Hello everyone. I’m James Taylor, one of the English teachers at ICT.

We’re just a few days away from the end of the academic year – our first as ICT and our first at Hakusanroku Campus. I’m sure all the students, staff and faculty are eager for the spring vacation to start, but the end of the year is the perfect time to look back on what we have done and achieved over the past 12 months, as well as to consider how we can improve in our future efforts.

Personally, I have experienced many new things during the past year. I have taught a writing course; shared a class with three other teachers; helped facilitate an international conference; participated in a Design Thinking workshop for visiting students; been a guest on a live radio show; started recording my own radio show; seen monkeys, snakes and birds of prey from my living room window – all for the first time. I’ve also had the chance to work closely with colleagues from other disciplines, with whom I don’t think I would’ve had much interaction with on any other campus.

I’m looking forward to the holiday, but I’m also looking forward to meeting our new first year students at the end of March and seeing how our second year students get on as they prepare to go to New Zealand. It’ll be interesting to see how they, and ICT in general, develop over the next year.

こんにちは。国際高専で英語を教えているジェームス・テイラーです。

そろそろ国際高専と白山麓キャンパスの一年目が終わります。学生、スタッフ、教員のみなさんは春休みを楽しみにしていると思いますが、今の時期は1年間にやったことやできたこと、そしてこれからどうやってもっと良くできるのを考える時期です。

今年、僕はいろんな新しい経験がありました。英語のライティングの授業を教えて、他の3人の先生と一緒に授業をして、国際学会のボランティアをして、見学に来た学生のデザインシンキング体験のファシリテーターをして、生放送のラジオ番組に出演して、自分のラジオ番組を作り始めて、リビングから猿や蛇、タカやワシを見ました。そして、白山麓キャンパスのおかげで英語の先生だけではなく、他の科目の先生との交流が増えました。

僕も春休みを楽しみにしていますけど、新しいい1年生に会うのも、2年生の成長を見るのも、国際高専の発展を見るのが楽しみにしています。

March 12, 2019 Harvest Season

It is that time of the year when all students all over Japan are busy taking exams and tests of all kinds. Taking tests is not a fun experience to go through for anyone. Especially when the results of what people do on a test paper for only 50 or 90 minutes can affect their future in a good or bad way. It is a dramatic life turning point. Results of tests should be seen only as one of many signs of skill and knowledge mastery. Passing or getting good scores in tests should not be a goal or the sole way of judging achievements. I believe that tests can be used as a learning experience not a goal to aim for on its own.

Different from most of the schools, the ICT educational program is not test-centered. Besides exams, there are many other ways that we use here to measure learning progress and skills development. I had a lot of fun last week watching students` various presentations either in Biology or Engineering Design courses. In Biology, students researched new or studied topics on their own. Seeing many of them confidently presenting gave me an impression on how much they enjoyed the researching experience. The amount of knowledge they found out and were excited to share cannot be measured on a piece of paper.  The Engineering Design products that students made grew and improved from their original ideas. The students' understanding also grew and improved. The amount of skills gained from those kind of experience is unmeasurable.

In Chemistry, the course that I teach, students were busy mastering that interesting yet challenging knowledge and content through group discussions, experiments, projects, notetaking and problem solving. While deepening their understanding of basic chemistry concepts, students improved learning skills that will stay with them for their life time. They are getting better in lots of learning skills as taking effective notes, or accessing the chemistry textbook, the English language of the book is college level and can be tough even for native English speakers. Besides books, tests and projects, students were also required to build up a chemistry portfolio that shows learning evidence and their reflection and comments on their own learning process. I was so happy to read their comments and reflections, it helped me also to know their interests better. They seem to recognize their strength and weaknesses, which will help them improve even more over next school year. The effort that they made was helping their learning skills ripen as a fruit on a tree that is getting ready for a harvest. Reaching aimed goals is a great pleasure. Seeing results of your efforts relieves all the stress and pressure the person has gone through time.

