Hi, it's Jonathan, the camera man! On February 25 (Thu), we held a farewell party for the second year students in the multipurpose room next to the cafeteria. This was after the Design & Fabrication Club's final presentation, which you can read about here. The second year students have finished their 24 months here at Hakusanroku Campus and will be moving on to their next stage either at Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand (if fate favors them) or (sadly more likely) take online courses from home or Kanazawa Campus depending on the situation of COVID-19. I personally wish that they will be able to travel to New Zealand. That said, even if they cannot, they will still be in good hands, taking courses from Otago Polytechnic online, and specially crafted courses from the skilled staff at Kanazawa Campus.

When I first met the second year students, they were only 15 years old. Two years does not sound like much. However, I have seen immense growth during that time. The two year system at Hakusanroku means that first year students start out like any other high school, as newcomers, overshadowed by their seniors, but in just one year they suddenly become the highest class in the campus. This is one of my favorite moments at ICT, where students suddenly show signs of leadership, responsibility, and maturity as their role goes from youngest to oldest. I don't know of any other school can give second year students a similar opportunity to become such leaders at this age. It's not all roses, but I believe it has it's benefits.

This year's second year students had a lot to go through. They were hit directly by the pandemic, which dramatically altered their freedom compared to their first year. Many could not participate in contest they planned to, or goals they aimed for. However, the second year's bounced back. They spent hours of their free time working on new projects, school events, and school work. I would almost always find someone working in the evening, either in the maker studio or project booth after hours. What I want to say is they put in a lot of effort, and it shows.

This is kind of starting to sound like they are leaving us so I am going to move on. They are still with us for three whole years after all! I can't wait to see what they are like then. During the farewell party, first year and second year students exchanged message cards, and the second year students also presented one to the teachers. Each student said a few words, mostly messages of encouragement and/or friendly taunts to the remaining first year students and we watched a slideshow of pictures taken during the two years they were here. Finally, we sang a farewell song together. I hope the second year students can look back fondly at these two years the same way I do. See you again!

こんにちは、撮影係ジョナサンです！2021年2月25日（木）、2年生を送る会がカフェテリア横の多目的室で開催されました。この会は以前紹介したデザイン＆ファブリケーションクラブの最終発表会の後に行われました。2年生は白山麓キャンパスの2年間を終え、来年からは新型コロナウィルスの状況によって、ニュージーランドのオタゴ・ポリテクニクへ留学するか、現在の3年生のように自宅や金沢キャンパスからオンライン授業に参加することになります。個人的にはニュージーランドへ留学する機会を得て欲しいですが、出来なかったとしてもオタゴ・ポリテクニクの授業をオンラインで受けることができますし、金沢キャンパスの先生方が専用に組んだ授業を受けることになります。

2年生にはじめて出会った時、彼らはまだ中学校を卒業したばかりの15歳でした。たった2年間でしたが、大きく成長しました。国際高専の1年目はどこの高専・高校と同じように下級生としてスタートするのですが、1年後には突然最高学年となります。この白山麓キャンパス2年間のシステムがもたらす効果として、学生がリーダーシップと責任を発揮するのです。2年目でこの機会を与えるシステムは珍しいのではないでしょうか。良いことだけではありませんが、メリットも多いと思います。

2年生は1年目の終盤で拡大した新型コロナウィルスの影響で生活や自由度が大きく影響を受けました。目標にしていたコンテストが中止になったり、様々な目標の達成が困難になりました。しかし、2年生はそんな中でも頑張りました。放課後の自由時間の多くを新たなプロジェクト、学事イベント、学業に注ぎました。夕方になってメーカースタジオやプロジェクトブースを見るとよく何かに打ち込んでいる2年生の姿を見つけることができました。彼らの成長はその努力の賜物です。

ここまで書くとまるで卒業してしまうかのように聞こえてきましたが、まだ丸3年間残っています。卒業する頃のさらなる成長を見るのがとても楽しみです。送る会では1年生と2年生がそれぞれメッセージを書いた色紙を交換し、2年生は加えて先生にも贈りました。そのあとは2年生による下級生へのメッセージをひとりずつ述べ、2年間の活動をまとめたスライドショーを鑑賞しました。最後にみんなで「旅立ちの日に」を合唱して終了となりました。2年生がこの2年間を良い思い出として振り返る時間だったことを願ってます。また会いましょう！

We are approaching the end of our third year of ICT’s new curriculum and new campus. There are many things I love about living and working in Hakusanroku. One of them is the history and culture of this area. I always like to find out about the places I live, and I’ve been trying to do that here by getting involved in the community. I hold monthly English Café events at the local Community Centre, and I made an English translation of the exhibitions at the Hakusan Folk Museum in Shiramine.

Another way of learning about the history and culture of Hakusanroku is through our school’s library, which has some old books about the local area. When browsing one day I pulled a fascinating bilingual book off the shelf: ‘Villages of Tedori River Gorge: The final curtain descends on a way of life, its traditions, and ancient culture’ by Morton W. Huber.

