伝統工芸士の香月久代さんとスーザン　メイさんを講師にお招きして
約400年前から白山麓に伝わる檜細工のワークショップを１、２年生が体験。

国際高等専門学校では、１、2年生19名の特別活動として、県伝統工芸士の香月久代さんと、香月氏に師事して檜細工の作品作りと情報発信に取り組む白山手取川ジオパーク推進協議会のスーザン・メイさんを講師にお招きし、檜（ヒノキ）細工に関する講義とワークショップを、9月17日（金）13時より、白山麓キャンパスで実施しました。

檜細工は、約400年前に、尾口村深瀬（現在の白山市深瀬）を訪れた旅の僧が農民に檜笠の製法を伝授したことが始まりとされ、1988年に石川県の伝統工芸に指定されています。ヒンナと呼ばれる、檜を薄く細い経木（きょうぎ）にしたものを編む作業は今も手作業で行われ、熟練を要する一方で、従事者のほとんどが高齢者のため、技術の伝承が課題となっています。

スーザンさんによる英語での30分の講義のあと、さっそく、「檜細工コースターの作り方」をもとに、学生たちは、コースターづくりにチャレンジしました。渡されたヒンナはひとり10本。ヒンナは乾いた状態で曲げると折れてしまうため、まず、スプレーで水をかけ、柔らかくしてから織り始めます。日頃、PCを使ったデジタルのものづくりに慣れている学生達ですが、細かい手作業は最初、苦戦をしたようで、織っては解しを繰り返す光景があちこちで観られました。香月さんとスーザンさんは学生たちの進捗状況を観ながら、きめの細かいサポートをひとりひとりに実施。約1時間30分で全員がコースターを完成させました。

「今回みなさんが体験した"網代編み"（あじろあみ）は基本の織り方です。長いヒンナを使えばランチョンマットも作れます」と香月さん。
伝統工芸士から直に学ぶリアルなクラフト体験と、その匠の技に触れられる貴重な機会となりました。

国際高専では、SDGsで地方創生を目指す授業を教育の中心軸に据え、座学だけでなく、地域の方々との世代を超えたコミュニケーションを行いながらながら、学生が地域産業や伝統芸能、伝統工芸に触れられる機会を多く設けています。このたびの檜細工の講義・体験教室もその一環で行われるもので、昨年に続き2回目となります。
今回は手取川ジオパーク推進協議会が連携しているタイのジオパーク推進地域ともzoomで繋ぎ、講義の様子をオンラインで配信しました。

On September 17 (Fri), nineteen first- and second-year students participated in a “cypress weaving” seminar/workshop conducted by Ishikawa prefectural traditional craftsman, Hisayo Katsuki and Susan May, who belongs to the Hakusan-Tedori Geopark Promotion Council and studies cypress weaving under Kastuki-san while making and promoting works of her own. The seminar and workshop was held at 1:00 pm at the Hakusanroku Campus.

Cypress weaving is said to originate in Hakusanroku when a traveling monk taught the people of Fukase in Oguchi village (current Hakusan city, Fukase) how to weave an umbrella 400 years ago. In 1988, cypress weaving was certified as an official traditional craft of Ishikawa prefecture. The process of weaving thin cypress strips called “hinna” by hand has continued to this day. However, most of its successors are old age and the sustainability of the technique is becoming an issue.

After Susan-san’s 30 minute lecture in English, students began weaving a coaster. Each student received ten strips of “hinna”, which they sprayed water on before weaving because they break easily when dry. Our young engineers are accustomed to making digital things on their computers, but not so much with their hands, as many of them weaved and undid their work multiple times. Kastuki-san and Susan-san watched the students’ progress and took turns giving them detailed support. Everyone finished their coaster in about an hour and a half.

Katsuki-san explained that “The method we used today is called ‘ajiro-ami’ and is the most basic way of weaving. You can make a placemat if you use longer strips.” It was a valuable experience to learn directly from a traditional craftsman and see her skills.

