August 21, 2019 ICT Summer School

Hello, it's Jonathan the camera man. I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. During August 8 (Thu) - 10 (Sat), we held our annual Summer School at Hakusanroku campus. The ICT Summer School is a three day program in which junior high school students come to ICT and experience our school. They stay in the dormitories and eat meals at the cafeteria just like ICT students. Also, the teachers organized a program to experience ICT's engineering education. The 35 participants were divided into six groups with two to three ICT student advisers. Their mission was to design a new experience that will draw tourist to the Hakusanroku area. During the three days they must create three things: a souvenir prototype, a video, and a poster presentation introducing their idea.

Day 1

On the first day, the 35 participants gathered at Hakusanroku campus. After lunch we started with self-introductions and an orientation activity. Each group was given a paper with pictures of locations inside the campus. A secret envelope with stickers inside was hidden at each location and gathering all stickers would reveal a riddle for the groups to solve. We also took a trip to the Michi-no-eki Sena across from ICT. Sena acts as a rest stop for tourist and sells local goods and souvenirs. Participants used this time to inspecting the souvenirs on sale and gather information about the Hakusanroku area from traveling brochures. This information was used to decide the focus for their project later.

In the evening, Maesa-sensei taught the students how to fly drones. These drones would be used to gather video footage of Hakusanroku's beautiful nature at the river on the following day. After learning how to control the drones, each group went outside to take turns practicing. The drones are controlled using a tablet controller and can preform several programmed movements such as flying or landing on you hand. Students were excited to fly the drones and you can see them in the video below. 

Day 2

Day two was the only full day of the program, and a packed one as well. After breakfast we departed for Chugu Nature Conservation Center where students learned about the Nature of Mt. Hakusan by watching a video about the four season, listening to a lecture by local nature specialist Shinichi Hiramatsu, viewing the displays within the conservation center, and taking a short hike into the forest. Next, we moved to a nearby river to enjoy the cool water and take videos with the drones. 

After returning to ICT, participants broke up into two group to work on their video editing and souvenir prototypes. Maesa-sensei explained how to edit videos using Windows Movie Maker while KK-sensei took charge of the rapid prototyping of the souvenirs. Students brainstormed and designed ideas until they decided on one, which they brought to KK-sensei. Prototypes of their ideas were then created in the maker studio using machines such as the laser cutter. After dinner, we returned to finally work on the presentations and posters. ICT student advisers helped the participants generate and organize their ideas using design thinking. Many groups worked late into the night to complete their poster, video, and presentation.

Day 3

The presentations took place on the morning of the third day. Each group introduced their video, idea, and souvenir in English. You can view their presentations in the videos below. Later, there was a poster session where teachers and parents could view the posters and ask questions. Finally, we held our closing ceremony. President Lewis Barksdale congratulated each student and presented them with a certificate for their fine work. Students had lunch together one last time before departing from ICT.

The 35 participants worked hard and the ICT student advisers also learned a lot from taking on the role of teaching them these three days. I am looking forward to seeing our participants in the near future.

こんにちは、ジョナサンです。皆さま良い夏休みをお過しでしょうか。8月8日（木）～10日（土）ICTサマースクールが白山麓キャンパスで開催されました。ICTサマースクールは国内外の中学生が実際に国際高専の学生寮に寝泊まりしながら学校生活を体験できる3日間のプログラムです。また、国際高専のエンジニアリングデザイン教育を体験してもらうために先生方による課題も用意されました。35名の参加者たちは6つのグループに分けられ、各グループに2～3名のICT生の学生アドバイザーが就きました。用意された課題は白山麓に観光客を誘致するようなアイデアをデザインすること。そのためにオリジナルのお土産のプロトタイプ、自分たちで撮影編集した動画、プレゼンテーションのためのポスターの3つを作ります。

１日目

初日は35名の参加者が白山麓キャンパスに集まったあと、自己紹介とオリエンテーションのゲームを行いました。キャンパス内の16か所に封筒が隠され、各グループはヒントを元に探し出して封筒の中にあるシールを紙に貼ります。全て集めるとクイズの問題文が完成する仕組みです。また、白山麓の地域について知るために道の駅「瀬女」に移動して、売られているお土産や置かれているパンフレットから情報収集を行いました。これらの情報はプロジェクトのテーマを決めるための参考にしました。

夕方からはメイサ先生によるドローン飛行練習を行いました。課題のひとつである動画はドローンで撮影した映像を使って作ることになります。ドローンの操縦方法を習ったあと、外へ出て順番に練習をしました。このドローンはタブレット型のコントローラーを使用し、手のひらから離陸・着陸するなど様々なプログラムが組み込まれています。生徒たちはドローン飛行を楽しんでいる様子で、その姿は上の動画で見ることができます。

２日目

2日目は朝から晩まで充実した一日となりました。朝食のあと、さっそく白山自然保護センター中宮展示館へ向けて出発しました。ここでは四季に関するビデオ、自然に詳しい平松新一さんの講話、展示館内の見学、軽いハイキングを通じて白山の自然について学びました。また、その後は隣接する蛇谷川へ移動して、冷たい川の水を楽しんだり、ドローンを飛ばして撮影したりしました。