It turns out that Morton Huber was a Professor of Environmental Science at KIT in the 1970s and in his spare time used to travel up to Hakusanroku to paint, draw, and take photographs. This book was published in 1976 and in it Dr. Huber writes about the way of life and culture of people in Hakusanroku, including ningyou jyoruri puppet shows from Higashi-futakuchi and Fukaze, hinoki crafts from Fukaze, and silkworm raising and tree growing in Kuwajima. He also writes at length about the Tedori Dam that was due to be built and many of these villages, and their culture, were due to be lost. As a result, the book has an underlying nostalgia and sadness, along with Dr. Huber’s beautiful photographs and sketches, which evoke a rural way of life that has mostly been lost, but glimpses of which can still occasionally be seen.

I searched for Dr. Huber online and found that he is still alive – aged 97! I think it would be very interesting if his old employer, KIT, got in touch to tell him about the new campus they built in a part of the world that he loved so much.

いよいよ国際高専の新しいカリキュラムの3年目が終わります。白山麓に住んで働くといろんないいことがあります。その中の一つはこの地域の歴史と文化です。僕はいつも住んでいる場所のことを詳しく知りたいですから、ここにもコミュニティでいろんな活動をしています。月に１回尾口公民館で「イングリッシュカフェ」というイベントをやったり、白峰にある白山ろく民族資料館に展示してる日本語を英語版を翻訳しました。

そして、国際高専の図書館は白山麓の歴史や文化についての古い本がたくさんあります。ある日、僕はとても面白いバイリンガルな本を１冊見つけました。それは、モートン・ヒューバー先生の「手取峡谷の村落 終幕の下りるとき」という本です。

モートン・ヒューバー先生は1970年代に金沢工業大学で環境工学の教授として働きました。その間に、スケッチや水彩画や白黒の鉛筆画や写真の作品を作るためによく白山麓まで来ました。この1976年に出版された本にモートン・ヒューバー先生は白山麓の歴史と文化を説明します。特に東二口と深瀬の人形浄瑠璃、深瀬のヒノキ笠、桑島の養蚕と山林の木の育ちが注目されています。その時代は手取りダムを作ることが決めたけど、工事はまだ始まってない時でしたから、この本はなくなる文化や生活振りのノスタルジーと残念な気持ちで書いてあると思います。モートン・ヒューバー先生の絵は今の時代にあまり見えない田舎の生活を見せる絵です。でも、現在の白山麓では昔の生活振りが残っているところが時々見えます。

モートン・ヒューバー先生をインターネットで調べたら、まだ97歳で元気にアメリカで暮らしているそうです。モートン・ヒューバー先生が昔働いた大学から「大好きな白山麓に新しいキャンパスが建てました」の連絡があったら面白いと思います。

              Hello everyone, Jomkit here with my very first journal entry! It’s been a few weeks since I started working here, but the beauty of nature still astounds me. I am not much for photography, but when I see the landscape surrounding us I can’t help but try and capture it on my phone. I’m no stranger to towering mountain ranges and trees that carpet them, but in my hometown of Portland, Maine, I would need to drive 45 minutes out of the city to see such magnificence. Here, all it takes is one glance out the window and I’m faced with a visage painted by the turning of the seasons.

              With that being said, the Hakusan area is much quieter than what I’m used to. Growing up I lived in the city next to a hospital, so there were many nights where I fell asleep in conditions some people would consider too noisy to think. But I’m getting used to the calmness of the rural area, and there’s certainly a few sights to see. One thing that has helped me deal with homesickness is walking to the nearby coffee shops, such as Kijitora or Koubou. I absolutely love trying new coffee, and neither of these places have disappointed. Kijitora’s style is delightfully reminiscent of the cafes in my hometown, and they have a fantastic selection of espresso drinks. Koubou on the other hand may only offer a limited selection of drink styles, but their cozy seats and warm atmosphere really makes you lose track of time. The homemade baked goods are likewise delightful. I’ve heard the coffee scene in Ishikawa is bustling, so I look forward to getting to know the specialties of local shops and roasters.

              はじめまして。ジョムキット先生の最初の白山麓ジャーナルですよ！ここで働き始めてから数週間が経ちましたが、いまだに周辺の自然の美しさに驚かされます。写真は得意じゃありませんが、周りの地形を見るとスマホのカメラ機能で捉えようとしたくなります。そびえたつ山麓や生い茂る森林は私の故郷のメーン州のポートランドにもあるのですが、見るためには市外へ45分は運転しないといけません。ここでは窓の外をのぞくだけで季節に彩られた風景画が目に飛び込んできます。