At ICT, students have the opportunity to experience local industries and traditional arts and crafts, and communicate with different age groups of the community through our education focused on the SDGs and regional revitalization. This cypress weaving workshop is part of that goal and is the second time we have held it at the Hakusanroku Campus since last year. This year we also shared the experience with Thailand’s Geopark Promotional Region, which is associated with Hakusan-tedorigawa Geopark, via Zoom.

N＆A部顧問のKTBです。9月12日（日）にN&A部は瀬波川沢登りを実施しました。瀬波川は白山麓キャンパスから5㎞ほど北を流れる手取川の支流です。手取川本流は白山で崩れた砂が混じって濁りがありますが、瀬波川は澄み切っていてまさに清流です（下の写真で実感していただけると思います）。

部員は12時30分の集合後、白山麓少年自然の家へ移動、ヘルメット、ライフジャケットなどの装備を借りて現地へ向かいます。白山里温泉前の駐車場で下車して川原へ、浅瀬に足を浸したところで、尾張コーチから川中での危険についてレクチャーを受けた後、いよいよ沢登りのスタートです。沢登りではコース取りは自由、岩場を歩いたり、泳いだり（とはいえ水温は18℃、そのうちに震えが止まらなくなります）、ロープをつかんで難所を越えたり、学生たちは思い思いのコースを進みます。やがて、小さなプールに翡翠色の清水をたたえた場所へたどり着きました。

ここが本日一番の景勝スポット。学生たちは次々と岩の上からジャンプ。エメラルドのしぶきを跳ね上げながら水中に身を躍らせました。帰りの車中でフィリップ先生から感想を尋ねられた木下観くんは笑顔で、“The coldest experience of my life.”と答えていました。

It's KTB, the N&A Club supervisor. On September 12 (Sun), the N&A Club held the annual Senami rivier gorge climbing activity. Senami river is about 5 kilometers from the Hakusanroku Campus, and is a tributary to the larger Tedori river.Tedori river is often muddy with sand broken off from Mt. Hakusan, but Senami river is clear and beautiful (as you can see in the pictures above).

Members gathered at 12:30 pm and moved to Hakusanroku Shonen-no-ie to gear up with helmets and lifejackets. When everyone was ready, we drove to the parking lot in front of Hakusanri Onsen and made our descent to the river bed. After getting our feet used to the water, Owari coach gave a lecture about the dangers in the river before we began our journey. There is no set path for gorge climbing. You can walk along the rocky bank, swim (this however will give you the shivers before long because the water temperature was only 18 degrees celsius), and use ropes to pull yourself along. Each student chose paths that they liked, and we finally reached a small pool of jade green crystal clear water.

This beautiful site was the payoff of our journey. Students took turns jumping of the rocks above, diving into the water with emerald colored splashes. When asked by Philip sensei on the way home, Kan Kinoshita remarked that it was "The coldest experience of my life" with a big grin on his face.

こんにちは！英語科のジェームス・テイラーです。

今年度も新型コロナウイルスと真夏の暑さのせいで、僕が毎月尾口公民館でやるイベント「イングリッシュカフェ」はなかなかできません。イングリッシュカフェは地域の方のためにお茶飲みながら楽しく英語を勉強するイベントです。僕は毎月楽しみにしているけど、今年度、6月しか「イングリッシュカフェ」ができませんでした。

今年度、旅行に役に立つ英語を勉強しようと思って、公民館のスタッフと一緒にいろんなシチュエーションを考えました。6月のシチュエーションはお店でお土産を買うことでした。1時間の中の前半は皆で簡単なフレーズを学んで、練習しました。ちょうど皆疲れているときに休憩して、そして本番！公民館のスタッフはお菓子をたくさん買って、紙のお金を印刷して、そして袋を準備してくれたので、駄菓子屋さんごっこができました。皆順番に来て、英語で好きなお菓子を買いました。大人でも、保育所の子供達でも楽しかったです。

次のイングリッシュカフェは9月に予定しています。次回のシチュエーションは空港と機内を予定しています。地域の人たちとこのようなコミュニケーションの機会があると嬉しいです。

Hello everyone! Every month I lead an event called English Café at Oguchi Community Centre. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic and the extreme summer heat, we have only been able to hold one event in the 2021 academic year.

