Hi, this is Maesa again. Lucky for me I was able to find some time to give you guys an update. The last few weeks, and the next few weeks, have been busy but also very exciting. ICT has started up their Summer Camp programs, starting with a Global Summer Camp with students mainly from Thailand and a couple of Japanese students living aboard.

The project goal was to create a promotional video to help the local community attract more tourists. We had 4 teams create amazing videos with each team highlighting a topic based on their focus area. As a technical school, ICT helps introduce students to different technologies. We started with using drones indoor with picture banners of the local area to help students hone their piloting skills to take pictures from afar safely. ICT also had the students experiment with gimbals with their smartphones to help stabilize hand shot, closeup videos. With all the video clips collected, the students used Windows Movie Maker on Microsoft Surface Pros to edit and finalized their videos.

All the videos turned out well, and I cannot wait to see what the next Summer Camp group will create.

やあ、メイサだよ。運よくジャーナルを書く時間が見つかったので、近況報告していきます。今月は忙しくもワクワクするような出来事があります。国際高専ではサマーキャンプ・プログラムがスタートし、まず初めに主にタイの生徒と海外在住の日本人数人を含んだグローバルサマーキャンプが開催されました。

このプロジェクトの目標は国際高専周辺の地域に観光客を呼び寄せるプロモーションビデオの制作でした。４つのチームがそれぞれ決めたテーマについて素晴らしいビデオを作ってくれました。ICTが高専であるおかげで生徒たちに様々な機材を提供することができました。ドローンの操縦訓練として、安全に距離を保って撮影飛行できるよう周辺地域の写真のバナーを使って屋内で練習をしました。また、ジンバルを使ってスマホの動画撮影の手振れを抑える体験もしました。動画を撮影したあとはマイクロソフトSurface ProでWindowsムービーメーカーを使って編集を行いました。

 どのチームのビデオも見事で、次のサマーキャンプグループがどんな動画を作るのかいまから楽しみです。

My journal entry for this year would have to be about the running that has been going on in campus. Both in the class and in the mornings. 3 laps. 2km. once a week at the start of class and 3 times before school not obligatory. As rewarding as it has been for the whole class to get better from consistency; the real joy for me has been getting outside in the mornings.

A lot of my personal life has become either inside a room or car, or near a screen. So to have a regular habit of bursting outside; the best being on a beautiful spring morning with flowers blooming and the sun, warm yet not hot, yelling at the world for how huge and exciting the world is – to large droplets of rain dousing me right down to the skin; thudding footsteps of water-logged shoes, and no company from the students. I still enjoy those wet 2kms though; there is truth to the saying ‘you can be cold, wet, and miserable, or just cold and wet’. It’s all in the mind.

The mornings run give me a good time to take the 2km at my own pace and have a small chat with Ian while I run, or encourage the students/others who join. At the end I always feel much better than when I started, and because it’s not that long, the run adds more energy to my day than it takes.

The students who come regularly show a great deal of grit, determination, and self-motivation. I do applaud the other students who choose to sleep, when they have stayed up so late. Yet I think that their situation would be far improved if they were able to get a good amount of sleep and come to running in the mornings.

It is my hope that the morning runs will become a habit, then tradition. I have hopes that maybe even a yearly race could happen. Encouraging the students to take their health into their own hands and away from the screens and chairs so often.

As for Ian, myself, and anyone who has joined; there is a joy of seizing the day together, and it has brightened up my spring by no small amount.

