June 5, 2018 ICT Sprouts

It has been about 2 months now, since the beginning of the school year. Everything around in Hakusanroku campus is changing to the better. Back in March, out from the windows, there was a lot of snow that caused a delay in the gardening completion. The snow was cleared up and I was following how architectures, engineers, and technicians are working hard and step by step through the whole procedure of removing the mud and planting the new sprouts.

That was similar to what we teachers and students were going through in the learning process. We are building up our learning community, where we remove the misconceptions about learning process and building up the good skills necessary to acquire knowledge. Science is not a set of facts to memorize. It is a process, a way of thinking, an adventure to discover and be able to handle facts, then make a good use of them towards a better life and a better world for all. As any other life skill, to gain scientific thinking skills, students at ICT are trying their best to make it their good habit and way of life. Our role as teachers is to provide opportunities for students to get curious, ask questions, and seek answers for those questions.

In Chemistry course, students are gradually learning how to follow up all different scientific procedures which will lead to clear and accurate results. They are also learning how collaboration and communication amongst their teams will save their time and effort. Students are getting through the importance of following the safety procedures and avoiding the careless and unsafe actions.

As we live in 21st century, there are plenty of resources besides books to find answers of many of the questions we might think of. That has advantages and disadvantages. When I was student, it was not as easy and fast as it is now to find references, to get a full published paper in a topic, I had to travel for hours or to wait for weeks for the hard copy of the paper to be sent to me by the author. Technology has saved a lot of our time and made it possible to access an endless amount of resources.

However not all of the accessible information is correct, and we might get lost with the rushing life routines. To define the good resource and the adequacy of the information found in those resources may seem to be very complicated. Learning to slow down and define your needs need a reflection and deep thoughts that are only available in the beauty all around in the nature.

Here at ICT, our students are very lucky. They are getting the advantages of technology full equipped campus that is built in the middle of the beautiful and inspiring nature. I can see how students are growing up their knowledge as the beautiful sprouts all around in Hakusanroku campus. They are all promising young people.楽しみ！！

ICTの新芽

学校が始まってから約２か月が経ち、白山麓キャンパスはとても過ごしやすくなりました。３月の頃は雪が残り、中庭の工事がなかなか進みませんでした。現在は雪が解けて、たくさんの建築家、エンジニア、技術者が力を合わせて泥を取り除き、新しい植物を植えています。写真はその過程を観察したものです。

私たち先生や学生も、学習において同じような過程を踏んでいます。学校のコミュニティを築き上げて、学習過程の誤解を取り除き、知識を得るための良いスキルを植えています。科学は暗記するだけの情報の塊ではありません。科学とはプロセスであり、考え方であり、真実を解明するための冒険であり、さらに良い世の中や生活のために活用するものです。どんなライフスキルも同じですが、ICTの学生たちは科学的思考力を得るための習慣付けを心がけています。私たち先生の役割は、学生が好奇心や疑問を持ち、答えを探りたくなるような機会を提供することです。

化学の授業では、少しずつ学生たちが正確で明確な結果を導き出すための色んな実験法を身に付け始めました。そして、チーム内で協力したり、情報交換をしたりすることによって時間と労力を削減できることを学習しています。安全手順を踏まえることによって、不注意による危険な行為を避けることの重要性も覚えました。

私たちが生きるこの２１世紀には、思いついた疑問の答えを知るためのリソースが紙媒体の物以外にたくさんあります。これにはメリットとデメリットがあります。私が学生だった頃、参考文献を入手することは難しく、時間がかかりました。書籍を手に入れるためには何時間も移動したり、著者から送られてくるのを何週間も待たなければならなかったりしました。技術の進歩により、これらの時間の削減と、無限の情報源が手に入りました。

しかし、全ての情報が正確とは限りません。そして、これによって毎日を忙しく 生き急いでしまうことになるかもしれません。どの情報源が良いのか、どの情報に妥当性があるのかを発見する作業はとても複雑に思えるかもしれません。本当に必要なものを見極め、のんびり生きるためには、周りの美しい自然からのみ得ることができる深い思考に浸る時間が必要なのです。

美しい大自然の中にありながら、施設が整ったキャンパスにいるICTの学生たちはとても幸運です。彼らの頭脳が白山麓キャンパスの周りの新芽のような開花しています。将来がとても楽しみです。

May 25, 2018 サプライズバースデーパーティ＆BBQ

Hello everyone. My name is Hitoshi Kihara and I am in charge of the first grader’s math classes. The Hakusanroku Campus of International College of Technology is a brand new campus. Here, students, teachers, staff and everyone involved in the school is working together to come up with creative and fun classes, activities and events. Many ideas are born and carried out every day. It’s interesting and exciting. Today, I will introduce two events that took place lately.

The first is a birthday party. The students have been living together in the dormitory for more than a month and have become quite close. It feels like they are longtime friends or brothers and sisters. This month we had our first surprise birthday party. We didn’t know if we could pull off a surprise party while using the same living space. However, this is where creativity and team play come in. The party was a heartwarming success.

