March 4, 2019 Engineering Design Final Presentation

Hello, it's Jonathan the camera man. In today's journal, I would like to share the first-year students' final presentation for Engineering Design. Engineering Design is a project-based course in which students learn various engineering skills using design thinking. In this semester's Engineering Design, students were divided into teams of three and given the task of creating a toy that surprises adults using biomimicry. Biomimicry is a method of innovation by taking inspiration from nature. Earlier this semester, students visited Ishikawa Insect Museum to get ideas for their projects. Since then, students worked on their projects for several months. In addition to actually making and refining the actual product, students created a timetable and management sheet, planned and designed their concept, budgeted and purchased the material, and created a presentation poster and PowerPoint. The Engineering Design course is the "real meat" of ICT, and students put many hours in working on their project.

On, February 21, students, teachers and staff gathered to watch the teams' final presentation. Each group explained which insect they took inspiration from, told their story of development, and demonstrated their final product. Please check out their presentations if you are interested in the video's below.

I had the several chances to watch the students work on their projects over the course of the months leading up to this presentation. Therefore, I know the effort they put into them, the difficulties they encountered, and how far they improved since their first prototype. The students came a long way and the audience applauded their success. However, as you can see in the videos, they are not perfect. I cannot help but relate to some of the teachers unable to not think they could have done better. This is probably how parents feel about their kids sometime. You know they are capable and the projects were great, so you wish they were even better. The students seemed satisfied and proud of their projects and I am happy they feel a sense of achievement. I also hope that they gained many experience points from this project to grow and learn from. You will cease to grow the moment you are satisfied. I also would like to implement this lesson into my life and always ask myself if I can do better.

2019年3月4日　エンジニアリングデザイン1B 最終発表

こんにちは、カメラマンのジョナサンです。今日の白山麓ジャーナルでは、先日あった1年生のエンジニアリングデザインの最終発表会について書きたいと思います。エンジニアリングデザインは国際高専のものづくりを学ぶ授業で、デザインシンキングを使ってプロジェクト活動をしています。今学期は３つのチームに分かれて、バイオミミクリーを使って大人を驚かすおもちゃを作る課題が出されました。バイオミミクリーは自然界からアイデアを得る手法のことです。今学期始め、学生たちは地元の石川ふれあい昆虫館を訪れ、プロジェクトのためのアイデア収集をしました。その後、数か月間に渡ってチームと一緒にプロジェクト製作をしてきました。実際のおもちゃの制作や改良に加え、タイムテーブルや人材マネジメントシート作り、コンセプト設定やおもちゃのデザイン考察、予算の計算と素材の購入、発表のためのポスターとパワーポイントの制作を行いました。エンジニアリングデザインは国際高専の授業の中でも手を動かす「実技」の場で、各チームはプロジェクトに熱心に多くの時間を費やしました。

2月21日、学生、先生と職員が各チームの最終発表を見るために集合しました。各グループは参考にした昆虫、製作の流れ、デモンストレーションを発表しました。興味がある方はぜひ動画をご覧ください。

私はこの数か月の間、学生たちの活動を定期的に観察してきました。ですので、彼らがこのプロジェクトにつぎ込んだ努力や苦労、最初のプロトタイプからどれほど進歩したか知っています。その努力が実り、プレゼンテーションを終えた学生は大きな拍手に迎えられました。しかし、動画を見ればわかるように、どのチームも完璧ではありません。先生が「そこで満足せずに、もう少し手を加えていればもっと良いものになったのに、惜しい」とついつい考えてしまう気持ちにも共感できます。きっと親心のようなものなのでしょう。学生たちのポテンシャルを知っているからこそ、さらに良いものを求めてしまう。学生たちは満足げで、私も彼らが手応えを感じたことを嬉しく思います。そして、このプロジェクトから経験値をたくさん得たことを祈っています。満足してしまったら、そこで成長はストップしてしまいます。私も人生にこのことを意識しながら常に「もっとできることはないか？」と自問しようと思います。

Hello everyone! I am Steven, a mathematics professor at ICT Hakusanroku Campus. I came to ICT and Hakusanroku in October of 2018. So, it has only been a few month since I have been here. Throughout my time here, I am always amazed at the resources ICT Hakusanroku campus offers the students, staff and the professors. I really wish I had these resources when I was a student and an educator at my previous institutions. So, in this journal, I want to introduce some amazing resources ICT Hakusanroku offers.

