Biomimicry: the design and production of solutions that are modeled on elements and ideas found in nature.
The students learned this word during the first half of the semester and have been striving to use biomimicry in their Engineering Design class. The task is to create a toy with some surprising element while using biomimicry.
In order to study biomimicry and find inspiration, the students visited the Ishikawa Insect Museum earlier in the semester. There, they saw specimens of insects from around the world and also observed live insects native to Ishikawa. In The Butterfly Garden, students had the chance to walk among the butterflies as they flew around freely. Yuya even made a few butterfly friends who landed on him and would not leave! Some of the students were even brave enough to touch some of the insects as they observed them. They recorded videos in slow motion, sketched drawings, and took pictures. Hopefully, the students are no longer afraid of insects!
Returning to class, students have been working on incorporating biomimicry into the toys they are designing. With various elements of surprise, it’s been fun to see how the students are taking their observations and coming up with new designs and ideas. One group even put a lot of time into gluing and cutting sheets of paper to create their own paper honeycomb. The students are finishing up their prototypes this week and I can’t wait to see how their ideas turned out!

バイオミミックリー：自然界に見られる生態やアイデアを参考にして、デザインや解決法を生み出すこと。
今学期の前半、学生たちはこの言葉を習ってからバイオミミックリーをエンジニアリングデザインの授業で取り入れようと奮闘しています。課題はバイオミミックリーを活用してサプライズ要素のあるオモチャを作ることです。
バイオミミックリーの発想を得るために、学生たちは石川県ふれあい昆虫館へ出かけました。そこでは、世界中の昆虫の標本や、石川県に住む昆虫を実際に見て触れることができます。チョウの園では、自由に飛び回る蝶々の中を歩き回ることもできます。湧也さんにいたっては、体にとまってもまったく逃げないほど蝶と仲良くなりました！勇気のある学生は見るだけでなく、実際に昆虫を触って観察していました。その他にも、スローモーション撮影をしたり、スケッチをしたり、写真を撮っていました。昆虫と触れ合って、愛着が湧いたかもしれませんね。
教室に戻ってからは、学生はバイオミミックリーをオモチャに取り入れるデザイン作りをしました。サプライズ要素と一口に言っても色々な形があるので、学生がそれぞれ観察した内容を活かした新しいデザインやアイデアを生み出すのを見るのが面白かったです。中には紙を切り貼りして蜂の巣を作った学生もいました。今週でプロトタイプは完成予定なので、どのようにアイデアが形になるのか見るのが楽しみです！

Hakusanroku is enclosed by snow in winter, and students tend to stay in their dormitories. To prevent a lack of exercise, I decided to take charge of the winter sports promotion here at ICT. My choice of winter sport was skiing. However, many of the students do not have any skiing equipment. So, I contacted Kozakura-Sou, which provide rental ski service at Hakusan Ichirinoonsen Ski Resort, and have a relationship with us through regional cooperation activities in the past. They kindly provided us with an assortment of skiing equipment they were not using. Now the first floor of the Innovation Hub has transformed into a ski shop and students have no lack of skiing gear to enjoy.
January 13 and 14 severed perfect weather, and I took the students to Ichirinoonsen Ski Resort, which is located about 7 kilometers from the Hakusanroku campus. After riding the ropeway, you can actually see the campus from the top. Katabe sensei, our Japanese teacher and experienced skier, accompanied us and took charge in teaching the students the ropes. I believe this excursion served well as a chance for our students to move their bodies and enjoy the magnificent nature of Mt. Hakusan.
This year's winter is warm and there is less snow that usual. However, we, teachers, staff and students alike are excited to stay fit until spring by taking ski trips every weekend.

白山麓の冬は雪に閉ざされるので、学生たちは寮に引き篭もりがち、運動不足が心配です。この解消のために、スキーを企画したところ、学生の多くは道具を持っていないことが判明しました。そこで、地域連携活動でお付き合いのある一里野温泉スキー場やスキーレンタル店の小桜荘の方々にお願いをして、使わなくなったスキーを融通して頂きました。おかげさまで白山麓キャンパスのイノベーションハブ一階は、さながらスキーショップの様相となり、学生達は不自由なくスキーができるようになりました。
好天に恵まれた1月13日、14日の連休に学生達を連れて一里野温泉スキー場に行きました。このスキー場は、白山麓キャンパスから僅か７ｋｍのところにあり、ロープウェイで山頂に登ると、我々の校舎を望むことができます。一緒に参加された国語科の潟辺先生は、スキーのベテラン、学生向けにスキーの指導をして頂きました。ご指導の甲斐あって参加した学生達は全員山頂から滑走することができました。日頃の運動不足の解消と、白山麓の雄大な自然を満喫した休日になったのではないかと思います。
今シーズンは暖冬のため積雪は昨年に比べて少なめですが、春までの体力維持のため、我々職員も学生と一緒に毎週スキーに行こうと盛り上がっています。

This place is called Wata-ga-daki. It is about 40 minutes by bicycle (or 15 minutes by car) from ICT's Hakusanroku campus. It is about halfway to the famous Yamaboshi sweets shop. Yamaboshi is famous for delicious Oban-yaki. Oban-yaki are a Japanese sweets similar to pancakes and filled with red bean paste or custard cream. They are 150 yen each. However, one person can only buy two. Today, a friend invited me to go and try them. The outer crust was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. There was more sweet red bean paste inside than I have ever seen. It was by far the best Oban-yaki I have ever eaten.
There is a skateboard arena near Yama-boshi. My friend likes skateboarding and he invited me to join him. Wata-ga-daki is on the way. Students often stop by on their way to eat Oban-yaki. I felt all my worries and stress melt away when I see this view, so I'm suspicious it is a power spot. It looks very different in real life, so I recommend anyone interested to come to Hakusan to see it. It is a majestic sight.