今回の白山麓ジャーナルのテーマは校内ランニングです。体育の授業と早朝の両方。キャンパスを3周。2キロの距離。体育の始めと週に3回で参加は自由です。体力づくりの目的もありますが、個人的には早朝に外へ出るのが1番のご褒美です。

最近はプライベートの時間を部屋か車内、あるいは画面の前で過ごすことが多くなりました。ですので、外へ駆け出して輝く春の朝を、咲き乱れる花々と心地よい日差しの中、果てしなく広くエキサイティングな世界に向かって声を上げる。大粒の雨が全身を濡らし、雨水で重くなった靴が地面を打ち付ける、学生がおらずたった一人で走ったあの日が最高に生きた心地がしました。ずぶ濡れになりましたが、この2キロは楽しかったです。「寒くて濡れていて惨めなこともあれば、寒くて濡れているだけなこともある」とはよく言ったものです。全ては捉え方次第なのです。

早朝ランニングは自分のペースで走る余裕があり、イアン先生と小話をするか、参加した学生に声をかけることができます。走り終わるといつもスタートした時より気分はよくなっていて、それほど長い距離ではないので疲れより、得るエネルギーのほうが大きいです。

頻繁に参加する学生は強い根性、意思、自発性を見せてくれます。参加するより前日の夜遅くまで頑張ったから睡眠を選択する学生の努力を否定はしませんが、しっかり睡眠をとって早朝ランニングしたほうが捗ると思います。

今後、この早朝ランニングが習慣化し、さらには学校の伝統になることを願っています。できれば年に1度校内大会を開催できたら良いとも思っています。ぜひ学生には座って画面ばかり見るより、自発的に自身の健康を気遣って欲しいです。

その間、イアン先生と私、参加した学生たちは魂を呼び覚まして、その日を手中に収める喜びを楽しもうと思います。

こんにちは、デザイン＆ファブリケーションクラブの副顧問の伊藤です。今日は国際高専の全国高等専門学校プログラミングコンテスト参加について報告します（タイトルで盛大にネタバレしてますが）。全国高等専門学校プログラミングコンテスト（以下、高専プロコン）は全国の高専が参加するプログラムと、ICT作品のコンテストです。課題部門、自由部門、競技部門に分かれており、それぞれのテーマに沿って審査が行われます。今年度は白山麓キャンパスのデザイン＆ファブリケーションクラブから課題部門と競技部門にそれぞれ１チームずつ参加しました。課題部門のテーマは昨年と同じく「ICTを活用した地域活性化」で、競技部門は「踊って舞って回って」という囲碁のような陣取りゲームが種目です。１０月に都城高専で行われる本戦に参加するためには、予選の書類審査を突破しなければなりません。特に課題部門は例年６０弱の応募に対して２０チームしか通れない狭き門です。競技部門でも書類審査があります。その予選を何と、両部門で突破することができたのです。

課題部門チームは本丸さん（S2）、井上くん（S1）、塩谷くん（S1）、杉くん（S1）、田中くん（S1）の５名、競技部門チームは勝又くん（S2）、青木くん（S2）、深山くん（S2）の３名です。２年生と１年生だけのチームで上級生がメインの他の高専と渡り合うことは難しいかな、と当初は考えていたのですが、本当に一所懸命に頑張ってくれたので想像以上の結果を出してくれました。夜11時くらいまで残って資料作成している日が続いた時は、本当に間に合うのか？と思ってしまうこともありましたが、その努力が報われました。本当におめでとう、と言いたいです。ただ、本戦はこれからです。今一度気を引き締めて、本戦に向けて作品の完成度を上げていってほしいと思います。頑張れ！

私は高専生であるうちに何かしらの全力を出せる体験を学生にさせてあげたいと考えています。勉強であれ、スポーツであれ、趣味の活動であれ、全力を尽くすことが現在の自分の限界と、さらには伸びしろがわかると考えているからです。高専プロコンや全国高専ロボコンなどのコンテストはそのわかりやすい一例です。例え全力を出し尽くしても、敗けてしまう事もあります。ですが、全力を出した事、その経験が大事なのです。そして、学生達には全国の高専の高いレベルを肌で感じてほしいと思います。

最後に、資料作成の際に様々なアドバイスを頂いたり、遅くまで残って学生の活動をサポートして頂いた、デザイン＆ファブリケーションクラブの顧問の伊勢先生や金沢キャンパスの藤澤先生、田村先生にもこの場を借りてお礼申し上げます。