First, I want to introduce the 3D printers and the LEGO models the students and professors use to help them in their classes. Before coming to ICT Hakusanroku, I had never used a 3D printer nor had I ever seen LEGO models that could be easily used to teach students about basic programming. Throughout the short couple months I have been here, I have learned how to use the 3D printers and I have printed some models that I hope to use next year to aid in my classroom. As for the LEGO models, I have had a blast seeing the students make their robots and program them to do simple tasks and even to sumo! I have even heard they will teach students how to program next year with programmable drones! I am still wondering how I can incorporate a LEGO model into one of my math classes! If you have any suggestions, let me know!

Second, I want to introduce the Maker Studio on the first floor of our campus. This studio has some amazing machinery that the students and professors can use to create anything they can imagine. Some of the machinery (to name a few) include a band-saw, a laser-cutter and some drill presses. I even learned how to solder a basic circuit board thanks to a colleague. Usually, the students use this area for their engineering classes, but I have seen some students just using the machines for their own ideas! I look forward to using this area more in the future!

Finally, I want to introduce the library! I often visit the library on the first floor of the student commons area. Although the library is still lacking some books, it is rapidly increasing the amount of books available to both students and teachers. I visit the library at least once a week to learn a little bit about other topics and also to get some ideas. Further, I like to check many math books in order to get a lot of interesting problems to show the students or challenge the students. I think libraries are crucial to the foundation and the acceleration of knowledge. It is no wonder why the The Royal Library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt, the Library of Pergamum in ancient Turkey and the Academy of Gondishapur in ancient Iran were all centers of knowledge back in antiquity.

はじめまして！白山麓キャンパスで数学を教えているスティーブンです。2018年の10月から国際高専へ来ました。ですので、まだ来てから数か月しか経っていません。着任してから驚かされたのが、国際高専の白山麓キャンパスが学生、職員と先生に提供する充実した設備です。私が学生だった頃や、以前教えていた学校にもこの設備があったら良かったのに、と思わずにはいられません。ということで、このジャーナルでは、国際高専の白山麓キャンパスが提供する素晴らしい施設のいくつかを紹介したいと思います。

まずは授業で学生と先生が大変お世話になっている３DプリンターとLEGOモデルです。白山麓キャンパスに来るまで、私は３Dプリンターを使ったことがありませんでしたし、プログラミングの基礎を分かりやすく学生に教えられるLEGOモデルも見たことがありませんでした。この数か月の間に３Dプリンターの使い方を覚えて、来年の授業で使うためのモデルもいくつかプリントアウトしました。LEGOモデルについては、学生がロボットを製作して、プログラミングで動かして、最後は相撲を取るところまで見て大興奮しました！来年はプログラミングを使ってドローンを動かす授業もあるそうです！LEGOモデルを数学の授業に取り入れる方法を目下模索中なので、提案があればぜひ教えてください！

続いて、1階にあるメーカースタジオを紹介したいと思います。ここには学生と先生が、望むものをなんでも製作できる素晴らしい機械が揃っています。いくつか挙げると、バンドソー、レーザー加工機、ボール盤などです。ここの施設を使って同僚に教わりながらはんだ付けのやり方も覚えることができました。この空間はエンジニアリングデザインの授業で使用しますが、個人のアイデア実現のために使っている学生もいます！今後もこのメーカースタジオを使いこなせるように頑張るつもりです！

