January 25, 2022 Walks in the Woods

　Hello everyone! The snow is piling up at the Hakusanroku Campus. Even though it is cold outside, I’ve still been trying to get outside and enjoy the winter season. One thing I really enjoy about being outside is finding animals. So far, I’ve seen black bears, serow, deer, monkeys, wild boar, badgers, rabbits, snakes, owls, and pheasants. Of course, some of these animals are sleeping during the winter months, so they are difficult to find. However, I’m usually able to find evidence of some animals when I get outside in the mountains.
　During the New Year’s holiday, I went on several walks along the forest roads in the hills of Kanazawa and Hakusan. While I wasn’t able to take photos of the animals I saw, I did get to look closely at some of their tracks in the mud and snow. Do you know who made these footprints?
　Closer to Hakusanroku Campus, the Bunao Mountain Observation Building is a great place to learn about the animals native to this part of Japan. I like to stop there when I’m nearby. If you have a chance, I highly recommend it! https://www.pref.ishikawa.lg.jp/hakusan/bunao/

　みなさんこんにちは！白山麓キャンパスには雪が沢山積もっています。外は寒いですが、私は外に出て、冬の季節を楽しむようにしています。外での楽しみの一つは、動物を見つけることです。今までにツキノワグマ、カモシカ、シカ、サル、イノシシ、アナグマ、ウサギ、ヘビ、フクロウ、キジを見てきました。もちろん、冬の時期には、冬眠に入っている動物もいるので、見つけることは困難です。しかし私が山に出かけると、大抵何匹か動物の痕跡を見つけることが出来ます。
　正月休みの間、私は金沢と白山の林道を何度か散歩しました。私が目撃した動物の写真は撮れませんでしたが、泥や雪に動物の足跡があり、じっくり観察することが出来ました。これらの足跡はどの動物だと思いますか？

December 25, 2021 Merry Christmas!

みなさんこんにちは！白山麓高専事務室の間加田侑里です。12月といえばクリスマスです！そこで白山麓キャンパスで行われたクリスマスに関する出来事をいくつかご紹介します。

Hello everyone! This is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office. December is the month of Christmas. I would like to write about some of the events related to Christmas here at the Hakusanroku Campus.

12月15日（水）に「ランゲージ&カルチャー」のクラブ員達と教員により、クリスマスツリーが設置されました。クリスマスソングを流し、クリスマスツリーにクラブ員達が製作した手作りの飾りやライトを巻き、クリスマスの思い出を語りながら楽しい雰囲気でクリスマスツリーを組み立てていました。また、余分に作った手作りの飾りは学生と教職員にクリスマスプレゼントとして配られました。

On Wednesday, December 15th, the Language and Culture club members and teachers set up a Christmas tree. They played Christmas songs, wrapped the tree with lights, and hung Christmas decorations. As they did this, they talked about their Christmas memories. Some of the decorations were handmade by club members. Later, the extra handmade hung Christmas decorations were given to the students and staff members as Christmas gifts.

Chrisrmas Party

クリスマスには学生たちが帰省するため、少し早めの12月18日（土）にラーニングメンターのアン先生、アピラク先生、ジョムキット先生が企画したイベント「クリスマスパーティ」が行われました。この日を待ち望んでいた学生たちは多いはずです。可愛いと評判のカップケーキやホットチョコレートが準備され、学生や教員達は共にカラオケやゲームを楽しみました。冬休みが到来する前に楽しい思い出が出来たのではないでしょうか。

Since students go home for Christmas, the Christmas Party was held on Sunday, December 18th. It was organized by the Learning Mentors, Ann sensei, Apirak sensei, and Jomkit sensei. Many of the students had been looking forward to the party. The students and teachers enjoyed karaoke and games together as well as eating some lovely cupcakes and drinking hot chocolate. I am sure they made some fun memories before winter break.

Christmas Cake Party

12月20日（月）の授業終了後、リビングコモンズにてスイーツ作りが得意なエドワード先生が手作りクリスマスケーキやジンジャーブレッドクッキーをみなさんに振舞いました！見た目が可愛い雪だるまの形をしたクリスマスケーキの味はスパイスやミントが効いていて、日本のケーキとは違った甘くて深みのある味がしました。ジンジャーブレッドクッキーにはアイシングし、アレンジしながら楽しみました。マシュマロが沢山入ったホットチョコレートには３種類のスパイスが準備されており、カスタマイズをしながら色んな味を楽しむことが出来ました。どれも全部美味しかったです！エドワード先生からクリスマスケーキパーティと国際高専の生活についてのメッセージ動画です。どうぞご覧ください。

After class on Monday, December 20th, Edward sensei, who is good at baking, served a homemade Christmas cake and gingerbread cookies to everyone in the Living Commons! The Christmas cake, shaped like a cute snowman, tasted different from Japanese cakes because of the spices and mint. The gingerbread cookies were decorated with white icing and arranged in a fun way. The hot chocolate had lots of marshmallows. There were also three kinds of spices that could be added to each cup of hot chocolate, in order to customize it and enjoy different flavors. Special Christmas Menu at the Golden Eagle Cafeteria

白山麓キャンパスのカフェテリア「Golden Eagle Cafeteria」では、普段から世界中の健康的な料理を味わうことができます。12月23日（木）にクリスマススペシャルメニューとしてローストチキンとクリスマスチョコレートブラウニーが提供されました。ハロウィンやクリスマスなど、イベントごとに提供されるスペシャルメニューは寮生活での楽しみの1つですね。

In the Golden Eagle Cafeteria at the Hakusanroku campus, you can usually eat healthy food from around the world. On Thursday, December 23rd, the cafeteria served a special Christmas menu of Roasted Chicken and Christmas Chocolate Brownies. For occasions like Halloween and Christmas, there are special menus. It is one of the things that students enjoy about their dormitory life.

