Hello folks! It’s Domyson Abuan, one of the new learning mentors from the Philippines. I moved to Hakusanroku campus on Sunday, August 20, 2023. It was scorching hot that day but guess what, after moving all my stuff in, it sprinkled a bit and there appeared a rainbow stretching over the campus!

  Landing a job at ICT Kanazawa felt like destiny. I was in university studying civil engineering when I got the chance to visit Iwate on March 11, 2013, two years after the big earthquake. There, I met a boy named Kouki who was then about 8 years old. He and his community inspired my quest to do more research on disaster preparedness. That same year, in November 2013, one of the most destructive typhoons in history hit my country and sadly it caused 6300 dreams to be shattered. At that time, heartbroken by the aftermath, I felt the urge to dedicate more time to educating people about preparedness.
 Instead of working for a construction firm, I decided to teach science and disaster preparedness to primary school students in the Philippines. It was great witnessing little scientists work on simple tools and seeing them explore nature in the school gardens to look for small plants and animals with their magnifying glasses as we tackled disaster mitigation in science class. After two years, I got an opportunity to teach English in Japan and got to work with Japanese high school students. I also reunited with my host family in Iwate and guess what, Kouki is now 18, almost taller than me and is eagerly studying programming! I got a job at ICT Hakusanroku campus, a school that helps revitalize the community it belongs to and the next time Kouki and I meet, we will for sure talk more about technology and its applications.
 Now I am back, surrounded by my co-teachers and students who are innovators, all set to work as a learning mentor. I am really excited to be of support to students, teachers, and the community in Hakusanroku campus. In the Philippines, we have a concept called bayanihan wherein people come together to work on one goal —for instance in my hometown, if a wooden house is at risk of flooding, people would uproot it altogether, carry it by hand, and transfer it to a safer place. Bayanihan came from the root word bayani, meaning ‘hero’. I am looking forward to witnessing how our school does bayanihan with the locals of Hakusanroku and to seeing heroes in action.

 Oh and speaking of heroes, I feel powerful everytime I win in janken. I am not very lucky but I enjoy playing it a lot so if you see me, let’s do a janken battle! Until then, I leave you with a message from my hero Uzumaki Naruto: “Believe (you can do) it! Dattebayo!”

　みなさん、こんにちは！私はフィリピン出身で新しいラーニングメンターの1人、ドミソン・アブワンです。2023年8月20日(日)に白山麓キャンパスへ引っ越してきました。この日は猛暑日でしたが、私の荷物をすべて運び込んだ後、小雨が降り、キャンパスに虹がかかりました！

　国際高専で働くことは運命的だと感じました。私は大学で土木工学を学んでいて、東日本大震災から2年後の2013年3月11日に岩手に訪れる機会がありました。そこで8歳のコウキくんという少年に出会いました。彼と彼のコミュニティのおかげで、私は災害への備えについてもっと研究したいと思うようになりました。その年の2013年11月、歴史上最も破壊的な台風がフィリピンを襲い、6,300人もの夢が打ち砕かれました。その時、私はその影響で心を痛め、私は災害への備えについて人々に教育するためにもっと時間を割きたいという衝動に駆られました。
　私は建設会社に就職はせず、フィリピンの小学生に理科と災害対策について教えることに決めました。理科の授業で減災について取り組む中、小さな科学者たちが簡単な道具を使って作業をしたり、学校の庭の自然を探検して虫眼鏡で小さな植物や動物を探したりする姿を見るのは素晴らしいことでした。2年後、私は日本で英語を教える機会を得て、日本の高校生に向けて仕事をすることになりました。私は岩手のホストファミリーとも再開し、コウキくんは18歳になり、私よりも背が高く、熱心にプログラミングを勉強していました！私は地域活性化に取り組んでいる白山麓キャンパスに仕事が決まったので、今後コウキくんと会うときは、テクノロジーとその応用についてもっと話すことになるでしょう。
　今、私はイノベーターである教員たちと学生たちに囲まれて、ラーニングメンターとして働いています。私は白山麓キャンパスで学生や先生方、そして地域の方々のサポートができることをとても嬉しく思っています。フィリピンには「バヤニハン」と呼ばれる考え方があり、人々が一つの目標に向かって協力し合います。例えば、私の故郷では、木造の家が洪水の危険にさらされると、人々は木造の家を根こそぎ撤去し、手で家を運び、安全な場所に移します。バヤニハンは、「英雄」を意味するバヤニという語源からきています。私たちの学校が白山麓の地元の人たちと共にどのようにバニヤンを行うのか、そしてヒーローの活躍を見ることを楽しみにしています。

