March 31, 2023 2

Makada

Hello, this is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office. I would like to write about the various extracurricular workshops held in February.

【Pen spinning】

On Monday, February 6th, a workshop called Pen Spinning was held by Learning Mentor, Jomkit Jujaroen sensei. Jomkit sensei wanted to teach something fun to students, who are usually hard at work on their schoolwork. He decided to hold this workshop to teach them pen spinning, which Jomkit sensei was addicted to when he was a student.
Jomkit sensei taught the students pen spinning techniques such as spinning a pen around the thumb, spinning a pen between two fingers and a tricky technique to spin a pen using all four fingers. Some students struggled with pen spinning. Others used a drumstick instead of a pen and spun the drumstick in a spectacular manner.
The act of pen spinning can help the brain to concentrate when it is nervous or working on a difficult task and spinning a pen can help to relieve tension. He said he would be happy if he could help his students to focus and relax by using their own pens.

【Python

【Learning the Basics of Python】

On Wednesday, February 8th, Friday, February 10th and Wednesday, February 15th, a workshop called Learning the Basics of Python was held by Meguru Ito sensei (Pro.). Students learned how to write basic Python code and then learned functions for conditional branching, iteration and random number generation. At the end of the workshop, the students were challenged to create a program for a number-guessing game in which the player has to guess a random computer-generated number.

【Hand Lettering】

On Thursday, February 9th, a workshop called Hand Lettering was held by Learning Mentor, Anne Isobel Tan sensei. Hand lettering is a calligraphy technique in which the alphabet is written using colored pens or brush pens. This gives it a unique and stylish look.
Students were assigned the task of hand-lettering their own names and some students copied a sample typeface and practiced how to write it over and over again. Other students wrote their names using a type face that came to them in the spur of the moment. Some other students used their image of their classmates to design how names were written by the students showed the warmth and softness that only hand-written letters can express.

【AI Programming with CiRA CORE】

On Wednesday, February 15th, a workshop called AI Programming with CiRA CORE workshop was held by Learning Mentor, Apirak Sang-ngenchai sensei. CiRA CORE is a drag-and-drop block programming platform. Students learned how to write program flows and experimented with object identification and face recognition. The students were surprised that the computer recognized their faces and they showed strong interest in the program.

【Filmmaking】

On Friday, February 17th and Wednesday, February 22nd, a two-day Filmmaking workshop was held by Nagwa Fekri Rashed sensei (Prof.). First, Afaf Alaa, a 3rd

year student who excels at video production, gave a lecture via Zoom to the participants on tips for shooting videos, introducing editing applications and how to use the images in their minds to create scenarios. The students were divided into two groups and worked on a videos introducing What To Do and What Not To Do in the laboratory. Students directed, filmed and edited their own videos about things such as handling emergencies (accidents and first aid), handling lab equipment, as well as rules about hairstyles and eating and drinking in the laboratory.
Here are some of the videos produced by the students. I hope you enjoy them!

【Farewell Party】

On Tuesday, February 27th, a farewell party was held at the Hakusanroku campus for the 2nd year students who would be leaving the dormitory and for departing faculty members. The students presented Yutaka Katabe sensei (Prof.) and Learning Mentor, Anne Isobel Tan sensei with message cards and T-shirts with portraits drawn by Saran Kakita, a 2nd year student. Afterwards, students and faculty enjoyed their last time together at the Hakusanroku Campus, talking while eating pizza and decorating cookies together.
In April, the new 3rd year students will begin their new adventure of studying abroad at Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand for one year. This study abroad experience will be a great experience for the students. We are look forward to the success of these students.