国際高専へ戻ったあとはビデオ編集とオリジナルのお土産のデザインに取り掛かりました。メイサ先生がWindows Movie Makerを使った動画編集を教え、KK先生がお土産のプロトタイプ制作を指導しました。各グループはブレインストーミングなどを使ってデザインしたいアイデアを選出し、KK先生に提出しました。これらのアイデアのプロトタイプはメーカースタジオにあるレーザーカッターなどの機械を使用して作られました。夕食後はいよいよプレゼンテーションとポスター制作が始まりました。学生アドバイザーはデザインシンキングの手法などの指導を行い、アイデアをまとめる手助けをしました。各グループは熱心に取り組み、活動は夜遅くまで続きました。

３日目

プレゼンテーションは3日目の午前中に行われました。各グループは制作したビデオ、デザインしたアイデア、お土産のプロトタイプを英語で紹介しました。それぞれのプレゼンテーションは下の動画で視聴することができます。発表後はポスターセッションがあり、訪れた保護者や先生がポスターを見たり、質問したりしました。その後は修了式が行われ、ルイス・バークスデール校長が参加者ひとりひとりにその成果を賞して修了証書を手渡しました。最後に皆で昼食をとったあと、白山麓キャンパスをあとにしました。

プログラムを観察していて、参加者たちは2泊3日という短い間にも関わらず、非常に熱心に活動に取り組んだと感じました。また、学生アドバイザーとして参加したICT生も今回はデザインシンキングを教える立場として、両方にとって学びの多い3日間となったと思います。今回の参加者たちと再び会える日を楽しみにしています。

July 29, 2019 ICT Global Summer Camp

Hello, it's Jonathan, the camera man. Today I would like to give my report on the ICT Global Summer Camp. From July 21-24, six Thai students and 21 Japanese students gathered at Hakusanroku campus for a four day workshop. This Global Summer Camp is actually the collaboration of two separate groups: the International summer camp of Thai students and the summer workshop of Japanese students from JOES (Japan Overseas Educational Services.) The 27 participants, which mostly consisted of middle school students, used design thinking to study the history and wildlife of the local Hakusanroku area and design a new attraction for tourists. Students learned how to use drones, laser cutters, and video editing to document and create a presentation of the various places and activities they experienced during the program.

The six Thai students arrived a couple of days before the program. On July 20 (SAT) we took a trip to Kanazawa. First, we visited President Lewis Barksdale at the ICT Kanazawa campus. Then, we took a tour of the facilities of Kanazawa Institute of Technology's (KIT) Library Center and Yume Kobo. At KIT's library, we viewed the special assortment of rare books written by historical scientists and the PMC (Popular Music Collection), a collection of 250,000 music records. In the afternoon we moved to Kanazawa city to do some sightseeing at Higashi-chaya-gai (east tea house district), Kanazawa castle, Kenrokuen garden, and the 21st century museum. The Thai students took a gold leaf crafting course at Sakuda Gold Leaf Crafts and experienced many forms of Japanese culture for the first time.

The Global Summer Camp officially began with the arrival of the JOES students on Sunday. The next day, we departed from ICT to explore the wildlife of Hakusanroku. After viewing the Fukube waterfall on the Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road, we moved to the Chugu Nature Preservation Center to listened to the lecture of Mr. Shinichi Hiramatsu, an expert of the wildlife of Mt. Hakusan. Mr. Hiramatsu explained about the four seasons and animals of Mt. Hakusan and showed a assortment of living reptiles and insects. Chugu Nature Preservation Center has many displays including bears, serows, monkeys, and the rare Golden Eagle. Students took pictures and videos to use later in their presentation. Next, we moved to the Jyatani river near the preservation center to test our drone flying skills. Students learned how to control drones on the previous evening, and practiced flying and video recording the beautiful scenery.

For the presentations, students worked in six groups. Each group designed a new attraction for the Hakusanroku area and created a poster presentation to suggest to Hakusan city. They also created a prototype souvenir using laser cutting, and a video to introduce what they learned and experienced during the program. Students worked hard throughout the program and the presentations took place on the morning of the final day. Parents, teachers, and members of the community gathered at Hakusanroku campus to watch their presentations, which you can view in the videos below. Afterwards, there was a poster session where viewers could walk around and ask questions to each group about their propositions and souvenirs. Finally, we held a closing and graduation ceremony. Satoshi Minami, promotional director of Hakusan city commented that he was surprised how thoroughly the students has researched the many aspects of Hakusanroku and that their insights were innovative and will be considered as a method to revitalize the area. Toji Makita spoke on behalf of the participating students saying that he truly appreciated the staff for providing this wonderful opportunity for them all. Students enjoyed one last lunch together at the cafeteria before departing from ICT.

This was my second time assisting the JOES summer program (you can read last year's article here) and I am happy with this year's results. Each group was remarkably organized and well prepared for their presentations. There were no last minute scrabbling or working after-hours. Each member of every group simply did a great job. I have a suspicion that this was partially due to how the facilitators assigned one Thai students to each group. The JOES students have lived abroad and are fluent in both English and Japanese. However, having one Thai student in each group encouraged them to use English during the program. I believe this helped them focus and improve their overall performance. It also added to the experience of working in a team of divers people with different backgrounds.

There were six students who returned to take this program for the second time and I hope everyone enjoyed the program enough that I can see many of them again next year. Your experience here using design thinking and working with your team to create something has grown you as future innovators of our world. Whether we meet again or not, I wish you the best of luck!