Holiday Gift Exchange 2021

今年はラーニングメンターのアン先生が企画した「Holiday Gift Exchange 2021」という学生同士、教職員同士がシークレットにクリスマスプレゼント交換をするイベントが行われました。欧米では「シークレットサンタ」と呼ばれている、クリスマスに行われる伝統的なゲームだそうです。
以下はシークレットサンタのルールです。
1) まずはアンケートに記入します。氏名、好きな食べ物、好きな色、好きなスポーツなどを回答します。
2) 記入したアンケートをギフトボックスに入れます。
3) アンケートは参加者にランダムで配られます。もちろん自分のアンケートが自分の手元に届かないように配慮する必要があります。
4) 自分の手元に届いた相手の情報を元に予算内（学生：1000円～2000円、教職員：2000円～3000円）でプレゼントを購入します。
5) ラッピングされたプレゼントをクリスマスツリーの下に置きます。

プレゼントを誰かに贈り、誰から何を贈られるかはプレゼントを開封するまで予測できないという楽しみがあります。想像するだけでドキドキしますね。

This year, Learning Mentor Anne sensei, organized an event called Holiday Gift Exchange 2021, where students, teachers, and staff members participated in a Secret Santa gift exchange. In Europe and the United States, it is a common Christmas tradition.
Here are the rules for Secret Santa.
1) Complete a questionnaire about yourself including your name, your favorite food, favorite color, favorite sport, etc.,
2) Put the completed questionnaire forms in the gift box.
3) Distribute the questionnaire forms randomly, but make sure no one receives their own questionnaire.
4) Buy a present for your Secret Santa partner, but stay within the budget. (Students: 1,000 yen to 2,000 yen, Teachers and staff members: 2,000 yen to 3,000 yen)
5) Wrap the present and put it under the Christmas tree.

The fun part is that you can't predict who will give you a gift and what they will give you until you open the gift. It's exciting just to imagine who bought you a present and what it will be!

さて、ランダムに配られたアンケートが手元に届いた学生たちの反応は面白いものでした。相手に何を贈れば喜んでもらえるか真剣に悩んでいる学生や、すぐにアイデアを思いつき、ネットで検索している学生など、さまざまな反応が見られました。アンケートから相手が喜びそうな贈り物を連想して、何か贈り物を探すことも楽しみの1つだなと改めて思いました。

It was interesting to see the reaction of the students when they received the randomly distributed questionnaire forms. Some students were seriously wondering what they should get for their Secret Santa partner, while others immediately came up with an idea and searched the Internet for it. I was reminded once again that one of the fun parts of the event is using the information from the questionnaire form to find a gift that the recipient would enjoy.

クリスマスプレゼントは12月23日（木）にアン・サンタクロースさんから学生と教職員の元に贈られました。学生たちがプレゼントを開封している瞬間が大いに盛り上がり、喜んでいる姿にクリスマスらしい暖かい雰囲気が出ていました。楽しそうにクリスマスを祝っている学生たちの姿に絆を感じました。2年生は白山麓キャンパスでの寮生活が残り数か月となりました。寮生活での一瞬一瞬を大切に過ごし、思い出を沢山作ってほしいと思います。

Christmas gifts were presented to the students, teachers, and staff members by Anne Santa Claus on Thursday, December 23rd. There was a warm Christmas atmosphere as the students opened their gifts and were delighted to find out what they had received from their Secret Santa partner. and I felt a bond among the students as they celebrated. The second-year students have only a few months left to live in the dormitory at the Hakusanroku Campus. I hope they will cherish every moment of their dormitory life and make many good memories.

December 8, 2021 Board Game Day!

A community means not only learning together, but also having fun and enjoying life together! Last month, we had a Board Game Day at the Hakusanroku Campus. At the request of a couple students, we got together some teachers, students, and a big pile of games. Some of our teachers really love board games, so we have quite a lot!

　「コミュニティ」とは、一緒に学ぶだけではなく、人生を共に楽しむという意味も含まれます。先月、白山麓キャンパスでは「Board Game Day」が開催されました。今回は学生のリクエストにより、このイベントが開催され、数名の教員と学生、そして大量のゲームが集まりました。教員の中には、ボードゲーム好きの方がいらっしゃるので、かなりたくさんのゲームが揃いました。

First up was the classic The Settlers of CATAN. A staple game in every board game lover’s inventory, this game is known for challenging relationships and breaking friendships. However, on this day, we had only fun with Catan as students and some teachers played it for the very first time. Saran, Ema, Jomkit-sensei, and Apirak-sensei fought to win territory, build roads, and construct cities for a whole two hours before Jomkit-sensei finally emerged victorious!

During this time, Ryuto, Shii, and Ian-sensei also played a few games. They started by competing to see who could cook the fastest meal in かなざわレシピ (Kanazawa Recipe). While playing this game, they also had the chance to learn about some of Kanazawa’s specialty dishes. Next, they challenged The Grizzled, a cooperative game about surviving during WWI. It’s a difficult game to win and the team fought hard, but were unsuccessful in the end.