Kanazawa Institute of Technology's Graduation Thesis Presentations

Hello! This is Rikuto Nishihara, a 1st-year student at ICT. Monday, February 13th, 2023, as part of my extracurricular activities, I attended the Kanazawa Institute of Technology's (KIT) graduation thesis presentation called Project Design III Public Presentation Review Meeting. There I was able to observe graduating KIT students present their work. I mainly watched the presentations by the Mechanical Engineering and Information Technology Departments and the poster session presented by the Robotics Department. I felt that the presentations we usually give are quite different.
I felt that particular differences were the content and its presentation. Of course, the content is different for university students, but I felt that the KIT students put more emphasis on practical use. This is because the students at the university took into account various conditions such as temperature, humidity, region, and the age of the people who use the devices.
Then they experimented to find improvements and made  better products. In addition to that, KIT students collected data for their presentations. I was impressed and respected the fact that they did not cut corners in collecting data, which requires a lot of time, money, and resources.
They also spoke smoothly without looking at their papers and added gestures that were easy to understand, which showed how much they had practiced. I would like to do my best as a 2nd-year student as well, so that I can consider various patterns, create better products, and present them with an eye toward the future, just like the students at KIT.

Winter Sports Day

Winter Sports Day 2023/02/28

Hakusanroku Winter Sports Day    February, 28th 2023

I am KTB, a member of the Japanese language department. I became obsessed with the deeply fascinating sport of skiing around the age of 35. At that time, my goal was to go skiing every year for the same number of days as my age. I used to go to Hakusan Chugu Onsen ski resort, which is no longer in operation, as much as three times a week. (Of course, now I am not competing to go as many times per year as my age). Being a careless person, I once left my skies in the parking of the Chugu ski resort. I noticed this a week later and went to get them, but they already had become rental skis (I was disappointed to find that the boots no longer fit and that the 'Ski Idiot' sticker, which had marked the right ski, had been removed.). And on another day I forgot my boots at Hakuba Happo One ski resort in April and didn't realize it until December. One time when I was sleeping overnight in my car in the parking lot, I was invited to stay at the dormitory by Mr. Hiromura, the principal of Chugu Pro Ski School. I was also given a drink and hard tofu, which is one of this region's specialty foods. The girls at the ticket booth told me twice that I had won a prize for perfect attendance.
Skiing used to be very popular. On weekends, there was a 30-minute wait for the lifts on the all-night ski slopes, even at 2 a.m. Hakusan Chugu Onsen ski resort even had a winter fireworks display on the slopes.
One of the best things about skiing (and the same can be said for guitar) is that you can make friends with anyone on the spot, transcending age and gender differences. At a ski school camp in Naeba, I once hit it off with a boy I was sharing a room with named "Yuta," a second year junior high school student, and after dinner we skied together on the night slope.
I also went skiing in New Zealand. In the hotel lift, a local asked me, "Which ski resort did you go to?" When I replied “Treble Cone” (a ski resort famous for its vast zones of powder), he smiled back and said That's exciting! It was also skiing that gave me the opportunity to meet the woman who would become my wife.
Anyway, skiing has added a wonderful color to my life. That is why I have always had the desire to be a "ski evangelist" and convey the charm of skiing to students since I started working at the Hakusanroku Campus.
And the day came when that wish came true. This year, the skiing activity, which had been held as a Nature and Adventure (N & A) club activity, was held as a Hakusanroku Winter Sports Day on Tuesday, February 28th as an activity for the entire Hakusanroku Campus. As a result, last year there were 4 N & A Club students and 4 faculty members at the event, but this year there were 23 students who wanted to participate and 17 faculty & staff members from ICT, making it a big event with a total of 40 skiers and snowboarders.
In the morning, three instructors from the Hakusan Ichirino Onsen Ski School were invited to do a training session with three groups: the novice group (6 students & Kihara-Sensei), the beginner group (6 students & Tsuda-Sensei) and the intermediate group (8 students). The advanced group (3 students) was led by Philip-Sensei and me, and we went hard on the difficult course from the morning.
After the lesson, we had lunch at the Ai-Aru restaurant in the ski resort. I had the curry with pork cutlet, which Philip-Sensei highly praises as "the best in the world!" The curry was delicious, with freshly fried pork cutlets.
Philip-Sensei said "Ichirino's cutlet curry is the best in the world!" However now "Ichirino" seems to be number two because the food prepared by Philip's fiancée is so delicious. Philip's wonderful fiancée is from Kanazawa Sakuragaoka High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, and her 1st year homeroom teacher in Sakuragaoka High School was, to my surprise, me (I didn't introduce them to each other, it was just another chance encounter).
In the afternoon, we enjoyed free skiing with our groups. In the intermediate and advanced group, there was a student (a guitarist in a student band called Electronic Heart Mothers) who flew off of the forest course run because he was too free. Fortunately, he was uninjured, but Yamazaki-Sensei, the leader of the group, thought that his heart had stopped.
I led the beginner group in the afternoon, and on the lift after 2 p.m. I heard one student muttering,
“Sensei, today I rode the wind.
It seems that on the eve of my retirement, I was present at the birth of a "poet skier".
On a personal note, I am sorry to say, I have chosen to retire at the age of 60. In April I will be taking on a new challenge (enrolling in a culinary school to obtain a chef's license). I have enjoyed spending time with the students at ICT, camping, skiing, playing the guitar and have felt that they have been like young friends. After the last show of the band on Thursday, March 2nd, we didn't make any promises to meet again, and we didn't say goodbye, but I have a feeling we will see each other again.

