It's Ise from the Science and Technology department. Today I would like you to join me on a day at Hakusanroku campus.

  In the morning, we gathered to discuss details of the Engineering Design class in the afternoon. Today's class was the student's mid-term report of the prototyping process. The final presentation date is two weeks from now. We debated how to support the students during this period.

  After the meeting, I worked on a personal engineering design project of my own: improving the cleaning staff's working experience. This morning I built a bottle holder to attach to their tool cart. Currently, there is no space to put drinks or cellphones and the staff members do not want to put them with the cleaning utensils. I made the bottle holder from plywood, which I cut of using the laser cutter. The cleaning staff were extremely happy and I am considering making more for the remaining three carts.

After lunch, it was time for the Engineering Design class. The students gave presentations on their project's prototype and received advice from teachers and other students. Many of the students were nervous during the preparation time at the beginning of the class. However, everyone completed his or her presentation without any problems. There were many things students could not anticipate before actually creating the prototypes. I believe that they are beginning to understand the complexity of monozukuri.

We continued improving the prototypes based on the advice given. Each group divided its members depending on their strengths to increase efficiency.

After school, students worked on either the extracurricular activity Rube Goldberg machine (pitagora switch), or personal projects. It seems like they are living a fulfilling life at the campus. I hope students utilize the campus's facility fully to expand their monozukuri ability.

国際理工学科の伊勢です。今日は私の白山麓キャンパスの一日についてお伝えします。

　まず、午前中は授業準備の打ち合わせです。午後からのエンジニアリングデザインの授業にむけて、改めてどのように指導していくか確認しています。今日の授業では、プロトタイプ製作の中間発表があり、2週後には最終発表です。発表までの流れについて、学生へのサポートの仕方などを検討しました。

　その後、個人的に進めているエンジニアリングデザイン活動として、清掃担当の方の作業改善のため、清掃用具カートに取り付けられるボトルホルダー製作を行いました。カートには飲み物や携帯電話などを置くのに良いスペースがなく、清掃用具にあまり触れない場所に置きたいという要望がありました。ボトルホルダーはレーザー加工機でベニヤ板をカットして製作しました。実際に取り付けたところ、非常に喜んで頂けました。他にも3台カートがあるそうで、追加の製作も検討しています。

午後はエンジニアリングデザインの授業です。プロトタイプ製作途中の状態で発表を行い、教員や他の学生からの改善提案を受けます。授業の初めに発表準備では、学生は緊張している様子でしたが、無事に発表を終えました。やはり作ってみないと気付かないことも多く、一筋縄ではいかないものづくりの難しさを感じているようでした。

改善提案を踏まえてプロトタイプ製作を続行しました。班の中でもそれぞれの得意分野を活かし、適切に役割分担して作業に取り組んでいました。

放課後には、クラブ活動のRube Goldberg machine(ピタゴラスイッチ) 製作、自主的なものづくり活動などを行い、充実したキャンパスライフを送っているようでした。このものづくりの環境を学生に最大限に活用してもらい、技術力を高めて欲しいと思います。

Hello. It's KTB, the Japanese teacher. I teach Japanese Language Expression and Japanese Literature at Hakusanroku. Today, I'd like to introduce the extracurricular activity of Kento Nomura, a Science and Technology department first-year student. That activity is skateboarding, which he first started during sixth grade. Last year, Kento won third prize in an under15 tournament held in Toyama. This year, he plans to compete in an open tournament in Kanazawa in August and is practicing hard.

Usually Kento practices on Hakusanroku campus's outdoor basketball court. However, today we drove to the skateboard park in Yoshino. First, we said hello to the man in charge of the skateboard park (who runs a Japanese oban-yaki shop nearby). There were two others already practicing when we arrived at the park. One in his twenties (a pro-skater!) and the other a junior high school student. Both of them knew Kento and exchanged greetings. Soon after, skateboard school boys arrived and began to warmup.

I asked Kento why skateboarding appeals to him. He told me that he likes how people from elementary school to adults in their forties can enjoy it together and the feeling of unity when the skater pulls off a street trick and the crowd goes wild. Also, he said that it taught him to respect his elders and rules of society, such as following proper procedure.

