October 25, 2018 Just keep swimming

Assalmu alikom! I enjoyed my summer vacation back home in Egypt with family and friends. It was so exciting to see as many as I could of all of them. I was also lucky to have the chance to see different places and enjoy taking pictures like the ones you see at the bottom. Beautiful! Right? When I showed these pictures to friends in Japan they liked them, but not the same way I did. To me, the pictures had more meaning than just beautiful seen like those millions of beautiful pictures you can see on internet at any time.   The pictures hold knowledge that I gained, memories and experiences that I went through. It is always fun to know and learn more. Just watching is totally different from learning. No matter how long you stay in front of TV watching great swimmers win the races, you will never be able to be able to win the race or just swim yourself before trying.

Swimming is a very similar sport to how our brain process information and gain knowledge. Swimming is one of few sports that people of all ages can enjoy. Babies can start learning how to swim from day 1. Similarly, babies start gaining knowledge of all types from the very first moment in life. Our brains are like muscles and knowledge is like water. The more children get familiar to water and enjoy being in water the easier it is for them to swim.

We teachers, parents, or a society in whole are expected to provide the free chances for our children to enjoy water or knowledge gaining. But, can children be good swimmers by only being in water and enjoying it? They may be able to swim occasionally. But, can they be good or professional swimmers without enough and proper training for their muscles, they need to practice and struggle at some points to get better. Struggles and challenges are what make us better swimmers. We can always take our children to the pool, but it has to be their decision if they just want to enjoy swimming, or be professional swimmers.

It has been almost 7 months since ICT Hakusanroku campus opened and the new educational program has started, students might feel things are getting more challenging, and more effort is needed to be done. To my promising ICT students, I know you are now in the water all by yourself worried about the depth of water. Do not worry, all of us your teachers are all around watching, following your progress, and ready to jump in and help whenever needed.  Remember!  When life gets you down, do you want to know what you got to do...……… There is one thing to be done as my favorite anime character Dory said   “JUST KEEP SWIMMING!”

2018年10月25日　泳ぎつづけてごらん

アサラーム・アライクン！故郷エジプトで家族と友達と夏休みを満喫してきました。ひとりでも多くの知人に会えたことも楽しかったです。様々な場所を訪れたり、下に載せたような写真もたくさん撮ったり、とてもラッキーでした。綺麗な写真でしょう？この写真を見せた日本の友達も気に入っていました。しかし、私と彼女らでは、見え方が違います。私にとって、この写真はインターネットに溢れている綺麗な写真と違って、意味を持ちます。私が得た知識や、思い出や、記憶が含まれている写真なのです。新しいことを学ぶのは、いくつになっても楽しいものです。ただ見ることと、実際に体験することは全然違います。どんなに長い時間テレビの前でプロの水泳選手が金メダルを獲るところを見ても、自分で挑戦しなければレースに勝ったり、泳げるようにはなったりはしません。

水泳というスポーツは、脳が情報を知識へと変換するプロセスに非常によく似ています。水泳は全ての世代で楽しむことができる数少ないスポーツです。赤ちゃんも生まれた日から泳ぐ練習をはじめることができます。同じように、赤ちゃんも生まれた瞬間から知識の蓄積を始めます。脳が筋肉で、知識が水なのです。子供が水に慣れれば慣れるほど、水中にいるのが楽しくなり、泳ぐのも得意になります。

私たち先生、親、そして社会全体が子供に知識の水を楽しむ機会を提供することが期待されています。しかし、子供はただ水中にいて楽しむだけで良い水泳選手になれるでしょうか？多少泳げるようになるかもしれませんが、きちんと筋肉トレーニングや、練習や、苦労をしないと上達してプロの水泳選手になることはできないでしょう。苦労や挑戦することを重ねて、強い水泳選手になるのです。プールに子供を連れていくことはいつでもできますがですが、ただ泳ぐことを楽しむのか、プロの水泳選手を目指すのかは、子供自身が決めなければなりません。

まもなくICTの白山麓キャンパスとその新しい教育プログラムが開校してから７か月が経とうとしています。学生は少しずつ授業の内容が難しくなって、もっと努力する必要があると感じているかもしれません。私の期待を背負うICTの学生へ伝えたい言葉はこれです。あなたたちは水の中にたったひとり、水の深さに不安を覚えていることでしょう。心配しないで。私たち先生があなたを見守っています。あなたたちの成長を見ています。必要があれば飛び込んで助けます。これだけは覚えていてください！人生の生きがいを失った時、どうすれば良いかわからなくなった時、私の大好きなアニメのキャラクターのドリーが言ったこの言葉を思い出してください。「泳ぎつづけてごらん！」