　ヒーローといえば、私はジャンケンで勝つたびに毎回パワーを感じます。私はあまり運が良くないけど、ジャンケンは凄く楽しいので僕を見かけたらジャンケンをしましょう！それまでは、僕のヒーローであるうずまきナルトのメッセージを残します。
「あなたなら出来る！だってばよ！」

 Hello! My name is Sadé Moore and I am one of the new Learning Mentors at ICT. I started working at the ICT on Sunday, August 20, 2023. I am from America and my hometown is called Portsmouth, Virginia.  I graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) with a Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Health and Sciences and Biology.  
 I am really excited to be working at the Hakusanroku Campus as a new Learning Mentor. Actually, living in Ishikawa is not something I’m unfamiliar with, as I have been living in Ishikawa for the past 5 years in Tsubata-machi Ishikawa prefecture. My prior job was for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET Program) as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), teaching English at Tsubata Junior High School and Tsubata Elementary School.
 I have already traveled extensively around the Hokuriku area in the past five years that I have lived here and have enjoyed many aspects of life here such as: going to ryokan in Kurobe, going camping in Suzu, and visiting Tojinbo in Fukui. I have loved living and working in Ishikawa so much that I decided I wanted to stay even longer after my JET contract ended, so that is why I am very honored to have been chosen as a new Learning Mentor at ICT.
 In my old schools I always maintained that the favorite part of my job were the students and the relationship. I managed to forge with them over the 5 years that I worked in Tsubata. Therefore, I aspire to build an equally as strong bond with the students here. I am looking forward to making many amazing memories here at ICT!  どうぞ宜しくお願いします。

　こんにちは！私は新しいラーニングメンターの1人、シャーデー・モーアです。2023年8月20日(日)から国際高専で働き始めました。私はアメリカ出身で、故郷はバージニア州のポーツマスというところです。私はバージニア工科大学を卒業し、動物健康科学と生物学の学士号を取得しました。
　私は白山麓キャンパスでラーニングメンターとして働けることをとても嬉しく思っています。実は、5年前から石川県の津幡町に住んでいた私にとって、石川県の生活は馴染みないものではありません。前職はJETプログラムのALT（外国語指導助手）として津幡町立津幡中学校と津幡町立津幡小学校で英語を教えていました。
　私は石川県に住んできた過去5年間で黒部の旅館に行ったり、珠洲でキャンプしたり、福井の東尋坊に行ったりと、北陸を幅広く旅してきました。私は石川県での生活や仕事がとても気に入っていたので、JETの契約が終了した後も、もっと長く石川県に滞在したいと思うようになりました。そのため、国際高専のラーニングメンターとして採用されたことをとても光栄に思っています。
　以前勤めていた学校で、私はこの仕事で一番好きな部分は生徒たちと関係性を築けることだと常に言ってきました。津幡で働いた5年間で、私は生徒たちと絆を深めることができました。なので、ここでも学生たちと同じように強い絆を築きたいと思っています。国際高専で素晴らしい思い出をたくさん作れることを楽しみにしています！どうぞ宜しくお願いします。

 Kumusta ("Hello" in Filipino)! I’m Krishia Atillo, one of the new learning mentors from the Philippines. I came to Japan in June 2023. This is my first hakusanroku journal entry, and I’m delighted to share my first three months' experience living and working at the ICT Hakusanroku campus.