Hello. It's Ito, deputy coach of the Design & Fabrication club. Today I would like to announce that ICT has qualified for the National Kosen Programming Contest! The National Kosen Programming Contest (Kosen Procon) is a program in which Kosen schools (technical collages) participate and compete using information and communication technology. The contest is divided into three sections: the challenge section, free section, and competitive section. Each section is judged based on its individual theme. This year, two teams from the Hakusanroku campus Design & Fabrication club entered the challenge section and competitive section. The challenge section's theme is the same as last year: "regional revitalization using information and communication technology." In the competitive section, teams will compete at an original game called "Dance, dance, and twirl" similar to the territory capturing board game Igo. To participate in the national competition in October at Miyakonojo College, we first had to pass the document elimination stage. The challenge section is especially difficult because there are over 60 entries every year with only 20 seats available. Despite this, ICT was able to advance to the nationals in both sections!

The challenge section team consists of five students, Honmaru (S2), Inoue (S1), Shioya (S1), Sugi (S1), and Tanaka (S1) and the competitive team consists of the three students, Katsumata (S2), Aoki (S2), and Miyama (S2). At first I was worried that our challenge section team, which is mostly made up of first-year students, would struggle to compete against other teams that commonly consist of older students. However, they have put a lot of effort into the preparation and exceeded my expectations with their results. There were some days spent creating documents until 11 pm and I was sometime afraid we would not finish on time, but thankfully their efforts were came through. I express my congratulations to them. However, the true battle is yet to come. The team's next goal is to focus once more and finish the final product until the competition. Good luck!

My role, is to provide students an opportunity to try their hardest at something while they are students here. Whether that be academics, sports, or a hobby, I believe challenging yourself to the limit helps you understand your limits and find room for expanding them. The Kosen Procon or National Kosen Robocon tournaments are good examples. You can try your hardest and still lose. However, it's the experience of trying your hardest that is most important. It's also an opportunity for students to see the high level work of other Kosen schools.

Lastly, I would like to thank Ise sensei, the head coach of the Design & Fabrication club, and Fujisawa sensei and Tamura sensei of Kanazawa campus for providing us with advice for the documents and staying after hours to support the students.

Ito Meguru

“Technology increases at an exponential rate” was, at first, a phrase used to describe the accelerating improvement of computer transistor technology in the 20^th century. However, it has come to be a theme for many different technologies in the Digital Age. From horse driven carriages to self-driving cars or from room-sized computers to smartphones that fit in a pocket, simple useful technologies quickly grow into amazing inventions that surpass even the wildest of dreams. These technological marvels can only be made possible through the hard work of scientists, engineers, and innovators with creativity and imagination.

At ICT, the students develop their creativity and imagination by experimenting with some of the innovative devices that school has to offer. Students are challenged to create unique designs and contraptions in their classes, and are able to meet those challenges by utilizing the 3D printers, laser cutters, and the other devices that the school provides.

The newest tool for the students to utilize are small-but-powerful drones, capable of being easily controlled through a smartphone app and able to record both photo and video. The participants of one of ICT’s summer programs had a great time learning about drone technology and exploring their countless possibilities, but it’s not all fun and games! Soon, the 2^nd year Computer Skills students will be faced with the daunting task of programming the drones to automatically perform search-and-rescue missions. Hopefully the students can use their knowledge and imagination to tackle this problem and grow as future global innovators.

「テクノロジーは指数関数的に進歩している」は、コンピューターの半導体技術を指すフレーズとして20世紀に使われ始めました。しかし、現在のデジタル時代では、様々なテクノロジーに広く使われるようになっています。馬車から自動運転する自動車、部屋の大きさのコンピューターからポケットに収まるスマートフォン、シンプルで使いやすいテクノロジーは目覚ましい進化を遂げ、私たちの想像を大きく超えていきます。これらは科学者、エンジニア、発明家の大変な努力と想像力があって初めて実現しました。