Kento practiced the trick “50 50 grind late shove-it out” for about an hour and a half before we said goodbye and returned to ICT. The junior high school student even bowed slightly to me. After dinner, it's time for Evening School. Extracurricular activities are a precious peak to refresh our minds in between study time.

こんにちは、国語科のＫＴＢです。白山麓では国語表現と文学を担当しています。今日は、白山麓でのＳ科１年生、野村健斗君の課外活動を紹介します。野村君の活動は小学校６年から始めたスケートボードです。去年は富山県で開催された大会のＵ１５の部で第３位に入賞しました。今年は８月に金沢で開催される大会のオープンの部に参加するので、それに向けて練習に取り組んでいます。

いつもは白山麓キャンパス内の屋外バスケットコートで練習していますが、今日は吉野にあるスケートボードパークへ出かけました。管理人のお兄さん（近くで大判焼きのお店を出しています。）にまずは挨拶です。パークでは２０代の若者（プロスケートボーダー！）と中学生が練習中でした。野村君とも顔見知りで挨拶を交わします。やがてスケートボードスクールの少年達がやってきて整列して挨拶をして準備体操を始めました。野村君はスケートボードの魅力を、「小学生から４０代の大人まで年齢に関係なく楽しめるところ。ストリートで技をかっこよく決めるとギャラリーが一緒に盛り上がるところ」、学んだことは、「年上の人に挨拶して、ちゃんと手続きを踏むなどの大人のルール」と語ります。

１時間半くらい、“フィフティ フィフティ グラインド レイト ショービット アウト”という技を繰り返し練習して、最後にもう一度挨拶して学校に帰ります。中学生が私にもちょこんとお辞儀してくれました。夕食が終わったらNight Schoolです。課外活動は勉強と勉強の間の、頭の中を真っ白にしてリフレッシュする貴重な時間です。

June 25, 2018　News from an Alumnus

The other day, one of our alumni, Gen Ueda called and gave me some fantastic news about him. The news really made me happy. The news he told me was that he got full marks (990 points) on the TOEIC he recently took. Wow, it's marvelous! Everyone who has taken the English Test knows it is so difficult to get full marks on the test. I truly admire his super English skills and comprehension.

I remember that he was working so hard to improve his English when he was at KTC (now ICT). The biggest thing I remember about him was that he participated in all of the international and English programs that we offered. He always tried to make good use of the chances that were in front of him. As a result, his English was improved as he was participating in these programs. He acquired great English skills from his experiences, not only from books or classrooms. I am proud of him and respect his great achievement.

I'm certain that I will share Gen's success story with ICT students. I will tell the students about the importance of taking chances. At ICT, on both Kanazawa and Hakusanroku campuses, students enjoy an excellent atmosphere and a lot of chances. I honestly hope ICT students will learn and acquire a great deal from them and be ready for launching out into the world in the future.

卒業生からのニュース

先日、卒業生の上田源君から電話があり、素晴らしいニュースを伝えてもらった。ニュースというのは、彼が最近受けたTOEICで満点（９９０点）を取ったというものだった。何とすごいことだ！TOEICを受けたことがある人なら、満点を取るのがどんなに難しいかを知っているだろう。彼の英語力を讃えたい。

今思えば、彼が金沢高専（現在の国際高専）にいたころ、実に真剣に英語力強化に努めていたものだ。特に印象的なのは、彼は私たちが提供する国際的そして英語のプログラム全てに参加した。彼はいつも目の前にあるチャンスを活かそうとしていた。それらのプログラムに参加するごとに、彼は英語力を高めていった。単に教科書や授業からだけでなく、体験から英語力を伸ばしていったのだ。私は彼を誇りに思い、そして立派な達成に敬意を払う。

この源君の成功をICTの学生に話し、チャンスを活かすことの大切さについて語るつもりだ。ICTの両キャンパスで、学生たちはその環境やチャンスを楽しんでいる。心よりICTの学生達がその環境やチャンスから多くを学び吸収し、将来世界に羽ばたいていってほしいと願っている。

June 20, 2018 Tedori Canyon Road

“What do you do out there,” I get asked that question a lot when I tell people I work out in Hakusanroku. Then they say, “There’s nothing to do out there!”

