September 14, 2021　ICT探検隊、瀬波川を遡上す

N＆A部顧問のKTBです。9月12日（日）にN&A部は瀬波川沢登りを実施しました。瀬波川は白山麓キャンパスから5㎞ほど北を流れる手取川の支流です。手取川本流は白山で崩れた砂が混じって濁りがありますが、瀬波川は澄み切っていてまさに清流です（下の写真で実感していただけると思います）。

部員は12時30分の集合後、白山麓少年自然の家へ移動、ヘルメット、ライフジャケットなどの装備を借りて現地へ向かいます。白山里温泉前の駐車場で下車して川原へ、浅瀬に足を浸したところで、尾張コーチから川中での危険についてレクチャーを受けた後、いよいよ沢登りのスタートです。沢登りではコース取りは自由、岩場を歩いたり、泳いだり（とはいえ水温は18℃、そのうちに震えが止まらなくなります）、ロープをつかんで難所を越えたり、学生たちは思い思いのコースを進みます。やがて、小さなプールに翡翠色の清水をたたえた場所へたどり着きました。

ここが本日一番の景勝スポット。学生たちは次々と岩の上からジャンプ。エメラルドのしぶきを跳ね上げながら水中に身を躍らせました。帰りの車中でフィリップ先生から感想を尋ねられた木下観くんは笑顔で、“The coldest experience of my life.”と答えていました。

It's KTB, the N&A Club supervisor. On September 12 (Sun), the N&A Club held the annual Senami rivier gorge climbing activity. Senami river is about 5 kilometers from the Hakusanroku Campus, and is a tributary to the larger Tedori river.Tedori river is often muddy with sand broken off from Mt. Hakusan, but Senami river is clear and beautiful (as you can see in the pictures above).

Members gathered at 12:30 pm and moved to Hakusanroku Shonen-no-ie to gear up with helmets and lifejackets. When everyone was ready, we drove to the parking lot in front of Hakusanri Onsen and made our descent to the river bed. After getting our feet used to the water, Owari coach gave a lecture about the dangers in the river before we began our journey. There is no set path for gorge climbing. You can walk along the rocky bank, swim (this however will give you the shivers before long because the water temperature was only 18 degrees celsius), and use ropes to pull yourself along. Each student chose paths that they liked, and we finally reached a small pool of jade green crystal clear water.

This beautiful site was the payoff of our journey. Students took turns jumping of the rocks above, diving into the water with emerald colored splashes. When asked by Philip sensei on the way home, Kan Kinoshita remarked that it was "The coldest experience of my life" with a big grin on his face.

August 27, 2021 イングリッシュカフェ

こんにちは！英語科のジェームス・テイラーです。

今年度も新型コロナウイルスと真夏の暑さのせいで、僕が毎月尾口公民館でやるイベント「イングリッシュカフェ」はなかなかできません。イングリッシュカフェは地域の方のためにお茶飲みながら楽しく英語を勉強するイベントです。僕は毎月楽しみにしているけど、今年度、6月しか「イングリッシュカフェ」ができませんでした。

今年度、旅行に役に立つ英語を勉強しようと思って、公民館のスタッフと一緒にいろんなシチュエーションを考えました。6月のシチュエーションはお店でお土産を買うことでした。1時間の中の前半は皆で簡単なフレーズを学んで、練習しました。ちょうど皆疲れているときに休憩して、そして本番！公民館のスタッフはお菓子をたくさん買って、紙のお金を印刷して、そして袋を準備してくれたので、駄菓子屋さんごっこができました。皆順番に来て、英語で好きなお菓子を買いました。大人でも、保育所の子供達でも楽しかったです。

次のイングリッシュカフェは9月に予定しています。次回のシチュエーションは空港と機内を予定しています。地域の人たちとこのようなコミュニケーションの機会があると嬉しいです。

Hello everyone! Every month I lead an event called English Café at Oguchi Community Centre. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic and the extreme summer heat, we have only been able to hold one event in the 2021 academic year.

This year, the community centre staff and I decided to focus on English that would be useful for travelling. For June’s English Café, the situation was buying souvenirs in a shop. For the first half of the hour, we learnt and practiced useful phrases together. At the halfway point we took a quick break, then came the really fun part: the community centre staff had worked really hard to buy a selection of snacks, print off paper “money”, and prepare paper bags so we could pretend we were in an old-fashioned sweetshop! Everyone took turns to come up and “buy” their favourite snacks using the phrases they had just learnt. Everyone, from older people to nursery-age children, had fun.

The next English Café is scheduled for September, and we are planning to focus on useful phrases for the airport and on an aeroplane. I’m really happy to have this kind of opportunity to interact with other members of the local community.