国際高専では学校の様々な設備を使ってイノベーション創出をしてもらい、学生の想像力を伸ばしています。授業ではユニークなデザインや装置を作る課題が出されます。学生たちは3Dプリンターやレーザーカッター等、学校に設置されているデバイスを利用してこれらの課題を達成します。

最近導入された新しいツールが、小型ながらパワフルなドローンです。これはスマホのアプリで簡単に操縦ができ、写真と動画の両方が撮影可能です。サマープログラムに参加した生徒たちはドローン技術がもたらす無限の可能性を大いに楽しみながら学んでいました。しかし、国際高専の学生に用意された課題は楽しい遊びばかりではありません。まもなく2年のコンピュータースキルズの授業では、プログラミングを使ってドローンに自動で探索およびレスキューミッションを行わせる難関課題が課せされます。学生たちがこれまでの知識と想像力を使ってこの課題を乗り越え、未来のグローバルイノベーターに一歩近づくことを願っています。

Hey, it's Jonathan. Here is another report from Hakusanroku campus. On June 22 Saturday, the first and second year students had a special field trip to discover and learn more about the nature and history of the Hakusanroku area. We visited Ichinose Visitor Center to hike and learn about the wildlife of Mt. Hakusan, and explored Shiramine village and visited Rinsaiji Temple to learn about the history of the area. After dinner, the Nature & Adventure club joined a local event to go see fireflies. It was a jam-packed day, here at Hakusanroku.

Ichinose Visitor Center is the starting point for those climbing Mt. Hakusan from the Shiramine area. There are some hiking courses, displays of wildlife, an onsen ryokan, and a camping area next to the nearby river. Here we took a short hike into the mountains which lead to a vantage point where you can see Mt. Hakusan. Our guide, Mr. Shinichi Hiramatsu is an expert of the nature of this area, and pointed out various plants and insects as we hiked. It was drizzling slightly. However, we were happily surprised to find Mt. Hakusan beautifully visible from the vantage point.

After the hike, we returned to the visitor center to learn about the wildlife and history of Ichinose. Mr. Hiramatsu explained that Ichinose used to be a bustling town, famous for its many onsen baths and people climbing Mt. Hakusan. However, in 1934 a devastating flood hit Ichinose, destroying everything. This flood was due that year's heavy snowfall melting, and there is even a legend that to this day a thousand snakes are trapped under the eternal snow covering one of the lakes on top of Mt. Hakusan and a flood will occur again if the eternal snow ever thaws. Mr. Hiramatsu also showed many plants and animals of Mt. Hakusan, including how to distinguish plants and trees apart, videos of bears, wild boars, monkeys, antelopes, and gold eagles, and live lizards and insects he brought to the center. On the way to Shiramine, we stopped at the "Million Kan Rock." (1 Kan = 3.75kg) This huge rock was pushed 3 km down the river during the historical flood and stands as a landmark as a testament of its shear power.

In the afternoon, we moved to Shiramine village to investigate and learn about the area. Shiramine serves as a hub for people climbing Mt. Hakusan and has many historic and sightseeing-worthy locations. First, students explored the area on foot. Many students decided to visit the popular Snowman Cafe for some dessert. Fully refreshed, we next visited Rinsaiji temple to listen to the history of Mt. Hakusan and view the many Buddha statues displayed there. Mt. Hakusan was always a focus of worship and these statues used to exist on the mountain peak until the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism policy was deployed in 1863. At this time, many Buddha statues were brought down from the mountain to avoid being destroyed and eight such statues are on display here.

Later in the evening, there was an bonus event. Members of the Nature & Adventure club participated in a local event to see fireflies. This is an annual event held by the Oguchi Community Center. The ICT students and members of the local community traveled to the Dainichigawa river in Torigoe, which is about 15 minutes from the Hakusanroku campus by car. There were a surprising number of fireflies and the participants spent time taking pictures, catching, and simply observing a beautiful sight. Mr. Nakamura, a local and expert of fireflies, gave lectures on the insects and answered the students' questions. Some ICT students made friends with the local elementary school kids and everyone enjoyed a pleasant evening.

