July 28, 2021

KTB, coach of the N&A Club here. The N&A Club held our annual Mt. Hakusan climb on July 16 (Fri). We left the Hakusanroku Campus at 5 am and arrived at the starting point (Betto-deai) at 6. After submitting a climbing registration form, we began our climb. This year we chose the more advanced but more beautiful and less crowded Kanko-shindo instead of the Sabo-shindo that we used last year. Student members that participated were Oishi Imaru, Okuyama Mahiro, Kan Kinoshita, Lucas Kusamoto (S1), Katsukata Masamune, Sakei Ryo, and the captain Nakazato Yuma (S2).

Kanko-shindo is a path along the mountain ridge, so there is always a beautiful view and a cool breeze to push you along. The sweet fragrance of Japanese lilies (language of flower: elegant) surrounded us as we pushed on steadily up the mountain. We rested at Tono-ga-ike shelter hut, took a group photo at Mida-ga-hara at 10:30, and arrived at Murodo at 11 o’clock. Students happily dug into their packed lunch prepared by the cafeteria and cup noodles their brought with them. Initially, we planned to leave at noon, but the students were so eager to get going, so we began our final assent at 11:40. By 12:30, everyone had reached the peak with blue skies and bustling white clouds and showed big smiles for the camera.

To go nice on our knees, we chose the less steep Sabo-shindo on the way down. The weather forecast predicted some rain so we came prepared but never saw a single drop the whole way. Instead, students’ skin was red from sun burn. Still, two invincible students (Lucas and Yuma) had enough strength for a three hour bike ride to the ocean the very next day.

July 21, 2021 Competitions

The Olympic games will start in few days. July 23rd is the starting day of one of the most internationally exciting sports events. It is especially exciting this time because it will be held in Japan. Olympics were canceled during world war II. In 1940, both summer and winter Olympics were scheduled to be held in Japan. Tokyo Olympics takes special importance. After the tsunami and the nuclear disaster of Fukushima, Japan has seen an economic recession for a while. That would make the games symbolic of a reestablishment of Japan.

I am thrilled that it was not canceled, even though it comes a year later than planned without spectators. Besides it being a good chance for family gatherings, it is always inspiring for me to watch athletes go through all types of feelings. Athletes participate in Olympics with different motivations and goals. After four, or five years, in this case, some athletes are satisfied and proud of the fact that they were qualified to join in and represent their countries. Others are eager to win medals and raise their country names and flags. Moreover, some athletes are worried about their World or Olympic records. They are competing against their previous selves and other athletes. Why do they have to do all the hard work and go through that kind of stress? I always wanted to understand it and see it from their perspectives.

I thought of asking someone with a similar experience. So, I talked to two of our year two students who recently participated in design and science competitions. I asked them about their reasons and motivations for participating and if they thought it is worth going through all the stress and mixed feelings.

Shii Yamazaki, a 2020 Grand Prize winner of Autodesk Fusion 360 Student Design, participated again this year in the same national competition held by Auto Desk Learning Partener. Shii told me that although she was happy to get the semi grand prize again this year, winning was not her motivation in participating in the competition. Talking about her reasons to join, Shii told me that she enjoyed designing in general and wanted to share her designs with others and see theirs.

Afaf Alaa is the first student in our college to participate in an international science competition. She participated in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Competition. The competition has three stages of judgments, and the final results will be announced in November this year. Afaf told me that she had to spend two continuous months making a 3- min film that teaches a science concept or topic. “Although it was difficult and exhausting, I learned a lot and gained new experiences,” Afaf said. For reasons to participate in this competition, she said that she wanted to represent her school, her community as a female engineer-to-be in the STEM society. It helped her gain a lot of confidence.

Now I understand why people choose to participate in competitions. They want to learn more. They gain resilience through competing. It helps them understand their abilities and how much they can add to their experiences and improve over time. It seems satisfying and worth all the stress and hardship. You can see the designs made by Shii, and the film made by Afaf on our ICT Facebook Page.

The third year students visited Dokosan-Yokoji temple as fieldwork to practice Zen meditation for their Global Life and Culture class.

Yokoji is a temple of the Soto school. After walking through the wooden sanmon (main gate), we passed many Buddhist monks and I could sense the students nervousness. We learned basic manners from Mr. Manjo such as the correct hand positions for praying and meditating, and how to walk. Then, we returned to the main temple and listened to a lecture about the correct mindset and how to sit. Finally, we moved to the monastery that holds the Buddhist statue Monju-Bosatsu (文殊菩薩座像) and meditated for forty minutes. The students' goal was to find peace in their heart by sitting while facing the wall, appreciating the sound of the bell and birds, and concentrating on their posture and breath.

Some comments by the students after the meditation:
Inoue-san said "My legs are stiff. I need to do this more often" with a wryly smile.
Hatanaka-san looked refreshed and said "It only felt like 10 minutes"
Sato-san was still contemplating the experience and voiced the question "I wonder what the purpose of sitting is?"
Kato-san, who requested "Don't hesitate to strike me harder when its my turn" later remarked that "It hurt A LOT" with a big smile on his face as always.

Afterward, we drank tea and ate sweats, and listened to Majo-san talk about how life is born from life, words exist, therefore "I" am, and that "I" exists only once. Also the following haiku:

careful watching_
shepherd’s purses in bloom
under the hedge

a sound of a frog
jumping into water_
the old pond

Both are famous haikus by Basho. We were given the homework to contemplate what he wanted to convey with them.

It was a short field trip, but the students were able to leave their busy routine to appreciate nature and history, and observe themselves within.

