Hello everyone. My name is Hitoshi Kihara and I am in charge of the first grader’s math classes. The Hakusanroku Campus of International College of Technology is a brand new campus. Here, students, teachers, staff and everyone involved in the school is working together to come up with creative and fun classes, activities and events. Many ideas are born and carried out every day. It’s interesting and exciting. Today, I will introduce two events that took place lately.

The first is a birthday party. The students have been living together in the dormitory for more than a month and have become quite close. It feels like they are longtime friends or brothers and sisters. This month we had our first surprise birthday party. We didn’t know if we could pull off a surprise party while using the same living space. However, this is where creativity and team play come in. The party was a heartwarming success.

The second is a barbeque party. This was a strong request from the students. However, the Hakusanroku campus is far from the city and there were several problems to solve. Where would we buy the food? How about the equipment? Where should the barbeque take place? How do we get everyone there? We decided that faculty members should backup the students since they have little knowledge of the local area and were struggling to plan the event all by themselves. The weather was a chilly for May on the day of the barbeque but the heat of the grill blew it away. I give my thanks to all faculty members who helped prepare it.

There are countless unique events, classes and activities at Hakusanroku campus that I wish to show you. Maybe I can talk more about them next time. Please look forward to it.

こんにちは。1年生担任の木原均です。授業は数学（基礎数学と解析基礎）を担当しています。国際高専の白山麗キャンパスは本年度からスタートした新しい学校です。ここでは学生・教員・職員そしてこの学校にかかわる全ての人たちが日々創意工夫を駆使して、いろいろな授業や活動、イベントなどを作り上げています。毎日たくさんのアイディアが飛び交い、そして実現され、とてもワクワクしています。楽しいですよ。今回は皆さんに最近あったイベントを2つ紹介します。
１つ目は、誕生会です。寮での共同生活もすでに1か月を超え、学生のみんなはすっかり仲良くなりました。もうすでに昔からの友達や兄弟みたいに打ち解けています。そんな中、誕生日の友達のために初めてのサプライズバースデーパーティーが企画されました。寮での共同生活なのに、当日まで本人に気が付かれることなく、準備ができるのか？みんなのアイディアやチームプレーの見せどころです。結果、パーティーは無事に大成功。とても心温まったひとときとなりました。

2つ目は、バーベキューです。学生からの希望が特に強かった企画の１つです。しかし、白山麓キャンパスはかなり人里離れた場所に位置しているため、バーベキュー実現のためには問題が山積みでした。食材は？道具は？場所は？移動手段は？土地勘の少ない学生だけで企画運営するのは難しいという状況だったため、事務局職員の皆さんに全面的にバックアップしていただけることになりました。当日は5月中旬にも関わらずとても風が冷たい日でしたが、バーベキューの熱気がすべて吹き飛ばしてくれました。事務局の皆さん、ありがとうございました。

白山麗キャンパスでは今回紹介したようなイベントだけではなく、授業や活動などでも皆さんに知ってもらいたいユニークなものがたくさんあります。次回はそのような魅力的な授業や活動も紹介したいと思っています。お楽しみに。それでは。

I am Dr. Pauline Baird. It is never a dull day for me living and working at the Hakusan Roku Campus because I keep myself busy. Besides teaching English, I explore the neighborhood with my dog Kobi. 

Kobi is the only official non-human residents at the Hakusan Roku. He is a 10-year old mixed breed dog (Maltese-Pomeranian) who loves walking and running every day. Each morning, we get our exercise, fresh air and vitamin D when we go walking. For half an hour, before 7:00 am, we run and walk on the sidewalks all the way to the post office and back. 

We usually pass early-morning cyclists, walkers, runners, and motorists who sometimes wave to us.  

In the evenings, you can find us either spending time at the dog-park across from the campus, near Michi no Eki. We visit with transient dogs and their families as they take a break from their long drive to and from Hakusan area. Kobi gets to play with dogs of all breeds and is not afraid to make friends. I get to make new human friends, too. 

