Hello. It's Kihara, the first-year homeroom teacher. Today, I would like to introduce our math class at Hakusanroku campus.
Here at the Hakusanroku campus, there are four math teachers. Hazwan sensei, Alaa sensei, Steven sensei, who just joined us this month, and myself. Our nationalities are all different: Malesia, Egypt, America and Japan. Together, we teach math in English. Can you imagine taking a math class in English? Many people may picture their junior high school or high school math class and think "understanding lectures and solving problems in English sounds difficult." I agree. High school math is difficult enough in your first language. At Hakusanroku campus, we have math lectures in English. However, the time teachers use the blackboard and slides is less than half of the period. Most of the class is devoted to time where students teach each other and solve problems together. For example, the following question was created by our first-year students. Can you figure out the answer?

Lately, more and more students are writing their answers in English and speaking with the international teachers. It seems they are gradually adjusting to using English in math class. This class is different from simply sitting and listening to a teacher, or taking notes written on the blackboard and solving problems. こんにちは。1年生担任の木原です。今回は皆さんに本校で行われている数学の授業を紹介します。
ここ白山麗キャンパスには数学の授業を担当している教員が4人います。私、ハズワン先生、アラー先生、そして10月から新しく着任されたスティーブン先生です。私以外は全員外国人で出身国もマレーシア、エジプト、アメリカと様々です。この4人の教員で数学を英語で授業をしています。さて、皆さんは英語で行われる数学の授業がどのようなものだと思いますか？「英語で数学の説明を聞いて理解するのは大変そう」、「英語で書かれた問題を解くのは難しそう」などなど、普段皆さんが中学校や高校で受けている授業がそのまま英語になった形を思い浮かべたかもしれませんね。もちろん、ここでも数学の内容を英語で講義する時間はあります。ただでさえ難しい高校数学の内容を英語で聞いて理解するのは、確かにちょっと大変です。ただ、このように教員が学生に黒板やスライドを使って説明する時間は授業全体の半分もありません。授業のほとんどの時間は、学生同士が問題を解き合ったり、説明し合ったり、教え合ったりしながら学んでいます。例えば以下の問題は今年の1年生が作成した問題です。皆さん、解けますか？

こんにちは。1年生担任の木原です。今回は皆さんに本校で行われている数学の授業を紹介します。

新しく10月から着任したスティーブン先生
Students have been on vacation for about one month and a half from the beginning of August to the end of September. During that time, they went back to their homes and could relax. They also had to work on a STEM project of their choice and then present it at a fair at Hakusanroku campus. “STEM” stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, so students had a wide variety of choices for their projects depending on their interests.
The STEM fair was held on September 26th. Students each presented their project in English with a poster and some even brought props from their project. These projects ranged from building a remote controlled car to measuring the effectiveness of house cleaning products on killing mold to surveying Japanese people and foreigners on their ratio preference for pictures. The students put a lot of work and effort into their projects and it was nice to see the fruits of their labor. Doing projects of that scope in a second language is not easy, but they did a great job.
All teachers who came to see the projects were invited to evaluate them. The two best students were awarded with a first and second prize. Furthermore, an additional four students were awarded with a special award. These six winners will have to present their projects again during the ICT school festival that will take place on October 20th and 21st. Good luck to the students and I hope many people will come to encourage them!

白山麓キャンパスの学生は８月のはじめから９月の終わりまで、夏休みで学校を離れていました。その間は自宅へ戻り、リラックスすることができたと思います。ただ、同時に、白山麓キャンパスで開催されるSTEMプロジェクトの発表準備をする必要がありました。STEMはscience（科学）、technology（技術）、engineering（工学）、mathematics（数学）の略で、学生は自分の興味に合わせて、広い範囲の中から研究テーマを選ぶことができます。
9月26日、STEMプロジェクトを発表するSTEMフェアが開催されました。各学生はポスターや製作したものを展示して、英語で発表を行いました。プロジェクトは、ラジコンカーを製作するもの、家庭用洗剤のカビへの効き目を測るもの、日本人と外国人に街頭インタビューを実施して黄金比の好みを比較するものまで様々でした。学生がプロジェクトに費やした努力の成果を見ることができて良かったです。このスケールのプロジェクトを第二言語で行うことは決して簡単ではありませんが、学生たちはよく頑張ったと思います。
発表を見るために訪れた先生には評価シートが配られました。もっとも優秀だった２人の学生には大賞が、追加で４人に特別賞が贈られました。この６人の学生は10月20日～21日に開催される国際高専の「高専祭」でもう一度プロジェクトの発表を行います。学生らにエールを送りつつ、たくさんの応援がもらえるように祈っています。