　まずは定番の「The Settlers of CATAN」から始めました。これはボードゲーム愛好家の中では定番のゲームで、人間関係を築いたり、友情を破壊したりすることで知られています。しかしこの日は、学生と数名の教員達が初めてこのゲームに挑戦したので、今回は楽しみながらゲームを進めました。紗蘭さん、恵万さん、ジョムキット先生、アピラク先生は領土の獲得、道路と都市を建設するために、2時間にわたり戦いましたが、最終的にはジョムキット先生が勝利を収めました！

　その間に龍斗さん、史依さん、イアン先生もいくつかのゲームをしました。まずは「かなざわレシピ（Kanazawa Recipe)」というカードゲームで、誰が一番早く料理を作れるかを競いました。このゲームを通して、金沢の名物料理も学ぶことが出来ました。次に「The Grizzled」という第一次世界大戦中のサバイバルをテーマにした協力型カードゲームに挑戦しました。このゲームはミッションを達成することがかなり難しく、チームで協力しながら懸命に戦略を練りましたが、最終的には失敗に終わりました。

After these games, we regrouped together for a game of NINE TILES, a fast, competitive game produced by Oink Games (a brilliant company particularly liked by Anne-sensei and Kushima-sensei).  Finally, we ended the day with Garbage Day, brought by Kushima-sensei. In this game, we tried to clean our rooms while piling the garbage up and not letting it fall! This game was more than juststrategy, but it was a test of fine motor skills too! In the game, Apirak-sensei threw away an engagement ring and had to take out the overflowing trash!

　それらのゲームを終えた後に、全員でOink Games社が制作した「NINE TILES」というスピード感のある対戦ゲームをしました。Oink Game社は私と久島先生が特に気に入っている素晴らしいゲーム会社です。最後に久島先生が持参した「Garbage Day」というボードゲームで締めくくりました。このゲームでは、ゴミが落ちないように積み上げながら部屋の掃除をします。単なる戦略だけではなく、器用さも試されます！アピラク先生は婚約指輪を捨ててしまい、溢れたゴミを出す羽目になってしまいました！

Although the turn-out was small for our first game day, we had a lot of fun and played games for many hours! Hopefully, we can do this again and have even more people join in to try more games!

　初めての「Board Game Day」にしては参加者が少なかったのですが、とても楽しくて何時間もゲームをしてしまいました！次回はさらに多くの人に参加してもらい、より多くのゲームに挑戦してもらいたいと思っています！

December 1, 2021 Colorful and Fun

Four years have passed since the start of our college`s new program. I commute to the Hakusanroku Campus all the way up from my home in Kanazawa, every working day. However, I still enjoy the mountainous scenery from the car. It is so beautiful and interesting. The change of the weather and the season makes the view from the car looks like a new piece of art every time. Autumn is my favorite season in Japan. It does not rain as often as it does during other seasons. So, I can enjoy watching the shiny sunlight kissing the colorful leaves. The other day, I saw a double rainbow from the car. It is always fun to observe a rainbow before it disappears. Colors make everything look glorious. Nature gives you the moment of reflection and meditation. If you are a person of science, you would enjoy the moment while asking yourself many questions.

I would like my students to enjoy their life and explore the beauty of the universe around them on a wider and deeper scale. Studying science and specifically, chemistry can help them do that and get the aha moment and be mesmerized by what they discover. One experiment that Year 1 students performed last week gave them the answer to questions that might have come to their minds, such as, “Why candle`s light is yellow?”, “What are fireworks made of?”, or even, “How do we know what the millions-of-light-years-far-away stars are made of?”. Flame test of different metallic ions experiment helped them know the logic behind spectrum emission and explained that each element has its unique spectrum emission. The light emitted by an element is like a fingerprint that shows its presence in different parts of the universe.

People of science do not only enjoy their observations, but they also question, analyze, and explain them. Year 1 students performed the flame test experiment twice. The first time, they did it while following the given instructions to observe how metallic ions such as sodium, potassium, copper, or lithium emit yellow, violet, blue-green, and red flame lights, respectively. They seemed to have enjoyed the flame colors. I could hear them saying words of amusement such as “oh, Wow !!” or “look at that!”. The second time, it was a lab practical, meaning that they performed the procedure independently to define five different metals present in the unknown provided salts. They did their best in following the safety procedure, making observations, and providing explanations. There was some time left after they finished. So, I showed them a firework stick with seven different colors. It was interesting to see them call out the name of metals every time a new color light appeared. That was colorful and fun!

　国際高専が新しいプログラムを開始して4年が経ちました。私は金沢の自宅から白山麓キャンパスまで毎日通勤しています。通勤中に車から見える山の景色はとても美しく、興味深いものです。天候や季節の変化によって、車から見える景色は毎回新しい芸術作品のように見えます。秋は日本で一番好きな季節です。他の季節のように頻繁に雨が降ることはないので、色とりどりの葉に光が当たる様子を楽しむことができます。先日、車から2重の虹が見えました。虹の観察はいつ見ても楽しいものです。色はすべてのものを輝かせてくれます。自然は自分を振り返る瞬間を与えてくれます。もしあなたが科学者であれば、自問自答をしながら、その瞬間を楽しむでしょう。