Because we are friends.

Thank you.

March 23, 2023

Hello, this is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office. In late January, the Japanese archipelago, including the area around the Hakusanroku campus, was hit by a cold wave. A low temperature of -7℃ was recorded and about a meter of snow fell. In this weather, 1st and 2nd year Health and Physical Education classes were held outside and they did things like making an igloo, having a snowball fight and building a snowman.

On Thursday, January 26th, the 2nd year Health and Physical Education class made a block-shaped igloo, under the guidance of their Physical Education teacher, Philip Cadzow sensei. Students pressed snow into rectangular plastic containers to shape them into snow blocks and arranged the blocks in a circular shape. The snow blocks were then stacked one on top of the other, one after the other, to create a one-meter high igloo. It was impressive to see the students focused on building the igloo.

On Monday, January, 30th, the 1st year Health and Physical Education classes had a snowball fight and built a snowman. For the snowball fight, the students split into 2 teams. Then they shoveled through waist-deep piles of snow, made paths for the snowball fight and built a snow wall for a shelter on their own territory. Students hid in their shelters for a few minutes to see what the other team would do, and then both teams attacked. This was followed by the building of a snowman, where the students worked together to build a 4-level snowman.
The students, some of whom had never touched snow before, were able to enjoy the unique nature of HAKUSANROKU (Foothills of Mt. Hakusan).

March 1, 2023

Hello, this is Yuri Makada from Hakusanroku office. This time, I would like to write about the Visual Arts I (1st grade) class.
The purpose of this class is to cultivate the ability to think and express one’s thoughts through creative activities in art, crafts, and design. Observing everyday scenery from a different perspective can lead to new discoveries and ideas. In order to generate good ideas, it is important to observe things in daily life rather than relying only on random ideas. Sometimes it is also important to solve the problems that one encounters in life.

In the first class, students experienced observing everyday life to gain a lot of information. This is an opportunity to learn that each person feels differently even when looking at the same scenery and that there is more than one answer. Through out this phase, students learned about the importance of having a broad perspective and diverse values, and they express themselves more freely.

In the next phase, students created structures using paper. Students learned what design is all about, aiming to create simple structural expressions based on an understanding of the characteristics of the material. In another assignment, students create functional and precise shapes, and develop the techniques and knowledge needed for this assignment.

After these phases, students engaged in design activities. Students worked in pairs to find out through conversation what they perceived as inconveniences in their daily lives and created prototypes to improve their daily lives. The students asked their partner to check the primary model, and received user opinions such as “Is this part of the model necessary?”, “I would like to see a little more improvement here", etc., then reflected their new findings in the second model. In the 1st iteration, students think with their hands, and based on the new insights they gain from this process, they deepen their thinking. This process is done to verify whether the design is valuable and what the user really needs, and improvements are made in the 2nd iteration.

