It is that time of the year when all students all over Japan are busy taking exams and tests of all kinds. Taking tests is not a fun experience to go through for anyone. Especially when the results of what people do on a test paper for only 50 or 90 minutes can affect their future in a good or bad way. It is a dramatic life turning point. Results of tests should be seen only as one of many signs of skill and knowledge mastery. Passing or getting good scores in tests should not be a goal or the sole way of judging achievements. I believe that tests can be used as a learning experience not a goal to aim for on its own.

Different from most of the schools, the ICT educational program is not test-centered. Besides exams, there are many other ways that we use here to measure learning progress and skills development. I had a lot of fun last week watching students` various presentations either in Biology or Engineering Design courses. In Biology, students researched new or studied topics on their own. Seeing many of them confidently presenting gave me an impression on how much they enjoyed the researching experience. The amount of knowledge they found out and were excited to share cannot be measured on a piece of paper.  The Engineering Design products that students made grew and improved from their original ideas. The students' understanding also grew and improved. The amount of skills gained from those kind of experience is unmeasurable.

In Chemistry, the course that I teach, students were busy mastering that interesting yet challenging knowledge and content through group discussions, experiments, projects, notetaking and problem solving. While deepening their understanding of basic chemistry concepts, students improved learning skills that will stay with them for their life time. They are getting better in lots of learning skills as taking effective notes, or accessing the chemistry textbook, the English language of the book is college level and can be tough even for native English speakers. Besides books, tests and projects, students were also required to build up a chemistry portfolio that shows learning evidence and their reflection and comments on their own learning process. I was so happy to read their comments and reflections, it helped me also to know their interests better. They seem to recognize their strength and weaknesses, which will help them improve even more over next school year. The effort that they made was helping their learning skills ripen as a fruit on a tree that is getting ready for a harvest. Reaching aimed goals is a great pleasure. Seeing results of your efforts relieves all the stress and pressure the person has gone through time.

この時期は日本中の学生が様々な種類のテストを受けています。テストを受けるというのは楽しい体験ではありません。特に、1枚の紙と50分～90分の結果次第では自分の将来に大きな影響を与える場合はなおさらです。人生の大きな分岐点です。テストの結果はあくまでスキルや知識の熟達を測る指数のひとつであるべきです。テストで良い点数を取ることや、合格したりすることが目標になってしまったり、成果を測る唯一の方法になってはなりません。私はテストが学習のための手段であり、テストが目標になるべきではないと思います。

多くの学校と違って、国際高専の教育はテスト中心ではありません。テスト以外にもたくさんの方法を使って学生の進行度やスキルの熟達具合を測ります。先週、学生たちは生物とエンジニアリングデザインで発表を行いました。私も楽しく拝見させてもらいました。生物では、学生たちは授業で学んだ内容や興味のあるテーマについてリサーチと発表を行いました。楽しそうに発表している姿を見ると、リサーチすることを楽しんでいる印象を受けました。彼らが自分たちで発見し、発表という形で共有したいと思った知識はテスト用紙で測れるものではありません。エンジニアリングデザインの成果物は学生のアイデアから生まれ、学生の手によって形になりました。製作を行う中で、学生たちのものづくりに対する知識と経験も同様に成長しました。これらのプロジェクトから得られた技術や経験も計り知れません。

私が教える化学の授業では、学生たちは面白くも難しい知識の修得をグループディスカッション、実験、プロジェクト、ノート取り、課題解決によって行ってきました。化学の基本的なコンセプトの理解を深めつつ、生涯役に立つような学習スキルを体得しました。ノート取りや化学の教科書の使い方が上達しています。使用している英語の教科書は大学レベルのもので、ネイティブスピーカーも苦戦する可能性があるにも関わらず、です。教科書、テスト、プロジェクト以外に、学生は自身の上達の証拠とその感想を記載した化学のポートフォリオの作成を義務付けました。彼らの感想を読むと、同時に興味がある分野もわかるのでとても嬉しくなります。学生たちはそれぞれ自分の長所と短所を把握しているようなので、来年はそれを活かしてさらに成長してくれることでしょう。彼らが学習スキルを実らせるために行った努力は、果実園が収穫期を迎えるかのごとく熟成させたことでしょう。設定した目標を達成することは快感です。努力が実を結ぶことを目にすればそれまでのストレスやプレッシャーを全て消し去ってくれます。