N＆A部顧問のKTBです。7月16日（金）にN&A部は白山登山を実施しました。早朝５時に白山麓キャンパスを出発、６時には登山口の別当出合に到着しました。登山届を提出してから、今回は昨年歩いた砂防新道ではなく、よりハードな（そのかわり眺望絶佳かつ混雑のない）観光新道を選びました。学生はS1大石意丸くん、奥山眞宙くん、木下観くん、草本留嘉寿くん、S2勝方正宗くん、酒井瞭くん、中里優斗部長の7名が御前峰山頂を目指します。

観光新道は尾根道ですから、常に眺望が広がり、涼風が背中を押してくれます。ササユリ（花言葉は「上品」）の優しく甘い香りの漂う登山道を部員たちはぐいぐいと元気に登ってゆきます。殿ケ池避難小屋でたっぷりと休憩を取り、10時30分には弥陀ヶ原で記念撮影、11時には室堂に到着しました。学生たちはカフェテリアのお弁当に加えて、各自持参したカップ麺を美味しそうに掻き込みます。12時に出発と伝えてあったのですが、11時40分には待ちきれず山頂に向けて再出発、12時30分には青空に白い雲が吹き乱れる山頂で全員そろって笑顔の記念撮影となりました。

下山は膝への負担を考えて、緩やかな砂防新道を選択しました。天気予報からは途中で雨に降られるのを覚悟して臨んだ山行でしたが、結局、雨には一滴も遭うことなく、部員たちは皆真っ赤に日焼けして帰ってきました。中には翌朝6時に自転車で3時間かけて海へ向かった強者（留嘉寿＆優斗）も。

KTB, coach of the N&A Club here. The N&A Club held our annual Mt. Hakusan climb on July 16 (Fri). We left the Hakusanroku Campus at 5 am and arrived at the starting point (Betto-deai) at 6. After submitting a climbing registration form, we began our climb. This year we chose the more advanced but more beautiful and less crowded Kanko-shindo instead of the Sabo-shindo that we used last year. Student members that participated were Oishi Imaru, Okuyama Mahiro, Kan Kinoshita, Lucas Kusamoto (S1), Katsukata Masamune, Sakei Ryo, and the captain Nakazato Yuma (S2).

Kanko-shindo is a path along the mountain ridge, so there is always a beautiful view and a cool breeze to push you along. The sweet fragrance of Japanese lilies (language of flower: elegant) surrounded us as we pushed on steadily up the mountain. We rested at Tono-ga-ike shelter hut, took a group photo at Mida-ga-hara at 10:30, and arrived at Murodo at 11 o’clock. Students happily dug into their packed lunch prepared by the cafeteria and cup noodles their brought with them. Initially, we planned to leave at noon, but the students were so eager to get going, so we began our final assent at 11:40. By 12:30, everyone had reached the peak with blue skies and bustling white clouds and showed big smiles for the camera.

To go nice on our knees, we chose the less steep Sabo-shindo on the way down. The weather forecast predicted some rain so we came prepared but never saw a single drop the whole way. Instead, students’ skin was red from sun burn. Still, two invincible students (Lucas and Yuma) had enough strength for a three hour bike ride to the ocean the very next day.

July 19, 3年生が永光寺で参禅体験

　3年生が「生活と文化」の学外授業で洞谷山永光寺（とうこくさん ようこうじ）を訪れ、参禅体験を行いました。

　永光寺は曹洞宗のお寺です。白木造りの山門をくぐると、さっそく僧侶の方々とすれ違い、学生たちは少々緊張したようでした。方丈様より合掌や叉手（さしゅ）、歩き方など基本的な作法を教わった後、本堂に移り、座禅の心構えや座り方についての講義を受けました。そして、文殊菩薩座像が安置された僧堂に移り、40分ほど座禅を行いました。壁に向かい、鐘の音や小鳥のさえずりを感じながら、姿勢や呼吸を整えることで心を整えることを試みました。

終えてから、
　「足がしびれた。毎日しないと」と苦笑いの井上くん。
　「10分くらいだと思った」とすっきりした表情の畠中くん。
　「座ることに意味があるのかな」と興味が尽きないようすの佐藤くん。
　「僕のとき、強く打ってください」と事前に手加減なしの警策（きょうさく）をお願いしていた加藤くんは、「めちゃくちゃ痛かった」と言いつつも笑顔でした。

　最後に、お茶とお菓子をいただきながら、方丈様よりお話がありました。
　いのちはいのちから生まれ、言葉があって「わたし」があり、そしてその「わたし」は一回きりなのだ、というお話でした。そして、

　　古池や蛙飛びこむ水の音
　　よく見れば薺（なずな）花咲く垣根かな

いずれも有名な芭蕉の句ですが、これは一体何を伝えているのか、という「宿題」をいただきました。

　短い時間でしたが、日常を離れ、自然と歴史を感じながら、静かに自分を見つめ直した学外授業でした。

The third year students visited Dokosan-Yokoji temple as fieldwork to practice Zen meditation for their Global Life and Culture class.