 I always dreamed about going to Japan and experiencing what it was like—the culture, food, people, etc. Now that I can live and work in Japan, it is such a blessing for me. When I first arrived at Kanazawa station, I immediately went to the famous tourist spot, which was the Tsuzumimon gate, and asked some tourists if they could take a picture of me in front of the Tsuzumimon gate. Since I lived and worked in Thailand for five years and the weather was just the same as in the Philippines, the weather here was a little bit of a shock for me because it's so cold in Japan, but I got used to it as time passed.

　クムスタ（フィリピン語で「こんにちは」）！私は新しいラーニングメンターの1人、フィリピン出身のクリシア・アティロです。2023年6月に日本に来ました。これは私の最初のジャーナルで、白山麓キャンパスで3か月過ごした生活と仕事の経験を共有できることを嬉しく思います。

　日本に行って、文化、食べ物、人々など、日本はどんな国なのか、どんな体験をすることができるのか私はいつも夢見ていました。私は今、日本で生活し働くことができて本当に幸せです。初めて金沢駅に着いたとき、私はすぐに有名な観光スポットである「鼓門」に行き、鼓門の前で写真を撮ってくれないかと観光客に頼みました。私はタイに5年間住み、フィリピンと同じような気候で仕事をしていたので、日本の寒さに少しショックを受けましたが、時間が経つにつれて慣れてきました。

 

I liked how the hakusanroku campus is situate, it's far from the busy city streets of Kanazawa, which I liked since I’m the type of person who prefers quiet areas. The people were all kind and helped me a lot with everything. I enjoyed observing and listening to classes because the professors were all active, knowledgeable, and good at their expert at their own subject matter. The students were also actively participating in their daily activities in class, for example, laboratory experiments in Chemistry.

　 白山麓キャンパスの立地は、金沢の繁華街から離れていて、私は静かな場所を好むタイプなので気に入りました。人々はみんな親切で、色々なことを助けてくれました。教員たちもみなさん活発で、知識も豊富で、それぞれの専門分野の専門性に優れているため、授業を見学したり聞いたりするのがとても楽しかったです。また、学生たちも化学の実験など日々の授業に積極的に取り組んでいました。

 I went to see the one-hour fireworks display called Hokkoku Fireworks 2023 at Saigawa river side in Kanazawa on Saturday, July 29^th. 2023. It was my first time watching a firework display that long and I was mesmerized at how beautiful it was. There were lots of locals and foreigners who went to see the fireworks display. I enjoyed it a lot and took some photos and videos of it!
 I look forward to experiencing many things in Japan in the future.

　2023年7月29日（土）に金沢の犀川沿いで開催された「北國花火2023」という1時間の花火大会に行ってきました。あんなに長い花火を見たのは初めてで、その美しさに魅了されました。花火大会を見に行った地元の人や外国人がたくさんいました。私はとても楽しかったので写真とビデオを撮りました！
　これから日本でいろんな経験できることを楽しみにしています。

 Hello everyone, my name is Apirak Sang-ngenchai, a Learning Mentor from Thailand. I haven't been able to visit my home country as often as I would like due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, I went to the biggest Thai festival in Japan, held for the first time in three years at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo. The Thai Festival was so much fun, colorful, and lively. Not only Thai people joined the festival but also other travelers came too.

　みなさんこんにちは、タイ出身でラーニングメンターのアピラク・サンゲンチャイです。新型コロナウイルス感染症のパンデミックの影響で、思うように母国を訪れることができませんでした。先日、東京の代々木公園で3年ぶりに開催された日本最大のタイフェスティバルに行ってきました。タイフェスティバルはとても楽しくて、カラフルで、にぎやかでした。タイ人だけでなく、旅行者もフェスティバルに参加していました。

 I heard the amazing Thai music playing as soon as I arrived. The performances on stage were mostly by Thai singers and Thai idols. The music made me feel like I was in Thailand.
 Let's talk about the food, the smell of Thai food filled the air, and my mouth started watering. I tried Khao Soi and Northern Thai Sausage. Each bite was bursting with delicious flavors. I couldn't get enough! 
 But it wasn't just about the music and food. There were booths with Thai ingredients and fruits from Thailand, such as Mango, Coconut, Longan, and Durian. However, Durian has a strong smell which some people like, and some hate, but for me, Durian is the king of fruit. LOL.

