Brrr. It’s getting cold, but it’s going to be exciting! Winter Camp is starting next week, and I’ll be leading the Drone Programming experience! We started using drones during last Summer Camp by manually controlling them and taking aerial videos that the students later used in their presentations.
This time we will program the drones to fly automatically indoors. I have some obstacle courses for the campers to try out and hopefully we can end with an autonomous drone race! But 1st, the drones need some time recovering in the “hospital”.
Luckily, we have some great teachers here who can help nurse the drones and get them back up again. They are very hard-working drones. We also use them to teach programming in our Computer Skills 2B classes, so they pretty much are used to “hospital” visits.

ぶるる。寒いですね。でも楽しいことが待っています！来週からウィンターキャンプがスタートし、私がドローン・プログラミング教室のリーダーを務めることになります！去年のサマーキャンプからドローン空撮をして、プレゼンテーション用に編集する活動をしています。
今回はドローンをプログラムして、屋内で自動飛行を行います。今年のキャンプ参加者のためにいくつか障害物も用意していて、できれば自動ドローンレースをやりたいと考えています！ただし、その前にドローンたちには「病院」に行ってもらわなくてはなりません。
ラッキーなことに、この学校にはドローンを元気にできる素晴らしい先生がたくさんいます。このドローンたちは働き者で、コンピュータースキルズIIBの授業でプログラミングを教える時にも使います。なので、「病院送り」は日常茶飯事なのです。

Hi everyone, its Ryan again! Today I’d like to talk about one of the highlights of November, the school’s Sports Festival (球技大会).
On 11/16, the S class students travelled down the mountain to compete with their classmates in the school’s annual Sports Festival. This year, the S1 and S2 students combined forces in badminton, basketball, and dodgeball to compete against the upperclassmen.
The S class teams faced tough opposition against bigger, stronger, and more experienced students, but they still fought hard. Their tenacity and enthusiasm were impressive, and the underclassmen were able to win many matches against their seniors. Ultimately, S class teams were able to secure 5th place in both the basketball and dodgeball tournaments.
Results aside, the festival was a good opportunity for the students to break up the monotony of their schoolwork while working together with their classmates. The students enjoyed their chance to get moving and test their skills while being supported and cheered on by their friends and cleverly took advantage of the nearby bookstore to purchase the latest volumes of their favorite manga and light novels.
In the end, the Sports Festival was a great experience for all the students. The only complaint that anyone seems to have is that they weren’t able to stop at McDonald’s on the way back!

やあ、みんな！ライアンだよ！今日は11月にあった球技大会のハイライトを紹介していきます。
11月16日、Ｓ科の学生が恒例の球技大会に出場するために山を下りました。今年はS1とS2の学生がひとつのチームとなってバドミントン、バスケットボール、ドッジボールの種目で先輩たちと対決しました。
Ｓ科が相対するチームは自分たちより身体が大きく、力が強く、経験値も勝る上級生たちでしたが、必死に食らいつきました。その粘り強さと根性は目を見張るものがあり、年下にもかかわらず先輩に勝利する試合がたくさんありました。結果的にＳ科はバスケットボールとドッジボールのトーナメントで5位に入賞することができました。
結果はさておき、球技大会のおかげで毎日の学業から離れて仲間と力を合わせる良い機会となりました。身体を動かして、友達に応援されつつ自分の力を試すことを楽しみました。また、ちゃっかり近くの本屋で好きな漫画の最新刊やライトノベルを購入する気転も見せました。
球技大会は全学生にとって素晴らしい体験となりました。唯一聞こえた文句は帰り道でマクドナルドに寄れなかったことです！

November 29, 2019 Soba Festival
A few weeks ago, there was a soba festival here in Hakusan. At the festival, they had a variety of delicious local foods. There were many stands selling soba, beef, pork, takoyaki, melonpan, oysters, and even expensive Noto beef! I got to try deer meat for the first time in the form of a sausage!
The ICT students were helping at the festival as well! The second year students worked on Saturday and the first year students worked on Sunday.
When I went on Sunday, I saw many of the students working hard at a variety of tasks, including guiding cars to vacant parking spaces and emptying and replacing the trash cans when full. It was quite refreshing to see the students in a different setting, as part of the local community! Many students seemed exhausted after the day of work and several told me that it was indeed very hard and tiring work.
I'm glad the students have the chance to participate in local community events and I look forward to seeing such interaction again in the future!