最後に紹介したい施設は図書館です！私もよくリビングコモンズの1階にある図書館を訪れます。まだ空いている本棚も目立ちますが、急速に冊数を増やしており、学生や先生に愛用されています。私も週に一度は図書館で新しい情報やアイデアを入手しています。さらに、たくさんある数学の本をチェックして授業で学生に挑戦してもらうための面白い問題を仕入れています。知識の収集と蓄積において図書館は無くてはならない存在だと思います。古の時代、古代エジプトのアレクサンドリア図書館、古代トルコのペルガモン図書館、古代イランのグンデシャープールのアカデミーが知識の中心地だったことも納得できます。

今日はここまでにしましょう。今後も白山麓キャンパスの素晴らしい施設を紹介できることを楽しみにしています。

February 21, 2019 Biology Presentations by first-year students

 

On February 21, the first-year students at Hakusanroku campus gave their final presentation in the biology class. For the past several weeks, students have worked in pairs on topics of their choice in the realm of biology. Each pair did research and prepared their presentation in English, a second language to most of them. Many teachers gathered in the Science Lab to listen to their presentations and ask questions. Hello, it's Kihara, the first-year homeroom teacher. Time flies and the school year is nearing its end. During the upcoming couple of weeks, students must finish their homework, reports, presentations, and final exams. It is sure to be a busy time and I wish them the best of luck.

In today's journal, I would like to talk about a course we have at ICT called "Career Design." In this course, students first set goals they want to achieve during the year. Later, they reevaluate their progress, and make the necessary adjustments to fulfill their goals. We visited the Kaga-Yuzen Kobo Hisatsune and experienced Kaga-Yuzen in this course as well. In today's Career Design class, we looked back on this year and asked the questions "What goals did I actually achieve?", "What goals did I not?", "Why?", and "How did I grow and what skills or knowledge did I acquire?" The aim of this class is for students to understand their current state and implement it into new goals for their second year. I heard some students mumbling to themselves "Did I grow at all this year?" and "I can't remember doing any extracurricular activities."

It seems recalling activities and recognizing ones growth is not easy sometimes. However, there was another phrase I heard constantly. That phrase was "What's wrong with this English?" Apparently, they were reading the goals they wrote at the beginning of the school year in April and the reflecting sheet they wrote in October. The students wrote both in English and seemingly noticed flaws in them. These were followed by phrases such as "Why isn't there a period here?", "I don't understand this sentence.", and "I can't believe how bad this English is." Watching my homeroom students mutter complaints to their own sentences, I thought to myself "We did a lot of different things this year, but maybe English is where we progressed the most after all."

Students' remaining time living together here at Hakusanroku campus is little over a year. Until that time, study well, play well and make the best memories you possibly can.

こんにちは。１年生担任の木原です。早いもので、今年度の授業も残りわずかとなりました。学生はこれからの１～２週間の間で、宿題やレポートの提出、成果発表、そして期末試験と忙しい日が続きます。体調に十分注意して、これらの課題を乗り越えていってください。

さて、今回はキャリアデザインという授業を紹介します。この授業では学生はこれまで、１年生の間に達成したい目標を立て、その進捗状況を振り返り、目標を達成するために必要な修正をしてきました。また加賀友禅の工房久恒を見学して、実際に加賀友禅を体験するという課題にも取り組みました。今回のキャリアデザインの授業では１年間のまとめとして、「今年達成できたことは何か？できなかったことは何か？その具体的な理由は？自分が成長したと思うスキルや知識は何か？」などの質問に回答し、現在の自分を理解した上で、次の２年生の目標に反映させるという課題を行いました。授業中には“何か身に付いたものあったかな？課外活動なにもしてないかも？”などの声がちらほらと聞こえてきました。

これまでに取り組んできたいろいろな活動を思い出したり、自分で自分の成長を自覚したりすることは少し難しいようです。そんな中、学生が口々につぶやいた言葉があります。それが、“この英文は何かおかしい”です。４月当初に目標を立てたときや、１０月に進捗状況を振り返った際に書いた英文に、どうも違和感を抱いたようです。“なんでここにピリオドが入ってないの？この文章の意味が分からん。昔書いた英文を読むのは恥ずかしい。”などなど、過去の自分が書いた英文にダメ出しが続出。担任としては「この１年間いろいろなことがあったけど、やっぱり一番力がついたのは英語力かな」としみじみと感じた瞬間でした。

ここ白山麗キャンパスで共同生活を過ごすのもあと１年程です。それまでの間に、しっかりと学んで、しっかりと遊んで、そして最高の思い出を作ってください。

This is my 1st winter in Hakusan-roku and, oh boy, it is very different.