“Asslamo Alikom”, this is an Arabic greeting means peace be upon you all. I am Alaa Hussien, one of the ICT teachers. This year, I teach 2 days a week at Hakusanroku campus and 3 days at Kanazawa campus. Although, the place of Hakusanroku campus is far away from my home, I really feel happy to commute twice a week, because my hobby is driving, especially the way to Hakusanroku campus is very beautiful, surrounded by green mountains, rivers and water streams. This spiritual environment helps me to wash my brain and refresh myself, arriving my office full of energy to start a productive working day. The very beautiful green fields on both sides of the road remind me of my home town where the fields of the Egyptian cotton, the best cotton in the world with a long staple.
This semester, I teach Fundamental Mathematics with Prof. Kihara, an experienced math teacher. As an engineer, I connect many of the topics to real world applications in order to show the students how mathematics is useful for our life. Students also realized that mathematics is not a subject of memorizing some formulas to answer some worksheet questions, but it an essential knowledge to solve many daily life problems to make life easier and more comfortable
In order to foster collaboration and communication skills among students, the lesson plan is designed so that students get involved all the class time. The class topic is explained at the beginning of the class in a short period, and then the students are given the rest of class time to solve many problems, where some of the problems are related to practical applications. During this session, the students who need help are encouraged to ask and acquire knowledge. On the other hand, the students who could understand the topic and solve all the problems are encouraged to gain the skills of leadership and being responsible by helping their mates, so that all students learn and understand the topic well.
The environment in the class is a very good model of active learning, where you find a student teaches a group of his/her mates at one of the corners using a small whiteboard, a teacher explains something to some students on the main board, a group of students tries to teach another group,.., and so on. I feel proud of my students when I find one of them tries his/her best to find an easy way and simple examples to teach his/her mates and get them finally understand.
The teaching staff at Hakusanroku campus is a mixture of different backgrounds and different cultures. They are very enthusiastic to create a global educational environment. A lot of discussions and group meetings are done for exchanging ideas and suggestions to make the best use of their experience and knowledge to teach the students the way of thinking and gain different skills. I am happy to work and collaborate with them towards the mission of making the leaders of global innovation.

“Hi everyone, my name is Jason de Tilly. I teach biology at hakusanroku and assist in teaching chemistry there. Learning science in another language is definitely a challenge, but I have been pleasantly surprised at the students’ progression and motivation since the beginning of April. They seem to be very interested in the scientific and critical ways of thinking that we teach in the science classes. Even though there is a language barrier, they seem determined to overcome it.
We have done a few laboratory classes that they have seemed to enjoy. Before Golden Week, we did observations of cells under the microscope in biology class. It was a less stressful, more relaxing class and the students seemed to appreciate that. Some even came after class to continue observing different slides under the microscope. I was happy to see that scientific curiosity emanate from the students.
I have also had the chance to supervise some of the learning sessions we have at the campus with the learning mentors. It is very interesting to see the students in a more relaxed environment working on their different projects.
I have been enjoying interacting with the students very much and I am looking forward to seeing how they will grow during their time here at hakusanroku.

いくつか実験の授業を行いましたが、学生たちは楽しんでいるようでした。ゴールデンウィーク前、顕微鏡を使った細胞の観察授業を行いました。ストレスが少ない、リラックスした授業だったので学生たちにとっては良かったようです。何人か授業後に残って違うスライドを観察している学生もいました。学生たちがサイエンスに対して興味を持っているのを見ると嬉しくなります。
ラーニングメンターと一緒にラーニングセッションの指導をする機会もありました。さらにリラックスした雰囲気でプロジェクトに取り組む学生たちを見るのも面白かったです。
学生たちとの交流するのはとても楽しく、これからこの白山麓キャンパスでどのように成長するのかを見るのを楽しみにしています。