I disagree there is lots to do out here – it just takes a little effort, because it’s not immediately obvious. I have been doing lots of exploring on the Tedori Canyon Road. The road starts across the street at Sena Roadside Station and goes all the way to Jyuhachigawara Park for a total of 20km. On the way you can stop off and visit Bird Humming Torigoe, Lake Kobo and Tedori Gorge. Besides that, the road goes past lots of rice paddies and mountains, so the scenery is very nice.

The one problem is that from ICT to Jyuhachigawara Park, the road goes downhill. Getting back to ICT takes more work. If you are tired when you start back to ICT, then you will be really tired when you get back.

手取キャニオンロード

「休日は何をするんだ？」白山麓で仕事をしているとよくこの質問をされます。そのあと決まって、「何もすることがないだろう！」と付け足されます。

逆です。これだけ離れているからこそやれることがたくさんあります。最近、私は手取キャニオンロードの探索を楽しんでいます。本校の向かいにある道の駅「瀬女」からスタートする自転車道で、十八河原公園まで20km続いています。途中にはバードハミング鳥越や、手取峡谷などがあります。山や田園風景が広がっていて、とても美しい景色を楽しめます。

唯一の問題は、ICTから十八河原公園までずっと下り坂であることです。ですので、帰り道のほうが大変なのです。ICTへ引き返す時に疲れていたら、到着する頃にはくたくたになっていることでしょう。

Hello everyone. My name is James Taylor. I teach Listening & Speaking and English Expression here at ICT’s Hakusanroku Campus.

Many visitors to ICT’s Hakusanroku Campus – and the teachers and students who live and work here – are impressed by the brand new buildings here. But this campus has some older buildings too, because this site used to be a hotel. Some faculty and staff live in cottages where you can see some remnants of their use for paying guests, such as alarm clocks in the bedroom walls and a shampoo and body soap dispenser in the bathroom.

The cottages are behind the Innovation Hub, which was the main hotel building but now contains the cafeteria and bouldering wall. On the second floor of the Hub you can see what I think is the most interesting piece of renovation in the building: old karaoke rooms have been turned into radio studios, which are used by FM-N1 76.3 to broadcast a live programme about Hakusanroku life every Thursday at 1PM. I’m excited because I’m going to be a guest on the programme on 21^st June – if you have time, please tune in! Perhaps future ICT students will want to set up a Broadcasting Club? If they do, they have ideal facilities for it.

こんにちは。白山麓キャンパスでリスニング・スピーキングと英語表現を教えているジェームス・テイラーです。

国際高専の白山麓キャンパスを見に来る人たちとここに住んでいる教員と学生のみなさんはこのキャンパスの新しい建物は素晴らしいと思っていますが、このキャンパスには古い建物もあります。なぜかというと、このキャンパスは昔ホテルだったのです。イノベーション・ハブの裏にある教職員が住んでいるコテージにそのホテル時代のゲスト用の物がまだ残っています。それは、寝室の壁の目覚まし時計や、お風呂場の壁のシャンプーとボディソープのディスペンサーです。イノベーション・ハブは昔、ホテルの本館でしたが、今は、カフェテリアとボルダリングのウォールがあります。でも、ハブの2階に一番面白いリフォームがあると思います。昔のカラオケの部屋はFM-N1　76.3の新しいラジオのスタジオになりました。そこで毎週の木曜日の午後1時からFM-N1のパーソナリティーが白山麓の生活などについての番組を生放送しています。僕は今月21日に出演するので、楽しみにしています。もし時間があれば、ぜひ聴いてみてください！将来、国際高専生が放送部を作ったとしても、白山麓キャンパスにはそのアイデアをかなえる施設があります。

June 14, 2018　Undampering Awe

It is easy to get caught up in the grind of everyday life. Wake up, eat breakfast, go to work, eat lunch, finish work, go home, make dinner, go to bed, and do it all over again. As time carries on, a person can start feel like a cog in a complex machine. Turn the correct way, it is your only option. It makes life sound a little depressing I think but this is the reality for many people.
Yet, we who live in Hakusan Roku are quite lucky. Everyday, we are surrounded by beautiful mountains that reach for the sky. We are encircled by forests and flowers. And unlike the people that are lost in their daily lives the mountains and the forests do not become stale. It is as if the very essence of the word awe was born from these foothills. That is why I think we are so lucky. No matter how engrossed we get in our daily routines we are living surrounded by awe itself. It seems like everytime I think I have grown accustomed to mountains, they realize it and produce a scene so wonderful all I can do is watch as my breath escapes me.
In those breathtaking moments, the monotony of life is realized and I am left with a humble feeling. The nature that encomposses Hakusan Roku seems to do more than provide us with fresh air. It recycles our feelings and breaks the machine of daily life. That is why I think we are fortunate. That is why I smile to myself when people tell I am crazy to live so far from the city. That is why I have grown to love the undampering awe gifted to us from Hakusan Roku.