この場所は綿ヶ滝と言い国際高専の白山麓キャンパスの近く(自転車で40分ほど、車では十数分ほど)の場所にあります。綿ヶ滝はこの付近で有名な山法師の間にあります。山法師では大判焼きと言われる美味しい(1人2個までの個数制限がある1ケ150円)お菓子を食べることができます。私も友達に誘われて食べに行ったのですが生地は表面がカリッ、中はモチっとしており、具のつぶあんはとても量が多く私がこれまでに食べた大判焼きの中では文句なしの1番のおいしさです。
山法師の近くにはスケートボードをする場所があり、私はスケートボードをするのが好きな友達に誘われて今回ついて行きました。綿ヶ滝は大判焼きを食べに行くついでに気分転換をする生徒がたまに寄り道をします。色々な悩みやストレスがこの景色を見ると吹き飛ぶのでパワースポットじゃないのかと疑っています。実際に見るのとこの画像を見るのではだいぶ見える世界が違うので興味がある方は是非白山に訪れた見てください。とても壮大な景色ですよ。

One of the important ICT principles is involvement with the local community and being good neighbors. As part of this policy, Pauline Baird and I go to Hakurei Elementary School 2 times a month to tell the students stories in English. The students are split into 2 groups, grades 1 to 3 and grades 4 to 6. I teach one group and Pauline teaches the other group and the next time we go to Hakurei we switch groups.
So far we have told the students the following stories; The Enormous Turnip, Six Dinner Sid, Edward the Emu, I Want My Hat Back, The Hare and the Tortoise and The Little Engine That Could. It’s quite enjoyable as the students are eager to be involved in the storytelling and to act out the story. It’s a way to help them and their classmates understand the story.
Next year I hope to bring ICT students to Hakurei Elementary School to help tell the stories. This way the students can become more involved in the local community and use their English skills to teach others English. If you have any suggestions for stories we should tell, please let Pauline or I know.

これまで読んだ本は「おおきなかぶ」「Six Dinner Sid」「Edward the Emu」「どこいったん」「うさぎと亀」「The Little Engine That Could」です。子供たちが授業に積極的に参加して、物語を演じてくれるので、とても楽しいです。演じることで、自身とクラスメイトの理解を助けることにもなります。
来年はICTの学生も白嶺小学校へ連れてきたいです。彼らも絵本の読み聞かせをすることで地域との交流を深め、英語スキルを伸ばすきっかけになります。読み聞かせにおすすめの本があれば、私かポーリン先生にぜひ教えてください。

KTB, the Japanese teacher here. First, congratulations to first-year student Hinata for passing the paper test for English Proficiency grade two! Today, Yuka and Ichika joined us as we set out to take her ID photo needed for the interview test. On the drive back through the tinted mountains, we stopped at the café "Detza" in Torigoe for some sweets. Our conversation varied from all the era names in Japanese history (which Ichika has memorized), how to say Bangkok's formal name (in Thailand they learn it by song), the girls' future and looking forward to skiing in the winter.
Students are becoming increasingly busy in this second semester. However, today became a pleasant lull in their busy life. Lately, the girls are practicing for their performance in music class. I hear they are practicing morning, evening and nighttime, using most of their free time between classes and the learning session. What will their performance be like? On the drive back they spoke about their plans to go to Universal Studios Japan. They seemed reenergized by the time we got back to school, saying the sugar will help them through the learning session.
(*"Detza" is next to the Torigoe Ikkou Ikki History Museum. The people who run the place are parents of my daughter's classmate. Their baked sweets are so delicious you'll want to squeal.)

国語科のＫＴＢです。Ｓ科１年生の日菜さんが英検２級の１次試験に見事合格！２次の受検に必要な証明写真撮影のため、悠華さん、イチカさんも一緒に鶴来まで出かけました。紅葉に彩られた山を眺めながらのドライブの帰り道、鳥越のカフェ｢デッツア｣で女子（＋おじさん１名）会と相成りました。美味しいスイーツをいただきながら、縄文から平成までの日本の時代名称（イチカさんは全部暗記しています）、タイ語での「バンコク」の長い正式名称（タイの子らは歌で覚えるそう）、将来のことから冬のお楽しみのスキーまで、話に花が咲きます。
後期に入ってから勉強でますます忙しい毎日ですが、「忙中閑あり」で楽しいひとときとなりました。彼女たちが最近がんばっているのは、音楽の授業での発表会に向けての練習です。朝練・夕練・夜練と、授業とラーニングセッション以外の時間を目一杯活用して取り組んでいるそうです。どんな発表になるでしょうか。帰りの車中でも、長期休暇になったら３人でＵＳＪに行きたいねと盛り上がります。行きの車中では眠そうでしたが、「糖分補給で夜のラーニングセッション頑張ります。」と元気いっぱいに帰校しました。