This year, the community centre staff and I decided to focus on English that would be useful for travelling. For June’s English Café, the situation was buying souvenirs in a shop. For the first half of the hour, we learnt and practiced useful phrases together. At the halfway point we took a quick break, then came the really fun part: the community centre staff had worked really hard to buy a selection of snacks, print off paper “money”, and prepare paper bags so we could pretend we were in an old-fashioned sweetshop! Everyone took turns to come up and “buy” their favourite snacks using the phrases they had just learnt. Everyone, from older people to nursery-age children, had fun.

The next English Café is scheduled for September, and we are planning to focus on useful phrases for the airport and on an aeroplane. I’m really happy to have this kind of opportunity to interact with other members of the local community.

Hello everyone! This is Afaf Alaa second year. Summer vacation has started and I hope everyone is enjoying it to the fullest. I am relaxing and sleeping a lot as I did a lot of hard work and spent many sleepless nights when I was in school. Especially when I participated in a video-making competition two months ago. I will walk you through my video-making journey.

International contest named “The Breakthrough Junior Challenge”. This contest requires making a three-minute video explaining a concept in life science, physics, or mathematics. This year, to celebrate 60 years since the moon landing, space exploration was also in the topic. I participated in this contest because I wanted to achieve something and gain experience. Since many of the students participate in domestic competitions, I wanted to do something different. So, I chose this competition.

I broke down the video-making process into four steps. The first is to decide the topic and understand it well. The second is to make a storyboard for the video. The third is shooting all the needed scenes. Finally, editing the video. I had about two months to complete those steps.

The first stage was a hard one for me. I knew well that I love topics about space, so I searched about many topics in space exploration. However, everything was too interesting and I couldn’t choose just one topic. I tried linking two interesting topics. However, my physics teacher Ito sensei advised me not to do that as it is just a three minutes video so it will be too much information and confusing.  It was very hard for me to select just one topic. After a lot of research, I found a topic that is very interesting that I could visualize my video and my explanation when I read about it. It was about space debris or space “trash”. I decided on that and made more research. This step took more time than I expected. I thought It would take a week. However, it took about one month.

The deadline was coming near. I had to be very quick with the following steps. I had already visualized my video. I made a script and a storyboard. I showed it to another physics teacher Brandon sensei. He suggested cutting some parts because that would take too long. Three minutes was a strict rule in this competition. He checked my script and gave me some advice. Based on that I made my final script by making priorities and recording my time. I finished this process in about a week.

There were only three weeks left to the deadline, and I had many other school projects such as making a website for my Engineering Design class. Things were getting really stressful, but I had to continue. I used a blackboard to do the shooting. I wanted to make it animated so I would put a cut every letter I write. That took a lot of time.  I tried to concentrate well in class and finish my work so I can use all my free time in finalizing my video. I used all the after-class time in the shooting, all night to practice the script and make the hand-made tools for the video. I wake up at 6 am and sleep at 3 am on the weekends. I was in a rush and got less sleep.

I had only one week left for editing. I had to make all the videos I took in two weeks into a three minutes video.  All I had to do is to cut the videos little by little and adjust them with the narrating. I had to also search for free music and free sound effects which also took a lot of my effort. Several times my app crashed and everything I did was gone. That was very frustrating and I felt like giving up.  However, I didn’t give up for two main reasons. First, I had worked so hard for about two months. I felt like if I quit here I will betray myself and crush my self-esteem. I wouldn’t be able to believe that I can achieve anything anymore if I quit. The second and the main reason is that I wanted to make my parents proud of me. My parents have always been my number one supporters. Throughout the video-making process, they would give me calls to encourage me and send me my favorite snack to school. I appreciated that.

 I thought finishing this video will make them very happy and proud. Throughout the sleepless nights, I reminded myself of that and wiped my tears while continuing editing.