いつか必ず目指したゴールにたどり着きます！

October 24, 2018 The Kobi Kronicles

One day this semester, the school placed a roving avatar robot-like vehicle on the front lawn. It is quite interesting just to see it move up, down, and across the grass all day long. It operated peacefully, until Kobi, the resident, 10-year old maltese-pomeranian came along!

One September morning, Kobi and I went out for our walks later than 7:30 am, when the robot was in operation. As soon as he saw the machine, he bolted towards it.

When he caught up with it, he began trying to use his little paws to catch it. The machine kept moving. It was a sight to behold --dog versus machine. Not to be outdone, Kobi darted around to the left and to the right, touching it here and there. It was something to see.

I couldn’t let him off his leash for fear he may injure himself or wreck the machine but he could not get enough of playing with it.

I am not sure what the machine is meant to do, but I have been thinking. What if I learn some programming and what not? An what if I make a toy, the automated kind? What if the students help me? I think this is a good idea and what better place to do it than at ICT. Stay tuned!

最近、巡回するロボットような機械が白山麓キャンパスの正面の芝生に配置されました。一日中芝生の上を前後左右に動く姿は面白いです。それまでは平和に動いていたのですが、ある日、10歳のマルチーズ・ポメラニアン、コビに見つかってしまいました！

ある９月の朝、コビと私は、７時半と少し遅めの散歩へ出かけました。その時間帯、ロボットはすでに稼働していたのです。動く姿を見た瞬間、コビはロボットに向かってすっ飛んでいきました。

ロボットに追いつくと、まずは前足を使って捕まえようとしました。しかし、ロボットは動き続けます。見ごたえのある戦いでした。犬対ロボットの対決です。負けじとコビは右へ左へ、ロボットをところどころ触りながら走り回りました。皆さんにも見せてあげたかったです。

コビが怪我をしたり、ロボットを壊したりするのが心配で、リードをはずすことはできませんでしたが、コビは一向に遊ぶことに飽きる気配はありませんでした。

そのロボットが何のために配置されているのかわかりませんが、私がプログラミングを覚えたらどうでしょう？あのような自動で動くおもちゃを作ることができるでしょうか？学生は手伝ってくれるでしょうか？面白そうなアイデアですし、ここICTなら実現するかもしれません。続報を楽しみに！

October 18, 2018 Kaga Yuzen Workshop Part Two at Hakusanroku

On Saturday, we held our follow-up Kaga Yuzen workshop in collaboration with Kobo Hisatsune. You can read about "Kobo Hisatsune" and our career design trip in Yamazaki sensei's journal from October 9. For our second workshop, Hisatsune sensei and staff visited us at the Hakusanroku campus.

The workshop began with students giving presentations on new ideas they came up with for Kaga Yuzen. There were many interesting ideas such as creating designs for license plates and glass corridors. Hisatsune sensei commented that "Experience comes with the tradeoff of flexibility. Fresh minds and ideas are always welcome."

In this workshop, students and teacher actually dyed a picture on a piece of fabric. The people of Kobo Hisatsune provided an assortment of designs to choose from as well as dyeing material. The pictures were outlined with thin lines that can be washed off with water after the coloring is complete.

At first, the cloths looked like white pages of a coloring book. However, we soon discovered that it was not that simple. First, the liquid dye soaks into the fabric, so it is difficult to sustain the colors inside the lines of the picture. Second, utilizing this characteristic is a fundamental technique in Kaga Yuzen; adding a second color for more depth of field or a realistic look. For example, the Kobo Hisatsune staff demonstrated how adding yellow to the tips of green leaves gave them a more natural look.

Each student used different colors and dyed the cloths differently. Even if they chose the same designed cloth, the pictures looked totally different. Hisatsune sensei remarked that he enjoys observing how everyone thinks and percepts color differently.

Kaga Yuzen dye does not come off with water. After rinsing the cloths and drying them, the color is permanent. After a couple of hours, everyone had their own Kaga Yuzen handkerchief.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the workshop and I hope it does not end here. Both sides promised to collaborate in the future, and I am looking forward to which ideas the students came up with may actually come true.