　私は学生たちに人生を楽しみ、宇宙の美しさをより広く深く探求してもらいたいと思っています。科学、特に化学を学ぶことは、その手助けとなり、発見したものに魅了され、ひらめく瞬間を得ることができるでしょう。1年生が先週行ったある実験では「ろうそくの光はなぜ黄色いのか」「花火は何でできているのか」、さらには「何百万光年も離れた星は何でできているのか、どうやって知ることができるのか」など、学生たちが頭の中に浮かんだ疑問を解決する授業を行いました。さまざまな金属イオンの炎色試験では、輝線スペクトルの論理を知ってもらい、各元素には固有の輝線スペクトルがあることを解説しました。元素が発する光は、宇宙のさまざまな場所でその存在を示す指紋のようなものです。

　科学者は観察を楽しむだけでなく、疑問を持ち、分析し、解説もします。 1年生は炎色試験を2回行いました。1回目は指示に従いながら、ナトリウム、カリウム、銅やリチウムなどの金属イオンが、それぞれ黄、紫、青緑、赤の炎を出す様子を観察しました。炎の色を見て「おぉ！凄い！」や「見て見て！！」など楽しそうな声が聞こえました。2回目は実習を行いました。未知の塩に含まれる5種類の金属を定義するために、学生たちは独自の手順で実践しました。学生たちは、安全手順を守り、観察し、そして説明することに最善を尽くしました。実習が終わってから少し時間があったので、7色に変化する花火の棒を見せました。色が変化するたびに、学生たちは金属の名前を呼んでいて面白かったです。カラフルで楽しかったです。

November 22, 2021 How to Get a Motorcycle License in Japan

Hello everyone! This is Apirak, a Learning mentor. I've been living at the HAKUSANROKU (Foothills of Mt. Hakusan) for a year and a half. The transportation to get down to the town is just only a bus that takes 40-ish minutes. However, that's not the point why I started thinking about getting a motorcycle license in Japan. Therefore, I enjoy modifying and riding. I like the feeling when the wind hits my helmet when the sun leads to a place that I have never been before, so that has become one of my goals to ride a motorcycle all around Japan.

 みなさんこんにちは！ラーニングメンターのアピラクです。白山麓に住み始めて1年半経ちました。白山麓から市街への交通手段は、約40分掛かるバスのみです。しかし私が日本でバイク免許の取得を考えたポイントは交通手段だけではありません。バイクの改造や乗ることが楽しいからです。太陽の光に導かれて行ったことのない場所へ行き、ヘルメットに風が当たる感覚が好きで、今ではバイクで日本一周をすることが私の目標の一つとなりました。

Before I did that, I started researching how to get a motorcycle license and delivered my Thai motorcycle license to JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) for translation. The step to getting a license is pretty simple and easy. 
First, fill out the document and send it to JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) for translation. (Download here: https://english.jaf.or.jp/driving-in-japan/drive-in-japan/foreign-nationals-license) Second, go to the Driver's license center (運転免許' 'センター) for submit your document and make an appointment for the next test.  Third, pass a pre-test. The officer will be testing that you know how to lift and walk with a motorcycle perfectly. Fourth, pass a real test. The officer will ask you to do a paper test (You need to pass 7 of 10 questions) and the hard one is a ride test. If you pass both of the tests, now the road is waiting for you.

それらを行う前に、まずはバイクの免許の取得方法を調べ、タイのバイクの免許証をJAF（日本自動車連盟）に届けて翻訳をして頂きました。
免許取得までのステップはとてもシンプルで簡単です。
1. 書類を記入しJAF（日本自動車連盟）に翻訳を依頼します。

2. 運転免許センターへ行き、書類提出と次回の試験予約をします。
3. 予備テストに合格します。このテストではバイクを持ち上げることが出来るか、バイクを支えながら歩けるかどうかが重視されます。
4. 本試験に合格します。筆記試験（10問中7問正解する必要があります。）と技能試験を受けなければなりません。技能試験はかなりの難関です。どちらとも合格すれば、いよいよ旅の始まりです。

Alright, everything seems perfect, now we will take a look at the path. The picture below shows you an example of the trail and mission that you have to do.
さて、これで全てが完璧に見えますが、次は技能試験の内容を見てみましょう。下の写真は技能試験のコースとミッションです。

By following the letter, A to H is the mission that you have to ride through:
A) L-curve (less than 5 seconds)
B) S-curve (less than 5 seconds)
C) Small Bridge: The dimension of the bridge is 30 centimeters wide and 15 meters long. The mission we don’t have to speed up for it. They want to test your stability on a motorcycle so you have to ride on it for more than 10 seconds.
D) Crosswalk: Slow your bike and check carefully to be sure that it doesn't have pedestrians.
E) Stand riding: Stand on the motorcycle and ride through the bump’s road for more than 7 seconds.
F) Slalom: Ride through a path restricted by traffic cones at least 7 seconds.
G) Flashing red and yellow signal light: Remember that the flashing red, you must stop and check but flashing yellow, you have to slow your speed and proceed with caution.
H) Multi-Lane change: Always keep in mind that every time you want to change a lane, you have to turn a signal on and check if the car is behind you.

For me, I don’t have to take a full track test because I have experience on motorcycles for over 5 years. So, the track is pretty short BUT they have the things under the iceberg that failed me for the third time.