この時期は日本中の学生が様々な種類のテストを受けています。テストを受けるというのは楽しい体験ではありません。特に、1枚の紙と50分～90分の結果次第では自分の将来に大きな影響を与える場合はなおさらです。人生の大きな分岐点です。テストの結果はあくまでスキルや知識の熟達を測る指数のひとつであるべきです。テストで良い点数を取ることや、合格したりすることが目標になってしまったり、成果を測る唯一の方法になってはなりません。私はテストが学習のための手段であり、テストが目標になるべきではないと思います。

多くの学校と違って、国際高専の教育はテスト中心ではありません。テスト以外にもたくさんの方法を使って学生の進行度やスキルの熟達具合を測ります。先週、学生たちは生物とエンジニアリングデザインで発表を行いました。私も楽しく拝見させてもらいました。生物では、学生たちは授業で学んだ内容や興味のあるテーマについてリサーチと発表を行いました。楽しそうに発表している姿を見ると、リサーチすることを楽しんでいる印象を受けました。彼らが自分たちで発見し、発表という形で共有したいと思った知識はテスト用紙で測れるものではありません。エンジニアリングデザインの成果物は学生のアイデアから生まれ、学生の手によって形になりました。製作を行う中で、学生たちのものづくりに対する知識と経験も同様に成長しました。これらのプロジェクトから得られた技術や経験も計り知れません。

私が教える化学の授業では、学生たちは面白くも難しい知識の修得をグループディスカッション、実験、プロジェクト、ノート取り、課題解決によって行ってきました。化学の基本的なコンセプトの理解を深めつつ、生涯役に立つような学習スキルを体得しました。ノート取りや化学の教科書の使い方が上達しています。使用している英語の教科書は大学レベルのもので、ネイティブスピーカーも苦戦する可能性があるにも関わらず、です。教科書、テスト、プロジェクト以外に、学生は自身の上達の証拠とその感想を記載した化学のポートフォリオの作成を義務付けました。彼らの感想を読むと、同時に興味がある分野もわかるのでとても嬉しくなります。学生たちはそれぞれ自分の長所と短所を把握しているようなので、来年はそれを活かしてさらに成長してくれることでしょう。彼らが学習スキルを実らせるために行った努力は、果実園が収穫期を迎えるかのごとく熟成させたことでしょう。設定した目標を達成することは快感です。努力が実を結ぶことを目にすればそれまでのストレスやプレッシャーを全て消し去ってくれます。

載せた写真には、学生たちがプレゼンテーションを行ったり、「ザ・元素ゲーム・イノベーター選手権」のために製作したカードやボードゲームを試遊したりしている姿が写っています。もっとも高評価だった３つのゲームはラーニング・コモンズに設置され、今後入学する学生も楽しむことができるようになります。

Hello, it's Kihara, the first-year homeroom teacher. Time flies and the school year is nearing its end. During the upcoming couple of weeks, students must finish their homework, reports, presentations, and final exams. It is sure to be a busy time and I wish them the best of luck.

In today's journal, I would like to talk about a course we have at ICT called "Career Design." In this course, students first set goals they want to achieve during the year. Later, they reevaluate their progress, and make the necessary adjustments to fulfill their goals. We visited the Kaga-Yuzen Kobo Hisatsune and experienced Kaga-Yuzen in this course as well. In today's Career Design class, we looked back on this year and asked the questions "What goals did I actually achieve?", "What goals did I not?", "Why?", and "How did I grow and what skills or knowledge did I acquire?" The aim of this class is for students to understand their current state and implement it into new goals for their second year. I heard some students mumbling to themselves "Did I grow at all this year?" and "I can't remember doing any extracurricular activities."

It seems recalling activities and recognizing ones growth is not easy sometimes. However, there was another phrase I heard constantly. That phrase was "What's wrong with this English?" Apparently, they were reading the goals they wrote at the beginning of the school year in April and the reflecting sheet they wrote in October. The students wrote both in English and seemingly noticed flaws in them. These were followed by phrases such as "Why isn't there a period here?", "I don't understand this sentence.", and "I can't believe how bad this English is." Watching my homeroom students mutter complaints to their own sentences, I thought to myself "We did a lot of different things this year, but maybe English is where we progressed the most after all."