載せた写真には、学生たちがプレゼンテーションを行ったり、「ザ・元素ゲーム・イノベーター選手権」のために製作したカードやボードゲームを試遊したりしている姿が写っています。もっとも高評価だった３つのゲームはラーニング・コモンズに設置され、今後入学する学生も楽しむことができるようになります。

Hello everyone! I am Steven, a mathematics professor at ICT Hakusanroku Campus. I came to ICT and Hakusanroku in October of 2018. So, it has only been a few month since I have been here. Throughout my time here, I am always amazed at the resources ICT Hakusanroku campus offers the students, staff and the professors. I really wish I had these resources when I was a student and an educator at my previous institutions. So, in this journal, I want to introduce some amazing resources ICT Hakusanroku offers.

First, I want to introduce the 3D printers and the LEGO models the students and professors use to help them in their classes. Before coming to ICT Hakusanroku, I had never used a 3D printer nor had I ever seen LEGO models that could be easily used to teach students about basic programming. Throughout the short couple months I have been here, I have learned how to use the 3D printers and I have printed some models that I hope to use next year to aid in my classroom. As for the LEGO models, I have had a blast seeing the students make their robots and program them to do simple tasks and even to sumo! I have even heard they will teach students how to program next year with programmable drones! I am still wondering how I can incorporate a LEGO model into one of my math classes! If you have any suggestions, let me know!

Second, I want to introduce the Maker Studio on the first floor of our campus. This studio has some amazing machinery that the students and professors can use to create anything they can imagine. Some of the machinery (to name a few) include a band-saw, a laser-cutter and some drill presses. I even learned how to solder a basic circuit board thanks to a colleague. Usually, the students use this area for their engineering classes, but I have seen some students just using the machines for their own ideas! I look forward to using this area more in the future!

Finally, I want to introduce the library! I often visit the library on the first floor of the student commons area. Although the library is still lacking some books, it is rapidly increasing the amount of books available to both students and teachers. I visit the library at least once a week to learn a little bit about other topics and also to get some ideas. Further, I like to check many math books in order to get a lot of interesting problems to show the students or challenge the students. I think libraries are crucial to the foundation and the acceleration of knowledge. It is no wonder why the The Royal Library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt, the Library of Pergamum in ancient Turkey and the Academy of Gondishapur in ancient Iran were all centers of knowledge back in antiquity.

はじめまして！白山麓キャンパスで数学を教えているスティーブンです。2018年の10月から国際高専へ来ました。ですので、まだ来てから数か月しか経っていません。着任してから驚かされたのが、国際高専の白山麓キャンパスが学生、職員と先生に提供する充実した設備です。私が学生だった頃や、以前教えていた学校にもこの設備があったら良かったのに、と思わずにはいられません。ということで、このジャーナルでは、国際高専の白山麓キャンパスが提供する素晴らしい施設のいくつかを紹介したいと思います。

まずは授業で学生と先生が大変お世話になっている３DプリンターとLEGOモデルです。白山麓キャンパスに来るまで、私は３Dプリンターを使ったことがありませんでしたし、プログラミングの基礎を分かりやすく学生に教えられるLEGOモデルも見たことがありませんでした。この数か月の間に３Dプリンターの使い方を覚えて、来年の授業で使うためのモデルもいくつかプリントアウトしました。LEGOモデルについては、学生がロボットを製作して、プログラミングで動かして、最後は相撲を取るところまで見て大興奮しました！来年はプログラミングを使ってドローンを動かす授業もあるそうです！LEGOモデルを数学の授業に取り入れる方法を目下模索中なので、提案があればぜひ教えてください！

続いて、1階にあるメーカースタジオを紹介したいと思います。ここには学生と先生が、望むものをなんでも製作できる素晴らしい機械が揃っています。いくつか挙げると、バンドソー、レーザー加工機、ボール盤などです。ここの施設を使って同僚に教わりながらはんだ付けのやり方も覚えることができました。この空間はエンジニアリングデザインの授業で使用しますが、個人のアイデア実現のために使っている学生もいます！今後もこのメーカースタジオを使いこなせるように頑張るつもりです！