今月の始め、ここ白山麓でそば祭りがありました。そば祭りでは地元の美味しい食べ物がたくさんありました。たくさんの露店が立ち並び、そば、牛肉、豚肉、たこ焼き、メロンパン、牡蠣、高級な能登牛まで！私はソーセージという形で、人生で初めて鹿肉を食べました！
国際高専の学生もお祭りを手伝っていました！土曜日は2年生、日曜日は1年生がボランティアをしました。私が行った日曜日は学生たちが駐車場の整理、ゴミ箱の入れ替えなど様々な業務をこなしており、普段とは違う地元のイベントを手伝う姿が見られて新鮮でした。大変な仕事だったようで、終わったあと疲れたと言っていました。
学生たちがボランティアする機会があってよかったです。これからも地元のイベントに参加する機会が増えることを願っています。

November 21, 2019 手取川ダム見学
現在１年生が履修しているEngineering Context IBでは、エネルギーを題材にした授業が行われています。毎回様々な発電技術や各国のエネルギー政策を取り上げながら、技術には光と影があることを踏まえた技術者倫理を学生たちは学んでいます。
この授業の一環で、白山麓キャンパスの近くにあるJPower手取川第一発電所の見学を行いました。この見学会は今年で２回目ですが、年々バージョンアップされています。JPowerの田中所長から、最初にダムカードが配られ、ダムの分類と手取川ダムの特徴をわかりやすく解説して頂きました。手取川ダムは日本で４番目のロックフィル型ダムで、運転開始から４０年、水力発電のみならず洪水調整、上水道用水、工業用水など様々な役割を担っています。１時間ほどの講義の後、ダムの上部に移動し、巨大なダムの迫力を体感しました。気温が低く小雨が降る生憎の天気でしたが、美しい紅葉に彩られた手取湖を眺めながら、ユーモア溢れる田中所長のお話を楽しく聴講することができました。

In the first-year student's "Engineering Context IB" class, we are currently studying about energy. Each class we pick up various power generation technology and different countries' energy policies, and discuss the good and bad of technological advancement from an ethical stand point.
Recently, we took a trip to the JPower Tedori River Dam 1 near the Hakusanroku campus. This was our second visit to the dam. However, it is evolving each year. First, Mr. Tanaka, the chief manager of JPower, distributed dam cards and gave a lecture about different types of dams and the characteristics of Tedori River Dam. Tedori River Dam is the fourth rock-fill dam in Japan and has served not only as a water-power generator, but also as adjustment for floods, and provider for waterworks and construction water. After the lecture, we moved to the top of the huge dam to see the spectacular view. Sadly, it was chilly and drizzling, but we enjoyed the beautiful panorama of Tedori Lake decorated with colored autumn mountains as we listened to Mr. Tanaka's humorous explanation.

Hello everyone, in my free time I like to travel to famous sightseeing spots in the area around Hakusanroku. A little while ago I went and traveled the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine route. It is accessible from Toyama station (about 30 minutes by shinkansen from Kanazawa Station), and is a series of trains, busses and cable cars that takes you from Toyama, up to Mt. Tateyama, across to the Kurobe Dam, and finally down into Nagano. The whole crossing takes 9-12 hours one-way, but is well worth the time. As we move into winter there is a famous “snow corridor” (Yuki-no-otani) that you can walk through that looks like a canyon cut out of the snow! Why not visit it sometime?