After the students created their 2nd iteration, they presented what the users wanted and how the model could be improved. Students actively asked questions and shared their opinions with the presenters. This showed that they were able to see the ideas of others from various perspectives, and they tried to create various ideas with an understanding of the structure of things. The learning in this Visual Arts program will be put to good use in their future activities.

January 27, 2023

Hello, this is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office. This time, I would like to write about various Christmas events that were held.

On Wednesday, December 14th, a gorgeous Christmas tree with lovely decorations and lights was set up in the Living Commons by faculty members and students, creating a heartwarming Christmas atmosphere on campus.

Gingerbread House Making

On Saturday, December 17th, the school cafeteria (the Golden Eagle Cafeteria) hosted a Christmas event called gingerbread house making. Gingerbread is a baked sweet made with ginger, cinnamon and honey. The students used icing to build a ginger bread house and drew patterns on it, and then decorated it with colorful chocolate candies to create a lovely house. Some students spent a long time working on their creations and some students finished building their gingerbread house quickly so that they could eat them as soon as possible.

Christmas Party

This year, the Christmas party was held on Wednesday, December 21st. This was a little early because the students would be at home on Christmas Day (December 25th). Learning Mentors, Anne Isobel Tan sensei, Apirak Sang-ngenchai sensei, and Jomkit Jujaroen sensei prepared cupcakes, cookies, and ice cream for the students. Karaoke and video game contests were also held between the students and faculty members, which was a lot of fun.
After that, "Secret Santa" was held. Students had written down their favorite foods, colors, hobbies, etc. on questionnaires and these were distributed randomly among the students. As the name suggests, "Secret Santa" is a Christmas gift exchange in which the identity of the gift giver is kept secret.
When the students received and opened their Christmas gifts, their eyes sparkled and the atmosphere was warm and festive. The gifts received by the students included sports equipment, snow toys, food, original T-shirts, all thoughtful items chosen with the recipients in mind. The students enjoyed thinking about guessing who their Secret Santa was.

Christmas Special Dinner

On Thursday, December 22nd, the Golden Eagle Cafeteria served a special Christmas dinner. This included strawberry shortcake and a large serving of roast chicken that was bigger than the palm of your hand. The roast chicken was juicy and satisfying, and the students said it was delicious!!!

January 25, 2023

Hello everyone. I’m James Taylor from the English Department.
We finally got our first snow at Hakusanroku Campus on the morning of 14th December. Since then, it’s hardly stopped snowing. The scenery is beautiful, but sometimes it feels as if we’re living in a monochrome world.

Another benefit of the snow is that it encourages the students to go outside. In the 10-minute breaks between morning classes and afternoon classes, students have been rushing out to jump around and pelt each other with snowballs. For many of them, this is their first experience with snow. It’s a great opportunity for them to get some fresh air and exercise between long periods of concentration.

Also on 14th December, the Oguchi Social Welfare Council, which is based in Oguchi Community Centre, delivered Christmas cakes to households with children. My son and daughter were very pleased! My son ate the Father Christmas, my daughter had the reindeer, and I got the snowman.

Then, on 20th December I went to Oguchi Community Centre for my monthly English Café event. This month’s event was a Christmas party. We started by decorating the tree, then learnt some words related to Christmas before playing a Christmas-themed game of bingo. 18 people, including 9 children, from the local area attended and had a lot of fun. As ever, the Community Centre staff put a lot of time and effort into preparing for the event; I’m very grateful for that.

I always look forward to the opportunity to interact with people from the neighborhood.

Value-Added Products from Abandoned Land
Collaboration products using Kosen Beniharuka cultivated by 2nd year ICT students

Hello! My name is Hideo Shitaka, and I am in charge of the Public Relations for ICT.
Beginning on a personal note, I was born in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. My father's family home is in Ashikuraji, which is located in Tateyama Sanroku (Foothills of Mt. Tateyama). If it were in Ishikawa Prefecture, it would be the HAKUSANROKU (Foothills of Mt. Hakusan) area where the Hakusanroku campus of ICT is located. Even so, I have no memory of seeing wild monkeys before.