Yokoji is a temple of the Soto school. After walking through the wooden sanmon (main gate), we passed many Buddhist monks and I could sense the students nervousness. We learned basic manners from Mr. Manjo such as the correct hand positions for praying and meditating, and how to walk. Then, we returned to the main temple and listened to a lecture about the correct mindset and how to sit. Finally, we moved to the monastery that holds the Buddhist statue Monju-Bosatsu (文殊菩薩座像) and meditated for forty minutes. The students' goal was to find peace in their heart by sitting while facing the wall, appreciating the sound of the bell and birds, and concentrating on their posture and breath.

Some comments by the students after the meditation:
Inoue-san said "My legs are stiff. I need to do this more often" with a wryly smile.
Hatanaka-san looked refreshed and said "It only felt like 10 minutes"
Sato-san was still contemplating the experience and voiced the question "I wonder what the purpose of sitting is?"
Kato-san, who requested "Don't hesitate to strike me harder when its my turn" later remarked that "It hurt A LOT" with a big smile on his face as always.

Afterward, we drank tea and ate sweats, and listened to Majo-san talk about how life is born from life, words exist, therefore "I" am, and that "I" exists only once. Also the following haiku:

Both are famous haikus by Basho. We were given the homework to contemplate what he wanted to convey with them.

It was a short field trip, but the students were able to leave their busy routine to appreciate nature and history, and observe themselves within.

国際理工学科2年の山崎史依です。先月、エンジニアリングデザインの授業の一環として山立会さんにお邪魔し、代表の有本さんのご講話を聞いた後に、羊の毛刈りを体験させていただきました。私が有本さんのお話しで一番印象に残った点は、「なぜ山立会で羊を飼おうと思ったのか」というチャプターでした。私は16年間石川で暮らしていて、石川の魅力を感じたことがありませんでしたし、どうすれば石川県というブランドとして成長できるかも考えませんでした。しかし、有本さんは「特産の肉が無い」・「白山麓に遊べる場所が無い」・「獣害や雪が関係ない」と提示していました。私はそれを聞いて、今までの石川県がやってきたようなすでにある名産品や伝統の押し売りとは違う全く新しく県外の観光客が共感できるアイデアだと感じ、感動しました。

また、有本さんが言っていたようにブランド化するにはアニマルウェルフェアなどのステータスだけでなく、デザインやロゴ、コンセプトが重要という点にも深く共感しました。それに対するアファフさんの提案にも、とっても需要があると思いました。

羊の毛刈りでは、見ているだけだと簡単そうでしたが、実際にやってみるとバリカンが重いうえに振動が自分に伝わってすごく難しかったです。だけど、何度もやって自信をつけるとするすると毛が刈れてとっても気持ちがよかったです。また、やっていくうちにもっとうまくなりたいと思ったり、羊に対しての愛情が生まれました。また機会があれば挑戦したいです。

• 6月の会社見学とひつじの毛刈りのジャーナル

Hello, I'm Shii Yamazaki, a second-year student of the Department of Science and Technology. Last month, we visited Yamadachi-kai as part of the Engineering Design class. We listened to Arimoto CEO's lecture and experienced sheep shearing. The thing I remember the most from Arimoto-san's lecture was why he decided to start Yamadachi-kai's sheep business. I have lived in Ishikawa for sixteen years, but I never thought about its good points or how the Ichikawa brand could grow. However, Arimoto-san gave the reasons "Ishikawa has no special livestock", "there is no place to play in Hakusanroku", and "sheep are unaffected by wild animals and snow." Hearing this, I realized that it was different from any other local speciality or tradition in Ishikawa prefecture has tried or forced on to tourists. I felt like it is a new perspective that tourists can relate to.

Also as Arimoto-san said, not only are statuses such as animal welfare important to create a new brand, but also design, logo, and concept. I believe the suggestions that Afaf proposed have a lot of demand too.

The sheep shearing looked easy at first, but was actually very difficult because the clipper was heavy and the vibration transmitted to me. However, it felt good when I could smoothly shear the wool off the sheep after I had a lot of practice and got used to it. Also, I fell in love with the sheep and wanted to be become better at it. I want to try again in the future.

June 23, 2021 Report from Hakusanroku (June)

ジョナサンです！６月の白山麓キャンパスは気温も上がり、汗ばむ季節になってきました。国際高専１、２年生は校舎の内外で様々な活動に励んでいます。最近あったイベントを３つ、レポートします。

６月１日（火）、エンジニアリングデザインIIAのアグリテック班がMRO北陸放送の取材を受けました。２年生のエンジニアリングデザインでは地域の課題解決を行っており、アグリテック班は前年のプロジェクトを引き継いで、AIによる獣害対策システムを製作しています。今年の２年生の目標はAIが認識した猿を追い払うシステムの実装で、取材の中では白山麓キャンパスと道路を挟んだ向かいの休耕田で地元の方に猿被害の規模や望ましい撃退方法の聞き取りをするシーンや、目指すゴールについて語るシーンが撮影されました。この内容は６月９日（水）の「レオスタ」で放送されました。本プロジェクトは昨年度に一般社団法人電気学会「U-21学生研究発表会」で最優秀賞を受賞しており、その後の成果に注目が集まっています。