Students' remaining time living together here at Hakusanroku campus is little over a year. Until that time, study well, play well and make the best memories you possibly can.

こんにちは。１年生担任の木原です。早いもので、今年度の授業も残りわずかとなりました。学生はこれからの１～２週間の間で、宿題やレポートの提出、成果発表、そして期末試験と忙しい日が続きます。体調に十分注意して、これらの課題を乗り越えていってください。

さて、今回はキャリアデザインという授業を紹介します。この授業では学生はこれまで、１年生の間に達成したい目標を立て、その進捗状況を振り返り、目標を達成するために必要な修正をしてきました。また加賀友禅の工房久恒を見学して、実際に加賀友禅を体験するという課題にも取り組みました。今回のキャリアデザインの授業では１年間のまとめとして、「今年達成できたことは何か？できなかったことは何か？その具体的な理由は？自分が成長したと思うスキルや知識は何か？」などの質問に回答し、現在の自分を理解した上で、次の２年生の目標に反映させるという課題を行いました。授業中には“何か身に付いたものあったかな？課外活動なにもしてないかも？”などの声がちらほらと聞こえてきました。

これまでに取り組んできたいろいろな活動を思い出したり、自分で自分の成長を自覚したりすることは少し難しいようです。そんな中、学生が口々につぶやいた言葉があります。それが、“この英文は何かおかしい”です。４月当初に目標を立てたときや、１０月に進捗状況を振り返った際に書いた英文に、どうも違和感を抱いたようです。“なんでここにピリオドが入ってないの？この文章の意味が分からん。昔書いた英文を読むのは恥ずかしい。”などなど、過去の自分が書いた英文にダメ出しが続出。担任としては「この１年間いろいろなことがあったけど、やっぱり一番力がついたのは英語力かな」としみじみと感じた瞬間でした。

ここ白山麗キャンパスで共同生活を過ごすのもあと１年程です。それまでの間に、しっかりと学んで、しっかりと遊んで、そして最高の思い出を作ってください。

This is my 1st winter in Hakusan-roku and, oh boy, it is very different.

The snow here is very wet and very abundant. Living on the west coast of America I became accustomed to believe all the snow is nicely tucked away on a mountain, reachable if you want to make the drive. A few years ago I brought in the New Year with my wife’s family in Hiroshima. Although it does snow there, none of the snow seem to stick to the ground. Though she is from Japan, she was also surprised how different the weather is on this side of Japan.

The Hakusan-roku area is great for us with its amount of snow and close proximity to the mountains! Both of us are snowboarders and living here gives us the opportunity to go snowboarding almost every weekend. With at least 3 different mountains in the area, it gives us enough variety to keep things interesting.　Fortunately, as well, the students are also into skiing and/or snowboarding. Hopefully I will have a chance to spend time with them on the slopes since one of the ski resort is close to campus. I hear one of the students is a “Pro”.

今年が人生初の白山麓で過ごす冬となりましたが、全然違うものですね。

ここの雪は大粒で重たい。アメリカの西海岸で暮らしていると、雪は山に降るもので、車を走らせてこちらから見に行くもの、という認識になりがちです。数年前の正月に妻の家族と一緒に広島へ行ったことがありますが、広島では雪が降っても地面に残ることはありません。妻自身も日本出身ですが、日本のこちら側の天候の違いに驚いていました。

白山麓周辺は山も近く、雪がたくさん降るので、ふたりともスノーボードをする私たち夫婦にとっては最適な環境です。ここに住んでいるおかげでほぼ毎週滑っています。しかも近い範囲に3つのスキーリゾートがあるので、飽きることがありません。学生たちもスキーやスノーボードを楽しんでいるようです。スキーリゾートの内のひとつは学校にも近いので、いつか学生たちと一緒に滑りたいです。プロ級に上手い学生もひとりいるという噂ですよ。

Hello everyone! Winter vacation has ended and the end of the school year is already in sight. Time flies by so fast!