A～Hまで乗り越えなければならないミッションです。
A) L字カーブ（5秒以内）
B) S字カーブ（5秒以内）
C) 一本橋: 橋の寸法は幅30センチ、長さ15メートルです。スピードではなくバイクの安定性が求められるテストで、10秒以上掛けて渡らなければなりません。
D) 横断歩道: バイクの速度を落とし、歩行者がいないかをよく確認します。
E) 立ち乗り: これは複数の突起が設置された路面を立ち乗りの状態で7秒以上掛けて走行します。
F) スラローム: 等間隔に設置された障害物を左右にバイクを傾けながら交互に交わし、少なくとも7秒間掛けて走行します。
G) 赤と黄色に点滅する信号: 赤信号は必ず停止し、黄色点滅信号は注意しながら交差点を走行します。
H) 車線変更: 車線変更をする際には、方向指示器を点滅させ、後ろに車がいるかどうかを常に確認しなければなりません。

私の場合、5年以上バイクに乗っていた経験があったため、全ての技能試験コースを受ける必要はありませんでした。そのためコースはかなり短かったのですが、迂闊にも3回も不合格になってしまいました。

Here are the tips to pass the test:

1. Make sure that you wearing full-gear of motorcycle protection like a Helmet (Take the new one with you don’t use the old helmet for the test), Groves, Jacket with armor pads, Pants, and Motorcycle shoes (sneaker is ok for the test)
2. Before you do a test, you will have a one-ish hour during lunchtime to look at the track. Use this time to remember and walk down on the path to get used to it.
3. Before the test, try to predict or simulate in your head as you ride on the track.
4. Don’t panic if you forget the path. Just stop and ask the staff.
5. Do not forget to check your bike before getting on it. Point your finger in the front, side, and back of the bike
6. Check behind the bike before kicking the stand and swing your leg on.
7. Adjust the mirror before starting the engine.
8. Check LEFT - RIGHT mirror and BEHIND every time before you move the bike.
9. At the stop line（止まれ）always stop right before the line.
10. Every time you take a turn, you have to ride follow the arrow sign on the road (Don’t ride cut or over)
11. Single lane is two road lanes split for motorcycles. 
12. If you ride on Multi-lane roads, don’t ride in the middle.
13. After turning left or right, keep riding on the left side.
14. Don’t forget to turn your signal every time you change the lanes.
15. Ask YouTube-sensei if you are not sure what to do for each mission and I hardly recommend watching all of the videos of people doing the ride tests.

1. バイクに乗車するためにはフル装備の準備が必要です。例えば、ヘルメット（古いものではなく、新しいものを準備してください。）、グローブ、アーマーパット入りのジャケット、オートバイク 用の靴（試験ではスニーカーでも可）。
2. 技能試験を受ける前に1時間ほどの昼食タイムがあるので、その間にコース内を歩いて進路を覚え、慣れておきましょう。
3. 試験を受ける前に、コース走行のことを頭の中で予測しシミュレーションをしておきましょう。
4. コースを忘れても慌てず、立ち止まって、スタッフに聞きましょう。
5. バイク乗車前に、前後左右を指で指しながら確認しましょう。
6. バイクの背後を確認してからサイドスタンドを蹴り、バイクにまたがりましょう。
7. エンジンを掛ける前に、ミラーの調節をしましょう。
8. バイクを発進させる前に左右のミラーと背後を毎回確認しましょう。
9. 停止線（止まれ）では線の手前で毎回停止しましょう。
10. 曲がるたびに、道路上の矢印表示に従って走行しましょう。（ハンドルの切りすぎやラインの超えすぎに注意です。）
11. 片側一車線は、左側に寄って走行しましょう。
12. 片側二車線では左側の車線を走行すると共に、その車線内でも左側寄りを走行しましょう。
13. 右左折後は左側を走行しましょう。
14. 車線変更をする際に、必ず合図を出しましょう。
15. 各ミッションで何をすべきか分からない場合は、YouTube先生に聞いて下さい。また、技能試験をしている人のビデオを全て見ることをお勧めします。

みなさんこんにちは！白山麓高専事務室の間加田侑里です。段々と肌寒くなり、白山麓キャンパス周辺の紅葉が美しく見られ始めるようになってきました。

 さて、１１月１日にハロウィンイベントが行われました。ハロウィンでは学生や教員達が仮装をしたまま授業を行っており、いつもと違った楽しい雰囲気でした。そして放課後にはハロウィンコスチュームパレードが開催され、学生や教員達は緊張しながらも堂々としたウォーキングを見せ、とても華やかなパレードとなりました。パレード後にはコンテストが行われ、最も怖い、最も面白い、最もかっこいい/可愛いコスチュームに景品が贈られました。

Hello everyone! This is Yuri Makada from the Hakusanroku office. It's starting to get chilly and the autumn leaves around the Hakusanroku campus are starting to look beautiful.

On November 1st, many students and teachers dressed up in costumes for the Halloween event, which created a special and fun atmosphere. After school, the Halloween Costume Parade was held. The students and teachers were nervous but walked majestically, making it a very brilliant parade. After the parade, we had a contest for the scariest, the funniest, the coolest/cutest costumes, and the winners received a prize.

また「ランゲージ＆カルチャー」のクラブ員達はジャック・オー・ランタン作りを行いました。約５kgあるカボチャを１時間以上かけてくり抜いてデザインされ、素晴らしい作品に仕上げました。ろうそくを入れて完成したぼんやりと光るジャック・オー・ランタンに思わず見とれました。

The Language and Culture club members also made jack-o'-lanterns. They spent more than an hour hollowing out a pumpkin weighing about 5 kg. After this, students carved designs and faces into their pumpkins. Then a candle was put inside each jack-o'-lantern, creating a beautiful and spooky glow from within.