皆さん、こんにちは。私は休日を利用して白山麓近辺の有名な観光地を旅行するのが好きです。少し前になりますが、立山黒部アルペンルートへ足を運びました。富山駅（金沢駅から新幹線で約30分）からスタートし、電車、バス、ケーブルカーを乗り継いで立山を登り、黒部ダムを渡って、長野まで下るルートです。片道9～12時間くらいかかりますが、それだけの時間をかけてでも行く価値があります。冬に入りますとあの有名な雪の大谷を通ることができます。行ってみてはいかがでしょうか。

高専祭の開催やその詳細などいくつかの話題はすでにホームページ等にて紹介されていますが、改めて今年度は[Connect]をテーマに、高専・工大がキャンパスを共有して行われました。テーマに沿ったかのように、学科、学年、部活などの垣根を超えた[Connect]が多くの場面で見られました。その中で、学校と保護者の[Connect]が力強く見られたのが、高専祭名物の「お餅つき」です。日曜日のみの１日限定での開催となりますが、長蛇の列が並ぶほどの人気を毎年みせ、数時間で300個から400個の売り上げを出しました。このお餅つきは日本の食文化に繋がる伝統行事であり、国際色豊かな本校でもこういった日本の文化を大事にしていければと思います。また、技術の発展で、機械でついたお餅も十分においしいかとは思いますが、昔ながらの「気持ち」と「力」のこもったつきたてのお餅は格別のおいしさだったと思います。
前日からもち米の下準備を用意した役員の皆さん、当日は早朝より参加し2キロもある杵を何百回も振りかざしたお父様方、あんこと黄粉で絶妙の味を引き出したお母様方、また杵や臼等を貸してくださった教職員の方々、ありがとうございました。

There are already some articles about the "Kosensai" on the website, but I would like to talk some more about our school festival. This year's Kosensai was subtitled "Connect" and was a collaboration between ICT and KIT. As if to fulfil this theme, there were sites of connection between various departments, ages, and clubs. One good example of a strong connection between the school and guardians is the annual "mochi-tsuki (sticky rice pounding)." It was only held on Sunday. However, it was so popular that there was a long line to buy the mochi, which we sold about 300 to 400 packages in a few hours. "Mochi-tsuki" is a Japanese tradition and I hope ICT will continue to cherish local Japanese cultures like this even as we transform into an international community. Also, technological advancements make automated mochi pounding possible, but I believe the mochi we made with our hearts and hands tasted much better and special.
I would like to thank the staff who prepared the rice, the fathers who pounded the rice several hundred times from early morning, the mothers who flavored the mochi with anko and kinako, and the teachers who lent us the hammer and mortar. Thank you so much.

On October 1st, Koutaro Sugi, Daiko Kato and Shuntaro Sato from the year 1 Listening/Speaking class interviewed members of the community class as part of an ongoing Oral History Project for 15 minutes. Students came up with and asked questions about what this area was like before ICT. Specific questions included, “What was here (ICT Campus) before “Kanpo-no-yado” was built,” “What was here before Hakusan campus and the Sena Roadside Station (Michinoeki Sena) were built,” “How was the atmosphere around here before the Hakusanroku campus was built,” and “How has the atmosphere changed by the building of Hakusanroku campus.” Students also asked about what they wanted to come to Hakusan next.
The members of the community class were eager to participate and had a lot to say about what was here before ICT, what they want to come to this neighborhood and how monkeys get into their gardens and eat the daikons. The students found the interviews interesting and fun and Daiko said he would like to do this again.
The interviews were conducted in Japanese, but students will record a 2 to 3 minute summary of the interview in English. This summary will focus on what they found most interesting and be supported with photos. This is a new class project and is inspired by oral histories such as Studs Terkel, “Working,” The Foxfire Project and Junichi Saga, “Memories of Silk and Straw”

