It is that time of the year when all students all over Japan are busy taking exams and tests of all kinds. Taking tests is not a fun experience to go through for anyone. Especially when the results of what people do on a test paper for only 50 or 90 minutes can affect their future in a good or bad way. It is a dramatic life turning point. Results of tests should be seen only as one of many signs of skill and knowledge mastery. Passing or getting good scores in tests should not be a goal or the sole way of judging achievements. I believe that tests can be used as a learning experience not a goal to aim for on its own.

Different from most of the schools, the ICT educational program is not test-centered. Besides exams, there are many other ways that we use here to measure learning progress and skills development. I had a lot of fun last week watching students` various presentations either in Biology or Engineering Design courses. In Biology, students researched new or studied topics on their own. Seeing many of them confidently presenting gave me an impression on how much they enjoyed the researching experience. The amount of knowledge they found out and were excited to share cannot be measured on a piece of paper.  The Engineering Design products that students made grew and improved from their original ideas. The students' understanding also grew and improved. The amount of skills gained from those kind of experience is unmeasurable.

In Chemistry, the course that I teach, students were busy mastering that interesting yet challenging knowledge and content through group discussions, experiments, projects, notetaking and problem solving. While deepening their understanding of basic chemistry concepts, students improved learning skills that will stay with them for their life time. They are getting better in lots of learning skills as taking effective notes, or accessing the chemistry textbook, the English language of the book is college level and can be tough even for native English speakers. Besides books, tests and projects, students were also required to build up a chemistry portfolio that shows learning evidence and their reflection and comments on their own learning process. I was so happy to read their comments and reflections, it helped me also to know their interests better. They seem to recognize their strength and weaknesses, which will help them improve even more over next school year. The effort that they made was helping their learning skills ripen as a fruit on a tree that is getting ready for a harvest. Reaching aimed goals is a great pleasure. Seeing results of your efforts relieves all the stress and pressure the person has gone through time.

この時期は日本中の学生が様々な種類のテストを受けています。テストを受けるというのは楽しい体験ではありません。特に、1枚の紙と50分～90分の結果次第では自分の将来に大きな影響を与える場合はなおさらです。人生の大きな分岐点です。テストの結果はあくまでスキルや知識の熟達を測る指数のひとつであるべきです。テストで良い点数を取ることや、合格したりすることが目標になってしまったり、成果を測る唯一の方法になってはなりません。私はテストが学習のための手段であり、テストが目標になるべきではないと思います。

多くの学校と違って、国際高専の教育はテスト中心ではありません。テスト以外にもたくさんの方法を使って学生の進行度やスキルの熟達具合を測ります。先週、学生たちは生物とエンジニアリングデザインで発表を行いました。私も楽しく拝見させてもらいました。生物では、学生たちは授業で学んだ内容や興味のあるテーマについてリサーチと発表を行いました。楽しそうに発表している姿を見ると、リサーチすることを楽しんでいる印象を受けました。彼らが自分たちで発見し、発表という形で共有したいと思った知識はテスト用紙で測れるものではありません。エンジニアリングデザインの成果物は学生のアイデアから生まれ、学生の手によって形になりました。製作を行う中で、学生たちのものづくりに対する知識と経験も同様に成長しました。これらのプロジェクトから得られた技術や経験も計り知れません。

私が教える化学の授業では、学生たちは面白くも難しい知識の修得をグループディスカッション、実験、プロジェクト、ノート取り、課題解決によって行ってきました。化学の基本的なコンセプトの理解を深めつつ、生涯役に立つような学習スキルを体得しました。ノート取りや化学の教科書の使い方が上達しています。使用している英語の教科書は大学レベルのもので、ネイティブスピーカーも苦戦する可能性があるにも関わらず、です。教科書、テスト、プロジェクト以外に、学生は自身の上達の証拠とその感想を記載した化学のポートフォリオの作成を義務付けました。彼らの感想を読むと、同時に興味がある分野もわかるのでとても嬉しくなります。学生たちはそれぞれ自分の長所と短所を把握しているようなので、来年はそれを活かしてさらに成長してくれることでしょう。彼らが学習スキルを実らせるために行った努力は、果実園が収穫期を迎えるかのごとく熟成させたことでしょう。設定した目標を達成することは快感です。努力が実を結ぶことを目にすればそれまでのストレスやプレッシャーを全て消し去ってくれます。