Since the beginning of winter, it has snowed quite a lot in Hakusanroku. It’s pretty staggering driving from Kanazawa or Komatsu and see it rain to then coming closer and closer to Hakusanroku and seeing the rain become snow and seeing snow slowly piling up on the ground when there was nothing a few minutes before. This snow reminds me a lot of my home country Canada. With this snow comes all the winter activities that come with it. During the first big snowfall during a weekend in December, students and teachers spontaneously met on the school grounds to make snowmen, snow forts, have snowball fights, sleigh down hills etc. It was a nice break from the stress of studies and homework. No later than last week, students were invited to do these snow-related activities for physical education class as well. They seemed happy to be able to let off some steam in that way.

Of course, snow and mountains also invites skiing and snowboarding. There is a ski resort about ten to fifteen minutes by car from the campus called Ichirino onsen. The view from the top of the mountain is beautiful and I was very surprised when I realized that we can see Hakusanroku campus from the top! Some students have also started working part-time there which is good to develop their sense of responsibility and professionalism. In the end, winter in Hakusanroku offers as much activities as in the summer!

こんにちは、皆さん！冬休みが終わって、もう学年の終わりが見えてきました。あっという間ですね！

冬の訪れと共に、白山麓にたくさんの雪が降りました。金沢や小松から白山へ向かう車内、窓の外の雨がだんだん雪に変わって、さっきまで何もなかった地面に積みあがっていくのは何度見ても不思議です。雪を見ていると故郷のカナダを思い出します。この季節は様々なウィンタースポーツが可能になります。雪が最初に積もった12月の週末は、学生と先生が時間を見つけては外へ出て雪だるまやかまくらを作ったり、雪合戦をしたり、そりで遊んだり…勉強や宿題からの気晴らしに良いですね。先週はこれらの活動を体育の授業でする機会がありました。授業の中でストレス発散が出来て学生たちは楽しそうでした。

もちろん、雪と山と言えばスキーやスノーボードを忘れてはいけません。キャンパスから車で10～15分のところに一里野温泉スキー場というスキーリゾートがあります。頂上からの眺めが美しいし、白山麓キャンパスが見えることに驚きました。数人の学生はそのスキー場でアルバイトを始めました。責任感や社会人としての自覚を養うことになるので、良いことだと思います。結論として、白山麓は夏と同じくらい、冬も様々な活動があるんですね！

February 1, 2019 The Kobi Kronicles

Looking back over the months of living at Hakusan-roku, I recognize that things are always changing. I am in awe of how many creatures we live amongst. Kobi has been in close contact with wasps, bees, ants, centipedes, geckos, cow-flies, dragonflies, crows, monkeys, and stink bugs! While I busy myself setting the creature free from the cottage, Kobi is not disturbed. Since it is winter, he does not see monkeys often

-- just now and then at night, he smells them outside and whines to go out and run them off.

Like everything else, Kobi’s life is eventful and he too is changing. He is a tropical dog. He was born on Guam where is always hot and winter is a new thing for him. He has taken to it like a champion. He loves running in the snow, but shivers from the cold easily. His fur comes in thick and he sheds more than he’s ever done before. When he runs in the snow nothing takes the balls of snow off except a hot bath in the tub.

Yes, he like the O-furo!

Kobi enjoys the company of people, especially children and has the opportunity to do home-stays. Having homestays at Hayato-sensei’s home on many occasions allowed me to discover different sides of Kobi. For one, he’s learned to climb stairs at Hayato’s house, something he’d never done at my house. In Guam, our home had no stairs. I learned that he climbs on the table --at Hayato’s. He never does at my house! He is a learner.

ICT is a language environment where language is learned. Not only the students are learning another language, but Kobi is too. It seems that he is adding Japanese to his fluency in “dog language” and English language. My, my, he is becoming multilingual; if there is such a thing for a dog.  At Hayato’s house he gets to play with his kids, family, and friends. And Hayato tells me that Kobi follows commands in Japanese language. Well, I am shocked. Now that I know that he has an aptitude for language learning, I have to quit telling old ladies in the Sena area who talk to him that he understands English and Japanese. At least I can let him learn, right?