The snow here is very wet and very abundant. Living on the west coast of America I became accustomed to believe all the snow is nicely tucked away on a mountain, reachable if you want to make the drive. A few years ago I brought in the New Year with my wife’s family in Hiroshima. Although it does snow there, none of the snow seem to stick to the ground. Though she is from Japan, she was also surprised how different the weather is on this side of Japan.

The Hakusan-roku area is great for us with its amount of snow and close proximity to the mountains! Both of us are snowboarders and living here gives us the opportunity to go snowboarding almost every weekend. With at least 3 different mountains in the area, it gives us enough variety to keep things interesting.　Fortunately, as well, the students are also into skiing and/or snowboarding. Hopefully I will have a chance to spend time with them on the slopes since one of the ski resort is close to campus. I hear one of the students is a “Pro”.

今年が人生初の白山麓で過ごす冬となりましたが、全然違うものですね。

ここの雪は大粒で重たい。アメリカの西海岸で暮らしていると、雪は山に降るもので、車を走らせてこちらから見に行くもの、という認識になりがちです。数年前の正月に妻の家族と一緒に広島へ行ったことがありますが、広島では雪が降っても地面に残ることはありません。妻自身も日本出身ですが、日本のこちら側の天候の違いに驚いていました。

白山麓周辺は山も近く、雪がたくさん降るので、ふたりともスノーボードをする私たち夫婦にとっては最適な環境です。ここに住んでいるおかげでほぼ毎週滑っています。しかも近い範囲に3つのスキーリゾートがあるので、飽きることがありません。学生たちもスキーやスノーボードを楽しんでいるようです。スキーリゾートの内のひとつは学校にも近いので、いつか学生たちと一緒に滑りたいです。プロ級に上手い学生もひとりいるという噂ですよ。

Hello everyone! Winter vacation has ended and the end of the school year is already in sight. Time flies by so fast!

Since the beginning of winter, it has snowed quite a lot in Hakusanroku. It’s pretty staggering driving from Kanazawa or Komatsu and see it rain to then coming closer and closer to Hakusanroku and seeing the rain become snow and seeing snow slowly piling up on the ground when there was nothing a few minutes before. This snow reminds me a lot of my home country Canada. With this snow comes all the winter activities that come with it. During the first big snowfall during a weekend in December, students and teachers spontaneously met on the school grounds to make snowmen, snow forts, have snowball fights, sleigh down hills etc. It was a nice break from the stress of studies and homework. No later than last week, students were invited to do these snow-related activities for physical education class as well. They seemed happy to be able to let off some steam in that way.

Of course, snow and mountains also invites skiing and snowboarding. There is a ski resort about ten to fifteen minutes by car from the campus called Ichirino onsen. The view from the top of the mountain is beautiful and I was very surprised when I realized that we can see Hakusanroku campus from the top! Some students have also started working part-time there which is good to develop their sense of responsibility and professionalism. In the end, winter in Hakusanroku offers as much activities as in the summer!

こんにちは、皆さん！冬休みが終わって、もう学年の終わりが見えてきました。あっという間ですね！

冬の訪れと共に、白山麓にたくさんの雪が降りました。金沢や小松から白山へ向かう車内、窓の外の雨がだんだん雪に変わって、さっきまで何もなかった地面に積みあがっていくのは何度見ても不思議です。雪を見ていると故郷のカナダを思い出します。この季節は様々なウィンタースポーツが可能になります。雪が最初に積もった12月の週末は、学生と先生が時間を見つけては外へ出て雪だるまやかまくらを作ったり、雪合戦をしたり、そりで遊んだり…勉強や宿題からの気晴らしに良いですね。先週はこれらの活動を体育の授業でする機会がありました。授業の中でストレス発散が出来て学生たちは楽しそうでした。