こんにちは、ジョナサンです。今日は7月21日～24日に行われたICTグローバルサマーキャンプの報告をしたいと思います。6名のタイの小中学生と、21名の日本の小中学生が白山麓キャンパスで4日間のワークショップに挑戦しました。このグローバルサマーキャンプはタイのインターナショナルサマーキャンプと、海外子女教育振興財団（JOES）のサマーワークショップの２つの団体の合同で行われました。主に中学生で構成された計27名の参加者は地元白山麓の歴史や自然を体験し、デザインシンキングを使って観光客を呼び寄せる新事業をチームで考案しました。プログラムではドローン操縦、レーザーカッター、動画編集などを学び、これらを使用して自分たちの体験の紹介や事業の提案を行うプレゼンテーションを作成しました。

タイの生徒たちはプログラムの数日前に来日し、20日（土）は金沢へに出かけました。まずは国際高専の金沢キャンパスでルイス・バークスデール校長と面会して、その後金沢工業大学のライブラリーセンターと夢考房を訪問しました。ライブラリーセンターでは歴史的な科学者の貴重な原書のコレクション「工学の曙文庫」と25万枚以上のレコードを所蔵するPMC（ポピュラー・ミュージック・コレクション）を見学しました。午後は金沢市のひがし茶屋街、金沢城、兼六園、21世紀美術館を観光しました。ひがし茶屋街の金箔屋さくだでは金箔貼り体験に挑戦するなど、様々な異文化体験をしました。

プレゼンテーションは6つのグループで行われました。各グループは白山麓に観光客を惹きつける新しい事業をデザインし、実際に白山市に提案するためにポスターを制作しました。さらに、レーザーカッターを使ったオリジナルのお土産のプロトタイプと、プログラムで体験した内容をまとめた動画を作りました。メンバーは連日準備に取り組み、最終日24日（水）の午前中に発表が行われました。発表を見るためにたくさんの保護者、先生、地元白山市の方々が集まりました。各グループの発表は上の動画で視聴することができます。発表のあとはポスターセッションがあり、見学者が歩き回りながら自由に質問ができる時間が設けられました。最後に閉会式と卒業式が執り行われ、白山市観光文化スポーツ部観光課 宣伝係主事の南智史さんは「非常によく白山の歴史や自然について調べていて驚いた。地域活性のための貴重なアイデアがたくさんあった」とコメントしました。また、参加者代表として牧田登治さん（中2）が「この機会を用意してくださった関係者にとても感謝しています」と挨拶しました。生徒たちは昼食をカフェテリアで食べたあと、それぞれ家路へとつきました。

私がこのJOESサマープログラムに参加するのは今回が2回目でしたが（去年の記事）、今年も良い4日間になったと思います。特に今年は各グループが計画的で、プレゼンテーション準備がスムーズでした。どのグループも役割分担がしっかりなされ、時間に余裕を残して準備が完了しました。ひとつの要因は各グループにタイの生徒をひとり配分したことだと思います。JOESの生徒は海外生活などで英語と日本語の両方を話せますが、タイの生徒を加えることによって英語を話す必要性が出てきました。これによって集中力が向上して良い結果につながったのではないかと推察しています。様々な文化の人間とチーム活動する経験も得られたので、とても良い変更だったと思います。

今回参加した生徒のうち、6名が去年からのリピーターでした。今年の参加者もまた来年来たくなるような楽しい日々を過ごしたなら幸いに思います。君たちがここで経験したデザインシンキングやチームで何かを作り上げる体験はきっと将来のイノベーターとして役に立ちます。再び会える日を信じて、幸運を祈っています。

Hello everyone! It has been a long time since my last entry in winter. Since then, the first school year of this new mountainside campus has ended and the second one has begun. Second year students are entering the final stretch of their time here at Hakusanroku campus and the new first year students seem to already be getting used to life here. Students have been able to join different clubs since last April and they seem to be enjoying them very much. The clubs offer a welcome break from classes and studying.

For this summer vacation, I am in charge of the second year students’ STEM-related summer homework. Students will have to choose a scientific news article related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics and write a journal including a summary about the article and their thoughts and opinions on it. They will also have to make a presentation about the article when they come back from summer vacation. Students can choose an article of their liking and get it approved by a teacher or they can also choose from a selection of articles that has been provided by science teachers. The topics include the physics of black holes, the discovery of exoplanets, the uses of carbon nanotubes, renewable sources of energy and many more! I am looking forward to reading their journals and seeing their presentations! I will be sure to update you in the next entry.

皆さん、こんにちは！去年の冬の最後の投稿からずいぶん経ってしまいました。あれからこの白山麓キャンパスでは一年が終わり、また新しい学年が始まりました。2年生は白山麓で過ごす最後の年となり、入学した新入生はここでの生活に慣れたようです。新しいクラブにも参加できるようになって、学生たちはクラブ活動を楽しんでいるようです。授業や課題の良い息抜きになるのでしょう。

今年は、私が夏季休暇のＳＴＥＭ関連の宿題を担当することになりました。学生たちは科学、技術、工学、数学のいずれかに関連するニュース記事を選んで、その記事の要約や感想を書いたジャーナルを提出します。また、学校へ戻ってきてからはその記事についてのプレゼンテーションも行います。学生は先生の認可をもらって関心のある記事を選んでもいいですし、理科目の先生によって用意された記事から選ぶこともできます。記事のテーマはブラックホールの物理、太陽系外惑星の発見、カーボンナノチューブの使用用途、再利用可能なエネルギー源など、たくさん用意しました！彼らのジャーナルを読んでプレゼンテーションを見るのが楽しみです。内容については次のジャーナルに書きたいと思います。

Hi, this is Maesa again. Lucky for me I was able to find some time to give you guys an update. The last few weeks, and the next few weeks, have been busy but also very exciting. ICT has started up their Summer Camp programs, starting with a Global Summer Camp with students mainly from Thailand and a couple of Japanese students living aboard.