白山麓で暮らしたこの数か月を振り返ると、周辺がいつも変化していることに気付かされます。近隣で暮らしている動物の多さにも驚かされます。コビが発見しただけでもスズメバチ、ミツバチ、アリ、ムカデ、ヤモリ、アブ、トンボ、カラス、猿、そして、カメムシ。私はコテージに侵入した生き物を外に逃がすのに忙しいのに、コビは冬で猿をあまり見かけなくなったので落ち着いています。時々夜中に匂いを嗅いで外へ出してもらおうと鼻を鳴らすくらいです。

何においてもそうですが、コビの人生も毎日が盛りだくさんで、彼自身も変化しています。コビは熱帯地方出身の犬です。常夏のグアムで生まれ、寒いところは人生で初めてです。しかし、寒さにへこたれていません。雪の中を走り回るのは大好きだけど、すぐに寒さで震え出します。以前よりも毛が分厚くなり、生え代わりも激しいです。雪の中を駆け回って体中についた雪の塊を取るには暖かいバスタイムがベストです。

そう、コビはお風呂が大好きなのです！

コビは人間が大好きです。特に子供が好きで、よくホームステイをしています。ハヤト先生の家でホームステイを重ねるにつれ、コビの新たな一面を発見しています。まず、ハヤト先生の家で階段の登り方を覚えたようです。グアムの家には階段がなかったので階段は登ったことがありませんでした。もうひとつ、ハヤト先生の家ではテーブルの上に登るそうです。私の家ではそんなことしたことがありません！学習しているんですね。

国際高専は新たな言語を覚える環境が整っています。学生だけではなく、コビも新たな言語を覚えています。どうやら犬語と英語に加え、日本語も覚えつつあるようです。まあ、まあ、マルチリンガルになっているようです。（犬としては、ですが）ハヤト先生の家では子供たちや、家族や友人に遊んでもらえるようです。ハヤト先生によれば日本語の命令にも従うそうです。本当、驚きです。まさか言語習得の才能があったとは。「英語と日本語が話せるんだね」と茶化してくる瀬女のおばあちゃんたちに反論できなくなってしまいました。まあ、新しいことを覚えるのは悪いことじゃないですよね？

Last week, we heard about the students’ Engineering Design project to create a surprising toy incorporating the use of biomimicry. Several months after their first visit to the Ishikawa Insect Museum to gain inspiration, the students finally finished their first prototypes, and had a chance to present them to their teachers and classmates in class.

The base material for the students’ creations was a Lego EV3 kit, but each group added their own creative flair by 3D printing, laser cutting, and machining additional parts to complete their projects. The results may look unassuming at first glance, but that’s because the students engineered in the element of surprise as well.

An important part of product development is presenting that product to an audience, so during class the students practiced that skill with their own short presentations in English, followed by a short demonstration of their prototypes. Some of the demonstrations went well, but prototypes don’t always work as intended and some projects suffered some technical difficulties. However, these young engineers still have another month to tweak and improve their prototypes before the project deadline, and I can’t wait to see the results!

先週、学生がバイオミミックリーを取り入れたサプライズ要素があるおもちゃをエンジニアリングデザインのプロジェクトとして作っていると聞きました。インスピレーションを得るために石川県ふれあい昆虫館を訪れてから数か月、ようやく最初のプロトタイプが完成しました。そして先日、それらをクラスメイトや先生の前で発表しました。

学生の作品のベースとなるのはLego EV3のキット。そこに各グループがそれぞれ３Dプリンター、レーザーカッター、機械工学を使ってオリジナル要素を加えます。プロトタイプの一見地味に見えるかもしれませんが、それはサプライズ要素が含まれているからです。

製作過程において、他人に見せるプレゼンテーションは不可欠です。したがって、学生たちは授業で発表のスキルと英語プレゼンテーションの練習をしました。発表の後、作品の短いデモンストレーションがありました。上手くいったデモンストレーションもありましたが、プロトタイプには想定外のアクシデントが付きもので、技術的な問題が発生したチームもいました。しかし、我らが若いエンジニア達にはまだプロトタイプの微調整や改善を施す最終期限までの期間が１か月残されています。私も今から楽しみです！

January 28, 2019 Biomimicry

Biomimicry: the design and production of solutions that are modeled on elements and ideas found in nature.