6月３日（木）、エンジニアリングデザインIIAのアグリビジネス班の２年生４名が白山麓キャンパスから近い木滑地区でひつじの放牧を行っている山立会にお邪魔して、会社見学とひつじの毛刈り体験をしました。アグリビジネス班は白山麓ブランドのさつまいも「高専べにはるか」の生産・販売プロジェクトを行っており、同じく新規事業立ち上げをした山立会から農業経営のノウハウを学ぶために科目担当の山崎先生がセッティングを行いました。

山立会のひつじ事業は石川県立大学の石田名誉教授の「耕作放棄地放牧で生産されたラム肉の地産地消による地域活性化の課題研究」を引き継ぐ形で誕生したビジネスです。代表の有本勲氏は白山麓特産の肉がないこと、昼間に観光客が遊ぶ場所がないこと、獣害や豪雪の影響を受けないことなどからラム肉に可能性を感じて、事業展開に踏み切りました。有本さんが学生にしてくれたプレゼンではひつじ飼育の出産から出荷までの年間スケジュール、収支計画、５年後に収益５００万円を目指す長期目標、必要な畜舎や機械などの設備などを解説し、そのための資金調達で行ったクラウドファンディング、補助金申請、付加価値によるラム肉の単価アップなどを紹介しました。また、ひつじ餌やり体験、毛刈り体験、BBQ用ラム肉販売によって白山麓地域の観光を盛り上げていきたい旨を語りました。学生は簡単に儲からないとわかっていながら様々なチャレンジをする有本さんの話をメモを取りながら真剣に聞いていました。また、プレゼンのあとには１０分間の質疑応答の時間があり、熱心な学生が熱心に質問や提案をしていました。

毛刈り体験をした学生は「見ているだけだと簡単そうでしたが、バリカンが重いうえに振動が伝わって難しかった」「何度もやってするすると毛が刈れたときは気持ちよかった」「羊に対して愛情が生まれました」と語っていました。

６月２０日（日）、ネイチャー＆アドベンチャークラブが鷲走ヶ岳へハイキングに出かけました。鷲走ヶ岳は1,097mの山で、白山麓キャンパスから車で１０分ほどのところに登山口があります。メンバーは１、２年生５名、山崎先生、潟辺先生、フィリップ先生、尾張コーチ、私の計１０名でした。コースの大部分は森林の中を通っていくため、涼しい日陰に守られて快調に進みました。休憩時には尾張コーチが柑橘系の香りがする「クロモジ」、樹皮が熊によって剝がされた木、コアジサイの花など、山の見どころを解説しました。白山麓キャンパスを出発したのは８時半で、山頂へ到着したのは11時15分頃でした。晴れていれば白山が望める場所ですが、この日は雲がかかっていて見えませんでした。早い昼食を食べたあと、白抜山という隣にある891mの山へ登ってから下山しました。学生たちは元気いっぱいで、山道を走ったり、休憩時に木に登ったりして、有り余る体力を存分に発揮していました。来月には白山登山を控えている同クラブメンバーにとって、良い体慣らしとなったようです。

Hi, it's Jonathan, the cameraman. June has brought warm weather to Hakusanroku and I see more and more people wearing t-shirts as summer approaches. Here are three events that happened in the past month. 

On June 1 (Tue), The Agri-tech team was interviewed by MRO Hokuriku Broadcasting during Engineering Design IIA class. The Agri-tech team has succeeded last year's project, and is creating a system to protect crops from wild monkeys using AI. This year's second year students aim to implement a function to drive away monkeys detected by the system. The television crew filmed scenes of the students asking local farmers about the magnitude of damage on their crops and what they think is the best method to drive monkeys away, and scenes of them explaining their goals of the year. The program was broadcasted on "Leosuta" on June 9 (Wed). Last year's Agri-tech team won the highest award of the "U-21 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan" and the level of attention on this project is growing.

On June 3 (Thu), four second year students of the Agri-business teams visited Yamadachikai, which has lately begun herding sheep in Kinameri district near Hakusanroku Campus. The Agri-business team is growing and selling local branded sweet potatoes "Kosen Beni Haruka" and Yamazaki sensei organized this visit to listen to the representative of Yamadachikai talk about his experience staring a agricultural business in Hakusanroku.