June 22 was a long and eventful day. Students learned much about the nature and history of the Hakusanroku area while also having a lot of fun. This is not our first time joining a local event or visiting a local sight of interest and I am continuously convinced that our location is crucial to becoming part of the local community; in addition to the convenience of being close and the ability to participate in such events at night thanks to our dormitories. I hope students had fun and found something of interest in the local area, which will help them create innovation in the future.

ジョナサンです。白山麓キャンパスからレポートをお届けします。6月22日（土）1～2年の学生が白山麓の自然や歴史について学ぶ特別活動を行いました。自然については市ノ瀬ビジターセンター、歴史については白峰村と林西寺をそれぞれ訪れ、地域についての理解を深めました。夕食後にはNature & Adventureクラブのメンバーが地元のホタル観察会に参加し、充実した一日を過ごしました。

市ノ瀬ビジターセンターは白峰側の白山登山口として位置しており、ハイキングコース、キャンプ場、様々な展示物などがあり、白山温泉の永井旅館が隣接しています。ここではまず1時間ほどのハイキングを行いました。ガイドを務めた平松新一さんはこの地域の自然のエキスパートで、道中にある様々な植物や動物について解説をしました。小雨が降っていましたが、到着した見晴らし台から白山を望むことができました。

ハイキングの後、ビジターセンターに戻って市ノ瀬の自然や歴史について平松さんから講話を受けました。市ノ瀬は以前は登山客が立ち寄る賑やかな温泉街でしたが、1934年（昭和9年）7月11日の大洪水によって壊滅的な被害を受けて無くなりました。洪水は前の年の大雪と豪雨が重なったことが原因でした。現在も白山頂上の湖を覆う万年雪の下には千匹の蛇が封印されており、溶ければ再び洪水が起きるという伝説も残されています。平松さんは講話の中で白山の木や植物の見分け方、熊、イノシシ、猿、カモシカ、イヌワシを捉えた映像、持参したトカゲや昆虫などを学生たちに見せました。市ノ瀬ビジターセンターから白峰に向かう途中、川沿いにある「百万貫の岩」に立ち寄りました。この大岩は大洪水の時に下流へ3キロ押し流されて現在の位置に着いたとされ、洪水の恐ろしさを物語る歴史的価値から石川県の天然記念物に指定されています。

午後は白峰の散策を行いました。白峰は白山の玄関口として観光客が一年中訪れ、観光名所もたくさんあります。多くの学生は有名な雪だるまカフェを訪れ、スイーツや飲み物を味わいました。その後は林西寺を訪問し、白山の歴史や安置されている白山下山仏について話を聞きました。白山は以前より信仰の対象とされ、頂上に仏像がいくつも設置されておりましたが、明治の神仏分離政策による破壊を免れるため白山から下ろされた8体の仏像がこの林西寺に安置されています。

日没後、Nature & Adventureクラブのメンバーは地元のホタル観察会に参加しました。このイベントは毎年尾口公民館によって開催されている恒例行事です。白山麓キャンパスから車で15分くらいの距離にある鳥越の大日川へ移動し、地元の方々と1時間ほどホタルを観察しました。驚くほどたくさんのホタルがおり、学生たちは写真を撮ったり、ホタルを捕まえたり、美しい光景を眺めたりしていました。また、ホタルに詳しい地元の中村さんが生態について解説したり、学生の質問に答えたりしました。地元の小学生と遊ぶICT学生もいて、皆が楽しい時間を過ごしました。

6月22日は長く充実した一日となりました。学生たちも楽しみながら白山麓の自然や歴史について学べたようです。このように地元のイベントに積極的に参加できたり、深く地域に触れる機会が多いところから、白山麓キャンパスが地域の中に存在していることの重要性を再確認しました。加えて、ボーディングスクールで学生寮を備えているおかげでこのような遅い時間のイベントにも参加できるメリットを感じました。学生たちが楽しみながらこの地域に興味を持ち、後のイノベーション創出に繋げる日を楽しみにしています。