人間は決まりきった毎日に陥ってしまいがちです。朝起きて、朝食を食べ、仕事へ行き、昼食を食べ、仕事を終え、帰宅し、夕食を作り、眠りに就く。そして、次の日も同じことを繰り返すのです。繰り返しているうちに自分が精密機械の歯車のように、規則正しく回転することだけを求められているような錯覚に陥ることがあります。つまらない人生のように聞こえるかもしれませんが、たくさんの人にとってこれが現実です。

それに比べて、白山麓で暮らしている我々はとても幸運です。空に届きそうな美しい山々や、森と草花に囲まれています。そして、決まりきった毎日と違って、山や森に飽きることはありません。この山麓は「荘厳」そのものです。だからこそ、我々が幸運だと思うのです。決まりきった日々に陥ってしまった人々と違って、我々が毎日のルーチンにのめり込んでも、荘厳な山々に囲まれているのです。何度も山の景色は見慣れたと思いましたが、その度に息をするのを忘れて見入ってしまうような素晴らしい顔を見せます。

この息を飲むような光景によって、人生の単調さに気付かされ、謙虚な気持ちになります。白山麓の大自然は新鮮な空気以外にも我々に何かを与えてくれているようです。我々はとても幸運です。都会から離れて暮らすことを信じられないと言う人がいても、笑顔で返すことができます。だからこそ、不動の美しさを誇る白山麓が大好きなのです。

Hello, it’s Shinobu Ohara, one of the English teachers. It has been two months since students began living at ICT’s Hakusanroku Campus. I also have gotten used to my life at the cottage. The leaves of the mountain behind the Sena Michinoeki are becoming greener every day and I appreciate their beauty every morning eating delicious yogurt for breakfast at the Golden Eagle Café.

Students are now studying for their mid-term exams starting on June 7. However, next week they will be busy working on their extracurricular activities. Currently, extracurricular activities consist of English activities, programming, Pythagora Switch (Rube Goldberg machine), badminton, and capoeira (Brazilian martial arts). Professor Yamazaki is planning research projects to connect these activities to regional and industrial collaboration. For example, the English activity group making a presentation about the history and culture of the local Oguchi area, or the programming group creating exciting programs such as skill development for the Amazon Echo or embedded devices using IchigoJam.

Also, Hakusan Nature Conservation Center has contacted us suggesting events connected with Hakusanroku’s nature and four seasons. The fresh verdure beech forest, dogtooth violet flower (also called the fairy of spring), and mountain herbs (we tasted olive oyster and butterbur) in the spring, sculpin and fireflies in the summer, chestnut tiger butterflies, wild nuts and berries, and Japanese monkeys in the autumn, and snow shoes and golden eagle observation in the winter. Oguchi community center has proposed adventures in nature in the beech forest, firefly and chestnut tiger butterfly observation, and river recreation. Many of these activities can only be experienced in Hakusanroku and I am very excited to try them out.

今日は。英語科の大原しのぶです。国際高専白山麓キャンパスの学生寮に学生達が生活し始めて２か月余りになります。私も、コテージでの生活に馴染んできました。道の駅瀬女の向こう側にある山々の新緑が日に日に、美しくなっていくのを感じながら、ゴールデンイーグルカフェでとても美味しいヨーグルトを朝食に食べています。