Now that it is spring, many people in the neighborhood are beginning to plant their gardens and rice-fields. And Kobi is the delight of old ladies who come up to pet him and talk with him. I think he is beginning to understand Japanese—smart dog!

Because of Kobi, I have a new hobby - Monkey Tracking. This is how it goes. I lead Kobi out of the cottage on his leash. At the foot of the stairs, he leads the way in a sprint. He stops and smells something left there by the monkeys. He sniffs all along the pathway leading away from the cottages. Next, he leads the way around the periphery of the parking lot, up the bank, to the foot of a tall tree. 

Yesterday, Kobi insisted on going around the cottage and he led the way. We tracked the monkeys to the embankment behind the cottages. He refused to leave all the while looking into the bushes. Suddenly, he sprang towards the bushes and barked. Several monkey raced into the trees. By walking with Kobi the Monkey Tracker, I am appreciating nature, both flora and fauna in Hakusan. When he barks at 3 am, I wonder what more lies in the bushes and forests and roams our campus at night. Kobi might help me find out!

私の名前はポーリン・ベアードです。いつも忙しく動き回っているので、白山麓キャンパスでの生活に退屈な日はありません。英語を教えている時以外は、よく飼い犬のコビと近所の散策をしています。

コビは白山麓キャンパス唯一の人間ではない住人です。マルチーズとポメラニアンのミックスで、年齢は１０歳です。散歩が大好きで、毎日走り回っています。毎朝一緒に散歩をして、運動、きれいな空気、ビタミンDを確保しています。朝７時前、３０分ほど歩道を走ったり歩いたりして、郵便局までの道のりを往復します。早朝にはサイクリング、ウォーキング、ランニング、ツーリングを楽しんでいる方とすれ違います。時々手を振ってくれる方もいます。

夕方は、道路を挟んで向かいの道の駅近くのドッグランで時間を過ごしています。白山麓まで長いドライブをして休憩をしている家族とその犬によく会います。おかげでコビは様々な犬と友達になれて、人見知りをしなくなりました。私も新しい人間の友達ができます。

季節も春になり、近隣の住民が畑仕事や田植えを始めました。コビを触ったり話しかけたりするおばあちゃんがたくさんいるので、良い癒しとなっているようです。コビも少し日本語を覚えたような気がします。本当に賢い子ですね。

コビのおかげで、新しい趣味ができました。「モンキートラッキング」です。説明しましょう。革ひもをつないでコビとコテージを出ます。階段を下りるとすぐ、コビが走り出して、猿たちが残した何かを見つけて匂いを嗅ぎます。コテージ近くの小道を進んでいき、駐車場周辺から川べり、最後に高い木の根元に到着します。

先日、コビがコテージの裏へ回りたがったので、ついていきました。コテージ裏の川べりまで追跡しましたが、コビが一向にその場を離れようとせず、しきりに茂みの中を探っていました。突然、彼が茂みに向かって吠えながら飛び掛かり、何匹かの猿が木の上へ逃げていきました。「モンキートラッカー」のコビと一緒に散歩していると植物などの自然だけではなく、野生の動物に会うこともできるのです。朝の３時に彼が吠えると、いったい何が近くの茂みの中に隠れているのだろうと考えます。コビと一緒にいればいつか解明できるかもしれませんね！

ポーリン・ベアード

With the lofty green mountains in the background, I walk to the office with a cup of coffee in my hand, breathing in the fresh cool air. This is a refreshing new experience for me, coming from a country filled with concrete buildings and skyscrapers. I am Kah Keng (K.K.) and I am from the city state of Singapore. I am one of the teachers who has the opportunity to live and work at the new Hakusanroku campus.

To be able to work and live with nature itself invigorates me, not only at work but also in my personal time with my family. We have enjoyed watching the ever changing colors of the mountains as they have turned from white in Winter to the fresh green of Spring. We look forward to the rest of the year as the canvas of nature changes and brings us new sights of all its wonders.