2018年10月18日　友禅染教室

土曜日、工房久恒との加賀友禅コラボレーション第２弾、友禅染教室が白山麓キャンパスで開催されました。前回のキャリアデザイン活動での工房訪問については、10月９日の山崎俊太郎先生の記事をお読みください。今回は久恒先生が白山麓キャンパスへ来て、学生と先生が参加できる教室を開いてくれました。

友禅染教室の前に、学生による「加賀友禅を若者達により広く理解してもらうための提言」の発表が行われました。加賀友禅デザインの車のナンバープレートや、加賀友禅空中回廊など、面白いアイデアがたくさんありました。久恒先生は「同じ道を長年やっていると経験と引き換えに固定概念が生まれてしまう。若者の柔軟なアイデアをぜひ参考にしたい」と語ってくれました。

続く友禅染教室では、学生と先生が、実際に白い生地に描かれた絵を染めることに挑戦しました。絵にはいくつか種類があり、参加者は気に入ったものを選んでいました。絵は薄い線が描かれており、完成したあとに水でゆすぐと消えるようになっています。

一見すると、ぬり絵に色を塗っているように見えますが、実際にはそれほど簡単ではありませんでした。まず、染料が布に染みるので、線の内側に色を留めるだけでも非常に気を使います。しかも、あえて染みさせてグラデーションを作ることによって奥行きや、本物らしさを表現する手法もあります。例えば、緑の葉っぱの先に黄色を加えるともっと自然に見えるのです。

学生は皆違う色を使って染めていました。同じ絵柄を選んだ者同士でも、染め方によってまったく違って見えました。「色の捉え方、考え方が人によって違うので、様々な発想を見ることができて面白い」と久恒先生が語ってくれました。

友禅染は水でゆすいでから乾燥させると色が定着します。全員無事にオリジナルの友禅染手ぬぐいが完成しました。皆、友禅染教室を楽しんでいたように見えました。工房久恒とのコラボレーション企画がこれで最後にならないように期待しています。近い未来、学生のアイデアが工房久恒との協力のもと、実現する日を楽しみにしています。

Hello. It's Kihara, the first-year homeroom teacher. Today, I would like to introduce our math class at Hakusanroku campus.

Here at the Hakusanroku campus, there are four math teachers. Hazwan sensei, Alaa sensei, Steven sensei, who just joined us this month, and myself. Our nationalities are all different: Malesia, Egypt, America and Japan. Together, we teach math in English. Can you imagine taking a math class in English? Many people may picture their junior high school or high school math class and think "understanding lectures and solving problems in English sounds difficult." I agree. High school math is difficult enough in your first language. At Hakusanroku campus, we have math lectures in English. However, the time teachers use the blackboard and slides is less than half of the period. Most of the class is devoted to time where students teach each other and solve problems together. For example, the following question was created by our first-year students. Can you figure out the answer?

Lately, more and more students are writing their answers in English and speaking with the international teachers. It seems they are gradually adjusting to using English in math class. This class is different from simply sitting and listening to a teacher, or taking notes written on the blackboard and solving problems. If you are interested in this style, maybe ICT is the right school for you. Oh, by the way, the answer to the previous equation is 1. Did you solve it? See you.

こんにちは。1年生担任の木原です。今回は皆さんに本校で行われている数学の授業を紹介します。

ここ白山麗キャンパスには数学の授業を担当している教員が4人います。私、ハズワン先生、アラー先生、そして10月から新しく着任されたスティーブン先生です。私以外は全員外国人で出身国もマレーシア、エジプト、アメリカと様々です。この4人の教員で数学を英語で授業をしています。さて、皆さんは英語で行われる数学の授業がどのようなものだと思いますか？「英語で数学の説明を聞いて理解するのは大変そう」、「英語で書かれた問題を解くのは難しそう」などなど、普段皆さんが中学校や高校で受けている授業がそのまま英語になった形を思い浮かべたかもしれませんね。もちろん、ここでも数学の内容を英語で講義する時間はあります。ただでさえ難しい高校数学の内容を英語で聞いて理解するのは、確かにちょっと大変です。ただ、このように教員が学生に黒板やスライドを使って説明する時間は授業全体の半分もありません。授業のほとんどの時間は、学生同士が問題を解き合ったり、説明し合ったり、教え合ったりしながら学んでいます。例えば以下の問題は今年の1年生が作成した問題です。皆さん、解けますか？