もちろん、雪と山と言えばスキーやスノーボードを忘れてはいけません。キャンパスから車で10～15分のところに一里野温泉スキー場というスキーリゾートがあります。頂上からの眺めが美しいし、白山麓キャンパスが見えることに驚きました。数人の学生はそのスキー場でアルバイトを始めました。責任感や社会人としての自覚を養うことになるので、良いことだと思います。結論として、白山麓は夏と同じくらい、冬も様々な活動があるんですね！

February 4, 2019 Snowball fight in PE

 

Hello, it's Jonathan the camera man. Last week, I found myself dodging left and right through a battlefield of... snowballs! Philip sensei, the PE teacher, organized a snowball fight for PE! Can you imagine having snowball fights for PE? I wish my school had them. Students and teachers gathered on the basket court, which was covered with kneen-deep snow, to blow off some steam from their daily studies. Teachers from the English, math and science courses joined and we almost had an even number of participants from both sides.

Students and teachers were divided into two teams. In the first twenty minutes, both teams were given time to build their fort. We dug and piled snow into a wall to hide behind during the snowball fight. (Although, they were quickly demolished by opposing suicide attackers diving into them.) After building the forts, we played two rounds of snowball fights: first students and teachers mixed, and then students versus teachers.

I can tell you students and teachers are very serious about their snowball fights at ICT. There were people throwing snowballs from behind the forts, dashing left and right, and launching suicide attacks with huge basketball size lumps of snow, which they dumped directly on their victims. Some students found creative ways to sneak around the other team on a flank attack. However, they were usually met with raining snowballs once spotted.There were no complicated rules and everyone had a genuine good time. Soon we were hot and sweaty despite being covered in snow. 

In the final ten minutes, both teams built a snowman before heading off to the onsen for a hot bath. This awesome snowball fight was possible thanks to the snow here at Hakusanroku and the family-like atmosphere of students and teachers living together.

2019年2月4日　体育で雪合戦

こんにちは、カメラマンのジョナサンです。先週、気付けば戦場カメラマンとして戦場に立っていました。飛び交っていたのは銃弾ではなく・・・雪玉です！体育のフィリップ先生が体育の授業として雪合戦を企画したのです！授業で雪合戦をやる学校は珍しいのではないでしょうか？少なくとも私の学校ではやってませんでした。学生と先生が膝の高さまで雪が積もった外のバスケットコートに集まって、思いっきりストレス発散で身体を動かしました。英語、数学、科学系の先生もたくさん参加し、大賑わいでした。

学生と先生は２チームに分けられ、最初の20分間は壁づくりをしました。両チームは雪を塀のように積み上げ、雪合戦の弾除けを作りました。（ただし、これらは相手チームの特攻する選手のタックルによって早々に半壊しました。）壁づくりのあと、雪合戦を２ラウンドしました。最初は学生と先生の混合チームで、２回目は学生vs先生で行いました。

カメラマンとして観察してわかったのは、ICTの学生と先生は雪合戦も全力で取り組むということです。壁の後ろから雪玉を投げる者、左右に避けながら投げる者、巨大な雪玉を抱えて特攻して相手に直接ぶつける者など、様々な戦術がありました。中にはこっそり裏に回って奇襲攻撃をかける学生もいましたが、すぐに見つかって集中砲火を浴びていました。複雑なルールもなく、皆が楽しい時間を過ごしました。すぐに雪だらけになりましたが、動き回って汗だくだったので寒くありませんでした。

雪合戦のあとの残った時間は雪だるまづくりをしたあと、温泉へ向かって身体を温めました。白山麓の気候と、学生と先生が家族のように共に生活をしている国際高専ならではの体育の授業となりました。

February 1, 2019 The Kobi Kronicles

Looking back over the months of living at Hakusan-roku, I recognize that things are always changing. I am in awe of how many creatures we live amongst. Kobi has been in close contact with wasps, bees, ants, centipedes, geckos, cow-flies, dragonflies, crows, monkeys, and stink bugs! While I busy myself setting the creature free from the cottage, Kobi is not disturbed. Since it is winter, he does not see monkeys often

-- just now and then at night, he smells them outside and whines to go out and run them off.