　会場に到着してすぐに、素晴らしいタイの音楽が聞こえました。ステージでのパフォーマンスは、タイの歌手やタイのアイドルが中心でした。まるでタイにいるような気分にさせてくれました。
　食べ物の話をしましょう。会場はタイ料理の匂いが充満し、私の口の中は渇いてきました。私はカオソーイと北タイソーセージを食べてみました。一口食べるごとに、美味しさが溢れ出てきました。もっと食べたかったです！
　しかし、音楽や食べ物だけではありませんでした。タイの食材やマンゴー、ココナッツ、リュウガン、ドリアンといったタイ産のフルーツが並ぶブースもありました。ただ、ドリアンは匂いが強烈で、好きな人もいれば嫌いな人もいますが、私にとってドリアンは果物の王様です。笑

 The best part of the festival was the happy and friendly atmosphere. People from different backgrounds laughed, ate, drank, and enjoyed the festival together.
 It was such a wonderful feeling. I left the festival with a big smile and feeling heavy from overeating food. And this reminds me that Thailand is known as the "Land of Smiles," I can't wait for the next festival to celebrate and look forward to more adventures! #ThaiFestivalTokyo2023

　このフェスティバルの一番の見どころは、ハッピーでフレンドリーな雰囲気でした。さまざまなバックグラウンドを持つ人々が笑い、食べ、飲み、一緒にフェスティバルを楽しみました。
　私はとても素晴らしい気分でした。私は満面の笑みを浮かべ、お腹もいっぱいになったところでフェスティバルを後にしました。タイ王国が「微笑みの国」として知られていることを再認識し、次のフェスティバルが待ち遠しく、さらなる冒険を楽しみにしています！　#タイフェスティバル東京2023

 Hello everyone! This is Jomkit Jujaroen, a Learning Mentor. It’s not often that I write these journals, but I wanted to talk a little bit about the Welcome Party, we the Learning Mentors, held for 1st year students at the end of April 2023. Of course, it wasn’t only restricted to the 1st year students; many 2nd year students were also happy to join. 

 We like to hold the Welcome Party at the beginning of every academic year to help remind the students to take a break and enjoy themselves every now and then. This year the party was held on the optional Friday Learning Session. The students enjoyed some activities, like Karaoke at the grand staircase, and playing the popular party game Super Smash Bro’s Ultimate in the project booth. The Learning Mentors also brought many snacks; some were requested, some common crowd pleasers, and even some special snacks from other countries. For instance, Birthday Cake-flavored Oreos and Toffee Crunch-flavored Oreos. 

It was impressive that the 1st and 2nd year students seemed to be having a good time.

　みなさんこんにちは！ラーニングメンターのジョムキット・ジュジャロエンです。私はこのようなジャーナルを書くことはあまりないのですが、2023年4月末に私たちラーニングメンターが1年生のために開催した歓迎会について少しお話しします。もちろん、1年生だけではなく、たくさんの2年生も歓迎会に参加してくれました。

　毎年、年度初めに開催している歓迎会は、学生たちに楽しい時間を過ごしてもらい、息抜きをしてもらうために開催しています。今年は参加が自由となる金曜日のラーニングセッションの時間に歓迎会を開催しました。学生たちはカラオケを大階段でしたり、人気のパーティゲーム「大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ SPECIAL」をプロジェクトブースでするなど様々な活動を楽しみました。また、ラーニングメンターたちは、学生たちからリクエストのあったお菓子の他に学生たちが好きそうなお菓子やバースデーケーキ味のオレオやトフィークランチ味のオレオといった海外の特別なお菓子をたくさん準備しました。

　楽しそうに過ごしている１、2年生が印象的でした。