I was finally done with the editing the night before the submission deadline. I showed my parents and they were so happy! I did some final adjustments and was ready to submit. However, I realized that there were a lot of other steps needed for the applications. The school number, my address, about six paragraphs I had to write about the importance of science and why I applied, and so on. I had only 2 hours left. I had my video and everything so I had to be very quick with my writing and application process. While I was writing, I felt like I couldn’t make it. However, my teacher Pauline Sensei helped me a lot with grammar checking and guidance. Finally, I was able to submit just 30 minutes before the deadline. I was so relieved and checked my video on YouTube. When I rechecked my time, I felt like I was going to die. The time said three minutes and 1 second. I was devastated. In my app, I had 3 mins and 0.23 seconds. I didn’t think that it would count. I have already submitted my link so I cannot reupload it. Pauline Sensei told me that editing on YouTube itself was possible. So, she helped me cut the 0.23 seconds on YouTube. I could finalize the submission only 15 minutes before the deadline.

I felt so relieved and happy! I have finally achieved something that I can feel proud of. I had a very short time but I didn’t give up! From that video, whenever I feel like I cannot continue, I remind myself that I made this video! That’s what is keeping me going for a while. Many people congratulated me and I even got the chance to share my experience in this journal. I will keep trying my best to elongate my limit and become a stronger person. The results are going to be in November. It is very competitive so I am not expecting anything. But I had a great experience!

こんにちは、皆さん！2年生のアファフ・アラーです。夏休みを満喫していますか？私は学期中は勉強と徹夜続きだったので、今はリラックスしたり、たくさん寝ています。２か月前に動画を作るコンテストに参加した時は特に大変だったので、その体験について紹介したいと思います。

参加した海外のコンテストの名前は「The Breakthrough Junior Challenge」で、ライフサイエンス、物理、数学に関連するテーマについて解説する３分間の動画を制作するというものでした。今年は人類が月に着陸してから60年が経つ記念すべき年で、宇宙探査もテーマのひとつでした。コンテストに参加しようと思った理由は、何かを成し遂げたかったことと、経験を得たかったからでした。国内のコンテストに参加する学生はたくさんいるので、違ったことをしてみたいと思ってこのコンテストを選びました。

まず、動画制作を４つの工程に分けました。ひとつ目はテーマを選択して深く理解すること、ふたつ目は絵コンテを作ること、みっつ目は必要なシーンの撮影、最後は編集です。期間は約2か月ありました。

ひとつ目の工程はとても苦労しました。宇宙に関することは好きだったので、宇宙探査のテーマを探しましたが、どのテーマも面白そうで、ひとつに絞ることができませんでした。２つの面白いテーマをリンクさせることも試みましたが、物理の伊藤先生が「動画時間が3分しかない。情報量が多すぎるから辞めたほうが良い」とアドバイスをしてくれました。ひとつだけを選ぶのは本当に大変でしたが、たくさんリサーチした結果、面白い上に動画の内容とそれを説明している自分を頭の中で想像できるテーマを見つけました。それが「宇宙ゴミ」でした。テーマを決めたあとはそれについてもっとリサーチしました。この工程は思ったより時間がかかって、1週間ほどかと思っていたら1か月かかりました。

提出期限が近づいていたので、残りの工程を急ぐ必要がありました。動画はすでに頭の中で思い描いていたので、台本と絵コンテを作りました。それをもうひとりの物理の先生、ブランドン先生に見せたところ、時間がかかりすぎるからカットすべき箇所をいくつか提案してくれました。このコンテストでは、動画時間3分は厳守と明記されているのです。さらに、台本をチェックしてもらい、アドバイスをいくつか貰いました。それを元に、取捨選択したり、録音時間を計ったりして台本を修正しました。この過程は約1週間かかりました。

締め切りが3週間後に迫っていましたが、エンジニアリングデザインのウェブサイト制作などのほかのプロジェクトも同時進行していました。とてもストレスのかかる状況でしたが、突き進むしかありませんでした。撮影は黒板を使って行いました。各文字にカットを入れてアニメーションで動きを入れたかったので、とても時間がかかりました。授業中は集中して課題を早めに終わらせることで、動画にかける時間を増やすように頑張りました。放課後の時間は撮影に、夜の時間は台本の練習と小道具制作に費やしました。休日は6時に起きて、3時に寝ました。とても急いでいたので、ほとんど眠れませんでした。