載せた写真には、学生たちがプレゼンテーションを行ったり、「ザ・元素ゲーム・イノベーター選手権」のために製作したカードやボードゲームを試遊したりしている姿が写っています。もっとも高評価だった３つのゲームはラーニング・コモンズに設置され、今後入学する学生も楽しむことができるようになります。

Hello, it's Kihara, the first-year homeroom teacher. Time flies and the school year is nearing its end. During the upcoming couple of weeks, students must finish their homework, reports, presentations, and final exams. It is sure to be a busy time and I wish them the best of luck.

In today's journal, I would like to talk about a course we have at ICT called "Career Design." In this course, students first set goals they want to achieve during the year. Later, they reevaluate their progress, and make the necessary adjustments to fulfill their goals. We visited the Kaga-Yuzen Kobo Hisatsune and experienced Kaga-Yuzen in this course as well. In today's Career Design class, we looked back on this year and asked the questions "What goals did I actually achieve?", "What goals did I not?", "Why?", and "How did I grow and what skills or knowledge did I acquire?" The aim of this class is for students to understand their current state and implement it into new goals for their second year. I heard some students mumbling to themselves "Did I grow at all this year?" and "I can't remember doing any extracurricular activities."

It seems recalling activities and recognizing ones growth is not easy sometimes. However, there was another phrase I heard constantly. That phrase was "What's wrong with this English?" Apparently, they were reading the goals they wrote at the beginning of the school year in April and the reflecting sheet they wrote in October. The students wrote both in English and seemingly noticed flaws in them. These were followed by phrases such as "Why isn't there a period here?", "I don't understand this sentence.", and "I can't believe how bad this English is." Watching my homeroom students mutter complaints to their own sentences, I thought to myself "We did a lot of different things this year, but maybe English is where we progressed the most after all."

Students' remaining time living together here at Hakusanroku campus is little over a year. Until that time, study well, play well and make the best memories you possibly can.

こんにちは。１年生担任の木原です。早いもので、今年度の授業も残りわずかとなりました。学生はこれからの１～２週間の間で、宿題やレポートの提出、成果発表、そして期末試験と忙しい日が続きます。体調に十分注意して、これらの課題を乗り越えていってください。

さて、今回はキャリアデザインという授業を紹介します。この授業では学生はこれまで、１年生の間に達成したい目標を立て、その進捗状況を振り返り、目標を達成するために必要な修正をしてきました。また加賀友禅の工房久恒を見学して、実際に加賀友禅を体験するという課題にも取り組みました。今回のキャリアデザインの授業では１年間のまとめとして、「今年達成できたことは何か？できなかったことは何か？その具体的な理由は？自分が成長したと思うスキルや知識は何か？」などの質問に回答し、現在の自分を理解した上で、次の２年生の目標に反映させるという課題を行いました。授業中には“何か身に付いたものあったかな？課外活動なにもしてないかも？”などの声がちらほらと聞こえてきました。

これまでに取り組んできたいろいろな活動を思い出したり、自分で自分の成長を自覚したりすることは少し難しいようです。そんな中、学生が口々につぶやいた言葉があります。それが、“この英文は何かおかしい”です。４月当初に目標を立てたときや、１０月に進捗状況を振り返った際に書いた英文に、どうも違和感を抱いたようです。“なんでここにピリオドが入ってないの？この文章の意味が分からん。昔書いた英文を読むのは恥ずかしい。”などなど、過去の自分が書いた英文にダメ出しが続出。担任としては「この１年間いろいろなことがあったけど、やっぱり一番力がついたのは英語力かな」としみじみと感じた瞬間でした。

ここ白山麗キャンパスで共同生活を過ごすのもあと１年程です。それまでの間に、しっかりと学んで、しっかりと遊んで、そして最高の思い出を作ってください。

This is my 1st winter in Hakusan-roku and, oh boy, it is very different.