Yamadachikai's sheep business began when they were approached by the team of Ishida professor of Ishikawa Prefectural University who was doing research on the possibility of a sustainable business model selling lamb meat herded and sold in the local area. Arimoto-san, the representative of Yamadachikai, accepted this offer after agreeing that Hakusanroku lacked local branded livestock and daytime activities for tourists. Also, sheep are unaffected by the harsh winter season and wild animals in the area, which are difficulties of other products. In the presentation he gave to the students, Arimoto-san explained the annual schedule of selling lamb meat, the company's table of income and expenditure, their long-term goal of a profit of 5 million yen in five years, the necessary facilities they plan to purchase, etc. To accomplish this, Arimoto-san has utilized crowdfunding, applied for financial support from the government, and tried multiple methods to increase the price of their meat. He also plans to contribute to the local tourist scene by letting people feed and shear the sheep, and selling BBQ meat to campers. Arimoto-san understood that making a profit with sheep wasn't going to be easy in Hakusanroku, but he took on the challenge and came up with ideas to create a successful business. The second year students listened intently and took notes. There also was a QA session after the lecture that lasted ten minutes as Arimoto-san and students exchanged ideas.

After the lecture, students tried out shearing the sheep. Later, they commented "It looked easy at first but the electric clipper was heavy and difficult to keep steady due to the vibration, but once I got used to it, it felt good as the wool came off" and "I grew fond of the sheep."

On June 20 (Sun), the Nature & Adventure Club went hiking at Mt. Wasso-ga-take, which is a mountain of an altitude of 1,097 meters with a hiking course about ten minutes by car from Hakusanroku Campus. Participants were five club members, Yamazaki sensei, Katabe sensei, Philip sensei, Owari coach, and myself; a total of ten people. Most of the hiking course is through the forest, which shaded us from the hot sun. During breaks, Owari coach showed us wild herbs such as "Kuromoji", trees that bears had peeled the bark off, and flowers such as koajisai (Hydrangea hirta). We left Hakusanroku Campus at 8:30 am and reached the top of Wasso-ga-take around 11:15. Usually you can see Mt. Hakusan from this point. However, sadly it was hidden by low clouds. We ate an early lunch and headed to a neighboring mountain called Shironuki-yama (891m) before descending back down the trail. Students were full of energy and sometimes ran down the path or climbed trees along the way. Next month, they plan to climb Mt. Hakusan itself so this hike was a nice warm up ahead of time.

　S2の勝方正宗です。コロナ情勢悪化により学生が帰省できなくなったゴールデンウイーク、N&A部では新歓ハイキングを実施しました。

　５月２日（日）の午前は雨のため予定を変更して、白山麓キャンパス内のメーカースタジオで、尾張由輝也コーチからロープワークとナイフを使った竹細工の講習を受けました。ロープワークではもやい結びや自在結び、テグス結びなどの面白い結び方を学びました。これらはエンジニアリングの授業の農作業でも使えるので、習ってよかったです。ナイフを使った竹細工は、竹を加工して箸や皿などいろいろなものができることに驚きました。昼は顧問の潟辺先生の家で先生手作りの美味しいステーキカレーをいただきました。潟辺先生は男前だと思いました。雨の音を聞きながら薪ストーブで暖まり、煙突の効果などについて話し合ったのも面白かったです。

　午後は鳥越の阿手地区にある大日ダムを見学しました。雨の中のダム湖沿いのハイキングは非日常感があり、寒さの中でもとても楽しめました。斜面にあふれ出た雨が作る小滝にわざと頭を入れて髪を濡らし、皆びしょびしょになりながら歩きました。最後は手がかじかみ、靴も濡れて体も冷え切りましたが、温泉で温まったおかげで誰も風邪をひきませんでした。

　夕方から雨が強まり、気温も更に下がってきたので、テントは体育館の２階に張りました。IPadで焚火の動画を映し出しながらのギターの弾き語り、ハンモックで揺られていたのが心地よかったです。皆でポーカーや大富豪などのトランプゲームも楽しみました。今回は雨でしたが、次回は天気のいい日に野外でやってみたいです。夜に小腹が空いたなと思っていたら、看護師の上野さんからおにぎりの差し入れをいただきました。とても美味しかったです。ありがとうございます。

　翌日の３日（月）は嬉しいことに天候が回復し、青空の下、さわやかな涼風に吹かれながら、鳥越城山に登ることができました。山頂からは素晴らしい眺めで、手取川が削ってこの地が形成された様子が一望に見て取れました。途中、尾張コーチから山菜などについてのレクチャーを受けました。尾張コーチは山菜にも知識が豊富で、とても勉強になります。さすが東大農学部出身です。国際高専は素晴らしい自然環境に囲まれていますが、先生方もユニークな人材が集まっていると思います。体育のフィリップ先生はNZ出身で編み物もできます。美大出身の小高先生のビジュアルアーツの授業はとても興味深くためになります。歴史文化の上田先生は元プロテニスプレーヤーという希有の経歴です。そんな先生方の特技をもっと活かし、国際高専の強みをアピールすることで、たくさんの後輩が入学してきて、にぎやかで楽しい学園になると思います。

　I'm S2 Masamune Katsukata. During the Golden Week holidays, when students could not return home due to COVID-19, the N&A Club held a welcome hiking event for the new members.