10月1日、1年の杉晃太朗さん、加藤大虎さん、佐藤俊太朗さんがリスニング・スピーキングのオーラル・ヒストリー・プロジェクトとしてコミュニティクラス（地域の方々を呼んだ英会話教室）のメンバーに15分間のインタビューを行いました。学生たちは国際高専が建つ前のこの地域について質問を考え、「かんぽの里が建つ前は何がありましたか？」「白山麓キャンパスが建つ前はどんな雰囲気でしたか？」「白山麓キャンパスが建ってからの雰囲気はどう変わりましたか？」などの質問をしました。また、次に出来て欲しい施設についても聞きました。
コミュニティクラスの方々は快くインタビューに応じてくれて、白山麓キャンパスが建つ前のことや、地域に来てほしいもの、猿が庭の大根を食べてしまうことなどを話してくれました。学生たちもインタビューが面白かったようで、大虎さんはまたやりたいとまで言っていました。
インタビューは日本語でしたが、学生たちはその内容を英語で2～3分口頭でまとめたものを録画するのが課題でした。まとめには面白かった点や写真なども載せてあります。この活動はStuds Terkelの"Working"、The Foxfire Project、佐賀純一氏の霞ヶ浦風土記などの口述歴史を参考に計画しました。

October 31, 2019 “School festival”
Hi everyone. On 19th and 20th of this month, we celebrated our school festival. This year, the festival was special, because KIT and ICT held their festival at the same days and in shared spaces. It was a good idea to connect and link out the two schools. This kind of connection will build up a strong relation between the students of both schools, as well as teachers and staff. My family and I enjoyed and participated in many events. One of the most interesting events was the flower arrangement event. My children enjoyed learning how to arrange their flower pots. After they finished, they could take their pots back home. I saw many beautiful arrangements, some of them made by students and others made by teachers. Below this article I show you some of those amazing pots. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to the student councils of both schools, as well as teachers and staff who supported them.

こんにちは、皆さん。今月の19日と20日、学園祭が行われました。今年は金沢工業大学と国際高専の学園祭が同じ会場で同日開催されるスペシャルな学園祭となりました。これは両校を繋げる良いアイデアだったと思います。このような機会を通じて学校のみならず、両校の教員とスタッフが絆を深めることができたと思います。私と家族も様々なイベントに参加してエンジョイしてきました。1番楽しかったのは生け花体験です。子供たちも初めての生け花を楽しんでいました。行けた花は持ち帰ることもできました。国際高専の学生や先生によって生けられた美しい花がたくさん飾ってありました。写真を載せるのでぜひ素晴らしい生け花をご覧ください。最後に、両校の学生会と支援してくださった先生とスタッフに感謝を述べたいと思います。

October 23, 2019 Spending Long Fall Nights Watching Movies

Summer has gone and fall has come to our campus. In fall, the nights are long, dark, quiet, cool, and with a lot of stars in the sky. People say that the fall nights are the best time to study or to read books. However, we don’t want to spend the fall nights only studying, we need fun sometimes also. So I recommend to you a kind of entertainment for the fall nights: watching movies.
You can experience many things by watching movies: life, friendship, happiness, sadness, loneliness, anger, history, fashion, music, etc. You can also travel many places in the movies. You observe many types of people or lives in the movies.
Today, I would like to recommend seven movies that I think are good for ICT students. Most of these movies are not new but good movies don’t have to be new. And you know how old I am.
The seven recommended movies are as follows:
- Billy Elliot（リトルダンサー）
- Nuovo Cinema Paradiso（ニューシネマパラダイス）
- Plein Soleil（太陽がいっぱい）
- The Shining（シャイニング）
- City Lights（街の灯）
- E.T.（E.T.）
- Chariots of Fire（炎のランナー）
Billy Elliot is the movie about a boy who is devoted to ballet and tries to be a professional ballet dancer. The boy’s acting is marvelous. Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is an Italian movie. The story is about a middle aged movie director’s memory of his childhood and his friendship with a movie projector operator. It is a beautiful story.
Plein Soleil is a French and Italian movie released in 1960. The main character, Tom, kills his rich friend and tries to take the place of the friend. He steals all of his friend’s estate and girlfriend. Young Alain Delon (French actor) is great and his fashion in the movie is still cool today.
I think the Shining is one of the best horror movies that has ever been made. It was written by Stephen King and stars Jack Nicolson. A man who was hired as a hotel manager is possessed by the evil sprit of the former hotel owner. It is scary and there are several scenes that are startling.
Charles Chaplin directed and stared in City Lights in 1931. A homeless man sacrifices himself and helps a poor flower girl pay for her eye operation. The last scene is touching.
E.T. is an interesting story about some children’s friendship with a child extra-terrestrial (E.T.) The E.T. is so cute and the story is full of adventures and dreams. The movie was a big hit all over the world in 1982.
Chariots of Fire is a story about Cambridge University students who were track and field athletes and participated in the Olympics in Paris in 1924. Whenever I hear the words “Chariots of Fire”, I always remember a piece of music in the movie “titles”. This movie has a lot of beautiful places such as the Cambridge University campus, the town of Cambridge, and fields of Scotland, etc.
I hope ICT students will have a chance to watch the movies introduced in this article at the ICT campus during the fall nights.
I indeed love movies. I have been a movie fan for more than 50 years since I was a junior high school student. From movies, I have learned about many kinds of lives, loves, ideas, languages, cultures, and people. I’m sure the movies have helped open my eyes toward many things.
The fall nights at Hakusanroku campus are long, dark, quiet, cool, and with a lot of stars in the sky. It will be a great time to learn many things from movies.
秋の夜長を映画を観て過ごす

