Hakusanroku
白山麓キャンパス
With the lofty green mountains in the background, I walk to the office with a cup of coffee in my hand, breathing in the fresh cool air. This is a refreshing new experience for me, coming from a country filled with concrete buildings and skyscrapers. I am Kah Keng (K.K.) and I am from the city state of Singapore. I am one of the teachers who has the opportunity to live and work at the new Hakusanroku campus.
To be able to work and live with nature itself invigorates me, not only at work but also in my personal time with my family. We have enjoyed watching the ever changing colors of the mountains as they have turned from white in Winter to the fresh green of Spring. We look forward to the rest of the year as the canvas of nature changes and brings us new sights of all its wonders.
I hope that the students will benefit from studying and living at this unique campus, and allow nature to renew our senses, rejuvenate our minds and revitalize our quest for knowledge. Afterall, it is said that nature unlocks the imagination and inspires creativity. Perhaps, being away from the hustle and bustle of city life will allow us to focus on the development of the self, the learning and practice of new skills and knowledge, and the enjoyment of community life.

今朝も、雄大な緑の山々を眺めながら、コーヒー片手にオフィスへと向かいました。澄んだ冷たい空気は、コンクリートや高層ビルが立ち並ぶ国から来た私にとっては新鮮です。私の名前はカー・ケン（K.K.）、出身はシンガポール、白山麓キャンパスに住んでいる新任教員のひとりです。
自然の中で生活していると活力が湧いてきます。仕事だけではなく、家族と過ごす私生活もです。移ろいゆく山の色が、冬の白から春の新緑へ変わるのを毎日観察しています。これから自然がこのキャンバスにどんな色を描いてくれるのか楽しみです。 学生たちがこのユニークな環境で学生生活を送ることによって、得るものが多いことを願っています。自然の中で感覚を研ぎ澄ませ、脳を活性化し、より一層知識の探求に臨んで欲しいと思います。昔から自然の中にいると想像力と創造力が解放されると言われています。車の行きかう町中よりも自己開発、新しい知識と技術の修得、そして仲間との交流に集中できるのかもしれません。

Today was ICT’s sports day. First-graders from the Hakusanroku campus and second-to-fifth-graders of the Kanazawa campus gathered to compete in a variety of games. At first, Hakusanroku students were nervous to interact with their seniors, but soon blended in and began to enjoy themselves. I was impressed at how many older students came to chat with our new students. It really helped break the ice.
Hakusanroku students participated in the tug of war, group jump rope, ball toss, and obstacle race. You can check them out in the video. There were all sorts of other games that I look forward to seeing students participate in next year. See you next time.

本日は国際高専の体育祭でした。白山麓キャンパスの１年生と、金沢キャンパスの２～５年生が集まって様々な競技に参加しました。最初、１年生は先輩と交流することに緊張していましたが、すぐに打ち解けることができました。たくさんの先輩が様子を見にきて、話しかけてくれたおかげだと思います。とても面倒見が良くて驚きました。
１年生が参加した競技は、綱引き、大縄跳び、玉入れ、障害物競走です。その様子については、ぜひ動画をご覧ください。来年以降参加することになる多種多様な競技があったので、次回が楽しみです。それでは次回お会いしましょう！

本日は国際高専の体育祭でした。白山麓キャンパスの１年生と、金沢キャンパスの２～５年生が集まって様々な競技に参加しました。最初、１年生は先輩と交流することに緊張していましたが、すぐに打ち解けることができました。たくさんの先輩が様子を見にきて、話しかけてくれたおかげだと思います。とても面倒見が良くて驚きました。

Hi there. This is Maesa and I’m one of the new teachers at the Hakusanroku campus. This semester I help teach the Computer Skills and Design Thinking classes. This past Monday was our first day of classes after Golden Week and as well as our Computer Skills class together. I started to stay after class to help the students with any of the computer applications we use. I’m glad when the students stay since it gives me a chance to interact with them on an individual basis. K.K. sensei and I are assigned to lead the 3D modeling class. Earlier in the school year we asked the students what did they want to create. One of the students suggested creating an iPhone case. Although I enjoyed my Golden Week, I’m happy to be back to work on incorporating the students’ suggestions into the course. I look forward to sharing what I have in store for them.

はじめまして、白山麓キャンパスの新任教員のひとり、メイサと申します。今学期はコンピュータースキルズとデザインシンキングの授業を担当しています。今週の月曜日が連休明け最初の授業日となり、久しぶりのコンピュータースキルズでした。今週から授業後に残って授業で使ったアプリの補習をはじめました。学生が授業後に残ってくれると、もっと個人的に接することができるので嬉しいです。３Dモデリングの授業は私とKK（タン・カー・ケン）先生で教えています。学期のはじめに「何を作りたいか」を学生たちに質問したところ、ひとりがスマホケースを提案してくれました。ゴールデンウィークは楽しかったですが、学生たちの案をカタチにする仕事に戻れてよかったです。今後予定している内容を早く学生たちに伝えたいです。

Afterschool
How did you spend your time afterschool? I bet some people enjoyed playing games with their friends. How about actually making one?
The other day I ran across two students who have launched a long-term project to create a real-life shooting game using infrared laser pistols and headbands. The headbands will detect the infrared laser and notify if the person was hit. Their final goal is hold a student versus teacher tournament on campus. It sounds exciting and I think it’s great that they are motivated to learn about what they are interested in. The project is still in the early stages so I will keep you updated if I hear more. Stay tune.

放課後の過ごし方
放課後はどのように過ごしてましたか？友達とゲームを遊んでいた方もいるのではないでしょうか？では、ゲームを作っていた人はいますか？
先日、放課後の活動として、赤外線を使ったリアルなシューティングゲームを製作する長期プロジェクトを立ち上げた学生２人に出会いました。赤外線レーザーを飛ばすピストルと、それを感知して命中したことを知らせるヘッドバンドを製作するのが狙いです。最終的には量産して、学生対先生の大会を開きたいと彼らは話してくれました。とても面白そうですし、興味があることについて熱心に学ぶのは良いことだと思います。放課後にこんなことができるのは、工学ボーディングスクールならではですね。まだプロジェクトの初期段階なので、進捗があればまたお知らせしたいと思います。またお会いしましょう。

放課後の過ごし方

Learning to process metal
In today's Engineering Design, we learned how to use some of the tools for prototyping. Making a prototype is an important process in the problem-solving process. The class was divided into two groups. One group learned how to use the 3D printer, while the other group learned how to process metal in the Maker Studio. Students used the handsaw, drill, and many other tools to make the final product in picture three. Then, we connected all the metal tablets into a chain. The chain would not work if any of the tablets were manufactured incorrectly. However, as you can see in picture four, they were a perfect match! It's nice to have an end result that you can see and feel good about after all that hard work. I hope to show you more of the 3D printer group in the future. Stay tune.