The second is a barbeque party. This was a strong request from the students. However, the Hakusanroku campus is far from the city and there were several problems to solve. Where would we buy the food? How about the equipment? Where should the barbeque take place? How do we get everyone there? We decided that faculty members should backup the students since they have little knowledge of the local area and were struggling to plan the event all by themselves. The weather was a chilly for May on the day of the barbeque but the heat of the grill blew it away. I give my thanks to all faculty members who helped prepare it.

There are countless unique events, classes and activities at Hakusanroku campus that I wish to show you. Maybe I can talk more about them next time. Please look forward to it.

こんにちは。1年生担任の木原均です。授業は数学（基礎数学と解析基礎）を担当しています。国際高専の白山麗キャンパスは本年度からスタートした新しい学校です。ここでは学生・教員・職員そしてこの学校にかかわる全ての人たちが日々創意工夫を駆使して、いろいろな授業や活動、イベントなどを作り上げています。毎日たくさんのアイディアが飛び交い、そして実現され、とてもワクワクしています。楽しいですよ。今回は皆さんに最近あったイベントを2つ紹介します。
１つ目は、誕生会です。寮での共同生活もすでに1か月を超え、学生のみんなはすっかり仲良くなりました。もうすでに昔からの友達や兄弟みたいに打ち解けています。そんな中、誕生日の友達のために初めてのサプライズバースデーパーティーが企画されました。寮での共同生活なのに、当日まで本人に気が付かれることなく、準備ができるのか？みんなのアイディアやチームプレーの見せどころです。結果、パーティーは無事に大成功。とても心温まったひとときとなりました。

2つ目は、バーベキューです。学生からの希望が特に強かった企画の１つです。しかし、白山麓キャンパスはかなり人里離れた場所に位置しているため、バーベキュー実現のためには問題が山積みでした。食材は？道具は？場所は？移動手段は？土地勘の少ない学生だけで企画運営するのは難しいという状況だったため、事務局職員の皆さんに全面的にバックアップしていただけることになりました。当日は5月中旬にも関わらずとても風が冷たい日でしたが、バーベキューの熱気がすべて吹き飛ばしてくれました。事務局の皆さん、ありがとうございました。

白山麗キャンパスでは今回紹介したようなイベントだけではなく、授業や活動などでも皆さんに知ってもらいたいユニークなものがたくさんあります。次回はそのような魅力的な授業や活動も紹介したいと思っています。お楽しみに。それでは。

May 25, 2018 BBQ Party

On Saturday, we had our first ICT barbeque party at SENA Cottage Village. I say “first” because everyone had so much fun that we decided it should be a biannual event, spring and autumn. Students, teachers, family members and friends gathered to chat, eat and have a good time. There was wild boar, local fish “Iwana” and yakisoba in addition to your usual meat and vegetable. It was raining lightly, but SENA has a large roofed area perfect for partying. I saw students and teachers mixed at different grills, talking and laughing. After lunch, some people played soccer. It was a friendly atmosphere with students and teachers interacting like a family. I had a lot more fun than I expected and am definitely looking forward to part two.

土曜日、瀬女コテージ村で第一回バーベキュー大会を行いました。なぜ「第一回」と呼ぶかというと、あまりに楽しかったため、年に２回、春と秋の恒例にしようという声が多かったためです。学生、先生、そしてその家族や友人が集まっておいしい物を食べて楽しい時間を過ごしました。お馴染みの肉や野菜や焼きそばに加え、いのしし肉とイワナも登場しました。小雨が降っていましたが、瀬女にはバーベキューにぴったりの屋根付きのエリアがありました。私が到着すると大人と子供がグリルを囲んでとても楽しそうにしていました。食事のあとはサッカーを楽しむ人もいました。家族のようなフレンドリーな雰囲気で、想像以上に楽しかったです。次回が非常に楽しみになりました。

May 21, 2018 Bouldering in PE

Today’s PE was an introduction to bouldering using the brand-new bouldering room. Philip Cadzow, the PE teacher is a real-life climber and I think it is wonderful that the students are receiving guidance from an experienced climber. I talked to Cadzow sensei before the class and he explained that the aim of the class was to teach students that climbing is not about power or physical ability, but instead about skill and mental power. 

The class started by watching several videos about climbing. I could tell Cadzow sensei’s enthusiasm and focus on skill over strength from the videos he choose. After that, we moved to the bouldering room and did some climbing.

I was surprised at how many creative activities Cadzow sensei had up his sleeve on the very first day. Some examples are in the video. Students are very interested in bouldering and spend their free time using the facility. I hope it helps them develop their body as much as their academic mind. See you next time.

