Nice to see you all again, Jomkit here. It’s been a while since my last journal entry, and by now all the snow and ice has been replaced with rain and thunder. But I suppose the thunder was here in the winter too, strange thing. Where I come from in the US, thunder during a snow storm is considered a rarity, so when I heard it thunder and saw the sky light up in the middle of a blizzard last winter I was shocked to put it simply. What I would consider the end of the world however, apparently native Ishikawa residents consider everyday business.
In any case, inspired by the seasonal transition from white to green, I started growing a little indoor garden from where I live on campus. I think it’s very fascinating watching the life cycle of a plant from seed to full maturity. As soon as I was able to start driving myself around, I began making trips to the local Komeri down the road as well as the DCM Kahma home center in town to pick up seeds and other tools for gardening. I chose plants with no particular theme other than how nice they looked and maybe their ability to repel insects. For instance, I planted marigolds, peppermint, and various other herbs because I read about their use in common insect repellants.
In an unintentional way, I also ended up conducting an informal experiment on how being placed indoors vs. outdoors affects potted plants. The marigolds and herbs I planted on the balcony grew more quickly and flowered much sooner than the ones I grew indoors. I can’t wait to see more of my garden bloom, partly because the plants that have already flowered are gorgeous but also because I have forgotten which seeds I planted in which pots.

お久しぶりです、ジョムキットです。前回のジャーナルからずいぶん時間が経ちましたが、あの時の雪と氷は雨と雷に取って代わられました。取って代わられたと言いましたが、よく考えたら冬も雷が鳴っていましたね、とても不思議です。アメリカの私の故郷では雪に雷が伴うのは珍しいので、去年の冬の吹雪の最中に雷鳴が聞こえて空が明るくなった時はとても驚きました。私にとってはこの世の終わりに見るような光景も、石川県の方たちにとっては「普通のこと」のようです。
いずれにしても、季節が白銀から新緑に変わったことにつられた私は、キャンパス内の住んでいるところに屋内庭園をはじめてみることにしました。種から成長する過程を観察するのは非常に興味深いです。日本で運転ができるようになってからは地元のコメリと町にあるDCMカーマのホームセンターに通って種やガーデニング用具を購入しています。植物を選ぶ基準はあまりなく、見た目の良さや虫に対する強さなどで選んでいます。
結果として、私は意図せず鉢に植えられた草花が屋内と屋外でどのように成長するかを比較実験することになりました。屋外バルコニーで育てたマリーゴールドとハーブたちは屋内のものより早く成長し、花を咲かせました。ほかの鉢も早く芽を出してほしいです。もちろん、先に咲いた花が美しいからという理由もありますが、実はどの鉢にどの植物を植えたのか、わからなくなってしまったのです。

Hello everyone!
It has already been more than a year since the pandemic has started. This has created many challenges for everyone on our planet and for our school, including teachers and students alike. However, we are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines coming. Here is to hoping that everyone can go back to their normal lives by the end of this year and we can put this endeavor behind us.
On a personal note, this will be my last Hakusanroku journal as I will be leaving Japan in September to go back to my home country of Canada. I will have been living in Japan for nine years in August and it is time for me to start a new chapter in my life. I cannot even begin to enumerate and describe all of the incredible experiences I have had in Japan, first in Shimane prefecture, then in Ishikawa prefecture, with some travelling in between. They will stay with me for my whole life, as I will often look back fondly on them. Of course, I plan to return to Japan from time to time at least to visit and see the wonderful people I have met here. I would like to thank the faculty, staff and students of International College of Technology who all have made my time here at this school wonderful. When I first arrived at this school, I had many questions about many things, but everybody has always been kind and helped me when I needed it. I am very grateful for that.
Starting next term, the biology classes will be given by a new member of our staff, Dorsaf Gatri. She arrived here in June and I’m convinced that the students will be in very good hands!
Thank you to everyone again and thank you for reading! May our paths cross sometime, somewhere in the future.