 最近では、問題の解答を英語で書いたり、外国人教員に英語で説明したりする学生も増えてきました。少しずつですが、英語を使う、数学を使うということに慣れてきたようです。ここでの授業は、先生の説明を座って聞くだけ、黒板をノートに写すだけ、問題をとにかく解くだけ、などとはちょっと違うスタイルで行われています。このような授業のやり方に興味がある人は、この学校に向いているのかもしれませんね。そうそう、上の問題の答えは１です。解けましたか？それでは。

新しく10月から着任したスティーブン先生

October 9, 2018 Career Design Trip to Kobo Hisatsune

On September 25, we took a special career design trip to Kanazawa. This time, we visited "Kobo Hisatsune", the workshop of Toshiharu Hisatsune, who is a successful Yuzen Artist in the field of Kaga Yuzen. Kaga Yuzen has a history of 500 years. Hisatsune sensei inherits its history and is an innovator of new styles and expression of Kaga Yuzen.

At the Kobo Hisatsune workshop, Hisatsune sensei not only does Yuzen dying on kimonos, but also other material such as wood, gold leaf and Tennyo-no-Hagoromo (robe of angel). The workshop is constantly developing new Yuzen technology to express Yuzen art on mediums such as interior, chinaware, tea boxes, stage costumes, etc. An example can be seen on the wall of the Starbucks coffee shop in Korinbo 109 in Kanazawa city. His work has received praise both nationally and internationally.

In this career design trip, we first listened to a lecture from Hisatsune sensei on his life as a Yuzen Artist and the difficulties he overcame. Being an ordinary businessman most of my life, I was fascinated by his experience. Also, we had a chance to view his workshop and actually try the dying process using Hisatsune sensei's coloring materials. The students were nervous, but managed to successfully color the fabric.

I was interested in how the students felt about the experience. The next day I read their reports and was surprised at how much they had to say. On October 13, the Kobo Hisatsune staff will pay us a visit at Hakusanroku campus and conduct a Yuzen dying workshop. Both students and teachers are welcome and I am very excited to participate.

キャリアデザイン特別活動　「工房久恒」訪問

キャリアデザインを目的とした特別活動を９月２５日に開催しました。今回は、５００年の歴史を持つ加賀友禅の世界で、伝統工芸の継承と革新に挑戦し続ける友禅作家久恒俊治先生の「工房久恒」を訪問しました。

工房久恒は、着物の友禅染にとどまらず、木材や金箔、天女の羽衣などの新たな素材に友禅を描く技法を独自に開発、内装や食器、茶箱、舞台衣装などで新たな友禅の世界を創出しています。その一例として、金沢市内にあるスターバックスコーヒー香林坊１０９の店内装飾があります。こうした活動は、国内はもとより海外メディアでも取り上げられ、高い評価を受けています。

今回の特別活動では、久恒先生が歩んでこられた友禅作家としての人生、そして幾多の苦難を乗り越えてこられたご経験を講話をいただくとともに、実際の作業場の見学をさせていただきました。長年企業でサラリーマン人生を送った筆者からすると、とても刺激的て感動的なお話を伺うことができました。また、実際に久恒先生がお使いの絵具を使って染色作業を学生に体験させていただきました。ドキドキしながらの染色でしたが、失敗せずに染めることができてホッとしました。

今回の工房訪問は学生諸君の心にどう写ったか興味がありますが、翌日提出いただいた訪問レポートを読むと、皆さんそれぞれに感じるものが多々有ったようです。１０月１３日には、今度は「工房久恒」の皆様が、白山麓キャンパスにこられて、友禅染教室を開講していただく予定です。学生のみならず教職員も体験できるとあって、とても楽しみにしています。

October 5, 2018 STEM Fair

Students have been on vacation for about one month and a half from the beginning of August to the end of September. During that time, they went back to their homes and could relax. They also had to work on a STEM project of their choice and then present it at a fair at Hakusanroku campus. “STEM” stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, so students had a wide variety of choices for their projects depending on their interests.