August 5, 2021 Summer Break! Party Time!

Hello everyone, it’s Jonathan the camera man! The first semester is coming to a close and summer break is almost upon us. Students finished their final exams yesterday and are getting ready to go back home for the holidays. But before they do, the learning mentors organized one last event to end the semester with a bang. The event was titled "End-of-semester PARTY TIME" and was an assembly of events for students to enjoy together. You can see all the events Anne sensei and the other teachers prepared for the students in the picture on the right.

We started with sports in the gym. Students and teachers gathered to play basketball and badminton as we waited for everyone to show up for the water balloon fight. The learning mentors prepared 200 water balloons and cooled them in the dormitory refrigerators. (Although, they later concluded that we need more balloons next time.) Water balloon fights are common where I come from in America, but for most of the students here, it was their first time. They started out with getting into pairs and tossing the balloon back and forth; taking a step back with each successful toss. This got students ready and we moved to the main event, "every man for himself" mode! Students ran and threw balloons at each other, laughing and screaming the whole time. You can see my best effort to record the chaos in the video below.

After the water balloon fight, some students went back the gym to play basketball, where I heard their had an epic game against the teachers. After dinner, we gathered in the Living Commons for the second half of the event. It started with dessert, which consisted to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apple pie, vanilla ice cream, fruits, and soda. The sandwiches were delicious and we added ice cream to the apple pie and sodas to make floats. Once every one was full we gathered for a huge game of hide and seek. There we more than twenty people and students rushed to find places to hide. We turned off all the lights and it was exciting hiding and seeking in the dark school building. Students loved it so much that they insisted on a second game, which was equally thrilling. Finally, everyone found their spot in either karaoke at the big staircase or playing video games in the project booth as we winded down for the day. The event was a humongous success and I don't recall taking this many laughing and smiling faces in a while.

COVID-19 has made it difficult for the school to hold events such as sports days or school festivals. Luckily, the Hakusanroku Campus is secluded from society and we can conduct events like this (with safety measures to minimize risks.) I hope students return home with there latest memory being laughing and having fun with their friends, stay safe, and have a wonderful summer vacation.

みなさんこんにちは、ジョナサンです！まもなく前学期が終わり、夏休みが到来します。学生たちも期末試験が終わって家族の元へ帰る準備をしています。しかし、帰ってしまう前に、今学期最後にして最大級のイベントが開催されました。それがアン先生率いるラーニングメンターたちが企画したイベント「学期末パーティータイム」です。これ水風船合戦や大かくれんぼ大会など、学生が楽しめる複数の企画の集合体です。１枚目の写真で、企画されたスケジュールを見ることができます。

まずは体育館でバスケットボールとバドミントンから始まり、最初のメインイベントである水風船合戦のために全員が集まるまで遊びました。ラーニングメンターたちはこのために水風船を２００個準備し、暑さに備えて冷蔵庫で冷やしていました。私の故郷のアメリカでは水風船を投げ合う遊びはメジャーなのですが、白山麓キャンパスの学生のほとんどが初体験でした。そのため、まずは慣れるためにペアになって交互に水風船を投げて、キャッチに成功するたびに１歩下がるという練習をしました。水風船合戦の風船は日本のお祭りによくあるヨーヨー釣りの風船ではなく、野菜のナスのような形をした水で満たされた風船で、当てると破裂して水浸しにすることができます。要は雪合戦と同じです。練習を終えたらさっそく本番が始まりました。学生たちは笑ったり、悲鳴を上げたりしながら、走り回って風船を投げ合いました。可能な限り撮影を試みたので、上の動画でその様子をご覧ください。

水風船合戦のあとは夕食まで休憩をとりました。何人かの学生は体育館に戻って、先生チームと50点まで競い合う名勝負を繰り広げました。夕食後はリビングコモンズに集まって、アン先生たちが用意したデザートを食べました。ピーナッツバターとジェリーのサンドイッチ、アップルパイ、バニラアイス、フルーツ、ドリンクがありました。アメリカの定番おやつのピーナッツバターとジェリーのサンドイッチ（通称PB&J）は絶品で、バニラアイスをアップルパイに乗せて食べたり、ソフトドリンクでフロートを作ったりしました。満足いくまで食べたあとは校舎を使った大かくれんぼ大会を開催しました。20人以上が参加して、鬼が４人、残りが校舎の1階と2階に隠れました。すべての電気を消して、いつも勉強している空間でかくれんぼをするのはとてもスリルがあって楽しめました。学生たちも楽しかったようで、第2ラウンドを要求するほどでした。遊び疲れたあとは大階段のカラオケ組とプロジェクトブースのビデオゲーム組に分かれて、消灯時間まで遊びました。イベントは大成功で、撮影係としては、これほどたくさんの笑顔を撮るのは久しく感じました。

新型コロナウィルスの影響で、本来ならば開催される体育祭や学園祭などのイベントが中止になる中で、対策をすればこのようなイベントを開催できる全寮制の白山麓キャンパスは恵まれた環境だと思います。帰省する学生が今回のイベントで見せた笑顔で、楽しかった思い出を胸に地元へ戻り、安全に、そして楽しい夏休みを過ごすことを願っています。