The students learned this word during the first half of the semester and have been striving to use biomimicry in their Engineering Design class. The task is to create a toy with some surprising element while using biomimicry.

In order to study biomimicry and find inspiration, the students visited the Ishikawa Insect Museum earlier in the semester. There, they saw specimens of insects from around the world and also observed live insects native to Ishikawa. In The Butterfly Garden, students had the chance to walk among the butterflies as they flew around freely. Yuya even made a few butterfly friends who landed on him and would not leave! Some of the students were even brave enough to touch some of the insects as they observed them. They recorded videos in slow motion, sketched drawings, and took pictures. Hopefully, the students are no longer afraid of insects!

Returning to class, students have been working on incorporating biomimicry into the toys they are designing. With various elements of surprise, it’s been fun to see how the students are taking their observations and coming up with new designs and ideas. One group even put a lot of time into gluing and cutting sheets of paper to create their own paper honeycomb. The students are finishing up their prototypes this week and I can’t wait to see how their ideas turned out!

2019年1月28日　バイオミミックリー

バイオミミックリー：自然界に見られる生態やアイデアを参考にして、デザインや解決法を生み出すこと。

今学期の前半、学生たちはこの言葉を習ってからバイオミミックリーをエンジニアリングデザインの授業で取り入れようと奮闘しています。課題はバイオミミックリーを活用してサプライズ要素のあるオモチャを作ることです。

バイオミミックリーの発想を得るために、学生たちは石川県ふれあい昆虫館へ出かけました。そこでは、世界中の昆虫の標本や、石川県に住む昆虫を実際に見て触れることができます。チョウの園では、自由に飛び回る蝶々の中を歩き回ることもできます。湧也さんにいたっては、体にとまってもまったく逃げないほど蝶と仲良くなりました！勇気のある学生は見るだけでなく、実際に昆虫を触って観察していました。その他にも、スローモーション撮影をしたり、スケッチをしたり、写真を撮っていました。昆虫と触れ合って、愛着が湧いたかもしれませんね。

教室に戻ってからは、学生はバイオミミックリーをオモチャに取り入れるデザイン作りをしました。サプライズ要素と一口に言っても色々な形があるので、学生がそれぞれ観察した内容を活かした新しいデザインやアイデアを生み出すのを見るのが面白かったです。中には紙を切り貼りして蜂の巣を作った学生もいました。今週でプロトタイプは完成予定なので、どのようにアイデアが形になるのか見るのが楽しみです！

Happy new year everyone. Winter break is over and our students all returned in one piece. I am most happy as a teacher that they enjoyed a fruitful vacation, Christmas and New Year's.

I am in charge of Physics at ICT. So, I would like to introduce the experiment we conducted in class last week. Currently, we are studying circular motion. Last week, we conducted an experiment to find the formula of centripetal acceleration using a conical pendulum. I asked Ise sensei (who is skilled at making machines) to help me build the contraption for the experiment. It still took a whole day to build between the two of us. Changing the voltage applied to the motor of this homemade machine changes the angular velocity, which changes the vertical angle of the cone created by the rotating spindle… I guess that's enough complicated lecture. In the experiment, I asked students to measure the spindle's rotation period and the vertical angle of the cone. From their data, we calculated the centripetal acceleration, which was only off by 3% of the theoretical value. Great work! The error of my results when testing the experiment before the class was 6%, so I must admit younger students have better reflexes and are more accurate with a stopwatch.

My aim for this experiment was to have students to experience the formula we learned in earlier classes through actual physical phenomenon. How far my intention actually reached the students is beyond my knowledge. As for me, I was worried if the contraption would work properly at first. However, I was finally relieved when, after many trial and error of changing the material and shape of the spindle and rearranging the rotation unit, we finally made it work. I learned a lot from this class, even as a teacher. As always, physics, the connection of reality and theory is a profound subject.