本日の体育は新しいボルダリング施設を使った入門の授業でした。保健体育の先生、フィリップ・ケザウ先生は個人でもロッククライミング経験者です。実戦経験がある先生に指導してもらえるのは素晴らしいことだと思います。授業の前にケザウ先生と話をしたところ、ボルダリングで大切なのは力や身体能力ではなく、スキルや精神力であると教えることが授業の狙いだと聞かせてくれました。 

授業の前半ではクライミングについてのビデオをいくつか見ました。選んだビデオから、ケザウ先生のクライミングに対する情熱と、力よりも技を重視している意図が伝わってきました。そのあとは移動して実際にボルダリングをしました。 

まだ１回目の授業なのにケザウ先生はたくさんの面白いゲームを持っていて驚きました。いくつか動画に載せてあります。学生たちもボルダリングが気に入ったようで、自由時間も施設を使っていました。学力だけではなく、体力を伸ばすきっかけになれば良いなと思います。また次回お会いしましょう。

May 21, 2018　Monkey Tracking

I am Dr. Pauline Baird. It is never a dull day for me living and working at the Hakusan Roku Campus because I keep myself busy. Besides teaching English, I explore the neighborhood with my dog Kobi. 

Kobi is the only official non-human residents at the Hakusan Roku. He is a 10-year old mixed breed dog (Maltese-Pomeranian) who loves walking and running every day. Each morning, we get our exercise, fresh air and vitamin D when we go walking. For half an hour, before 7:00 am, we run and walk on the sidewalks all the way to the post office and back. 

We usually pass early-morning cyclists, walkers, runners, and motorists who sometimes wave to us.  

In the evenings, you can find us either spending time at the dog-park across from the campus, near Michi no Eki. We visit with transient dogs and their families as they take a break from their long drive to and from Hakusan area. Kobi gets to play with dogs of all breeds and is not afraid to make friends. I get to make new human friends, too. 

Now that it is spring, many people in the neighborhood are beginning to plant their gardens and rice-fields. And Kobi is the delight of old ladies who come up to pet him and talk with him. I think he is beginning to understand Japanese—smart dog!

Because of Kobi, I have a new hobby - Monkey Tracking. This is how it goes. I lead Kobi out of the cottage on his leash. At the foot of the stairs, he leads the way in a sprint. He stops and smells something left there by the monkeys. He sniffs all along the pathway leading away from the cottages. Next, he leads the way around the periphery of the parking lot, up the bank, to the foot of a tall tree. 

Yesterday, Kobi insisted on going around the cottage and he led the way. We tracked the monkeys to the embankment behind the cottages. He refused to leave all the while looking into the bushes. Suddenly, he sprang towards the bushes and barked. Several monkey raced into the trees. By walking with Kobi the Monkey Tracker, I am appreciating nature, both flora and fauna in Hakusan. When he barks at 3 am, I wonder what more lies in the bushes and forests and roams our campus at night. Kobi might help me find out!

私の名前はポーリン・ベアードです。いつも忙しく動き回っているので、白山麓キャンパスでの生活に退屈な日はありません。英語を教えている時以外は、よく飼い犬のコビと近所の散策をしています。

コビは白山麓キャンパス唯一の人間ではない住人です。マルチーズとポメラニアンのミックスで、年齢は１０歳です。散歩が大好きで、毎日走り回っています。毎朝一緒に散歩をして、運動、きれいな空気、ビタミンDを確保しています。朝７時前、３０分ほど歩道を走ったり歩いたりして、郵便局までの道のりを往復します。早朝にはサイクリング、ウォーキング、ランニング、ツーリングを楽しんでいる方とすれ違います。時々手を振ってくれる方もいます。

夕方は、道路を挟んで向かいの道の駅近くのドッグランで時間を過ごしています。白山麓まで長いドライブをして休憩をしている家族とその犬によく会います。おかげでコビは様々な犬と友達になれて、人見知りをしなくなりました。私も新しい人間の友達ができます。

季節も春になり、近隣の住民が畑仕事や田植えを始めました。コビを触ったり話しかけたりするおばあちゃんがたくさんいるので、良い癒しとなっているようです。コビも少し日本語を覚えたような気がします。本当に賢い子ですね。

コビのおかげで、新しい趣味ができました。「モンキートラッキング」です。説明しましょう。革ひもをつないでコビとコテージを出ます。階段を下りるとすぐ、コビが走り出して、猿たちが残した何かを見つけて匂いを嗅ぎます。コテージ近くの小道を進んでいき、駐車場周辺から川べり、最後に高い木の根元に到着します。

先日、コビがコテージの裏へ回りたがったので、ついていきました。コテージ裏の川べりまで追跡しましたが、コビが一向にその場を離れようとせず、しきりに茂みの中を探っていました。突然、彼が茂みに向かって吠えながら飛び掛かり、何匹かの猿が木の上へ逃げていきました。「モンキートラッカー」のコビと一緒に散歩していると植物などの自然だけではなく、野生の動物に会うこともできるのです。朝の３時に彼が吠えると、いったい何が近くの茂みの中に隠れているのだろうと考えます。コビと一緒にいればいつか解明できるかもしれませんね！