Like everything else, Kobi’s life is eventful and he too is changing. He is a tropical dog. He was born on Guam where is always hot and winter is a new thing for him. He has taken to it like a champion. He loves running in the snow, but shivers from the cold easily. His fur comes in thick and he sheds more than he’s ever done before. When he runs in the snow nothing takes the balls of snow off except a hot bath in the tub.

Yes, he like the O-furo!

Kobi enjoys the company of people, especially children and has the opportunity to do home-stays. Having homestays at Hayato-sensei’s home on many occasions allowed me to discover different sides of Kobi. For one, he’s learned to climb stairs at Hayato’s house, something he’d never done at my house. In Guam, our home had no stairs. I learned that he climbs on the table --at Hayato’s. He never does at my house! He is a learner.

ICT is a language environment where language is learned. Not only the students are learning another language, but Kobi is too. It seems that he is adding Japanese to his fluency in “dog language” and English language. My, my, he is becoming multilingual; if there is such a thing for a dog.  At Hayato’s house he gets to play with his kids, family, and friends. And Hayato tells me that Kobi follows commands in Japanese language. Well, I am shocked. Now that I know that he has an aptitude for language learning, I have to quit telling old ladies in the Sena area who talk to him that he understands English and Japanese. At least I can let him learn, right?

白山麓で暮らしたこの数か月を振り返ると、周辺がいつも変化していることに気付かされます。近隣で暮らしている動物の多さにも驚かされます。コビが発見しただけでもスズメバチ、ミツバチ、アリ、ムカデ、ヤモリ、アブ、トンボ、カラス、猿、そして、カメムシ。私はコテージに侵入した生き物を外に逃がすのに忙しいのに、コビは冬で猿をあまり見かけなくなったので落ち着いています。時々夜中に匂いを嗅いで外へ出してもらおうと鼻を鳴らすくらいです。

何においてもそうですが、コビの人生も毎日が盛りだくさんで、彼自身も変化しています。コビは熱帯地方出身の犬です。常夏のグアムで生まれ、寒いところは人生で初めてです。しかし、寒さにへこたれていません。雪の中を走り回るのは大好きだけど、すぐに寒さで震え出します。以前よりも毛が分厚くなり、生え代わりも激しいです。雪の中を駆け回って体中についた雪の塊を取るには暖かいバスタイムがベストです。

そう、コビはお風呂が大好きなのです！

コビは人間が大好きです。特に子供が好きで、よくホームステイをしています。ハヤト先生の家でホームステイを重ねるにつれ、コビの新たな一面を発見しています。まず、ハヤト先生の家で階段の登り方を覚えたようです。グアムの家には階段がなかったので階段は登ったことがありませんでした。もうひとつ、ハヤト先生の家ではテーブルの上に登るそうです。私の家ではそんなことしたことがありません！学習しているんですね。

国際高専は新たな言語を覚える環境が整っています。学生だけではなく、コビも新たな言語を覚えています。どうやら犬語と英語に加え、日本語も覚えつつあるようです。まあ、まあ、マルチリンガルになっているようです。（犬としては、ですが）ハヤト先生の家では子供たちや、家族や友人に遊んでもらえるようです。ハヤト先生によれば日本語の命令にも従うそうです。本当、驚きです。まさか言語習得の才能があったとは。「英語と日本語が話せるんだね」と茶化してくる瀬女のおばあちゃんたちに反論できなくなってしまいました。まあ、新しいことを覚えるのは悪いことじゃないですよね？

Last week, we heard about the students’ Engineering Design project to create a surprising toy incorporating the use of biomimicry. Several months after their first visit to the Ishikawa Insect Museum to gain inspiration, the students finally finished their first prototypes, and had a chance to present them to their teachers and classmates in class.