The project goal was to create a promotional video to help the local community attract more tourists. We had 4 teams create amazing videos with each team highlighting a topic based on their focus area. As a technical school, ICT helps introduce students to different technologies. We started with using drones indoor with picture banners of the local area to help students hone their piloting skills to take pictures from afar safely. ICT also had the students experiment with gimbals with their smartphones to help stabilize hand shot, closeup videos. With all the video clips collected, the students used Windows Movie Maker on Microsoft Surface Pros to edit and finalized their videos.

All the videos turned out well, and I cannot wait to see what the next Summer Camp group will create.

やあ、メイサだよ。運よくジャーナルを書く時間が見つかったので、近況報告していきます。今月は忙しくもワクワクするような出来事があります。国際高専ではサマーキャンプ・プログラムがスタートし、まず初めに主にタイの生徒と海外在住の日本人数人を含んだグローバルサマーキャンプが開催されました。

このプロジェクトの目標は国際高専周辺の地域に観光客を呼び寄せるプロモーションビデオの制作でした。４つのチームがそれぞれ決めたテーマについて素晴らしいビデオを作ってくれました。ICTが高専であるおかげで生徒たちに様々な機材を提供することができました。ドローンの操縦訓練として、安全に距離を保って撮影飛行できるよう周辺地域の写真のバナーを使って屋内で練習をしました。また、ジンバルを使ってスマホの動画撮影の手振れを抑える体験もしました。動画を撮影したあとはマイクロソフトSurface ProでWindowsムービーメーカーを使って編集を行いました。

 どのチームのビデオも見事で、次のサマーキャンプグループがどんな動画を作るのかいまから楽しみです。

My journal entry for this year would have to be about the running that has been going on in campus. Both in the class and in the mornings. 3 laps. 2km. once a week at the start of class and 3 times before school not obligatory. As rewarding as it has been for the whole class to get better from consistency; the real joy for me has been getting outside in the mornings.

A lot of my personal life has become either inside a room or car, or near a screen. So to have a regular habit of bursting outside; the best being on a beautiful spring morning with flowers blooming and the sun, warm yet not hot, yelling at the world for how huge and exciting the world is – to large droplets of rain dousing me right down to the skin; thudding footsteps of water-logged shoes, and no company from the students. I still enjoy those wet 2kms though; there is truth to the saying ‘you can be cold, wet, and miserable, or just cold and wet’. It’s all in the mind.

The mornings run give me a good time to take the 2km at my own pace and have a small chat with Ian while I run, or encourage the students/others who join. At the end I always feel much better than when I started, and because it’s not that long, the run adds more energy to my day than it takes.

The students who come regularly show a great deal of grit, determination, and self-motivation. I do applaud the other students who choose to sleep, when they have stayed up so late. Yet I think that their situation would be far improved if they were able to get a good amount of sleep and come to running in the mornings.

It is my hope that the morning runs will become a habit, then tradition. I have hopes that maybe even a yearly race could happen. Encouraging the students to take their health into their own hands and away from the screens and chairs so often.

As for Ian, myself, and anyone who has joined; there is a joy of seizing the day together, and it has brightened up my spring by no small amount.

今回の白山麓ジャーナルのテーマは校内ランニングです。体育の授業と早朝の両方。キャンパスを3周。2キロの距離。体育の始めと週に3回で参加は自由です。体力づくりの目的もありますが、個人的には早朝に外へ出るのが1番のご褒美です。

最近はプライベートの時間を部屋か車内、あるいは画面の前で過ごすことが多くなりました。ですので、外へ駆け出して輝く春の朝を、咲き乱れる花々と心地よい日差しの中、果てしなく広くエキサイティングな世界に向かって声を上げる。大粒の雨が全身を濡らし、雨水で重くなった靴が地面を打ち付ける、学生がおらずたった一人で走ったあの日が最高に生きた心地がしました。ずぶ濡れになりましたが、この2キロは楽しかったです。「寒くて濡れていて惨めなこともあれば、寒くて濡れているだけなこともある」とはよく言ったものです。全ては捉え方次第なのです。

早朝ランニングは自分のペースで走る余裕があり、イアン先生と小話をするか、参加した学生に声をかけることができます。走り終わるといつもスタートした時より気分はよくなっていて、それほど長い距離ではないので疲れより、得るエネルギーのほうが大きいです。

頻繁に参加する学生は強い根性、意思、自発性を見せてくれます。参加するより前日の夜遅くまで頑張ったから睡眠を選択する学生の努力を否定はしませんが、しっかり睡眠をとって早朝ランニングしたほうが捗ると思います。

今後、この早朝ランニングが習慣化し、さらには学校の伝統になることを願っています。できれば年に1度校内大会を開催できたら良いとも思っています。ぜひ学生には座って画面ばかり見るより、自発的に自身の健康を気遣って欲しいです。

その間、イアン先生と私、参加した学生たちは魂を呼び覚まして、その日を手中に収める喜びを楽しもうと思います。

July 4, 2019 祝！高専プロコン予選突破！

こんにちは、デザイン＆ファブリケーションクラブの副顧問の伊藤です。今日は国際高専の全国高等専門学校プログラミングコンテスト参加について報告します（タイトルで盛大にネタバレしてますが）。全国高等専門学校プログラミングコンテスト（以下、高専プロコン）は全国の高専が参加するプログラムと、ICT作品のコンテストです。課題部門、自由部門、競技部門に分かれており、それぞれのテーマに沿って審査が行われます。今年度は白山麓キャンパスのデザイン＆ファブリケーションクラブから課題部門と競技部門にそれぞれ１チームずつ参加しました。課題部門のテーマは昨年と同じく「ICTを活用した地域活性化」で、競技部門は「踊って舞って回って」という囲碁のような陣取りゲームが種目です。１０月に都城高専で行われる本戦に参加するためには、予選の書類審査を突破しなければなりません。特に課題部門は例年６０弱の応募に対して２０チームしか通れない狭き門です。競技部門でも書類審査があります。その予選を何と、両部門で突破することができたのです。