The snow here is very wet and very abundant. Living on the west coast of America I became accustomed to believe all the snow is nicely tucked away on a mountain, reachable if you want to make the drive. A few years ago I brought in the New Year with my wife’s family in Hiroshima. Although it does snow there, none of the snow seem to stick to the ground. Though she is from Japan, she was also surprised how different the weather is on this side of Japan.

The Hakusan-roku area is great for us with its amount of snow and close proximity to the mountains! Both of us are snowboarders and living here gives us the opportunity to go snowboarding almost every weekend. With at least 3 different mountains in the area, it gives us enough variety to keep things interesting.　Fortunately, as well, the students are also into skiing and/or snowboarding. Hopefully I will have a chance to spend time with them on the slopes since one of the ski resort is close to campus. I hear one of the students is a “Pro”.

今年が人生初の白山麓で過ごす冬となりましたが、全然違うものですね。

ここの雪は大粒で重たい。アメリカの西海岸で暮らしていると、雪は山に降るもので、車を走らせてこちらから見に行くもの、という認識になりがちです。数年前の正月に妻の家族と一緒に広島へ行ったことがありますが、広島では雪が降っても地面に残ることはありません。妻自身も日本出身ですが、日本のこちら側の天候の違いに驚いていました。

白山麓周辺は山も近く、雪がたくさん降るので、ふたりともスノーボードをする私たち夫婦にとっては最適な環境です。ここに住んでいるおかげでほぼ毎週滑っています。しかも近い範囲に3つのスキーリゾートがあるので、飽きることがありません。学生たちもスキーやスノーボードを楽しんでいるようです。スキーリゾートの内のひとつは学校にも近いので、いつか学生たちと一緒に滑りたいです。プロ級に上手い学生もひとりいるという噂ですよ。

Hello everyone! Winter vacation has ended and the end of the school year is already in sight. Time flies by so fast!

Since the beginning of winter, it has snowed quite a lot in Hakusanroku. It’s pretty staggering driving from Kanazawa or Komatsu and see it rain to then coming closer and closer to Hakusanroku and seeing the rain become snow and seeing snow slowly piling up on the ground when there was nothing a few minutes before. This snow reminds me a lot of my home country Canada. With this snow comes all the winter activities that come with it. During the first big snowfall during a weekend in December, students and teachers spontaneously met on the school grounds to make snowmen, snow forts, have snowball fights, sleigh down hills etc. It was a nice break from the stress of studies and homework. No later than last week, students were invited to do these snow-related activities for physical education class as well. They seemed happy to be able to let off some steam in that way.

Of course, snow and mountains also invites skiing and snowboarding. There is a ski resort about ten to fifteen minutes by car from the campus called Ichirino onsen. The view from the top of the mountain is beautiful and I was very surprised when I realized that we can see Hakusanroku campus from the top! Some students have also started working part-time there which is good to develop their sense of responsibility and professionalism. In the end, winter in Hakusanroku offers as much activities as in the summer!

こんにちは、皆さん！冬休みが終わって、もう学年の終わりが見えてきました。あっという間ですね！

冬の訪れと共に、白山麓にたくさんの雪が降りました。金沢や小松から白山へ向かう車内、窓の外の雨がだんだん雪に変わって、さっきまで何もなかった地面に積みあがっていくのは何度見ても不思議です。雪を見ていると故郷のカナダを思い出します。この季節は様々なウィンタースポーツが可能になります。雪が最初に積もった12月の週末は、学生と先生が時間を見つけては外へ出て雪だるまやかまくらを作ったり、雪合戦をしたり、そりで遊んだり…勉強や宿題からの気晴らしに良いですね。先週はこれらの活動を体育の授業でする機会がありました。授業の中でストレス発散が出来て学生たちは楽しそうでした。

もちろん、雪と山と言えばスキーやスノーボードを忘れてはいけません。キャンパスから車で10～15分のところに一里野温泉スキー場というスキーリゾートがあります。頂上からの眺めが美しいし、白山麓キャンパスが見えることに驚きました。数人の学生はそのスキー場でアルバイトを始めました。責任感や社会人としての自覚を養うことになるので、良いことだと思います。結論として、白山麓は夏と同じくらい、冬も様々な活動があるんですね！