I was surprised to see a troop of monkeys slowly and fearlessly crossing in front of my car in broad daylight on the road in front of the Hakusanroku Campus in October of this year. There were more than I expected. It was the moment that I realized that Japan’s mountainous regions are now in a negative downward spiral. Due to the aging of the population, there is a decrease in agricultural workers accompanied by an increase in abandoned farmland and crop damage from animals.

As part of the Engineering Design class at ICT, 2nd year students are engaged in what is called the Agriculture Innovation Project, utilizing the abandoned farmland in front of the school building. This year, the nine 2nd year students are divided into two groups. The Agribusiness Group cultivates sweet potatoes called Beniharuka and learns business management practices while running an agribusiness corporation, including advertising, sales, and accounting. The Animal Damage Prevention Team works on developing an AI-based system to prevent crop damage.

Here, I will introduce some of the Agribusiness Group activities from October and November.

Kosen Beniharuka Branding

On Sunday, October 30th and Thursday, November 3rd, 2nd year students sold Kosen Beniharuka branded baked sweet potatoes at Sena Roadside Station in front of the Hakusanroku Campus.
The students produced and sold baked sweet potatoes under the brand name of Kosen Beniharuka. They also created signs and posters.
I went to see the event on both days and heard that the baked sweet potatoes were so delicious that some people said they came back to buy more, so they sold out on both days.
Since Monday, November 14th, small bowls of sweet potato have been available at the restaurant La TERRA on the Kanazawa Campus. They are on the menu for a limited time as “Beniharuka no Yakiimo” and cost 70 yen. They have received comments on SNS, such as "It was sweet and tasty. I wish I could buy more”.
The supervisor of the project, professor Shuntaro Yamazaki, said that the sweet potatoes are maturing and the sugar content is increasing.
Raw sweet potatoes are also sold at Sena Roadside Station and at Y Shop Acqua convenience store on the Kanazawa campus. At Acqua, they are so popular that they are gone as soon as they are put on the shelves.

Kosen Beniya Soft - The First Collaboration Product

As a new initiative of the Kosen Beniharuka Project, two products were developed and sold in rapid succession this year. The first product was a collaboration with Soba Yamaneko and Kijitora Coffee Laboratory located in front of the Hakusanroku Campus. This was a jointly developed soft serve ice cream using baked Kosen Beneharuka sweet potatoes. The product is now available at Soba Yamaneko and Kijitora Coffee Laboratory for a limited time, which started on Sunday, October 30th.
The “Chips Benya Soft” with Kosen Beniharuka chips costs 580 yen, and the “Kosen Benya Soft” without toppings is 500 yen. Small chunks of baked sweet potato are mixed into the soft serve ice cream, making it sticky, with a smooth, gentle sweetness.
The "Mont Blanc Benya Soft" is also on sale for 850 yen, but only during the hours when there are few customers because it requires a lot of time and effort to make. As the catchphrase “sticky-sweet” suggests, this soft serve ice cream has a delightful taste and texture.

I am afraid this is a personal story, but on the first day that Chips Benya Soft was sold, it was sunny, and I invited my wife to try it. She really enjoyed it. In fact, a month later (November 30th, 2022) she asked for more, saying "Oh, I want to try it again, but is it still available?"
The baked sweet potato I brought home after the photo shoot was so sweet that I wondered how they could be so sweet. The sweetness really surprised me. Beniharuka is the king of sweet potatoes, and as expected, their delicious taste certainly seems to be etched in the memories of those who have eaten them.

Kosen Beniharu Sundae - The Second Collaboration Product

The second product of the Kosen Beniharuka business is the “Kosen Beniharuka Sundae,” a collaboration product with Sena Roadside Station, which was sold there for a limited time from Saturday, November 12th. The price was 400 yen. For this sundae, diced and frozen baked Beniharuka sweet potatoes are put on top of brown rice flakes and topped with vanilla soft serve ice cream and black sesame seeds. This created a dish that offers the sweetness of Beniharuka and the crunchy texture of brown rice flakes.
The students also created the signs displayed in the storefront for both the first and second versions of this product.