July 13, 2021 JetBot in Engineering Context

Hello, it’s Jonathan, the camera man. Today I would like to introduce an activity that the second-year students have been working on in Engineering Context class. Perhaps you have seen some of these pictures on our twitter account with small robot cars. These are open-source AI robot platforms called “Jetbots.” They have a NVIDIA Jetson Nano microcomputer on a chassis with various sensors, and can be programed to be controlled or move on their own.

JetBots are a new activity from this year in the Engineering Context class, introduced by Hayato Ogawa sensei. Activities such as programming, robotics using Lego EV3, and various IT technology are becoming common even in public schools nowadays, and Hayato sensei was looking for a more advanced hands-on project that involved both mechanical and AI technology. ICT and KIT have worked with Raspberry Pi in the past and Hayato sensei had always wanted to try the more powerful microcomputer Jetson Nano. It is beginner friendly with many easy examples to follow. However, the hurdle that ICT students have to overcome is the English reading. JetBots only need small changes to the program to make them work, but the online instructions are in high-school to university level English, which some of the students struggle to fully understand. Teachers help the students with this and conduct quizzes to make sure they are following along.

In this portion of the Engineering Context class, students each receive one JetBot, which they 1) learn to program and move, 2) make a data set, and 3) create a collision avoidance program. This is done by using the camera attached to the JetBot to take pictures of obstacles (the red cones you see in the pictures) and teaching the program to turn away or go through them if there is an opening. The final assignment is for students to submit a video of their robot safely maneuvering around the cones.

This activity is similar to the problem-solving activity students did in Engineering Design class, in that it is also a hands-on based project. However, one large difference is that the JetBot activity is a topic “given” to the students. This is good practice for the students if they enter industry after graduating for ICT. Not only is it an introduction to mechanical engineering and AI, but it teaches them the importance of accurate/good quality data and how to distinguish useful and unnecessary information. “In addition, they might work on automated cars in the future. In that case, they may realize that the accuracy of their data could save lives” Hayato sensei remarked. When I asked his impression on this new JetBot activity, Hayato sensei said “The English reading is difficult for some students, but the guidance of the teachers helps them by emphasizing key points they are looking for.” Once again, I believe the global faculty at ICT will always be one of our strong points.

Hello, I'm Shii Yamazaki, a second-year student of the Department of Science and Technology. Last month, we visited Yamadachi-kai as part of the Engineering Design class. We listened to Arimoto CEO's lecture and experienced sheep shearing. The thing I remember the most from Arimoto-san's lecture was why he decided to start Yamadachi-kai's sheep business. I have lived in Ishikawa for sixteen years, but I never thought about its good points or how the Ichikawa brand could grow. However, Arimoto-san gave the reasons "Ishikawa has no special livestock", "there is no place to play in Hakusanroku", and "sheep are unaffected by wild animals and snow." Hearing this, I realized that it was different from any other local speciality or tradition in Ishikawa prefecture has tried or forced on to tourists. I felt like it is a new perspective that tourists can relate to.

Also as Arimoto-san said, not only are statuses such as animal welfare important to create a new brand, but also design, logo, and concept. I believe the suggestions that Afaf proposed have a lot of demand too.

The sheep shearing looked easy at first, but was actually very difficult because the clipper was heavy and the vibration transmitted to me. However, it felt good when I could smoothly shear the wool off the sheep after I had a lot of practice and got used to it. Also, I fell in love with the sheep and wanted to be become better at it. I want to try again in the future.

Nice to see you all again, Jomkit here. It’s been a while since my last journal entry, and by now all the snow and ice has been replaced with rain and thunder. But I suppose the thunder was here in the winter too, strange thing. Where I come from in the US, thunder during a snow storm is considered a rarity, so when I heard it thunder and saw the sky light up in the middle of a blizzard last winter I was shocked to put it simply. What I would consider the end of the world however, apparently native Ishikawa residents consider everyday business.

In any case, inspired by the seasonal transition from white to green, I started growing a little indoor garden from where I live on campus. I think it’s very fascinating watching the life cycle of a plant from seed to full maturity. As soon as I was able to start driving myself around, I began making trips to the local Komeri down the road as well as the DCM Kahma home center in town to pick up seeds and other tools for gardening. I chose plants with no particular theme other than how nice they looked and maybe their ability to repel insects. For instance, I planted marigolds, peppermint, and various other herbs because I read about their use in common insect repellants.

In an unintentional way, I also ended up conducting an informal experiment on how being placed indoors vs. outdoors affects potted plants. The marigolds and herbs I planted on the balcony grew more quickly and flowered much sooner than the ones I grew indoors. I can’t wait to see more of my garden bloom, partly because the plants that have already flowered are gorgeous but also because I have forgotten which seeds I planted in which pots.

Hello everyone!

It has already been more than a year since the pandemic has started. This has created many challenges for everyone on our planet and for our school, including teachers and students alike. However, we are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines coming. Here is to hoping that everyone can go back to their normal lives by the end of this year and we can put this endeavor behind us.

On a personal note, this will be my last Hakusanroku journal as I will be leaving Japan in September to go back to my home country of Canada. I will have been living in Japan for nine years in August and it is time for me to start a new chapter in my life. I cannot even begin to enumerate and describe all of the incredible experiences I have had in Japan, first in Shimane prefecture, then in Ishikawa prefecture, with some travelling in between. They will stay with me for my whole life, as I will often look back fondly on them. Of course, I plan to return to Japan from time to time at least to visit and see the wonderful people I have met here. I would like to thank the faculty, staff and students of International College of Technology who all have made my time here at this school wonderful. When I first arrived at this school, I had many questions about many things, but everybody has always been kind and helped me when I needed it. I am very grateful for that.

Starting next term, the biology classes will be given by a new member of our staff, Dorsaf Gatri. She arrived here in June and I’m convinced that the students will be in very good hands!

Thank you to everyone again and thank you for reading! May our paths cross sometime, somewhere in the future.
