが頻繁にテレビやネット記事に取り上げられているのを目にします。学校や地域によっては、プリントを渡して生徒へ丸投げの形になってしまったり、ICT活用に普及のない学校は大変な苦労をしているようです。さて、国際高専はどうでしょうか。入学時に各学生に1台のパソコンが配布され、Wifi環境があり、普段からテクノロジーに慣れている学生のおかげでオンライン授業へスムーズに移行できたのではと私は思います。そんな中、今日はオンライン授業とオフライン授業での違いから感じたことを少し紹介したいと思います。

まずは、トラブルについてです。それなりの環境下にあっても機材や通信のトラブルは常に心配事のひとつです。何度も画面越しに私から学生へ話しかけても返事がないことがありました。ただでさえ、周りに誰もいない部屋で一人で画面に向かって話しているのに、学生から返事がないと悲しくなってしまいます。結局は、私と学生側のマイクの設定に問題があったことは後にわかりました。

他にも、学生と教員が作り出す「場の空気」を共有できないもどかしさがあります。物理的には顔と顔は画面越しに見えてはいるものの、学生の集中している様子であったり、質問がありそうな雰囲気を一瞬で把握するのは難しく感じています。ただ、2年生とは昨年1年間の関係を築けているせいか、意外とオンライン授業でもお互いの空気を感じられているのではと思います。

まだまだ他にもオンライン授業での困難はたくさんありますが、私が最も強く感じたことは、こういった急な変化に対応できる力が学生にも教員にもこれから必要だということです。コロナウィルス以前にも、世界中の大学院はすでにオフラインからオンラインへと移行し、実際にその国の「キャンパス」へ通わなくとも学位を取ることが可能となっています。近い将来、教育のオンライン化が進むと教員も学生も「学校」というオフラインのプラットフォームから、何か違ったプラットフォーム上での教育が可能となるかもしれません。ただ、いずれにしても、学習者本位になっているかという点だけはオンラインだろうがオフラインだろうがブレてはいけないものであり、様々な選択肢の中からベストな手段を見つけ、実行していきたいと、このオンライン授業を通じて感じました。

とはいうものの、やはり早く教室に戻りたいな。。。

Lately, many schools are conducting "online classes" due to the situation of the coronavirus. Some schools just give students worksheets and call it a day. In general, schools with low ICT infrastructure have a harder time adapting to the situation. How about ICT you say? Thanks to the fact that each student receives a laptop computer on entry, we have wifi throughout the campus, and that our students are relatively accustom to using technology, I believe our transition to online was considerably smooth. In this journal entry, I would like to talk about some things I learned teaching both online.

First, let's talk about the things that went wrong. Despite our facilities, we could not avoid technical issues. There was a time when students would not react to my voice, which made me feel pretty lonely considering I was in my room talking to a screen alone. Later, we found out that there was a problem with our microphones.

It was also frustrating not being able to share the same "classroom atmosphere" as the students. Even though I could see everyone's face on my screen, it isn't the same as seeing them in person; I couldn't see how hard they are concentrating or if someone looks lost and in need of assistance. However, it was easier to feel the vibe of the second-year students, probably because we have already spent one year together.

I could continue talking about the difficulties of online classes. However, the thing I felt the most is that both students and teachers must develop the ability to adapt to sudden situations like this. At oversea graduate schools, there was a movement from offline to online before the coronavirus outbreak and students can get their degree from another country without even stepping on campus ground. In the close future, I believe this movement from offline education to online education will lead to a change from the current offline platform to something new. In any case, we must remember that whatever the platform may be, it must be designed with students put at top priority. I have a renewed passion to choose the best methods from the choices our future technology provides us.

Also, I just want to go back to teaching in the classroom.

June 3, 2020 紅はるか芋の苗植え付け

こんにちは！国際理工学科2年の加藤大虎です。白山麓ジャーナル初投稿です。今回は”紅はるか芋の苗植え付け”のお手伝いをしました。とても楽しかったのでジャーナルにてご紹介します。

前日、天気予報では雨模様ということで、ドキドキしていましたが、当日は曇りになり、活動ができ嬉しかったです。
コロナウイルスの影響で、クラブ活動ではなく個人活動という形で、僕を合わせて友人3人と活動に参加しました。

作業内容は、クラブの先生方と地域の方がトラクター作業と苗植えの8割をしてくださり、残り2割を学生が行うというものでした。(コロナ対策として、学生が作業をしている際、先生や地元の方はトラクターの清掃作業に移り、3密を避けました)

苗の植え方は、収量が安定する船底植えという方法で行いました。畝の中央を10cm程掘り、株間40cm程で、そこに斜めに苗づるを寝かせ、茎の部分に土をかけるという植え方でした。

苗を植えている最中に、カメムシのような虫が出てきて驚きました。また、船底植えは、苗を均等に植えるのが思っていたより難しくて、悪戦苦闘しました。
秋になったらエンジニアリングデザインの授業で、今回植えた芋の収穫をするので、自分達が植えた芋の成長が大変楽しみです。昨年は猿に荒らされ、大きな被害を被ったので今年は対策をしっかりしたいです。
新緑の中で作業ができ、とても気持ちよくて楽しかったです。

Hi! My name is Daiko Kato and I am a second-year student of international college of technology. This is my first contribution to the Hakusanroku Journal. This time, we helped to plant the "Beni Haruka" potato seedlings. I enjoyed it so much, so that I'm sharing it in here.

The day before, the weather forecast said for rain, so we were nervous about it, but it turned out to be cloudy on the day, so we were happy to be able to carry out our activities.

Due to the effects of the coronavirus, it was not a club activity, but an individual activity, and I participated to the activity with three of my friends.

Eighty percent of the work was done by the club's teachers and local resident, and the remaining 20 percent was done by the students. (As a measure for COVID-19, teachers and local resident moved on to tractor cleanup work while students were working to avoid the “3MITSU”)

We planted the seedlings by used “Funazokoue” that can stable yields. “Funazokoue”: 1. Dig about 10 cm in the center of the ridges. 2. Put the sapling in a diagonal position with about 40cm between the plants. 3. Cover the stems with soil.

While I was planting the seedlings, I was surprised because of I saw a bug that looked like a stink bug. Also, it was more difficult than I expected to plant the seedlings evenly by using “Funazokoue”, so I had a hard time doing it.

In the fall, we will be harvesting the potatoes we grow in our engineering design class, so we are very much looking forward to seeing the growth of the potatoes we planted. Last year, we were ravaged by monkeys and suffered a lot of damage, so we want to take better measures this year.

It was very pleasant and fun to work in the new greenery.

"I'm sure the sweet potatoes picked in Hakusan will be delicious. I can't wait for fall. :)"