新型コロナウィルスのパンデミックが始まって１年以上が経ちました。これによって、本校の先生と学生をはじめ、地球上にいる全人類が様々な試練に直面しました。しかし、ワクチンの配布によって、ようやく長いトンネルの出口が見えてきました。全員が元の普通の生活に戻れること、そしてこの試練を過去のものにできるように祈っています。
自分のことについて述べると、９月に故郷のカナダへ帰るため、これが私の最後の白山麓ジャーナルになります。８月には日本で暮らし始めて９年になります。自分の人生の新たな一章を開くときが来ました。日本で経験した素晴らしい思い出は数え切れません。最初は島根県、次に石川県、その間にいくらか旅もしました。これらの懐かしい思い出は一生忘れることができません。私の一部です。もちろん、ここで出会った素敵な方たちに会うために時々日本を訪れようと思っています。ここでの生活を素晴らしいものにしてくれた国際高等専門学校の教員、スタッフ、学生全員に感謝を伝えたいです。右も左もわからない時から、いつも助けてくれました。本当にありがとうございます。
来学期から、生物の授業は新しく着任したガトリ・ドーサフ先生が担当します。６月から一緒に教えていますが、安心して学生たちを任せられると確信しています。
ここまで読んでくれてありがとう、色々なことをありがとう！将来、また会えることを期待しています。

Hello everyone! Summer is almost in full swing here at the Hakusanroku Campus. Something else that is in full swing around here, is the S1 students’ “worst design” project for Engineering Design 1A. For this project, the students are tasked with taking something that they use every day, that causes them some sort of problem or inconvenience, and design a way to improve its function. This year, there are all sorts of projects, there are different fixtures to be attached in the student’s bedrooms and even redesigning school supplies used in other classes. It is so interesting to see what the students view as the worst thing they use every day, because it gives insight into their personalities and life styles.
This past week, the students started working on their rough prototypes. The goal of these prototypes, is to help the students visualize their product in order to figure out areas that still could use some improvement. The students built these models out of common materials like paper, cardboard, or foam. It was wonderful to see the students work so hard and to see their ideas begin to take shape. Jonathan, the camera man, was able to get some really nice pictures of the students building their rough prototypes. These protypes do not need to work perfectly, they are more of a way to determine if the size and shape truly works for what the student is intending it to be used for. Once they have completed this prototype they will them begin to build the first iteration of their final product using different materials they have requested. I am excited to see how their first iterations will turn out, and based on the rough prototypes they just made, I think there will be some unique and interesting final products.

みなさん、こんにちは！白山麓キャンパスはまもなく暑い夏を迎えようとしています。さらにもうひとつ、アツいものと言えば、S1学生のエンジニアリングデザイン1Aの「最悪のデザイン」プロジェクトです。学生に課されたお題は、毎日使うもので問題や不便を引き起こしているものを見つけて、機能を改良するデザインを施すことです。学生たちが出したアイデアは様々です。自室に取り付けるものもあれば、ほかの授業で使う道具をリデザインするものもあります。学生が毎日使うもので、何を最悪と思うのかを観察することで、その学生の性格や生活習慣が見えてくるのでとても面白いです。
先週、学生たちはラフ・プロトタイプ作りを開始しました。ラフ・プロトタイプは一度視覚化することで、さらなる改善点を探すことが目的です。材料は紙、段ボール、発泡スチロールなどの簡易的なものです。学生たちが努力をしてアイデアを形にしていく様は見ていて嬉しくなりました。カメラマンのジョナサンが、ラフ・プロトタイプ制作中の写真を撮ってくれました。このプロトタイプは完璧に機能する必要はなく、どちらかというと大きさや形が学生の想定している通りかを確認するためのものです。これが完了したら、次は実際の材料を使って本製品第一号に取り掛かります。ラフ・プロトタイプを見ているだけに、どんなものが完成するのかがとても楽しみです。非常にユニークで面白いものが期待できますよ。

授業や地域活動の交流で知り合う地元の方は、自然や歴史にまつわる話がとても豊富で興味深いものがあり勉強になります。新学期が始まり学生達は、このような四季折々の豊かな自然と、そこに住む人の生活に触れ、他では感じる事のできない貴重な学校生活を始動しました。