              それはそうと、白山麓は故郷よりずっと静かでもあります。町中の病院の隣の家に生まれ育った私は、人によってはとても眠れないような光と騒音の中眠りにつくことに慣れています。しかし、人里離れたここの静けさに馴染んできました。ホームシックを紛らわせるためによくしているのはキジトラコーヒー研究所や珈琲KOUBOUなどのカフェまで散歩することです。新しいコーヒーを試すのは大好きで、いずれの店も納得の美味しさです。キジトラは故郷のコーヒーを思い出させてくれる素敵な味ですし、エスプレッソの種類が豊富です。KOUBOUは飲み方のバリエーションこそ少ないですが、温かみのある雰囲気が時間を忘れさせてくれます。手作りの焼き菓子も最高です。石川県はコーヒーに熱い県と聞いていますので、地元の店やロースターを回るのが楽しみです。

Hello everyone! My name is Brandon Wohlfarth and I just started teaching here at ICT, so this is my first Hakusanroku Journal entry. Since arriving at the Hakusanroku campus I have been blown away by the wonderful scenery surrounding campus. The mountains reaching up towards the sky, the rich reds and browns that mark the fall season, have all impressed me.

The natural landscape of the Hakusanroku campus is a stark contrast from many of the locations that I have lived in the United States. I attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology located in Terre Haute, Indiana where I received both my undergraduate and master’s degree. While I love Indiana, unfortunately the scenery only consisted of flat land used primarily for agriculture. This made outdoor activities such as hiking much less enjoyable. The difference between these two locations is truly like comparing night and day, completely different. After the winter, I am looking forward to being able to hike and explore the various trails in the Hakusan area.

I have been lucky so far that the weather has been pleasant so that I can still take the opportunity to enjoy nature before the snow and cold comes in. I have enjoyed walking around the Hakusanroku campus and the surrounding area. I am excited to see how the natural landscape surrounding us changes as the seasons progress, and in what other ways it may differ from what I have experienced in the past. Below are some of the pictures of the surrounding area that I have taken so far. I am not the greatest photographer so bear with me. Over the last few weeks it has been wonderful meeting the students, faculty, and staff members here at ICT. I look forward to working with everyone!

はじめまして！国際高専に着任したばかりのブランドン・ウォルファースと申します。これが最初の白山麓ジャーナルになります。白山麓キャンパスに着いてからというもの、周辺の美しい景色にただただ圧倒されています。山が空へ伸びてゆき、秋を彩る紅や茶色に染まっています。

白山麓キャンパスの周りの自然はアメリカで住んでいた場所とは大きく違います。私はインディアナ州テレ・ホートにあるローズハルマン工科大学で学士と修士号を取りました。インディアナ州の風景も大好きですが、農業に使われている平地がほとんどです。これによりハイキングのようなアウトドアな遊びに適していません。白山麓キャンパスと比べるとその違いは明らかです。暖かくなったら白山のハイキングコースを探索するのが楽しみです。

それでも良い天気が続いているおかげで、寒くなって雪が降る前に自然を楽しむチャンスがありました。これまでは白山麓キャンパス周辺を散歩して楽しんでいます。季節が進む中で、どんな風に景色が変わるのか、そして私が過去に住んだ土地とどう違うのか体験するのが楽しみです。いくつか撮った周辺の写真を載せておきます。あまり写真は得意じゃないので許してくださいね。ここ数週間は国際高専の学生と教職員に会える楽しい時期でした。皆さんと一緒にお仕事するのが楽しみです！

The English Language and Culture Club held their first event on July 29^th. To celebrate finishing the first semester and their final exams hosted a movie night with snacks. This was the culmination of a four-week process, where the students did the following tasks

1. Selected the movie they wanted to watch
2. Made announcements about the movie in homeroom
3. Questioned their classmates about the snacks they wanted
4. Designed, made, customized and posted movie posters to promote movie night
5. Made a flyer with information about the four main characters and the actors playing them

Finally, on the 29^th, at 7:00, Mao, Shii, Afaf and Shiori gathered in the Learning Commons to set out the snacks and set up the movie. About 10 1^st and 2^nd year students joined them to celebrate the end of the semester and exams, eat snacks and watch the movie, Get Out. Get Out is a 2017 horror movie that was chosen by many organizations and publications as one of the ten best films of the year, nominated for four Academy Awards and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

ランゲージ＆カルチャークラブが今年度初となるイベントを7月29日に開催しました。前学期の期末試験終了を祝して開催されたムービーナイト（スナック菓子あり）です。準備としてメンバーは4週かけて以下のことをしました。

1. 観たい映画の選出
2. ホームルームで映画の告知
3. クラスメイトから食べたいスナック菓子のアンケート調査
4. 上映する映画のポスターのデザイン、制作、飾りつけ
5. 主要登場人物4人の情報を載せたチラシの制作

最後に、29日の朝7時に、真央さん、史依さん、アファフさん、詩織さんがラーニングコモンズに集まってお菓子と映画のセッティングをしました。1，2年生合わせて約10名が集まって学期と試験の終わりを祝って映画「ゲット・アウト」とお菓子を堪能しました。「ゲット・アウト」は2017年のホラー映画で、多方面からその年のベスト映画トップ10に選ばれており、４つのアカデミー賞にノミネートされ、脚本賞を受賞しています。