新年あけましておめでとうございます。冬休みが明けて学生たちもみんな元気に帰ってきました。クリスマス、お正月と学生のみんなが有意義な時間を過ごして戻ってきたことが教員としては何より嬉しいことです。

私は物理を担当していますので、先日授業で行った実験について紹介したいと思います。現在、物理では円運動について学んでいます。そこで、授業で解説した円錐振り子を使って向心加速度の公式を導き出すという実験を行いました。実験器具は私が機械加工の得意な伊勢先生に手伝ってもらいながら１日がかりで製作しました。手作り感満載なこの装置ですが、モーターにかかる電圧を変えることで角速度が変化し、それによって錘が回転する円錐の頂角が変化し・・・、と難しい説明は要らないですね。実験では学生達に錘の回転周期と円錐の頂角を測定してもらいました。そして、そこから導き出される向心加速度を計算した結果、理論値から誤差３％という、素晴らしい結果が得られました。事前に自分でやった際には誤差は約６％だったので、やはり若い学生の方が反射神経がいいので、ストップウォッチの測定精度も高いようです。

この実験を通して、学生達には授業で学んだ公式が実際の物理現象に現れていることを体験して欲しかったのですが、さてさてどれ程こちらの意図が伝わったことでしょうか。私自身は実験装置の製作過程において、最初は予想通りに動いてくれない振り子に焦りましたが、振り子の素材や形状、回転部分の機構を工夫しながら、最終的にはちゃんと動くものが完成してホッとしました。それと同時に、教員であっても気づかされる点が多かったことが印象に残っています。やはり、現実と理論を繋ぐ物理は奥が深いですね。

Hakusanroku is enclosed by snow in winter, and students tend to stay in their dormitories. To prevent a lack of exercise, I decided to take charge of the winter sports promotion here at ICT. My choice of winter sport was skiing. However, many of the students do not have any skiing equipment. So, I contacted Kozakura-Sou, which provide rental ski service at Hakusan Ichirinoonsen Ski Resort, and have a relationship with us through regional cooperation activities in the past. They kindly provided us with an assortment of skiing equipment they were not using. Now the first floor of the Innovation Hub has transformed into a ski shop and students have no lack of skiing gear to enjoy.

January 13 and 14 severed perfect weather, and I took the students to Ichirinoonsen Ski Resort, which is located about 7 kilometers from the Hakusanroku campus. After riding the ropeway, you can actually see the campus from the top. Katabe sensei, our Japanese teacher and experienced skier, accompanied us and took charge in teaching the students the ropes. I believe this excursion served well as a chance for our students to move their bodies and enjoy the magnificent nature of Mt. Hakusan.

This year's winter is warm and there is less snow that usual. However, we, teachers, staff and students alike are excited to stay fit until spring by taking ski trips every weekend.

　白山麓の冬は雪に閉ざされるので、学生たちは寮に引き篭もりがち、運動不足が心配です。この解消のために、スキーを企画したところ、学生の多くは道具を持っていないことが判明しました。そこで、地域連携活動でお付き合いのある一里野温泉スキー場やスキーレンタル店の小桜荘の方々にお願いをして、使わなくなったスキーを融通して頂きました。おかげさまで白山麓キャンパスのイノベーションハブ一階は、さながらスキーショップの様相となり、学生達は不自由なくスキーができるようになりました。

　好天に恵まれた1月13日、14日の連休に学生達を連れて一里野温泉スキー場に行きました。このスキー場は、白山麓キャンパスから僅か７ｋｍのところにあり、ロープウェイで山頂に登ると、我々の校舎を望むことができます。一緒に参加された国語科の潟辺先生は、スキーのベテラン、学生向けにスキーの指導をして頂きました。ご指導の甲斐あって参加した学生達は全員山頂から滑走することができました。日頃の運動不足の解消と、白山麓の雄大な自然を満喫した休日になったのではないかと思います。

　今シーズンは暖冬のため積雪は昨年に比べて少なめですが、春までの体力維持のため、我々職員も学生と一緒に毎週スキーに行こうと盛り上がっています。