The STEM fair was held on September 26th. Students each presented their project in English with a poster and some even brought props from their project. These projects ranged from building a remote controlled car to measuring the effectiveness of house cleaning products on killing mold to surveying Japanese people and foreigners on their ratio preference for pictures. The students put a lot of work and effort into their projects and it was nice to see the fruits of their labor. Doing projects of that scope in a second language is not easy, but they did a great job.

All teachers who came to see the projects were invited to evaluate them. The two best students were awarded with a first and second prize. Furthermore, an additional four students were awarded with a special award. These six winners will have to present their projects again during the ICT school festival that will take place on October 20th and 21st. Good luck to the students and I hope many people will come to encourage them!

10月5日　STEMフェア

白山麓キャンパスの学生は８月のはじめから９月の終わりまで、夏休みで学校を離れていました。その間は自宅へ戻り、リラックスすることができたと思います。ただ、同時に、白山麓キャンパスで開催されるSTEMプロジェクトの発表準備をする必要がありました。STEMはscience（科学）、technology（技術）、engineering（工学）、mathematics（数学）の略で、学生は自分の興味に合わせて、広い範囲の中から研究テーマを選ぶことができます。

9月26日、STEMプロジェクトを発表するSTEMフェアが開催されました。各学生はポスターや製作したものを展示して、英語で発表を行いました。プロジェクトは、ラジコンカーを製作するもの、家庭用洗剤のカビへの効き目を測るもの、日本人と外国人に街頭インタビューを実施して黄金比の好みを比較するものまで様々でした。学生がプロジェクトに費やした努力の成果を見ることができて良かったです。このスケールのプロジェクトを第二言語で行うことは決して簡単ではありませんが、学生たちはよく頑張ったと思います。

発表を見るために訪れた先生には評価シートが配られました。もっとも優秀だった２人の学生には大賞が、追加で４人に特別賞が贈られました。この６人の学生は10月20日～21日に開催される国際高専の「高専祭」でもう一度プロジェクトの発表を行います。学生らにエールを送りつつ、たくさんの応援がもらえるように祈っています。

Hi again.  This is Maesa and I’m one of the facilitators at the Hakusan-roku campus.  I hope everyone had a good summer break and are ready to come back to learn something new and exciting.  This semester I continue to teach Computer Skills and Engineering Design classes.   One great thing about having the same course for multiple semesters is that we can explore more advance topics since these courses build upon one another.  During the last semester the students were able to build something amazing with an introductory knowledge.  I cannot wait to see what they build next after a little bit of experience and more advance topics.

Hello! I am Ryan Vicencio, one of the Learning Mentors at the Hakusanroku campus. I facilitate the evening learning sessions, helping the students with their homework and various projects. Right now, the students are off campus, enjoying their summer vacation. The summer programs have ended, and many teachers are starting to go on vacation as well. Campus is very quiet.

In contrast, the michi no eki across the street is bustling with life.

This station, called Sena, is a popular rest stop for tourists looking to experience the beautiful scenery that the Hakusan area has to offer.

Sena sports an omiyage shop and several cafes, and is the site for local events ranging from musical performances to classic car meet-ups. During the summer, the cafes sell ice cream to beat the heat, and with this summer being one of the hottest, ice cream is a must.

There are three options for ice cream at Sena, but the students’ and teachers’ unanimous favorite is the ice cream at a cafe called the Kijitora Coffee Research Lab (キジトラコーヒー研究所). Students would often be found there after afternoon classes and club activities, enjoying some unique soba tea ice cream or freshly made karaage. Sometimes, even teachers would end their work day with a delicious coffee float or some silky chocolate ice cream.

If you get the chance to visit campus, you should stop by for a chance at seeing the one of the cats after which the shop is named!

こんにちは！白山麓キャンパスのラーニングメンターのひとり、ライアン・ビセンシオです。夜のラーニングセッションで、学生の宿題や様々なプロジェクトを手伝っています。現在、学生はキャンパスを離れ、夏休みを満喫しています。夏のプログラムも全て終了し、旅行に行く先生が増えてキャンパス内はとても静かです。

対照的に、道路の反対側にある道の駅は大賑わいを見せています。

瀬女（せな）と呼ばれるこの道の駅は、白山エリアの美しい自然を体感しようと訪れる観光客の人気の休憩スポットとなっています。

瀬女にはお土産店とカフェが数店舗あり、音楽会からクラシックカーのオフ会まで、様々なイベントが開催されています。夏の間はカフェのソフトクリームで暑さをしのぐことができます。今年の夏は特に暑いのでソフトクリームの摂取は必須です。