課題部門チームは本丸さん（S2）、井上くん（S1）、塩谷くん（S1）、杉くん（S1）、田中くん（S1）の５名、競技部門チームは勝又くん（S2）、青木くん（S2）、深山くん（S2）の３名です。２年生と１年生だけのチームで上級生がメインの他の高専と渡り合うことは難しいかな、と当初は考えていたのですが、本当に一所懸命に頑張ってくれたので想像以上の結果を出してくれました。夜11時くらいまで残って資料作成している日が続いた時は、本当に間に合うのか？と思ってしまうこともありましたが、その努力が報われました。本当におめでとう、と言いたいです。ただ、本戦はこれからです。今一度気を引き締めて、本戦に向けて作品の完成度を上げていってほしいと思います。頑張れ！

私は高専生であるうちに何かしらの全力を出せる体験を学生にさせてあげたいと考えています。勉強であれ、スポーツであれ、趣味の活動であれ、全力を尽くすことが現在の自分の限界と、さらには伸びしろがわかると考えているからです。高専プロコンや全国高専ロボコンなどのコンテストはそのわかりやすい一例です。例え全力を出し尽くしても、敗けてしまう事もあります。ですが、全力を出した事、その経験が大事なのです。そして、学生達には全国の高専の高いレベルを肌で感じてほしいと思います。

最後に、資料作成の際に様々なアドバイスを頂いたり、遅くまで残って学生の活動をサポートして頂いた、デザイン＆ファブリケーションクラブの顧問の伊勢先生や金沢キャンパスの藤澤先生、田村先生にもこの場を借りてお礼申し上げます。

Hello. It's Ito, deputy coach of the Design & Fabrication club. Today I would like to announce that ICT has qualified for the National Kosen Programming Contest! The National Kosen Programming Contest (Kosen Procon) is a program in which Kosen schools (technical collages) participate and compete using information and communication technology. The contest is divided into three sections: the challenge section, free section, and competitive section. Each section is judged based on its individual theme. This year, two teams from the Hakusanroku campus Design & Fabrication club entered the challenge section and competitive section. The challenge section's theme is the same as last year: "regional revitalization using information and communication technology." In the competitive section, teams will compete at an original game called "Dance, dance, and twirl" similar to the territory capturing board game Igo. To participate in the national competition in October at Miyakonojo College, we first had to pass the document elimination stage. The challenge section is especially difficult because there are over 60 entries every year with only 20 seats available. Despite this, ICT was able to advance to the nationals in both sections!

The challenge section team consists of five students, Honmaru (S2), Inoue (S1), Shioya (S1), Sugi (S1), and Tanaka (S1) and the competitive team consists of the three students, Katsumata (S2), Aoki (S2), and Miyama (S2). At first I was worried that our challenge section team, which is mostly made up of first-year students, would struggle to compete against other teams that commonly consist of older students. However, they have put a lot of effort into the preparation and exceeded my expectations with their results. There were some days spent creating documents until 11 pm and I was sometime afraid we would not finish on time, but thankfully their efforts were came through. I express my congratulations to them. However, the true battle is yet to come. The team's next goal is to focus once more and finish the final product until the competition. Good luck!

My role, is to provide students an opportunity to try their hardest at something while they are students here. Whether that be academics, sports, or a hobby, I believe challenging yourself to the limit helps you understand your limits and find room for expanding them. The Kosen Procon or National Kosen Robocon tournaments are good examples. You can try your hardest and still lose. However, it's the experience of trying your hardest that is most important. It's also an opportunity for students to see the high level work of other Kosen schools.

Lastly, I would like to thank Ise sensei, the head coach of the Design & Fabrication club, and Fujisawa sensei and Tamura sensei of Kanazawa campus for providing us with advice for the documents and staying after hours to support the students.

“Technology increases at an exponential rate” was, at first, a phrase used to describe the accelerating improvement of computer transistor technology in the 20^th century. However, it has come to be a theme for many different technologies in the Digital Age. From horse driven carriages to self-driving cars or from room-sized computers to smartphones that fit in a pocket, simple useful technologies quickly grow into amazing inventions that surpass even the wildest of dreams. These technological marvels can only be made possible through the hard work of scientists, engineers, and innovators with creativity and imagination.

At ICT, the students develop their creativity and imagination by experimenting with some of the innovative devices that school has to offer. Students are challenged to create unique designs and contraptions in their classes, and are able to meet those challenges by utilizing the 3D printers, laser cutters, and the other devices that the school provides.

The newest tool for the students to utilize are small-but-powerful drones, capable of being easily controlled through a smartphone app and able to record both photo and video. The participants of one of ICT’s summer programs had a great time learning about drone technology and exploring their countless possibilities, but it’s not all fun and games! Soon, the 2^nd year Computer Skills students will be faced with the daunting task of programming the drones to automatically perform search-and-rescue missions. Hopefully the students can use their knowledge and imagination to tackle this problem and grow as future global innovators.