夏が去り、私たちのキャンパスに秋がやってきました。秋は夜が長く、暗く、静かで、涼しくそして空に星がきらめきます。秋の夜は勉強するのに最適だと人は言います。しかし、せっかくの秋の夜を勉強だけで過ごしたくありません。時にはお楽しみも必要でしょう。私は秋の夜長の娯楽として映画鑑賞をおすすめします。
映画を観ることで様々なことを経験できます。たとえば、人生、友情、幸せ、悲しみ、さびしさ、怒り、歴史、流行、音楽などなどです。映画の中でいろんな所に旅行できます。映画の中でいろいろな人々や人生を観察することができます。
今日、私は7本の映画をすすめしたいと思います。これらの映画はICTの学生に良い作品だと思います。私が推薦するほとんどの映画は新作ではありません。新しい映画が素晴らしいとは限りませんし、私が何歳かは皆さん知っているでしょう。以下が7本の映画です。

Billy Elliotはバレエにのめりこみ、そしてプロのダンサーになろうとする少年の物語です。この少年の演技力が見事です。
Nuovo Cinema Paradisoはイタリア映画で中年の映画監督が子供時代の映画上映技師との友情を思い出すという美しい物語です。
Plein Soleilはフランス、イタリアの合作で1960年の作品です。主人公のトムは金持ちの友人を殺害し彼になりかわり友人の財産を横取りするのです。若きアランドロンが素晴らしく彼のファッションは60年後の今でもカッコいいんです。
Shiningは今まで作られたホラー映画の中で最も優れた作品の一つではないかと思います。スティーブンキングの原作でジャックニコルスンが主演しています。ホテルの管理人として雇われた男に元のホテルオーナーの霊がのりうつるんです。恐いですしドキッとするシーンがいくつかあります。
チャールズチャップリンは1931年にCity Lightsを制作、主演しました。ある浮浪者が自己を犠牲にして貧しい花売り娘を助け目の手術費を作るという物語です。ラストシーンが感動的です。
E.T.はおもしろい物です。子供と地球外生物E.T.との友情です。そのE.T.が可愛く物語は冒険と夢にあふれています。1982年の大ヒット作品です。
Chariots of Fireはケンブリッジ大学の学生で1924年のパリオリンピックに出場した陸上競技選手たちの物語です。私はこの映画の題名を聞くたびに映画の主題曲”titles"を思い出します。この映画にケンブリッジ大学のキャンパス、街並み、そしてスコットランドの野原などの美しい光景がたのしめます。
秋が夜長のキャンパスでICTの学生が今日紹介した映画をみる機会があるといいのですが。私は映画が大好きです。中学生の頃からの映画ファンなのでもう50年以上になるでしょうか。映画から様々な人生、愛、考え方、言葉、文化、そして人々を学んできました。映画は色々なところに私の目を開くことに役立ちました。
白山麓キャンパスの秋の夜は長く、暗く、静かで、涼しく、そして空には星がきらめきます。映画から色々なことを学ぶ絶好のチャンスです。