瀬女のソフトクリームは３つの選択肢がありますが、国際高専の学生、先生満場一致のおすすめはキジトラコーヒー研究所です。放課後に訪れるとよくそば茶ソフトクリームや、揚げたてのから揚げを食べている学生の姿を見かけることができます。美味しいコーヒーフロートや、なめらかなチョコレートソフトクリームで一日の仕事を締めくくる先生も少なくありません。

白山麓キャンパスを訪れる際には、ぜひカフェの名前の由来にもなっている猫に会いに行くことをおすすめします。

Hello, I am Inoue from the Department of Global Information and Management. Together with Yamazaki sensei and Kodaka sensei, I teach the Engineering Context 1A class at Hakusanroku campus. The first semester classes are reaching their final stages and students are working hard on their final presentation.

How is everyone doing during this nationwide heatwave? On July 23, 41.1 degrees Celsius was recorded in Kumagaya city, Saitama prefecture. Apparently, this is a national new record since five years ago. Although Hakusanroku campus is one to two degrees cooler than downtown Kanazawa, we are still experiencing high temperature around 34 degrees with strong sunshine. There is little shade to prevent the sun streaming into the school building (see picture 1). You many wonder what it is like indoors. Actually, it is quite cool and quiet. In this journal, I would like to introduce the school's air conditioning system.

First off, ICT's main building has two floors. As you may have seen in other pictures, both floors are connected under a high ceiling. It may be difficult to distinguish the two floors (see picture 2). The ceiling is so high that you could probably build a third floor (see pictures 3 and 4). In addition, the walls facing the courtyard are full framed grass windows. The whole building is feels open and quite spacious. You may wonder how we keep such a building cool.

At first glance, many fail to even find the air conditioning units. Looking up at the ceiling or wall or listening for the sound of the air conditioners will do you no good. Actually, Hakusanroku campus's air conditioning system is under the floor. There are vent holes in the floor in and out of the classrooms (see picture 5 and 6). You can feel the gentle cool air coming out of the vent holes if you put your hand near them. The air stream is not strong and does not blow up dust. The space humans can detect is only two meters from the ground. Therefore it may actually be more efficient to have air conditioning in the floor. In addition, there are multiple vent holes, which means that less airflow is necessary to circulate the cool air. This leads to the quiet sound. Removing the air conditioner from sight also increases the interior aesthetics. I doubt many schools in Japan have an air conditioning system like this.

In the classroom, students can enjoy the scenery of beautiful sky, mountains, and green grass out the windows unaffected by the heat as they study, (see picture 7). This is another streng of the Hakusanroku campus. The mountains will change red in autumn and white in winter. What will it be like then? That is a topic for next time.

グローバル情報学科の井上です。よろしくお願いします。白山麓キャンパスでは山崎先生、小高先生と共にエンジニアリングコンテキストⅠＡを担当しております。前学期授業も終盤に入り学生たちはまとめに向かって励んでいます。

最近、日本では全国的に猛暑が続いていますが、皆様いかがお過ごしでしょうか。今日７月２３日は、埼玉県熊谷市で４１．１℃を記録しました。これは５年ぶりの国内最高気温の記録更新だそうです。ここ白山麓キャンパスでは金沢市の中心街より、１、２度気温が低いものの、最高気温３４℃前後が続いており日差しがとても強いです。キャンパス内の建物には遮蔽物がなく太陽の光を直接受けています（写真１）。校舎内の温度は大丈夫なのかと思うかもしれませんが、想像以上に内部はとても静かで快適です。今回は校舎の空調について観察してみたいと思います。

まず建物の構造ですが、教室があるメインの校舎は２階建てになっています。白山麓ジャーナルの写真でもたびたび紹介されてきたように吹き抜けが多くあり、１階と２階の境界をあまり感じません（写真２）。天井はとても高く、もう１つ上にフロアが作れるのではないかと思えるくらいです（写真３、４）。また、教室の壁、中庭に向けた外壁は全面ガラス張りになっています。このように、建物内は開放感あふれる作りになっています。これだけの広い館内をどのように冷やすのでしょうか。