「テクノロジーは指数関数的に進歩している」は、コンピューターの半導体技術を指すフレーズとして20世紀に使われ始めました。しかし、現在のデジタル時代では、様々なテクノロジーに広く使われるようになっています。馬車から自動運転する自動車、部屋の大きさのコンピューターからポケットに収まるスマートフォン、シンプルで使いやすいテクノロジーは目覚ましい進化を遂げ、私たちの想像を大きく超えていきます。これらは科学者、エンジニア、発明家の大変な努力と想像力があって初めて実現しました。

国際高専では学校の様々な設備を使ってイノベーション創出をしてもらい、学生の想像力を伸ばしています。授業ではユニークなデザインや装置を作る課題が出されます。学生たちは3Dプリンターやレーザーカッター等、学校に設置されているデバイスを利用してこれらの課題を達成します。

最近導入された新しいツールが、小型ながらパワフルなドローンです。これはスマホのアプリで簡単に操縦ができ、写真と動画の両方が撮影可能です。サマープログラムに参加した生徒たちはドローン技術がもたらす無限の可能性を大いに楽しみながら学んでいました。しかし、国際高専の学生に用意された課題は楽しい遊びばかりではありません。まもなく2年のコンピュータースキルズの授業では、プログラミングを使ってドローンに自動で探索およびレスキューミッションを行わせる難関課題が課せされます。学生たちがこれまでの知識と想像力を使ってこの課題を乗り越え、未来のグローバルイノベーターに一歩近づくことを願っています。

Hey, it's Jonathan. Here is another report from Hakusanroku campus. On June 22 Saturday, the first and second year students had a special field trip to discover and learn more about the nature and history of the Hakusanroku area. We visited Ichinose Visitor Center to hike and learn about the wildlife of Mt. Hakusan, and explored Shiramine village and visited Rinsaiji Temple to learn about the history of the area. After dinner, the Nature & Adventure club joined a local event to go see fireflies. It was a jam-packed day, here at Hakusanroku.

Ichinose Visitor Center is the starting point for those climbing Mt. Hakusan from the Shiramine area. There are some hiking courses, displays of wildlife, an onsen ryokan, and a camping area next to the nearby river. Here we took a short hike into the mountains which lead to a vantage point where you can see Mt. Hakusan. Our guide, Mr. Shinichi Hiramatsu is an expert of the nature of this area, and pointed out various plants and insects as we hiked. It was drizzling slightly. However, we were happily surprised to find Mt. Hakusan beautifully visible from the vantage point.

After the hike, we returned to the visitor center to learn about the wildlife and history of Ichinose. Mr. Hiramatsu explained that Ichinose used to be a bustling town, famous for its many onsen baths and people climbing Mt. Hakusan. However, in 1934 a devastating flood hit Ichinose, destroying everything. This flood was due that year's heavy snowfall melting, and there is even a legend that to this day a thousand snakes are trapped under the eternal snow covering one of the lakes on top of Mt. Hakusan and a flood will occur again if the eternal snow ever thaws. Mr. Hiramatsu also showed many plants and animals of Mt. Hakusan, including how to distinguish plants and trees apart, videos of bears, wild boars, monkeys, antelopes, and gold eagles, and live lizards and insects he brought to the center. On the way to Shiramine, we stopped at the "Million Kan Rock." (1 Kan = 3.75kg) This huge rock was pushed 3 km down the river during the historical flood and stands as a landmark as a testament of its shear power.

In the afternoon, we moved to Shiramine village to investigate and learn about the area. Shiramine serves as a hub for people climbing Mt. Hakusan and has many historic and sightseeing-worthy locations. First, students explored the area on foot. Many students decided to visit the popular Snowman Cafe for some dessert. Fully refreshed, we next visited Rinsaiji temple to listen to the history of Mt. Hakusan and view the many Buddha statues displayed there. Mt. Hakusan was always a focus of worship and these statues used to exist on the mountain peak until the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism policy was deployed in 1863. At this time, many Buddha statues were brought down from the mountain to avoid being destroyed and eight such statues are on display here.

Later in the evening, there was an bonus event. Members of the Nature & Adventure club participated in a local event to see fireflies. This is an annual event held by the Oguchi Community Center. The ICT students and members of the local community traveled to the Dainichigawa river in Torigoe, which is about 15 minutes from the Hakusanroku campus by car. There were a surprising number of fireflies and the participants spent time taking pictures, catching, and simply observing a beautiful sight. Mr. Nakamura, a local and expert of fireflies, gave lectures on the insects and answered the students' questions. Some ICT students made friends with the local elementary school kids and everyone enjoyed a pleasant evening.

June 22 was a long and eventful day. Students learned much about the nature and history of the Hakusanroku area while also having a lot of fun. This is not our first time joining a local event or visiting a local sight of interest and I am continuously convinced that our location is crucial to becoming part of the local community; in addition to the convenience of being close and the ability to participate in such events at night thanks to our dormitories. I hope students had fun and found something of interest in the local area, which will help them create innovation in the future.