萩の花 尾花葛花 撫子の花 女郎花 また藤袴 朝貌の花

こんにちは。国語科のＫＴＢです。秋も深まって参りました。
下の写真をご覧ください。手前に花を咲かせているのは秋の七草の一つ、藤袴（フジバカマ）です。乾燥すると桜餅のような甘い香りを放ち、万葉の時代から親しまれてきた花ですが、今では準絶滅危惧種に指定される貴重な花です。写真の右上にもご注目ください。藤袴の蜜を求めて飛来するアサギマダラです。藤袴の蜜を選んで吸うのには理由があります。蜜に含まれるピロリジジンアルカロイド（毒性を持つ）を摂取することで鳥に捕食されないようにするため、また、ピロリジジンアルカロイドから雄蝶がフェロモンを作るためです。
この写真は、9月24日に白山麓キャンパス向かいの畑で撮影したものですが、今はもうアサギマダラたちはここにはいません。彼らは旅する蝶なのです。5月の終わりに南方から飛来した蝶たちが産卵して短い生涯を終えます。そして、ここで生まれ育って蜜をたっぷり吸った蝶たちが、10月の初めに産卵のために南へ向かって飛び立ちます。『白山のアサギマダラ』（石川県白山自然保護センター、2016年）によりますと、このあたりでマーキングした蝶が、京都や山口、高知、鹿児島、沖縄などで再捕獲されています。最も遠かったのは、1857ｋｍ離れた日本の最西端、沖縄の与那国島だそうです。
昨年には、ネイチャー＆アドベンチャー部の尾張由輝也コーチのお父様の尾張勝也氏がこちらでマーキングした蝶を、1,000ｋｍ彼方の喜界島において、ご夫婦で再捕獲なさっています。素敵な話ですね。
ネイチャー＆アドベンチャー部でもアサギマダラのマーキングは企画していたのですが、残念ながら台風15号のために中止となってしまいました。来年は部員たちがマーキングした蝶たちを、南の島で誰かに再捕獲していただけると嬉しいですね。

Hello, KTB from the Japanese department here. Autumn is upon us at Hakusanroku.
Check out the pictures above. The flower in the foreground is called Fujibaka (藤袴), one of the "Aki no Nanakusa" (seven plants of autumn). When dried, it has a sweet scent like cherry blossom mochi and is a historically popular flower since the age of Manyo. Currently, it is one of the nearly endangered species list. Notice the butterfly in the photo. It's an "Asagimadara" sucking nectar from the Fujibaka flower. The Asagimadara butterfly chooses to suck Fujibaka nectar for a reason. The pyrrolizidine alkaloid (poisonous) within the nectar prevents birds from eating it. Also, male butterflies use it to create pheromone.
These pictures were taken on September 24 at the field across from the campus. However, there are no more Asagimadara in this area now. They are a traveling specie. They fly up from the south in the end of May to lay their eggs and live out their short lives. Then the Asagimadara born here will feed on the nectar and fly off to lay their eggs in the south. According to "Asagimadara in Mt. Hakusan" (Ishikawa Prefecture Mt. Hakusan Nature Preservation Center, 2016), butterflies marked here have been seen in Kyoto, Yamaguchi, Kochi, Kagoshima, and Okinawa. The farthest recorded one was found in Yonaguni-jima, the west farthest island of Japan, 1857 kilometers away.
Last year, Katsuya Owari, the father of Yukiya Owari, our Nature & Adventure club coach, marked a butterfly here and recaptured the same butterfly in Kikai-jima island with his wife, more than 1000 kilometers away; an astounding story.
We planned an Asagimadara marking event in the Nature & Adventure club but it was sadly canceled due to Typhoon No.15. I hope next year someone on a southern island will find butterflies we set loose here.