ジョナサンです！7月の白山麓キャンパスのイベントを３つ紹介します。

7月4日（日）、アメリカの独立記念日を祝してBBQ大会が白山麓キャンパスの中庭で開催されました。企画はランゲージ＆カルチャークラブで、同キャンパスの全教職員と学生が招待されました。開始時間の14時半に中庭に行ってみるとBBQのグリル以外にも、外国人のラーニングメンターや先生が自作したローンゲーム（芝生の上で行うゲーム）が２つ用意されていました。ひとつはコーンホールという、2人ペアがチームとなって、穴が開いている専用の板に向かって順番に布袋を投げていくものでした。布袋が板に乗ると得点が入り、さらに穴に入れると高得点となります。相手チームより先に21点獲得すると勝ちです。集中力と投擲技術を要するゲームで、時より穴に入ったプレイヤーの歓声が聞こえてきました。もうひとつはアメリカンクラッカーで、紐でつながった2つのゴムボールを3本の横棒目掛けて投げ、巻き付いた棒に応じた得点が貰えます。これは主に男子学生が夢中になって遊び、イベント終盤には上達した学生が連続得点を決めていました。

BBQのほうは料理が得意なエドワード先生が担当し、チーズバーガーとホットドッグをたくさん焼いてくれました。バンズに挟んだバーガーは絶品で、おかわりする学生が続出しました。また、お腹を満たした男子学生が中庭のバスケットコートで試合を始め、エネルギーを発散しました。雨の予報だったが、不思議とイベントの間は一滴も降らず、快適な天候の中、それぞれがゲームや会話を楽しみました。

7月7日（水）、ラーニングメンター主催のイベント「ストレス発散用の手遊びオモチャ作り教室」が開催されました。これは学期末が近づくにつれ課題が増えている学生に対して、ストレスを発散するためのオモチャを楽しみながら作ろうという目的のイベントで、ラーニングメンターのアン先生、アピラク先生、ジョムキット先生によって計画されました。ひとつは色とりどりの紐を使ったハンドスピナーで、参加した学生と教員がアン先生の指導の下、パチンコ玉を中心にカラフルな紐で模様を織りながら作りました。もうひとつはアピラク先生が担当したスライム作りで、用意した染料を混ぜることでお好みの色のスライムが作れました。さらにこれを風船に入れることで大きな耳たぶのような触り心地のスライムを手を汚さずに持ち歩くことができます。また、オモチャではありませんが、キャンディーケーンをジップロックに入れてトンカチで叩き潰すコーナーもあり、学生は普段のストレスを楽しそうに発散していました。

7月20日（火）、スイーツ争奪バドミントン大会が白山麓キャンパスの体育館で開催されました。これはスイーツ作りが得意なエドワード先生の企画で、学生に身体を動かして美味しいスイーツを食べてもらうために計画されました。用意されたのはメープルベーコンのドーナッツ、マカロン、カップケーキなどで、学生はバドミントンで先生と試合するとポイントを獲得し、そのポイントをスイーツと交換できるシステムでした。白山麓キャンパスの学生は注意をしないと運動不足になりがちですが、この日は汗を流して、笑顔でスイーツを頬張りました。

以上、７月のイベントでした。今年の7月は連休も多く、学生はリフレッシュしながら学期末試験や課題に臨みます。

It’s Jonathan, the camera man! I’d like to write about three events that happened this month.

On July 4 (Sun), there was a barbeque party at the Hakusanroku Campus on the lawn next to the basketball court. This event was organized by the Language & Culture Club and all Hakusanroku students and staff were invited. The party started at 2:30 pm and the first thing I noticed was the two lawn games that some of the teaching staff had setup. One was cornhole: a game where two people toss a bag of corn onto a slanted board with a hole. Two teams take turns tossing the bags and you get points when the bag lands on the board or in the whole. The first team to get 21 points wins! I tried it for the first time and found that it asks for both concentration and precision. Getting the bag in the whole seemed impossible at first and I heard players let out shouts of joy from time to time as they got better. The other game was clackers; two plastic balls connected with string. There were three horizontal polls and you get points depending on which one you manage to throw and rap the clacker around. A group of second year students took special interest in this and some almost mastered it by the time the event was over.

I can’t forget about the barbeque itself! Ed sensei (or “Mr. B” as most students call him) took charge of all the cooking and made everyone cheeseburgers and hotdogs to our heart’s content. They were delicious and students devoured them as quick as Ed sensei could make them. Some of the boys burned off that energy right away with a game of basketball. The weather forecast said it was going to rain but the skies held up and we ended up with a not too hot, perfect cloudy day.

On July 7 (Wed), the learning mentors held their “Making Toys to Relieve Stress Workshop” in the Maker Studio. This event was organized as a fun way to help neutralize students’ stress as the semester comes to an end and so comes assignment deadlines. The learning mentors, Anne sensei, Apriak sensei, and Jomkit sensei each took charge of three different booths. Anne sensei taught students how to make hand spinners by weaving different color string around a pinball. Apirak sensei’s booth made various color slimes, which they filled balloons with to create soft squishy toys. Jomkit sensei’s booth didn’t make anything, but instead had bags of candy canes that students could crush with a hammer. All three booths saw multiple visitors and students enjoyed moving their hands and blowing off stress.