編集に残されていた時間はたったの1週間でした。2週間分の動画を3分の動画にしなければなりませんでした。動画を一つ一つカットして、声に合わせていきました。フリーの音楽や効果音を探すことにも苦労しました。時々アプリがクラッシュして、それまでの作業が消えてしまうこともありました。その時はイライラして諦めたくなりました。諦めなかった理由は２つあります。ひとつはもう2か月近くも努力してきたため、ここで辞めてしまったら自分を裏切ることになって、自尊心に傷がつくと思ったからです。ここで辞めてしまったら二度と何かを達成することはできなくなると思いました。ふたつ目は両親に誇りに思って欲しかったからです。いつも支えてくれる両親は私の1番のサポーターです。動画制作の間も何度も励ましの電話をしてくれたり、大好きなお菓子を送ってくれました。これには本当に感謝しています。

この動画を完成させることで、彼らが喜んでくれて、誇りに思ってくれると思いました。眠れない夜もこれを考えながら涙を拭いて編集を続けました。

提出期限の前夜、ようやく編集が完了しました。両親に見せるとすごく喜んでくれました！コンテストに提出しようとしたら、申請のためにいくつかのステップがあることに気づきました。学校の電話番号や、自分の住所、科学の大切さとコンテストに参加した理由について書く6段落くらいの文章などです。残り2時間しかありませんでした。動画は完成していたので、急いで申請しなければなりませんでした。書きながら間に合わないのではないかと心配になりましたが、ポーリン先生が文法チェックと指導をしてくれました。そして、締め切りの30分前に提出することができました。ほっとした私はYouTubeの動画をチェックすると、死ぬかと思いました。動画時間が3分1秒と表示されていたのです。絶望しました。アプリでは3分と0.23秒となっていたのですが、それがカウントされるとは思っていませんでした。すでに提出していたので、再度アップロードすることはできません。しかし、ポーリン先生がYouTube上で動画を編集できることを教えてくれて、0.23秒削ることを手伝ってくれました。これを完了したのは提出期限の15分前でした。 すごくほっとして嬉しくなりました。ようやく誇りに思えることを達成できたのです。足りない時間の中で諦めませんでした。この動画のおかげで、くじけそうになった時は、このコンテストのことを思い出せばいいのです！ここ最近はそのおかげで頑張ることができています。たくさんの人が褒めてくれて、このジャーナルに体験を掲載することもできました。これからも自分の限界に挑戦して、より成長した人間になるように頑張ります。コンテストの結果は11月に発表されます。とてもレベルが高いので、入選は期待していません。ですが、本当に良い経験となりました。

Hello everyone, it’s Jonathan the camera man! The first semester is coming to a close and summer break is almost upon us. Students finished their final exams yesterday and are getting ready to go back home for the holidays. But before they do, the learning mentors organized one last event to end the semester with a bang. The event was titled "End-of-semester PARTY TIME" and was an assembly of events for students to enjoy together. You can see all the events Anne sensei and the other teachers prepared for the students in the picture on the right.

We started with sports in the gym. Students and teachers gathered to play basketball and badminton as we waited for everyone to show up for the water balloon fight. The learning mentors prepared 200 water balloons and cooled them in the dormitory refrigerators. (Although, they later concluded that we need more balloons next time.) Water balloon fights are common where I come from in America, but for most of the students here, it was their first time. They started out with getting into pairs and tossing the balloon back and forth; taking a step back with each successful toss. This got students ready and we moved to the main event, "every man for himself" mode! Students ran and threw balloons at each other, laughing and screaming the whole time. You can see my best effort to record the chaos in the video below.