初めて来た人が冷房の存在を見つけようとすると、少し苦労するかもしれません。教室の天井を見上げたり壁を探したり、音がする方向がないかと探しても見つかりません。実は白山麓キャンパスの主に２階フロアでは床下から冷気が出てくる構造になっています。写真５のような通気口が写真６のように教室内外の床に設置されており、これが冷房口です。手をかざしてみるとほのかに冷気が伝わってくる程度ですので、冷房の存在が気になりませんし、埃を巻き上げる心配もなさそうです。人間が体感できる空間は地面から２ｍ程度ですので、床から空気を出した方が効率的なのかもしれません。従来の冷房のように風の音が鳴ったり一部だけとても冷やされるということがありません。また、一か所だけでなく何か所から一斉に冷気を出すことで空気を対流させるほどの風力もいらないため、これが静音につながっています。冷房機を目立せなくすることにより建物内の景観も向上しています。このような床下タイプの冷房は全国の校舎でも珍しいのではないでしょうか？

教室では外の猛暑とは無関係に、快適な空間の中で窓から見える空・山・芝生の美しい景色に心癒されながら勉強をすることができます（写真７）。これも白山麓キャンパスの魅力の一つと言えると思います。夏が終われば紅葉になり、年末には雪に覆われることでしょう。そのときはどうなるのでしょうか・・・？それは先々のお楽しみにしたいと思います。

This is Kodaka, in charge of Engineering Context. Today I would like to talk about this class. In the first half of the class, we learned about ethics needed as an engineer, the influence and background of how various technology was born, and the code of behavior we should follow when creating something new. In the second half of the class, we studied an important communication skill for engineers, drawing. Drawing is a skill of communication that is not only a valuable method of communication but also a vital process in product realization through mind development and visual thinking.

The course is reaching the stage in which students use what they have learned in the first semester to create new value. We use half of the class for group brainstorming to devise a theme. Putting yourself in other people's shoes is indispensable for this activity. However, it also cultivates engineering ethics as well as user empathy resulting in a well-balanced understanding of the idea creation process. The verbalized idea reports created by the students will be finalized as visual reports. Next week will be our last class and evaluation date for the students' presentations. I am looking forward to their final products.

Lately I feel that people's response in social media to incidents in society is somewhat off. There is a clear lack of common sense in the general public's thought process, decision making, attitude, and action toward things in society. I believe this unbalance of mind and thought is due to greed, self-interest, losing track of the essence of matter, or unconventional logic. In this age of interconnected society, it is important to retain a wide viewpoint and broad mind. However, it is equally important to look at the essence of things from multiple angles and converge diverse opinions with conscious ethical thinking. This class will continue to focus on creating honest engineering ethics, where students can contemplate together how the engineer should be in the future.

　エンジニアリングコンテキスト担当の小髙です。今日はこの授業についてお話したいと思います。この授業の前半では、技術者として求められる倫理や様々な技術が生まれた背景と影響について学び、新たなものごとを創出する際の行動規範を学びます。後半では、エンジニアとして重要なコミュニケーションスキルを学んでいます。コミュニケーションスキルとしてのドローイングは、コミュニケーションだけでなく、ビジュアル思考による自らの思考展開にも必要な具現化行為として活用されます。

　授業は、前学期の成果として今まで学んだことを活かし、新たな価値を見い出すステージに差し掛かっています。授業１コマの半分を使用し、アイデア創出のためのブレストをグループで行い、テーマ設定ができる状況へ導きます。このような活動は「いかに人の気持ちに入り込むことが出来るか」が要となりますが、技術者倫理とユーザーの志向を考慮しバランスを図ったアイデアセンスを養うこととなります。そして、言語化したアイデアレポートは、最終的にビジュアルレポートとして視覚表現を行います。次週が最終授業なので合評を行いますが、学生たちのプレゼンテーションが楽しみです。

　今、メディアを通じて思う事といえば、世間の出来事への考え方や判断、態度、結果などに違和感を感じることです。精神と思考バランスについて、センスのなさに違和感を覚えます。そこにはお金が関わっていたり、私利私欲が混在していたり、本質からかけ離れた理論見解があったり・・・。情報化社会において広い視野でものごとを考えることは重要なのですが、多角的に本質を見極め、倫理観をもって多様な考えを収束できる力が問われているのではないでしょうか。この授業では、これからの技術者についてどうあるべきかを学生と共に考える場とし、倫理観を持った誠実なものづくりができる人材育成を目指しています。