現在、学生達は６月７日から始まる中間試験を前に勉学に励んでいますが、来週からは再び、放課後の活動が活発に行われます。学内課外活動としては、英語に関する活動、プログラミング、ピタゴラスイッチ（ピタゴラ装置）、バトミントン、カポエイラ（ブラジルの武術）があり、これらの活動を地域連携活動や産学連携活動と結びつけることを研究プロジェクト主事の山崎教授が企画しています。例えば、英語に関する活動グループが尾口地域の歴史文化調査をし、英語で発表、プログラミング活動のグループがアマゾンエコーのスキル開発やイチゴジャム（こどもパソコン）による組込機器開発に携わるなどワクワクする企画が進んでいます。

５月３０日には石川県白山自然保護センターの方から、白山麓の四季の自然、春は新緑のブナ森、春の妖精と呼ばれるカタクリの花、山菜（カタハとフキの試食をさせていただきました）夏はゴリやゲンジボタル、秋はアサギマダラ（蝶）や木の実、そしてニホンザル、冬はスノーシューでの雪遊びやイヌワシ観察といったお話しを聞かせたいただき、尾口公民館主事より、ぶなもり自然塾での活動であるホタル観察会、川あそび、アサギマダラマーキングなどを紹介してもらいました。白山麓でしか体験できないこともありますし、今後、たくさんの企画を楽しみたいと思っています。

June 5, 2018 ICT Sprouts

It has been about 2 months now, since the beginning of the school year. Everything around in Hakusanroku campus is changing to the better. Back in March, out from the windows, there was a lot of snow that caused a delay in the gardening completion. The snow was cleared up and I was following how architectures, engineers, and technicians are working hard and step by step through the whole procedure of removing the mud and planting the new sprouts.

That was similar to what we teachers and students were going through in the learning process. We are building up our learning community, where we remove the misconceptions about learning process and building up the good skills necessary to acquire knowledge. Science is not a set of facts to memorize. It is a process, a way of thinking, an adventure to discover and be able to handle facts, then make a good use of them towards a better life and a better world for all. As any other life skill, to gain scientific thinking skills, students at ICT are trying their best to make it their good habit and way of life. Our role as teachers is to provide opportunities for students to get curious, ask questions, and seek answers for those questions.

In Chemistry course, students are gradually learning how to follow up all different scientific procedures which will lead to clear and accurate results. They are also learning how collaboration and communication amongst their teams will save their time and effort. Students are getting through the importance of following the safety procedures and avoiding the careless and unsafe actions.

As we live in 21st century, there are plenty of resources besides books to find answers of many of the questions we might think of. That has advantages and disadvantages. When I was student, it was not as easy and fast as it is now to find references, to get a full published paper in a topic, I had to travel for hours or to wait for weeks for the hard copy of the paper to be sent to me by the author. Technology has saved a lot of our time and made it possible to access an endless amount of resources.

However not all of the accessible information is correct, and we might get lost with the rushing life routines. To define the good resource and the adequacy of the information found in those resources may seem to be very complicated. Learning to slow down and define your needs need a reflection and deep thoughts that are only available in the beauty all around in the nature.

Here at ICT, our students are very lucky. They are getting the advantages of technology full equipped campus that is built in the middle of the beautiful and inspiring nature. I can see how students are growing up their knowledge as the beautiful sprouts all around in Hakusanroku campus. They are all promising young people.楽しみ！！

ICTの新芽

学校が始まってから約２か月が経ち、白山麓キャンパスはとても過ごしやすくなりました。３月の頃は雪が残り、中庭の工事がなかなか進みませんでした。現在は雪が解けて、たくさんの建築家、エンジニア、技術者が力を合わせて泥を取り除き、新しい植物を植えています。写真はその過程を観察したものです。

私たち先生や学生も、学習において同じような過程を踏んでいます。学校のコミュニティを築き上げて、学習過程の誤解を取り除き、知識を得るための良いスキルを植えています。科学は暗記するだけの情報の塊ではありません。科学とはプロセスであり、考え方であり、真実を解明するための冒険であり、さらに良い世の中や生活のために活用するものです。どんなライフスキルも同じですが、ICTの学生たちは科学的思考力を得るための習慣付けを心がけています。私たち先生の役割は、学生が好奇心や疑問を持ち、答えを探りたくなるような機会を提供することです。

化学の授業では、少しずつ学生たちが正確で明確な結果を導き出すための色んな実験法を身に付け始めました。そして、チーム内で協力したり、情報交換をしたりすることによって時間と労力を削減できることを学習しています。安全手順を踏まえることによって、不注意による危険な行為を避けることの重要性も覚えました。