ジョナサンです。白山麓キャンパスからレポートをお届けします。6月22日（土）1～2年の学生が白山麓の自然や歴史について学ぶ特別活動を行いました。自然については市ノ瀬ビジターセンター、歴史については白峰村と林西寺をそれぞれ訪れ、地域についての理解を深めました。夕食後にはNature & Adventureクラブのメンバーが地元のホタル観察会に参加し、充実した一日を過ごしました。

市ノ瀬ビジターセンターは白峰側の白山登山口として位置しており、ハイキングコース、キャンプ場、様々な展示物などがあり、白山温泉の永井旅館が隣接しています。ここではまず1時間ほどのハイキングを行いました。ガイドを務めた平松新一さんはこの地域の自然のエキスパートで、道中にある様々な植物や動物について解説をしました。小雨が降っていましたが、到着した見晴らし台から白山を望むことができました。

ハイキングの後、ビジターセンターに戻って市ノ瀬の自然や歴史について平松さんから講話を受けました。市ノ瀬は以前は登山客が立ち寄る賑やかな温泉街でしたが、1934年（昭和9年）7月11日の大洪水によって壊滅的な被害を受けて無くなりました。洪水は前の年の大雪と豪雨が重なったことが原因でした。現在も白山頂上の湖を覆う万年雪の下には千匹の蛇が封印されており、溶ければ再び洪水が起きるという伝説も残されています。平松さんは講話の中で白山の木や植物の見分け方、熊、イノシシ、猿、カモシカ、イヌワシを捉えた映像、持参したトカゲや昆虫などを学生たちに見せました。市ノ瀬ビジターセンターから白峰に向かう途中、川沿いにある「百万貫の岩」に立ち寄りました。この大岩は大洪水の時に下流へ3キロ押し流されて現在の位置に着いたとされ、洪水の恐ろしさを物語る歴史的価値から石川県の天然記念物に指定されています。

午後は白峰の散策を行いました。白峰は白山の玄関口として観光客が一年中訪れ、観光名所もたくさんあります。多くの学生は有名な雪だるまカフェを訪れ、スイーツや飲み物を味わいました。その後は林西寺を訪問し、白山の歴史や安置されている白山下山仏について話を聞きました。白山は以前より信仰の対象とされ、頂上に仏像がいくつも設置されておりましたが、明治の神仏分離政策による破壊を免れるため白山から下ろされた8体の仏像がこの林西寺に安置されています。

日没後、Nature & Adventureクラブのメンバーは地元のホタル観察会に参加しました。このイベントは毎年尾口公民館によって開催されている恒例行事です。白山麓キャンパスから車で15分くらいの距離にある鳥越の大日川へ移動し、地元の方々と1時間ほどホタルを観察しました。驚くほどたくさんのホタルがおり、学生たちは写真を撮ったり、ホタルを捕まえたり、美しい光景を眺めたりしていました。また、ホタルに詳しい地元の中村さんが生態について解説したり、学生の質問に答えたりしました。地元の小学生と遊ぶICT学生もいて、皆が楽しい時間を過ごしました。

6月22日は長く充実した一日となりました。学生たちも楽しみながら白山麓の自然や歴史について学べたようです。このように地元のイベントに積極的に参加できたり、深く地域に触れる機会が多いところから、白山麓キャンパスが地域の中に存在していることの重要性を再確認しました。加えて、ボーディングスクールで学生寮を備えているおかげでこのような遅い時間のイベントにも参加できるメリットを感じました。学生たちが楽しみながらこの地域に興味を持ち、後のイノベーション創出に繋げる日を楽しみにしています。

As we move into a surprisingly not-so-humid-yet rainy season, the students are continuing their experience of living in Hakusanroku. Many students like to take pictures outdoors, fly drones, skateboard with their friends, eat karaage, and more! The Kijitora Coffee Laboratory has limited edition drinks to welcome the summer: an Amaou Strawberry “Fu-nya-ppucino” and fruit sodas. Everyone here up at Hakusanroku is ready to welcome the summer!

But even as students are enjoying the weather and exploring outdoors, they are still working hard on their studies! In fact, you can often see the students studying together and teaching each other during the evening Learning Sessions. It’s great to see the students learning to cooperate with and support each other.

Next week, the ICT Hakusanroku Campus will be very busy! The ICT Global Summer Camp begins on Monday and our teachers are hard at work preparing to welcome the students and give them a taste of engineering design and innovation. We are also looking forward to a few other camps this year. It will be very lively!

今年の梅雨は驚くほど雨が少なく、不思議とカラッとしています。学生たちは相変わらず元気に白山麓キャンパスライフを送っています。多くの学生は外へ出て、写真を撮ったり、ドローンを飛ばしたり、友達とスケートボードをしたり、から揚げを食べたりして過ごしています。瀬女の道の駅のキジトラコーヒー研究所では、あまおうを使った「ストロベリー・フニャプチーノ」やフルーツソーダ類などの夏季限定のドリンクが次々と発売されています。白山麓では皆が夏を待ち遠しにしているようです。

過ごしやすい気候を楽しみつつ、学生たちは勉学にも励んでいます。夕方のラーニングセッションで学生同士一緒に勉強したり、教え合ったりする光景をよく見かけます。仲間で協力して支え合う姿を見て嬉しくなります。

来週から白山麓キャンパスはとても賑やかになります！月曜日からICTグローバルサマーキャンプが始まるのです。訪問する生徒たちに国際高専のエンジニアリングデザイン教育でイノベーション創出する体験を味わわせようと、先生たちが準備に取り組んでいます。夏にはまた別のキャンプがありますので、とても賑やかになりそうです。

　エンジニアリングデザインⅡを担当している小高です。今回は国際理工学科２年生へのメッセージを投稿したいと思います。

　米大統領であるトランプ氏の訪日について報じられたのは記憶に新しい。トランプ氏に同行したCNNのテレビ記者の第一報では、「Sumo, golf, and barbecue」（相撲とゴルフと炉端焼き）と日米間の懸案はそっちのけで訪日したトランプ大統領を皮肉った【注１】。