Last year, we experienced the largest amount of snow so far at Hakusanroku Campus. That's why when the cherry blossoms began to bloom and the swallows showed up just in time for the entrance ceremony in April, it gave such a strong impression that spring had finally arrived. The snow from the roof that piled up all the way up to the second floor windows was still there at the end of April; a reminder of the heavy snow. However, even that melded with the rain before the Golden Week holidays in May.
It is currently mid-May as I write this and we are experiencing constant rain that makes me wonder if rainy season already started. The misty gorge of Tedori River, which runs more than ten kilometers alongside my commuting route, reminds me of a dragon descending from the Hakusan Mountains.
I am always fascinated by the stories about nature and history local people tell us during class or interactions with the community. Students are living in a place with four beautiful seasons and valuable experiences, here in Hakusanroku.

５月５～１２日、コンピュータスキルズⅡA（２年生前期）の授業でミニ・デザインコンテストが実施されました。学生達は３人ずつのチームに分かれて提示された課題に取り組みます。今回は、３Dモデリングソフト「Fusion360」を用いて橋の設計をし、そのデータを用いて3Dプリンタで印刷するという課題でした。その後、重りを使って橋の強度テストを行い性能を競います。学生達はまだ橋の設計に必要な物理知識を学んでいませんが、普段の地元のフィールドワークで目撃した橋からインスピレーションを得て各自デザインに工夫を凝らしました。この課題を通して、学生たちはグループにおけるアイデア出しから設計、試作、検証までの一連の流れを体験する事が出来ます。
多くのチームがアーチ形の橋を作成しました。あるチームは底を厚くして強度を高め、別のチームは補強のための棒のような構造を追加しました。今回は使用可能なプラスチック材料の量が制限されているため、与えられた条件の下で機能の取捨選択に苦労したようです。また、Fushion360で作成されたデータがうまく3Dプリンタで印刷できないケースもあり、学生達は試作を繰り返しました。実際の重量テストでは石をバケツに載せて橋に吊るし、規定の重量に耐えたチームにボーナス点が与えられました。学生達は重さと共にたわんでいく様子や橋が壊れる瞬間に一喜一憂しながら、他のチームの色々なアイデアに関心を寄せていました。
今回はシンプルなアーチ形の橋が一番強いという結果でした。ただ強いだけではなく、人々を楽しませる橋（例：山中温泉のあやとり橋）や安全性を考慮した橋（例：手すりを付ける）など、興味深いテーマに発展しそうです。

Through May 5 ~ 12, a mini-design contest was held in Computer Skills IIA (second year's first semester class). Students were divided into groups of three that worked together to solve a task as a team. This time, the task was to design a bridge using the 3D modeling software "Fusion360". Students 3D-printed their design and competed how strong it was with bags of stones. The second year students have not learned the necessary physics to design a bridge yet. However, they used inspiration from bridges they saw in past fieldworks and ingenuity. By completing this task, students can experience the process of brainstorming, designing, prototyping, and evaluating in a group.
Most teams chose the shape of an arch for their bridge. Some teams strengthened it by adding width to the base and other teams added poll-like structures. In this task, the students were given a limit as to how much plastic they could use, so it was a difficult decision what to apply and what to give up. Also, sometimes the 3D printer could not print the Fusion360 data correctly, and students had to go through trial and error. To actually test its strength, we hung a bucket of rocks from the bridge. Each team that withstood a certain amount received bonus points. Students let out shouts of joy and dismay as the bridges bent and finally broke. There was also many oohs and ahhs as they saw other teams' ideas.
In conclusion, the simplest arch bridge was the strongest. Maybe we can expand on this theme and design bridges that are not only strong but entertaining (ex. Ayatori Bridge in Yamanaka Onsen) or safer (ex. add railings, etc.)

In conclusion, the simplest arch bridge was the strongest. Maybe we can expand on this theme and design bridges that are not only strong but entertaining (ex. Ayatori Bridge in Yamanaka Onsen) or safer (ex. add railings, etc.)