　May 2 (Sun) morning was rainy, so we changed our plans and Owari coach taught us rope work and bamboo craft using a knife in the Maker Studio. We learned interesting knots such as the bowline knot, taut-line hitch, and fisherman's knot. These knots will come in handy when doing farm work for Engineering Design class, so I am happy that I learned them. For the bamboo craft, I was surprised that you can make so many things with bamboo. We ate delicious homemade stake curry at Katabe sensei's house. It was super cool of him to make us lunch like that. It was also fun to talk about stuff like the effects of a chimney while listening to the sound of rain in front of a warm fireplace.

　In the afternoon, we viewed the Dainichi dam in the Ate district of Torigoe. Hiking along the reservoir in the rain was an extraordinary experience that I enjoyed very much, even though I was cold. We found a small waterfall and everyone stuck their head in. We were all shivering and our shoes were soaking wet by the time we got back to ICT. But we warmed up in the onsen and no one caught a cold.

　It started to rain harder and the temperature dropped in the evening, so we set up tent in the second floor of the gym. We listened to the sound of Katabe sensei's guitar in front of a fire shown on an iPad, and relaxed in a hammock. It was very nice and cozy. We also enjoyed playing cards. I hope we can camp outside next time. Just as we felt a little hungry before going to bed, nurse Ueno-san brought us some rice balls. They were delicious. Thank you so much.

　Thankfully, the following morning (Monday, May 3) was sunny and we could enjoy blue skies and the cool breeze on our hike up the mountain to Torigoe Castle ruins. The view from the top was beautiful and I could see at a glance how Tedori River carved this landscape. On the way, Owari coach gave us lectures about mountain herbs. He knows a lot about mountain herbs and it was very educational to listen to him. Exactly what you would expect from someone who studied agriculture at Tokyo University. I think that ICT is not only surrounded by wonderful nature, but also has no lack of unique teachers and staff. Philip sensei, the PE teacher from New Zealand can knit. Kodaka sensei, who studied art in university, teaches an interesting and informative Visual Arts class. Ueda sensei, the history teacher actually used to be a professional tennis player. I think we should utilize the teachers' unique talents and advertise ICT's strong points to the world. This way, many new students will come and ICT will become a lively and fun school.

Hello, it's Jonathan, the camera man! April has turned into May, and the weather is almost perfect here at the Hakusanroku Campus. I have gathered pictures of the first and second year students and some of their major activities in the past weeks. Enjoy!

Sports Day

On May 1, the two PE teachers, Takimoto sensei and Philip sensei held a sports event in the gym. Students were not able to return home during the Golden Week holidays, and many events such as this were created to make the days as enjoyable as possible. This time, the sports were badminton and volleyball. In the badminton portion, Philip sensei introduced a new level system. All students start at level one. You level up by defeating someone in your same level or higher, to a max level of four. You can play as many games as you like with anyone you choose. This system seemed to suit the students and the three courts were constantly occupied by players challenging each other. The volleyball portion were games between the students and teachers. I apologize for not taking any pictures of the volleyball portion because I was playing the whole time.

5月1日（土）は保健体育の瀧本先生とフィリップ先生が企画したスポーツデイが体育館で行われました。今年の１，２年生はゴールデンウイーク中に帰省できませんでしたので、代わりに先生や学生が休日を楽しめるように様々なイベントを企画しました。このスポーツデイもそのひとつです。今回の種目はバドミントンとバレーボールでした。バドミントンでは、フィリップ先生が新たな「レベルシステム」を導入しました。このやり方では、参加者全員がレベル１からスタートします。その後、自分と同じか上のレベルの人と対戦して勝利するとレベルがひとつ上がります。制限時間内であれば誰と何回対戦するかは自由です。最高レベルは４で、制限時間内にどこまでレベルアップできるかを競います。この新しいシステムは学生たちに好評のようで、３つのコートは常に楽しそうな学生で埋まっていました。バレーボールの時間では学生と教職員のオールスターチーム同士が対戦しました。私は教職員チームに参加していたため、残念ながら写真はありません。

Camping Indoors

On May 2, the Nature & Adventure Club used the whole day to craft, hike, camp, and do all sorts of outdoor stuff. Sadly, the weather forecast was rainy but the club members improvised and enjoyed their first club activity anyway. They did ropework, bamboo crafting, and ate curry and rice for lunch at KTB sensei's house. In the afternoon, they went hiking near Dainichi dam in Torigoe before returning to ICT. Originally, they planned to camp outside on school grounds. However, the rain and wind was too strong and they made the brave choice to camp in the second floor of the gym. Jokes aside, this turned out to be not a bad decision and they spent the evening chatting, listening to KTB sensei's guitar, and playing cards by a digital campfire. (How ICT is that!) 5月2日（日）、ネイチャー＆アドベンチャークラブが様々な活動を丸一日かけて行いました。天候は残念ながら雨でしたが、メンバーは予定を修正しながらもアウトドアをエンジョイしました。午前中はロープワークや竹細工体験を行い、その後、潟辺先生の自宅でおいしいカレーをいただきました。午後は鳥越にある大日ダム見学のハイキングツアーを行いました。本来はキャンパス敷地内にテントを張ってキャンプをする予定でしたが、あまりにも雨風がひどかったため、代わりに体育館の2階部分に拠点を移動する英断を下しました。これが意外とグッドアイデアで、良い雰囲気の中、潟辺先生のギターを聴きながらハンモックでくつろいだり、タブレットに映したデジタルのキャンプファイヤーを囲んでトランプで遊んだりして、夜を楽しみました。メンバーのひとりがこの日の活動についてジャーナルを書きましたので、ぜひ読んでみてください。（近日公開）