私たちが生きるこの２１世紀には、思いついた疑問の答えを知るためのリソースが紙媒体の物以外にたくさんあります。これにはメリットとデメリットがあります。私が学生だった頃、参考文献を入手することは難しく、時間がかかりました。書籍を手に入れるためには何時間も移動したり、著者から送られてくるのを何週間も待たなければならなかったりしました。技術の進歩により、これらの時間の削減と、無限の情報源が手に入りました。

しかし、全ての情報が正確とは限りません。そして、これによって毎日を忙しく 生き急いでしまうことになるかもしれません。どの情報源が良いのか、どの情報に妥当性があるのかを発見する作業はとても複雑に思えるかもしれません。本当に必要なものを見極め、のんびり生きるためには、周りの美しい自然からのみ得ることができる深い思考に浸る時間が必要なのです。

美しい大自然の中にありながら、施設が整ったキャンパスにいるICTの学生たちはとても幸運です。彼らの頭脳が白山麓キャンパスの周りの新芽のような開花しています。将来がとても楽しみです。

May 25, 2018 サプライズバースデーパーティ＆BBQ

Hello everyone. My name is Hitoshi Kihara and I am in charge of the first grader’s math classes. The Hakusanroku Campus of International College of Technology is a brand new campus. Here, students, teachers, staff and everyone involved in the school is working together to come up with creative and fun classes, activities and events. Many ideas are born and carried out every day. It’s interesting and exciting. Today, I will introduce two events that took place lately.

The first is a birthday party. The students have been living together in the dormitory for more than a month and have become quite close. It feels like they are longtime friends or brothers and sisters. This month we had our first surprise birthday party. We didn’t know if we could pull off a surprise party while using the same living space. However, this is where creativity and team play come in. The party was a heartwarming success.

The second is a barbeque party. This was a strong request from the students. However, the Hakusanroku campus is far from the city and there were several problems to solve. Where would we buy the food? How about the equipment? Where should the barbeque take place? How do we get everyone there? We decided that faculty members should backup the students since they have little knowledge of the local area and were struggling to plan the event all by themselves. The weather was a chilly for May on the day of the barbeque but the heat of the grill blew it away. I give my thanks to all faculty members who helped prepare it.

There are countless unique events, classes and activities at Hakusanroku campus that I wish to show you. Maybe I can talk more about them next time. Please look forward to it.

こんにちは。1年生担任の木原均です。授業は数学（基礎数学と解析基礎）を担当しています。国際高専の白山麗キャンパスは本年度からスタートした新しい学校です。ここでは学生・教員・職員そしてこの学校にかかわる全ての人たちが日々創意工夫を駆使して、いろいろな授業や活動、イベントなどを作り上げています。毎日たくさんのアイディアが飛び交い、そして実現され、とてもワクワクしています。楽しいですよ。今回は皆さんに最近あったイベントを2つ紹介します。
１つ目は、誕生会です。寮での共同生活もすでに1か月を超え、学生のみんなはすっかり仲良くなりました。もうすでに昔からの友達や兄弟みたいに打ち解けています。そんな中、誕生日の友達のために初めてのサプライズバースデーパーティーが企画されました。寮での共同生活なのに、当日まで本人に気が付かれることなく、準備ができるのか？みんなのアイディアやチームプレーの見せどころです。結果、パーティーは無事に大成功。とても心温まったひとときとなりました。

2つ目は、バーベキューです。学生からの希望が特に強かった企画の１つです。しかし、白山麓キャンパスはかなり人里離れた場所に位置しているため、バーベキュー実現のためには問題が山積みでした。食材は？道具は？場所は？移動手段は？土地勘の少ない学生だけで企画運営するのは難しいという状況だったため、事務局職員の皆さんに全面的にバックアップしていただけることになりました。当日は5月中旬にも関わらずとても風が冷たい日でしたが、バーベキューの熱気がすべて吹き飛ばしてくれました。事務局の皆さん、ありがとうございました。

白山麗キャンパスでは今回紹介したようなイベントだけではなく、授業や活動などでも皆さんに知ってもらいたいユニークなものがたくさんあります。次回はそのような魅力的な授業や活動も紹介したいと思っています。お楽しみに。それでは。

May 21, 2018　Monkey Tracking

I am Dr. Pauline Baird. It is never a dull day for me living and working at the Hakusan Roku Campus because I keep myself busy. Besides teaching English, I explore the neighborhood with my dog Kobi. 