It’s fairly easy to fall out of shape due to a lack of exercise at the Hakusanroku Campus. That's why Mr. B organized a special badminton tournament on July 20 (Tue) as a fun way for students to move their bodies and eat some delicious food at the same time. He prepared a ton of sweets such as maple bacon donuts, macarons, and cupcakes. During the tournament, students could challenge any of the teachers to accumulate points, which they could trade in for sweets. It was a casual and fun event with many students laughing and eating sweets.

July was a fun month with many holidays and events. Hopefully students released some stress and prepared themselves for the final exams this week.

July 21, 2021 Competitions

The Olympic games will start in few days. July 23rd is the starting day of one of the most internationally exciting sports events. It is especially exciting this time because it will be held in Japan. Olympics were canceled during world war II. In 1940, both summer and winter Olympics were scheduled to be held in Japan. Tokyo Olympics takes special importance. After the tsunami and the nuclear disaster of Fukushima, Japan has seen an economic recession for a while. That would make the games symbolic of a reestablishment of Japan.

I am thrilled that it was not canceled, even though it comes a year later than planned without spectators. Besides it being a good chance for family gatherings, it is always inspiring for me to watch athletes go through all types of feelings. Athletes participate in Olympics with different motivations and goals. After four, or five years, in this case, some athletes are satisfied and proud of the fact that they were qualified to join in and represent their countries. Others are eager to win medals and raise their country names and flags. Moreover, some athletes are worried about their World or Olympic records. They are competing against their previous selves and other athletes. Why do they have to do all the hard work and go through that kind of stress? I always wanted to understand it and see it from their perspectives.

I thought of asking someone with a similar experience. So, I talked to two of our year two students who recently participated in design and science competitions. I asked them about their reasons and motivations for participating and if they thought it is worth going through all the stress and mixed feelings.

Shii Yamazaki, a 2020 Grand Prize winner of Autodesk Fusion 360 Student Design, participated again this year in the same national competition held by Auto Desk Learning Partener. Shii told me that although she was happy to get the semi grand prize again this year, winning was not her motivation in participating in the competition. Talking about her reasons to join, Shii told me that she enjoyed designing in general and wanted to share her designs with others and see theirs.

Afaf Alaa is the first student in our college to participate in an international science competition. She participated in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Competition. The competition has three stages of judgments, and the final results will be announced in November this year. Afaf told me that she had to spend two continuous months making a 3- min film that teaches a science concept or topic. “Although it was difficult and exhausting, I learned a lot and gained new experiences,” Afaf said. For reasons to participate in this competition, she said that she wanted to represent her school, her community as a female engineer-to-be in the STEM society. It helped her gain a lot of confidence.

Now I understand why people choose to participate in competitions. They want to learn more. They gain resilience through competing. It helps them understand their abilities and how much they can add to their experiences and improve over time. It seems satisfying and worth all the stress and hardship. オリンピック開催まで残り数日となりました。7月23日から全世界がもっとも注目するスポーツイベントのひとつが幕を上げるのです。今回は日本での開催となるため、いつも以上に熱が高まっています。第二次世界大戦中、オリンピックが中止されたことがありました。1940年、夏と冬、両オリンピック大会が日本で開催されるはずでした。東京オリンピックは特別な大会なのです。福島での津波と原子力発電所の時期以来、日本は景気が後退しています。オリンピックが日本再建のシンボルとなるわけです。

1年遅れで無観客となりましたが、中止にならなくて本当に良かったと思います。家族が集まる機会になるだけではなく、各種目の選手たちの様々な思いを感じることでインスピレーションを得られます。皆色んな思いや目標を持ってこのオリンピックに臨んでいます。4年前、あるいはこの場合は5年前、選手たちの中には自らの国を代表できることに胸を膨らませ、誇りにする選手もいます。また、メダルを勝ち取りたい、自国の国旗を天高く掲げたい選手もいます。さらに、世界記録、大会記録を狙っている選手もいます。過去の自分や歴代の選手と競っている選手もいます。どうしてそれほどの努力とストレスをかけなくてはならないのか？それが知りたくて、いつも彼らの立場になって想像します。

似たような経験をした人に聞いてみようと思い、最近デザインとサイエンス系のコンテストに出場した２年生２名に話を聞いてみました。出場した動機と、ストレスや様々な苦労をかける価値があるのかどうか質問をしました。

Autodesk社のFusion 360 学生デザインコンテスト2020で特賞を受賞した山崎史依さんは今年、同じ大会に再度出場しました。史依さんによれば優秀賞を受賞できて嬉しかったが、勝利への執着はないそうです。参加する理由として、デザインすること自体が好きで、自分の作品を見てもらったり、他の人の作品を見ることが楽しいと話していました。

アファフ・アラーさんは国際高専から初めて国外のサイエンス・コンテストに出場した学生です。彼女が参加したのはBreakthrough Junior Challenge Competitionという大会です。３段階の審査があり、最終結果は今年の１１月に発表されます。アファフさんの話では、科学がテーマの３分の動画を制作するために丸２週間かかったと言います。「難しくて大変でしたが、新しいことをたくさん学ぶ良い経験になりました」と語っていました。このコンテストに出場した動機を聞くと、母校と地元を代表する女性エンジニアとしてSTEM業界デビューしたかったと答えてくれました。この経験で自信をつけてくれると良いですね。

これで人がコンテストに出場する理由がわかりました。もっと多くを知りたいのです。競い合うことで持久力も付きます。自分の実力を知り、経験値をためて成長できる範囲を測ることができます。その満足感のためならば、ストレスと苦労をかける価値があるように思えます。