 

After the water balloon fight, some students went back the gym to play basketball, where I heard their had an epic game against the teachers. After dinner, we gathered in the Living Commons for the second half of the event. It started with dessert, which consisted to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apple pie, vanilla ice cream, fruits, and soda. The sandwiches were delicious and we added ice cream to the apple pie and sodas to make floats. Once every one was full we gathered for a huge game of hide and seek. There we more than twenty people and students rushed to find places to hide. We turned off all the lights and it was exciting hiding and seeking in the dark school building. Students loved it so much that they insisted on a second game, which was equally thrilling. Finally, everyone found their spot in either karaoke at the big staircase or playing video games in the project booth as we winded down for the day. The event was a humongous success and I don't recall taking this many laughing and smiling faces in a while.

COVID-19 has made it difficult for the school to hold events such as sports days or school festivals. Luckily, the Hakusanroku Campus is secluded from society and we can conduct events like this (with safety measures to minimize risks.) I hope students return home with there latest memory being laughing and having fun with their friends, stay safe, and have a wonderful summer vacation.

みなさんこんにちは、ジョナサンです！まもなく前学期が終わり、夏休みが到来します。学生たちも期末試験が終わって家族の元へ帰る準備をしています。しかし、帰ってしまう前に、今学期最後にして最大級のイベントが開催されました。それがアン先生率いるラーニングメンターたちが企画したイベント「学期末パーティータイム」です。これ水風船合戦や大かくれんぼ大会など、学生が楽しめる複数の企画の集合体です。１枚目の写真で、企画されたスケジュールを見ることができます。

まずは体育館でバスケットボールとバドミントンから始まり、最初のメインイベントである水風船合戦のために全員が集まるまで遊びました。ラーニングメンターたちはこのために水風船を２００個準備し、暑さに備えて冷蔵庫で冷やしていました。私の故郷のアメリカでは水風船を投げ合う遊びはメジャーなのですが、白山麓キャンパスの学生のほとんどが初体験でした。そのため、まずは慣れるためにペアになって交互に水風船を投げて、キャッチに成功するたびに１歩下がるという練習をしました。水風船合戦の風船は日本のお祭りによくあるヨーヨー釣りの風船ではなく、野菜のナスのような形をした水で満たされた風船で、当てると破裂して水浸しにすることができます。要は雪合戦と同じです。練習を終えたらさっそく本番が始まりました。学生たちは笑ったり、悲鳴を上げたりしながら、走り回って風船を投げ合いました。可能な限り撮影を試みたので、上の動画でその様子をご覧ください。

水風船合戦のあとは夕食まで休憩をとりました。何人かの学生は体育館に戻って、先生チームと50点まで競い合う名勝負を繰り広げました。夕食後はリビングコモンズに集まって、アン先生たちが用意したデザートを食べました。ピーナッツバターとジェリーのサンドイッチ、アップルパイ、バニラアイス、フルーツ、ドリンクがありました。アメリカの定番おやつのピーナッツバターとジェリーのサンドイッチ（通称PB&J）は絶品で、バニラアイスをアップルパイに乗せて食べたり、ソフトドリンクでフロートを作ったりしました。満足いくまで食べたあとは校舎を使った大かくれんぼ大会を開催しました。20人以上が参加して、鬼が４人、残りが校舎の1階と2階に隠れました。すべての電気を消して、いつも勉強している空間でかくれんぼをするのはとてもスリルがあって楽しめました。学生たちも楽しかったようで、第2ラウンドを要求するほどでした。遊び疲れたあとは大階段のカラオケ組とプロジェクトブースのビデオゲーム組に分かれて、消灯時間まで遊びました。イベントは大成功で、撮影係としては、これほどたくさんの笑顔を撮るのは久しく感じました。

新型コロナウィルスの影響で、本来ならば開催される体育祭や学園祭などのイベントが中止になる中で、対策をすればこのようなイベントを開催できる全寮制の白山麓キャンパスは恵まれた環境だと思います。帰省する学生が今回のイベントで見せた笑顔で、楽しかった思い出を胸に地元へ戻り、安全に、そして楽しい夏休みを過ごすことを願っています。