　ところで「炉端焼き」とは、日本の田舎屋風の店舗で店員が魚介類や野菜を炭火で焼いた料理を提供する居酒屋の一形態とインターネット上に説明されています。したがって「炉端焼き」を「barbecue」という言葉で報道すると情報が少々不足している感があります。たとえ「a type of Japanese barbecue-style cooking」としても訳しきれません。記者の伝えたかった事は「息抜き訪問として皮肉るため」となれば、この場合、具体的な料理形態はどうでもいいのでしょう。しかしながら私は、「日本語と英語が対を成すには難しいよね〜」と、このニュースを通じ思ったのでした。

　師走の清水寺で行われる「今年の漢字」企画。１年間の出来事を一文字で表現するものです。公募による応募総数の多い漢字が選ばれるということですが、印象深い出来事を漢字で表す事により、人々が一年を振り返り、次の年に新たな心で向かうための区切りにもなります。一文字で事を表現する「漢字って素晴らしいな〜」と改めて思うのです。

　漢字の組見合わせによる同種の言葉は多彩な表現を可能とします。例えば「雨」。春雨、五月雨、梅雨、冷雨、霧雨、時雨、氷雨、村雨、慈雨、雨音、香雨、酒涙雨、漫ろ雨‥•。「雨」を使用しなくても雨を意味する言葉では、天泣、神立、秋霖、鬼洗い、狐の嫁入りなどなど。雨の呼び名だけでも４００以上あるそうです。そこには漢字自体が意味を秘め、情景、状態など日本人が五感で感じる文化的自然観を表現します。漢字を用いた単語は、臭いや、色、音、感情、季節の表現も可能とし、更には、瞬時にこれらを理解可能とするサイン性を持っています。つまり視覚伝達力にも優れているのです。漢字とはなんと多機能なのでしょうか。とてもデザイン性が高い。

　では、この豊かな言語を扱う人のものづくりは他国と同じなのでしょうか？
日本が培ったデザイン力とは、ものづくりにおいて、繊細な手仕事を得意とする、細かな心遣いによるプロダクトアウトである。それを発揮する基盤として豊かな表現言語がものごとへの具体化に導くのです。

　２年生は今、エンジニアリングデザインⅡの授業において、白山麓の価値を見つけるための調査を行っている。調査するという行為は、見える事象の裏に秘めている意味や歴史などを観察するという事が大事なのです。みなさんは日本文化の中で、さらには白山麓という五感を発揮しやすい環境にいるのです。日本人の持つ繊細な感性を磨き多くのことに気付いてください。漢字が秘めている表層以外の意味を捉えられる学生なのだから与えられた課題は高いレベルで達成できるはずです。

日本で学ぶエンジニアリングデザインは他国とは違うのです。
どんどん多くの事を経験し、想像力を創造力に変換していきましょう。

It's Kodaka, the Engineering Design II teacher. In today's journal, I would like to send a message to the second-year students.

Many of you may remember United States President Donald Trump's recent visit to Japan. A CNN reporter described this visit with the phrase "Sumo, golf, and barbecue" as a form of satire to point out how little time was devoted to business. *¹

This word "barbecue" refers to "炉端焼き (Robata-yaki)", which, according to the internet, is a Japanese-style barbecue of fish or vegetables cooked in front of the customer, and usually served in old-fashion Japanese restaurants. As you can see, the single word "barbecue" is somewhat insufficient for accurately describing it. Of course, I am sure all this reporter wanted to do was to mock the visit of being more of a vacation than business, and that the details of the dish are mostly irrelevant. However, this news report made me think about how difficult it is to find a perfect match for Japanese and English words.

Every December, "the kanji of the year" is chosen at Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto. People can submit one kanji character they feel represents the events of that year and the one with the most submissions is selected. This tradition is a nice opportunity for people to reflect on the passing year and transition into the new one. I am always impressed by kanji's ability to represent so much information in one single character.

The ability to combine two kanjis opens up endless possibilities for numerous words. For example, the kanji "雨 ame (rain)" can be combined to create the words 春雨、五月雨、梅雨、冷雨、霧雨、時雨、氷雨、村雨、慈雨、雨音、香雨、酒涙雨、and 漫ろ雨. There are even words about rain that don't even use the kanji "雨" such as 天泣、神立、秋霖、鬼洗い、and 狐の嫁入り. There are over 400 names of "rain" in the Japanese language. This is because each character has its own meaning and holds Japanese cultural perspectives such as scenes and situations that people can picture in there mind. Using kanji, we can express smell, color, emotion, and seasons. In addition, kanji can transmit this information to the reader instantaneously. How convenient kanjis are! And stylish too.

The next question is "Are the engineers of a country with such an elegant language equally elegant in their engineering?" Japanese design is a product of skillful handwork and attentive consideration for others when crafting something. The rich Japanese language is the foundation for expressive communication and enables more specific communication of details.

The second-year students are currently conducting fieldwork research to discover value here in the Hakusanroku area. The key to research is to observe the deeper meaning or history beyond what's obvious to the eye. You are in Hakusanroku, in an extremely fortunate environment to feel the essence of Japanese culture. Focus on developing your sensitivity and observe the world around you. You are smart enough to notice the hidden meaning beneath the surface of kanji. I'm sure you understand the importance of your given task and can accomplish it at a higher level.

Engineering Design education in Japan is different from that in other countries. Actively absorb experience and transfer it into creativity and productivity.