Original T-shirt Design

On May 3, Ito sensei and Kodaka sensei organized an event to make original design t-shirts. Students used their computers to design and print out the design. Then, they ironed on the transfer paper to the front or back of the t-shirts. Students could choose one black or white t-shirt to design. Some students who had a clear vision finished before lunch. However, others took longer to come up with a design or had trouble transferring the design they chose. In the end, it was an exciting experience and many students voiced their joy in their finished product.

5月3日（月）は、伊藤先生と小髙先生が企画したオリジナルデザインのTシャツを作るイベントが実施されました。学生はパソコンソフトを使って好きなデザインを作り、Tシャツの表か裏にアイロンで転写しました。参加した学生はそれぞれ白か黒のTシャツをひとつ選ぶことができました。すぐにデザインが決まって早く完成した学生は昼食前に終わりましたが、デザインを考えることに時間をかけたり、凝ったデザイン故にアイロンがけに時間がかかったりした学生もいました。完成したTシャツを見て「おおー！」「きれいー！」と声を上げる学生も多く、刺激的な活動になりました。

Engineering Design II A: Plowing with a Tractor

Returning to school, the agri-business team of the second year's Engineering Design class began working in the fields across the street from ICT. This team's goal is to grow sweet potatoes and make a profitable business model selling them. On May 6, they were joined by members of the local community who lent and taught the students how to drive a tractor. Each student took turns using the tractor to plow the plot of land they will use to plant the sweet potatoes. Unsurprisingly, it was the first time for the students to drive a tractor, and they enjoyed the experience as you can see in the pictures and video below.

授業が再開した5月6日（木）、2年生のエンジニアリングデザインのアグリビジネスチームが畑仕事を開始しました。アグリビジネスチームは地元ブランドのさつまいもを栽培・販売して、ビジネスプランの成功を目指します。この日の活動は白山麓キャンパスの向かいにある畑を耕す作業で、地元の方にトラクターを貸していただき、運転を教えてもらいました。学生たちは順番にトラクターに乗りながら、畑を耕していきました。もちろん、全員トラクターに乗るのは初めてで、写真とビデオの表情からも楽しんでいる様子がわかると思います。

Tie-Dye T-shirts

The last activity I would like to show you is the tie-dye t-shirt event, held after school on May 12 by the Language and Culture Club, for all first and second year students. Tie-dye is a method of folding, twisting, or crumpling fabric, and applying dye to create unique patterns. Ian sensei and Pauline sensei provided various colors of dye, t-shirts, rubber bands, gloves, aprons, and bleach for those who wished to dye a black t-shirt. The students quickly began choosing colors and methods to design their t-shirt. The instruction manual that came with the dye listed several techniques, and some students even experimented with original ways to use the dye; some improvised with their fingers, makeshift brushes, and pipes. You can see their finished products in the pictures below.

最後に紹介するのは5月12日（水）にランゲージ＆カルチャークラブ主催で行われた１，２年生の希望者のためのタイダイTシャツ染め体験です。タイダイ染めは生地を折ったり、ねじったり、くちゃくちゃにしたりしてから固定して染料を加える手法で、独特の模様ができるユニークな染め方です。顧問のイアン先生とポーリン先生は様々な色の染料、Tシャツ、輪ゴム、ビニール手袋、エプロン、黒いTシャツに染めたい学生のための漂白剤を準備しました。付属のマニュアルには様々な手法が解説されており、学生たちは様々な色を組み合わせたり、指や筆やパイプどを使ってオリジナルデザインのTシャツを染め上げました。完成したTシャツは下の写真でご覧ください。

February 9, 2021 Snow Hiking

2021年2月6日（土）、白山麓キャンパスの特別活動としてスノーハイキングを行いました。このイベントはNature and Adventure Clubの尾張コーチの企画運営によるものです。参加者はアファフさん、本田さん、勝方さん、酒井さん、中里さん（全員1年生）、尾張コーチ、潟辺先生、フィリップ先生、ナグワ先生と私です。朝9時に白山麓キャンパスを出発し、２０分ほどのところにある岩間林道入り口に車を駐車しました。そこからカンジキを履いてハイキングを開始しました。途中、尾張コーチによるカンジキ歩行や動物の足跡観察のレクチャーが行われました。見晴らしの良い尾根に出たところで休憩、春の兆しを感じる日光浴をしながら、気持ちの良いひと時を過ごしました。１１時過ぎに目的地であるブナオ山観察舎に到着し、双眼鏡を覗いたりイヌワシなどの剥製を観察しました。今シーズン初めて実施したスノーハイクは、全員が安心して楽しむことができたため、来年度以降Nature and Adventure Clubの定例イベントにしていこうと思います。