最後に紹介したい施設は図書館です！私もよくリビングコモンズの1階にある図書館を訪れます。まだ空いている本棚も目立ちますが、急速に冊数を増やしており、学生や先生に愛用されています。私も週に一度は図書館で新しい情報やアイデアを入手しています。さらに、たくさんある数学の本をチェックして授業で学生に挑戦してもらうための面白い問題を仕入れています。知識の収集と蓄積において図書館は無くてはならない存在だと思います。古の時代、古代エジプトのアレクサンドリア図書館、古代トルコのペルガモン図書館、古代イランのグンデシャープールのアカデミーが知識の中心地だったことも納得できます。

今日はここまでにしましょう。今後も白山麓キャンパスの素晴らしい施設を紹介できることを楽しみにしています。

This is my 1st winter in Hakusan-roku and, oh boy, it is very different.

The snow here is very wet and very abundant. Living on the west coast of America I became accustomed to believe all the snow is nicely tucked away on a mountain, reachable if you want to make the drive. A few years ago I brought in the New Year with my wife’s family in Hiroshima. Although it does snow there, none of the snow seem to stick to the ground. Though she is from Japan, she was also surprised how different the weather is on this side of Japan.

The Hakusan-roku area is great for us with its amount of snow and close proximity to the mountains! Both of us are snowboarders and living here gives us the opportunity to go snowboarding almost every weekend. With at least 3 different mountains in the area, it gives us enough variety to keep things interesting.　Fortunately, as well, the students are also into skiing and/or snowboarding. Hopefully I will have a chance to spend time with them on the slopes since one of the ski resort is close to campus. I hear one of the students is a “Pro”.

今年が人生初の白山麓で過ごす冬となりましたが、全然違うものですね。

ここの雪は大粒で重たい。アメリカの西海岸で暮らしていると、雪は山に降るもので、車を走らせてこちらから見に行くもの、という認識になりがちです。数年前の正月に妻の家族と一緒に広島へ行ったことがありますが、広島では雪が降っても地面に残ることはありません。妻自身も日本出身ですが、日本のこちら側の天候の違いに驚いていました。

白山麓周辺は山も近く、雪がたくさん降るので、ふたりともスノーボードをする私たち夫婦にとっては最適な環境です。ここに住んでいるおかげでほぼ毎週滑っています。しかも近い範囲に3つのスキーリゾートがあるので、飽きることがありません。学生たちもスキーやスノーボードを楽しんでいるようです。スキーリゾートの内のひとつは学校にも近いので、いつか学生たちと一緒に滑りたいです。プロ級に上手い学生もひとりいるという噂ですよ。

Hello everyone! Winter vacation has ended and the end of the school year is already in sight. Time flies by so fast!

Since the beginning of winter, it has snowed quite a lot in Hakusanroku. It’s pretty staggering driving from Kanazawa or Komatsu and see it rain to then coming closer and closer to Hakusanroku and seeing the rain become snow and seeing snow slowly piling up on the ground when there was nothing a few minutes before. This snow reminds me a lot of my home country Canada. With this snow comes all the winter activities that come with it. During the first big snowfall during a weekend in December, students and teachers spontaneously met on the school grounds to make snowmen, snow forts, have snowball fights, sleigh down hills etc. It was a nice break from the stress of studies and homework. No later than last week, students were invited to do these snow-related activities for physical education class as well. They seemed happy to be able to let off some steam in that way.

Of course, snow and mountains also invites skiing and snowboarding. There is a ski resort about ten to fifteen minutes by car from the campus called Ichirino onsen. The view from the top of the mountain is beautiful and I was very surprised when I realized that we can see Hakusanroku campus from the top! Some students have also started working part-time there which is good to develop their sense of responsibility and professionalism. In the end, winter in Hakusanroku offers as much activities as in the summer!