I hope that the students will benefit from studying and living at this unique campus, and allow nature to renew our senses, rejuvenate our minds and revitalize our quest for knowledge. Afterall, it is said that nature unlocks the imagination and inspires creativity. Perhaps, being away from the hustle and bustle of city life will allow us to focus on the development of the self, the learning and practice of new skills and knowledge, and the enjoyment of community life.

今朝も、雄大な緑の山々を眺めながら、コーヒー片手にオフィスへと向かいました。澄んだ冷たい空気は、コンクリートや高層ビルが立ち並ぶ国から来た私にとっては新鮮です。私の名前はカー・ケン（K.K.）、出身はシンガポール、白山麓キャンパスに住んでいる新任教員のひとりです。

自然の中で生活していると活力が湧いてきます。仕事だけではなく、家族と過ごす私生活もです。移ろいゆく山の色が、冬の白から春の新緑へ変わるのを毎日観察しています。これから自然がこのキャンバスにどんな色を描いてくれるのか楽しみです。 学生たちがこのユニークな環境で学生生活を送ることによって、得るものが多いことを願っています。自然の中で感覚を研ぎ澄ませ、脳を活性化し、より一層知識の探求に臨んで欲しいと思います。昔から自然の中にいると想像力と創造力が解放されると言われています。車の行きかう町中よりも自己開発、新しい知識と技術の修得、そして仲間との交流に集中できるのかもしれません。

タン・カー・ケン

Hi there. This is Maesa and I’m one of the new teachers at the Hakusanroku campus. This semester I help teach the Computer Skills and Design Thinking classes. This past Monday was our first day of classes after Golden Week and as well as our Computer Skills class together. I started to stay after class to help the students with any of the computer applications we use. I’m glad when the students stay since it gives me a chance to interact with them on an individual basis. K.K. sensei and I are assigned to lead the 3D modeling class. Earlier in the school year we asked the students what did they want to create. One of the students suggested creating an iPhone case. Although I enjoyed my Golden Week, I’m happy to be back to work on incorporating the students’ suggestions into the course. I look forward to sharing what I have in store for them.

はじめまして、白山麓キャンパスの新任教員のひとり、メイサと申します。今学期はコンピュータースキルズとデザインシンキングの授業を担当しています。今週の月曜日が連休明け最初の授業日となり、久しぶりのコンピュータースキルズでした。今週から授業後に残って授業で使ったアプリの補習をはじめました。学生が授業後に残ってくれると、もっと個人的に接することができるので嬉しいです。３Dモデリングの授業は私とKK（タン・カー・ケン）先生で教えています。学期のはじめに「何を作りたいか」を学生たちに質問したところ、ひとりがスマホケースを提案してくれました。ゴールデンウィークは楽しかったですが、学生たちの案をカタチにする仕事に戻れてよかったです。今後予定している内容を早く学生たちに伝えたいです。

Today was an exciting day because we had a TV crew in the classroom! Ishikawa Television, the local TV station was very interested in our school and asked if they could film a news report. This picture was taken during Physics class. They also joined us in Computer Skills and did an interview with Momi Kinoshita about what it’s like to live at ICT away from home. I was very surprised how calm the students were even though they were on camera. Maybe everything is so new that they have just gotten used to unordinary things. The news report will air on April 11th at 6:14 pm on Ishikawa TV. I hope to post a video of the news clip for those who missed it in the next entry. See you next time.

本日はテレビクルーが教室に来て、非常にエキサイティングな日でした！石川テレビが国際高専の取材を申し込んだのです。物理とコンピュータースキルズの授業にカメラが入りました。木下もみ君に家から離れて暮らすことについての取材だったのですが、皆さんカメラマンが教室にいるので、とても落ち着いていたので驚きました。新しいことばかりなので、簡単には驚かなくなったのかもしれませんね。この番組は４月１１日の１８：１４からのニュースで放送されますが、この記事が上がる頃には終わってるかもしれません。見れなかった人のためにそのビデオをお見せできれば良いと思っています。次回お会いしましょう。