On February 6 (Sat) 2021, a group of students and teachers went snow hiking near Hakusanroku Campus. This event was organized by Owari coach of the Nature & Adventure Club. Participants were Afaf, Honda, Katsukata, Sakei, Nakazato (all first-year students), Owari coach, Katabe sensei, Philip sensei, Nagwa sensei, and myself. We departed from ICT at 9 am and parked near the entrance to Iwama Rindo, which is about a 20 minute drive from Hakusanroku Campus. We put on our snow shoes and began hiking. On the way, Owari coach gave advice about how to walk with snow shoes and how to observe various animal tracks. There was a nice ridge with a beautiful view and we stopped to take a group photo and enjoy the warm sun. It was a our first glimmer of spring. We arrived at our destination, the Binao Mountain Observatory, and spent time looking through the binoculars and observing the stuffed animals on display such as the golden eagle. I'm glad students were able to safely enjoy this year's first snow hike. Hopefully it can be an event we do every year.

February 3, 2021 Things I love about living and working in Hakusanroku

We are approaching the end of our third year of ICT’s new curriculum and new campus. There are many things I love about living and working in Hakusanroku. One of them is the history and culture of this area. I always like to find out about the places I live, and I’ve been trying to do that here by getting involved in the community. I hold monthly English Café events at the local Community Centre, and I made an English translation of the exhibitions at the Hakusan Folk Museum in Shiramine.

Another way of learning about the history and culture of Hakusanroku is through our school’s library, which has some old books about the local area. When browsing one day I pulled a fascinating bilingual book off the shelf: ‘Villages of Tedori River Gorge: The final curtain descends on a way of life, its traditions, and ancient culture’ by Morton W. Huber.

It turns out that Morton Huber was a Professor of Environmental Science at KIT in the 1970s and in his spare time used to travel up to Hakusanroku to paint, draw, and take photographs. This book was published in 1976 and in it Dr. Huber writes about the way of life and culture of people in Hakusanroku, including ningyou jyoruri puppet shows from Higashi-futakuchi and Fukaze, hinoki crafts from Fukaze, and silkworm raising and tree growing in Kuwajima. He also writes at length about the Tedori Dam that was due to be built and many of these villages, and their culture, were due to be lost. As a result, the book has an underlying nostalgia and sadness, along with Dr. Huber’s beautiful photographs and sketches, which evoke a rural way of life that has mostly been lost, but glimpses of which can still occasionally be seen.

I searched for Dr. Huber online and found that he is still alive – aged 97! I think it would be very interesting if his old employer, KIT, got in touch to tell him about the new campus they built in a part of the world that he loved so much.

いよいよ国際高専の新しいカリキュラムの3年目が終わります。白山麓に住んで働くといろんないいことがあります。その中の一つはこの地域の歴史と文化です。僕はいつも住んでいる場所のことを詳しく知りたいですから、ここにもコミュニティでいろんな活動をしています。月に１回尾口公民館で「イングリッシュカフェ」というイベントをやったり、白峰にある白山ろく民族資料館に展示してる日本語を英語版を翻訳しました。

そして、国際高専の図書館は白山麓の歴史や文化についての古い本がたくさんあります。ある日、僕はとても面白いバイリンガルな本を１冊見つけました。それは、モートン・ヒューバー先生の「手取峡谷の村落 終幕の下りるとき」という本です。

モートン・ヒューバー先生は1970年代に金沢工業大学で環境工学の教授として働きました。その間に、スケッチや水彩画や白黒の鉛筆画や写真の作品を作るためによく白山麓まで来ました。この1976年に出版された本にモートン・ヒューバー先生は白山麓の歴史と文化を説明します。特に東二口と深瀬の人形浄瑠璃、深瀬のヒノキ笠、桑島の養蚕と山林の木の育ちが注目されています。その時代は手取りダムを作ることが決めたけど、工事はまだ始まってない時でしたから、この本はなくなる文化や生活振りのノスタルジーと残念な気持ちで書いてあると思います。モートン・ヒューバー先生の絵は今の時代にあまり見えない田舎の生活を見せる絵です。でも、現在の白山麓では昔の生活振りが残っているところが時々見えます。

モートン・ヒューバー先生をインターネットで調べたら、まだ97歳で元気にアメリカで暮らしているそうです。モートン・ヒューバー先生が昔働いた大学から「大好きな白山麓に新しいキャンパスが建てました」の連絡があったら面白いと思います。