こんにちは、皆さん！冬休みが終わって、もう学年の終わりが見えてきました。あっという間ですね！

冬の訪れと共に、白山麓にたくさんの雪が降りました。金沢や小松から白山へ向かう車内、窓の外の雨がだんだん雪に変わって、さっきまで何もなかった地面に積みあがっていくのは何度見ても不思議です。雪を見ていると故郷のカナダを思い出します。この季節は様々なウィンタースポーツが可能になります。雪が最初に積もった12月の週末は、学生と先生が時間を見つけては外へ出て雪だるまやかまくらを作ったり、雪合戦をしたり、そりで遊んだり…勉強や宿題からの気晴らしに良いですね。先週はこれらの活動を体育の授業でする機会がありました。授業の中でストレス発散が出来て学生たちは楽しそうでした。

もちろん、雪と山と言えばスキーやスノーボードを忘れてはいけません。キャンパスから車で10～15分のところに一里野温泉スキー場というスキーリゾートがあります。頂上からの眺めが美しいし、白山麓キャンパスが見えることに驚きました。数人の学生はそのスキー場でアルバイトを始めました。責任感や社会人としての自覚を養うことになるので、良いことだと思います。結論として、白山麓は夏と同じくらい、冬も様々な活動があるんですね！

Hello, it's Jonathan the camera man. Last week, I found myself dodging left and right through a battlefield of... snowballs! Philip sensei, the PE teacher, organized a snowball fight for PE! Can you imagine having snowball fights for PE? I wish my school had them. Students and teachers gathered on the basket court, which was covered with kneen-deep snow, to blow off some steam from their daily studies. Teachers from the English, math and science courses joined and we almost had an even number of participants from both sides.

Students and teachers were divided into two teams. In the first twenty minutes, both teams were given time to build their fort. We dug and piled snow into a wall to hide behind during the snowball fight. (Although, they were quickly demolished by opposing suicide attackers diving into them.) After building the forts, we played two rounds of snowball fights: first students and teachers mixed, and then students versus teachers.

I can tell you students and teachers are very serious about their snowball fights at ICT. There were people throwing snowballs from behind the forts, dashing left and right, and launching suicide attacks with huge basketball size lumps of snow, which they dumped directly on their victims. Some students found creative ways to sneak around the other team on a flank attack. However, they were usually met with raining snowballs once spotted.There were no complicated rules and everyone had a genuine good time. Soon we were hot and sweaty despite being covered in snow. 

In the final ten minutes, both teams built a snowman before heading off to the onsen for a hot bath. This awesome snowball fight was possible thanks to the snow here at Hakusanroku and the family-like atmosphere of students and teachers living together.

2019年2月4日　体育で雪合戦

こんにちは、カメラマンのジョナサンです。先週、気付けば戦場カメラマンとして戦場に立っていました。飛び交っていたのは銃弾ではなく・・・雪玉です！体育のフィリップ先生が体育の授業として雪合戦を企画したのです！授業で雪合戦をやる学校は珍しいのではないでしょうか？少なくとも私の学校ではやってませんでした。学生と先生が膝の高さまで雪が積もった外のバスケットコートに集まって、思いっきりストレス発散で身体を動かしました。英語、数学、科学系の先生もたくさん参加し、大賑わいでした。

学生と先生は２チームに分けられ、最初の20分間は壁づくりをしました。両チームは雪を塀のように積み上げ、雪合戦の弾除けを作りました。（ただし、これらは相手チームの特攻する選手のタックルによって早々に半壊しました。）壁づくりのあと、雪合戦を２ラウンドしました。最初は学生と先生の混合チームで、２回目は学生vs先生で行いました。

カメラマンとして観察してわかったのは、ICTの学生と先生は雪合戦も全力で取り組むということです。壁の後ろから雪玉を投げる者、左右に避けながら投げる者、巨大な雪玉を抱えて特攻して相手に直接ぶつける者など、様々な戦術がありました。中にはこっそり裏に回って奇襲攻撃をかける学生もいましたが、すぐに見つかって集中砲火を浴びていました。複雑なルールもなく、皆が楽しい時間を過ごしました。すぐに雪だらけになりましたが、動き回って汗だくだったので寒くありませんでした。

雪合戦のあとの残った時間は雪だるまづくりをしたあと、温泉へ向かって身体を温めました。白山麓の気候と、学生と先生が家族のように共に生活をしている国際高専ならではの体育の授業となりました。