If abandoned land is left as it is, nothing will come of it. The Beniharuka grown by the students on this land became a high value-added product that people want to try again, whether as a baked potato or in sweets. It also brought new business opportunities for the stakeholders who we collaborated with. The students were able to show that they could do something that even adults have difficulty doing. I think this is a great accomplishment.

Developing Beautiful Original Products Using the Asagimadara (Chestnut Tiger Butterfly) as a Motif
2nd Year Agribusiness Group's Butterfly Business

Hello! My name is Hideo Shitaka, and I am in charge of Public Relations for ICT.
After nearly 20 years being in charge of public relations at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, I have been working on public relations activities for ICT for the past three years. As a job, this is quite interesting. I often take photos as a hobby and for practical use. Last September, I went to take photos of the Beniharuka sweet potato field in front of the Hakusanroku campus. This is where 2nd year students were working as part of their Engineering Design class. While taking photos, I noticed many beautiful butterflies flying among the plants near the field. That was my first encounter with an Asagimadara (chestnut tiger butterfly).

In July of this year, professor Shuntaro Yamazaki called me to say that the 2nd year Agribusiness Group had launched a new Asagimadara Project in addition to the Kosen Beniharuka project. Last year, the Hakusanroku Mountain Village Revitalization Council, a group of local residents, planted Fujibakama (Fragrant Eupatorium) on abandoned farmland adjacent to the Sena Roadside Station to create the "Asagimadara Sky Station Hakusan". While Sena is a place for people to rest from early summer to fall, this sky station will become a place for Asagimadara to rest as well. The 2nd year Agribusiness Group from ICT was also taking on the challenge of developing a new business that focuses on the ability of the Asagimadara to attract visitors.

One of ICT's characteristics is that we believe that solutions do not end with ideas. Students also need to focus on the process of materializing and testing ideas. For the Asagimadara project, students made a presentation on their project to the Hakusanroku Mountain Village Revitalization Council about opening a stall of original products, which they were able to do during the Asagimadara Marking Event on Friday, September 23rd, which is a national holiday. Last year, this experience was only a one-day Asagimadara Marking Event. This year it was expanded to include the sale of original Asagimadara products and efforts to identify HAKUSANROKU (Foothills of Mt. Hakusan) as a sanctuary for Asagimadara.

Agribusiness group members designed and built chopstick rests, key chains, and coasters using the skills acquired in Computer Skills lessons and the school laser cutter in the Maker Studio. Students also created the packaging for these products. The products were beautiful and delicate. They did a really good job.

Unfortunately, the weather on Friday, September 23rd, a national holiday was rainy from the morning, but many families took part. ICT's stall was crowded with visitors. After the festival, the products were sold at Sena Roadside Station until Saturday, October 1st.
They were also sold in the Campus Goods Corner at the entrance of the Book Center on the second floor of Building 21 on the Kanazawa Campus of ICT. They were on display at the ICT School Tour held on Sunday, November 6th, attracting much attention from the participants.

There are many stretches of abandoned farmlands in front of the Hakusanroku Campus. However, with the cooperation of local residents, the students were able to create awareness of the Asagimadara Project.

Hello, this is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office.
On Saturday, November 12th, a sports festival was held at the Kanazawa Campus gymnasium. 1st and 2nd students from Hakusanroku campus and 4th and 5th students from Kanazawa campus joined together to take part in the event.

Since it was an opportunity for students from both campuses to get together, a send-off ceremony was held for the ICT A team which participated in the national ROBOCON competition held on Sunday, November 27th. This ceremony was followed by three sports: basketball, badminton, and volleyball, in that order. The students were divided into 4 teams with team members drawn from all 4 grades. Then, the teams selected students to play each of the three sports to play against the other 3 teams.  The winning team for each sport then played against a team of faculty members. All of the competitions were very exciting, with spectacular games and loud cheers from the audience! After the competition, each of the four teams received an assortment of sweets as a participation prize.

The event provided an opportunity for students to take a break from their daily studies and join forces with their friends. At the same time, students had a chance to deepened friendships between the two campuses through mixed-grade team activities.