The base material for the students’ creations was a Lego EV3 kit, but each group added their own creative flair by 3D printing, laser cutting, and machining additional parts to complete their projects. The results may look unassuming at first glance, but that’s because the students engineered in the element of surprise as well.

An important part of product development is presenting that product to an audience, so during class the students practiced that skill with their own short presentations in English, followed by a short demonstration of their prototypes. Some of the demonstrations went well, but prototypes don’t always work as intended and some projects suffered some technical difficulties. 先週、学生がバイオミミックリーを取り入れたサプライズ要素があるおもちゃをエンジニアリングデザインのプロジェクトとして作っていると聞きました。インスピレーションを得るために石川県ふれあい昆虫館を訪れてから数か月、ようやく最初のプロトタイプが完成しました。そして先日、それらをクラスメイトや先生の前で発表しました。

学生の作品のベースとなるのはLego EV3のキット。そこに各グループがそれぞれ３Dプリンター、レーザーカッター、機械工学を使ってオリジナル要素を加えます。プロトタイプの一見地味に見えるかもしれませんが、それはサプライズ要素が含まれているからです。

製作過程において、他人に見せるプレゼンテーションは不可欠です。したがって、学生たちは授業で発表のスキルと英語プレゼンテーションの練習をしました。発表の後、作品の短いデモンストレーションがありました。上手くいったデモンストレーションもありましたが、プロトタイプには想定外のアクシデントが付きもので、技術的な問題が発生したチームもいました。しかし、我らが若いエンジニア達にはまだプロトタイプの微調整や改善を施す最終期限までの期間が１か月残されています。私も今から楽しみです！

Biomimicry: the design and production of solutions that are modeled on elements and ideas found in nature.

The students learned this word during the first half of the semester and have been striving to use biomimicry in their Engineering Design class. The task is to create a toy with some surprising element while using biomimicry.

In order to study biomimicry and find inspiration, the students visited the Ishikawa Insect Museum earlier in the semester. There, they saw specimens of insects from around the world and also observed live insects native to Ishikawa. In The Butterfly Garden, students had the chance to walk among the butterflies as they flew around freely. Yuya even made a few butterfly friends who landed on him and would not leave! Some of the students were even brave enough to touch some of the insects as they observed them. They recorded videos in slow motion, sketched drawings, and took pictures. Hopefully, the students are no longer afraid of insects!

Returning to class, students have been working on incorporating biomimicry into the toys they are designing. With various elements of surprise, it’s been fun to see how the students are taking their observations and coming up with new designs and ideas. One group even put a lot of time into gluing and cutting sheets of paper to create their own paper honeycomb. The students are finishing up their prototypes this week and I can’t wait to see how their ideas turned out!

バイオミミックリー：自然界に見られる生態やアイデアを参考にして、デザインや解決法を生み出すこと。

今学期の前半、学生たちはこの言葉を習ってからバイオミミックリーをエンジニアリングデザインの授業で取り入れようと奮闘しています。課題はバイオミミックリーを活用してサプライズ要素のあるオモチャを作ることです。

バイオミミックリーの発想を得るために、学生たちは石川県ふれあい昆虫館へ出かけました。そこでは、世界中の昆虫の標本や、石川県に住む昆虫を実際に見て触れることができます。チョウの園では、自由に飛び回る蝶々の中を歩き回ることもできます。湧也さんにいたっては、体にとまってもまったく逃げないほど蝶と仲良くなりました！勇気のある学生は見るだけでなく、実際に昆虫を触って観察していました。その他にも、スローモーション撮影をしたり、スケッチをしたり、写真を撮っていました。昆虫と触れ合って、愛着が湧いたかもしれませんね。

教室に戻ってからは、学生はバイオミミックリーをオモチャに取り入れるデザイン作りをしました。サプライズ要素と一口に言っても色々な形があるので、学生がそれぞれ観察した内容を活かした新しいデザインやアイデアを生み出すのを見るのが面白かったです。中には紙を切り貼りして蜂の巣を作った学生もいました。今週でプロトタイプは完成予定なので、どのようにアイデアが形になるのか見るのが楽しみです！