Looking back over the months of living at Hakusan-roku, I recognize that things are always changing. I am in awe of how many creatures we live amongst. Kobi has been in close contact with wasps, bees, ants, centipedes, geckos, cow-flies, dragonflies, crows, monkeys, and stink bugs! While I busy myself setting the creature free from the cottage, Kobi is not disturbed. Since it is winter, he does not see monkeys often

-- just now and then at night, he smells them outside and whines to go out and run them off.

Like everything else, Kobi’s life is eventful and he too is changing. He is a tropical dog. He was born on Guam where is always hot and winter is a new thing for him. He has taken to it like a champion. He loves running in the snow, but shivers from the cold easily. His fur comes in thick and he sheds more than he’s ever done before. When he runs in the snow nothing takes the balls of snow off except a hot bath in the tub.

Yes, he like the O-furo!

Kobi enjoys the company of people, especially children and has the opportunity to do home-stays. Having homestays at Hayato-sensei’s home on many occasions allowed me to discover different sides of Kobi. For one, he’s learned to climb stairs at Hayato’s house, something he’d never done at my house. In Guam, our home had no stairs. I learned that he climbs on the table --at Hayato’s. He never does at my house! He is a learner.

ICT is a language environment where language is learned. Not only the students are learning another language, but Kobi is too. It seems that he is adding Japanese to his fluency in “dog language” and English language. My, my, he is becoming multilingual; if there is such a thing for a dog.  At Hayato’s house he gets to play with his kids, family, and friends. And Hayato tells me that Kobi follows commands in Japanese language. Well, I am shocked. Now that I know that he has an aptitude for language learning, I have to quit telling old ladies in the Sena area who talk to him that he understands English and Japanese. At least I can let him learn, right?

白山麓で暮らしたこの数か月を振り返ると、周辺がいつも変化していることに気付かされます。近隣で暮らしている動物の多さにも驚かされます。コビが発見しただけでもスズメバチ、ミツバチ、アリ、ムカデ、ヤモリ、アブ、トンボ、カラス、猿、そして、カメムシ。私はコテージに侵入した生き物を外に逃がすのに忙しいのに、コビは冬で猿をあまり見かけなくなったので落ち着いています。時々夜中に匂いを嗅いで外へ出してもらおうと鼻を鳴らすくらいです。

何においてもそうですが、コビの人生も毎日が盛りだくさんで、彼自身も変化しています。コビは熱帯地方出身の犬です。常夏のグアムで生まれ、寒いところは人生で初めてです。しかし、寒さにへこたれていません。雪の中を走り回るのは大好きだけど、すぐに寒さで震え出します。以前よりも毛が分厚くなり、生え代わりも激しいです。雪の中を駆け回って体中についた雪の塊を取るには暖かいバスタイムがベストです。

そう、コビはお風呂が大好きなのです！

コビは人間が大好きです。特に子供が好きで、よくホームステイをしています。ハヤト先生の家でホームステイを重ねるにつれ、コビの新たな一面を発見しています。まず、ハヤト先生の家で階段の登り方を覚えたようです。グアムの家には階段がなかったので階段は登ったことがありませんでした。もうひとつ、ハヤト先生の家ではテーブルの上に登るそうです。私の家ではそんなことしたことがありません！学習しているんですね。

国際高専は新たな言語を覚える環境が整っています。学生だけではなく、コビも新たな言語を覚えています。どうやら犬語と英語に加え、日本語も覚えつつあるようです。まあ、まあ、マルチリンガルになっているようです。（犬としては、ですが）ハヤト先生の家では子供たちや、家族や友人に遊んでもらえるようです。ハヤト先生によれば日本語の命令にも従うそうです。本当、驚きです。まさか言語習得の才能があったとは。「英語と日本語が話せるんだね」と茶化してくる瀬女のおばあちゃんたちに反論できなくなってしまいました。まあ、新しいことを覚えるのは悪いことじゃないですよね？