Kobi is the only official non-human residents at the Hakusan Roku. He is a 10-year old mixed breed dog (Maltese-Pomeranian) who loves walking and running every day. Each morning, we get our exercise, fresh air and vitamin D when we go walking. For half an hour, before 7:00 am, we run and walk on the sidewalks all the way to the post office and back. 

We usually pass early-morning cyclists, walkers, runners, and motorists who sometimes wave to us.  

In the evenings, you can find us either spending time at the dog-park across from the campus, near Michi no Eki. We visit with transient dogs and their families as they take a break from their long drive to and from Hakusan area. Kobi gets to play with dogs of all breeds and is not afraid to make friends. I get to make new human friends, too. 

Now that it is spring, many people in the neighborhood are beginning to plant their gardens and rice-fields. And Kobi is the delight of old ladies who come up to pet him and talk with him. I think he is beginning to understand Japanese—smart dog!

Because of Kobi, I have a new hobby - Monkey Tracking. This is how it goes. I lead Kobi out of the cottage on his leash. At the foot of the stairs, he leads the way in a sprint. He stops and smells something left there by the monkeys. He sniffs all along the pathway leading away from the cottages. Next, he leads the way around the periphery of the parking lot, up the bank, to the foot of a tall tree. 

Yesterday, Kobi insisted on going around the cottage and he led the way. We tracked the monkeys to the embankment behind the cottages. He refused to leave all the while looking into the bushes. Suddenly, he sprang towards the bushes and barked. Several monkey raced into the trees. By walking with Kobi the Monkey Tracker, I am appreciating nature, both flora and fauna in Hakusan. When he barks at 3 am, I wonder what more lies in the bushes and forests and roams our campus at night. Kobi might help me find out!

私の名前はポーリン・ベアードです。いつも忙しく動き回っているので、白山麓キャンパスでの生活に退屈な日はありません。英語を教えている時以外は、よく飼い犬のコビと近所の散策をしています。

コビは白山麓キャンパス唯一の人間ではない住人です。マルチーズとポメラニアンのミックスで、年齢は１０歳です。散歩が大好きで、毎日走り回っています。毎朝一緒に散歩をして、運動、きれいな空気、ビタミンDを確保しています。朝７時前、３０分ほど歩道を走ったり歩いたりして、郵便局までの道のりを往復します。早朝にはサイクリング、ウォーキング、ランニング、ツーリングを楽しんでいる方とすれ違います。時々手を振ってくれる方もいます。

夕方は、道路を挟んで向かいの道の駅近くのドッグランで時間を過ごしています。白山麓まで長いドライブをして休憩をしている家族とその犬によく会います。おかげでコビは様々な犬と友達になれて、人見知りをしなくなりました。私も新しい人間の友達ができます。

季節も春になり、近隣の住民が畑仕事や田植えを始めました。コビを触ったり話しかけたりするおばあちゃんがたくさんいるので、良い癒しとなっているようです。コビも少し日本語を覚えたような気がします。本当に賢い子ですね。

コビのおかげで、新しい趣味ができました。「モンキートラッキング」です。説明しましょう。革ひもをつないでコビとコテージを出ます。階段を下りるとすぐ、コビが走り出して、猿たちが残した何かを見つけて匂いを嗅ぎます。コテージ近くの小道を進んでいき、駐車場周辺から川べり、最後に高い木の根元に到着します。

先日、コビがコテージの裏へ回りたがったので、ついていきました。コテージ裏の川べりまで追跡しましたが、コビが一向にその場を離れようとせず、しきりに茂みの中を探っていました。突然、彼が茂みに向かって吠えながら飛び掛かり、何匹かの猿が木の上へ逃げていきました。「モンキートラッカー」のコビと一緒に散歩していると植物などの自然だけではなく、野生の動物に会うこともできるのです。朝の３時に彼が吠えると、いったい何が近くの茂みの中に隠れているのだろうと考えます。コビと一緒にいればいつか解明できるかもしれませんね！
